Detailed Description

In the following description, the following X-Y-Z coordinate systems are exemplarily chosen for explanation only: the Z-axis is parallel to the optical axis of the lens module of the folded camera module described below (referred to as the "first" optical axis), while the X-axis and the Y-axis are perpendicular to the Z-axis and to each other, and form a plane parallel to the plane of the folded camera image sensor, see, for example, fig. 3. The X-axis is also parallel to a "second" optical axis in FIG. 2B, such as axis 272.

Fig. 3A schematically illustrates an isometric view of a first embodiment of a folded camera module, generally designated 300, according to examples disclosed herein. Fig. 3B schematically shows a first exploded isometric view of the folded camera module 300, and fig. 3C schematically shows a second exploded isometric view of the folded camera module 300. As with the camera module 100 described above, the camera module 100 may illustratively be included (incorporated) in a folded lens dual-aperture camera (such as camera 250 or other cameras described in commonly owned U.S. patent application No. 20160044247). The camera module 300 includes an image sensor 302 located at a first end 303 of the camera module 300 and having an imaging surface in the X-Y plane; a lens module 304 having a first optical axis 306 parallel to the Z-axis; and an OPFE in the form of a prism 308 having a reflecting plane 310 that is tilted at a normal of 45 degrees to the image sensor surface so that light arriving from the X direction is tilted by the prism to the Z direction. OPFE is hereinafter referred to generically as a "prism," with the understanding that it may also be a mirror or any other reflective element. The lens module 304 is rigidly coupled to the prism and the two elements form a single "lens-prism unit" 324 (so that the lens and prism move together). In contrast to camera module 100, camera module 300 includes a combined lens and prism actuation assembly (also referred to as a lens-prism actuation assembly) for moving lens-prism unit 324 in three directions X-Y-Z. The lens-prism actuation assembly includes a suspension structure 316 that includes four flexible suspension members 316a-d that suspend the lens barrel unit between vertical segments 312a or 312b rigidly coupled to a base 318 and a moving support structure 330. The members 316a-d may take the form of four wires and may be referred to as "wire springs" or "poles". The suspension structure 316 allows for X-Y motion as is known in the art. The support structure 330 is illustratively shown as having a U-shape with two side members 320a and 320b and a rear frame 322. The back panel is located at a second end 321 of the folded camera module, the second end 321 being opposite to the first end along the first optical axis. The suspension members 316a-d extend between the vertical segments 312a and 312b and the side members 320a and 320 b.

Note that as used herein, the terms "first end" and "second end" are not necessarily limited to physical ends of the folded camera module, but instead relate to a position along the optical path: the first end is in the optical path before the prism and/or the folded lens module, as shown herein in fig. 3A-3C, and the second end is in the optical path after the folded lens module and/or the additional prism (the latter, for example, as in the folded camera module of co-owned U.S. patent application No. 20160044247, shown in fig. 3).

In the camera module 300, the lens-prism actuation assembly includes four actuators (e.g., voice coil motors or "VCMs"), each including a respective magnet and coil. Thus, the first actuator includes magnet 326a and coil 328a, the second actuator includes magnet 326b and coil 328b, the third actuator includes magnet 326c and coil 328c, and the fourth actuator includes magnet 326d and coil 328 d. The first, second and third actuators are operable to impart in-plane movement to the prismatic lens unit in the X-Y plane substantially relative to the base 318, e.g. for OIS. These actuators are also operable to avoid rotational (tilting) movements of the lens-prism unit around the Z-axis. The fourth actuator is a "side" actuator operable to impart motion to the lens prism unit along the Z-axis for focusing (i.e., for auto-focusing). As shown in the exploded view of fig. 3B, magnets 326a, 326B and 326c are located on a back panel 332 parallel to back frame 322, while magnet 326d is located on a side panel 340 rigidly attached to the lens. Coils 328a, 328b and 328c are located on a back plate 332 facing respective magnets 326a, 326b and 326c on back plate 332, while coil 328d is located on a side plate 334 rigidly attached to side member 320 b. The first, second and third actuators are also referred to as "rear actuators", while the fourth actuator is also referred to as "side actuator". A position sensor (e.g., a hall bar position sensor) 336 is provided for each magnet coil pair. For example, hall bar sensor 336a is positioned adjacent to magnet 326a, hall bar sensor 336b is positioned adjacent to magnet 326b, hall bar sensor 336c is positioned adjacent to magnet 326c, and hall bar sensor 336d is positioned adjacent to magnet 326 d. Movement along the Z-axis for focus by side actuator actuation is enabled by two sets of balls 350a and 350b, which sets of balls 350a and 350b are arranged to engage and be positioned between two grooves 352a and 352b in side panel 334 and two grooves 354a and 354b in side panel 340, as is known in the art.

Advantageously, all four actuators are positioned so as not to increase the height of the folded camera module. The folded camera module height is determined only by the diameter of the lens module and its range of movement in the X direction (see also fig. 4). The positioning of the side actuator component (magnet 326d) on side panel 340 and the positioning of coil 328d on side panel 334 also facilitate providing Z-direction movement without affecting the camera module height. It is further advantageous that the actuators are positioned such that they do not obstruct or interfere with the optical path between the object being imaged and the folded camera module image sensor. Specifically, the prism is located between the actuator for OIS and the image sensor. Still further advantageously, the cost of the camera modules disclosed herein manufactured using proven technology may be relatively low.

In operation, a lorentz force may be applied to the magnets 326a-b along the X-axis direction and a lorentz force may be applied to the magnet 326c along the Y-axis direction. Having these three forces on the three magnets allows three mechanical degrees of freedom of movement at the center of mass of the lens and prism: linear X and Y motion, and tilting motion about the Z axis. The X-Y movement of the lens prism unit may be measured by respective hall bars coupled to magnetic fields generated by respective magnets. Similarly, a lorentz force may be applied along the Z direction by magnet 326d to allow linear motion along the Z axis. More details on the operation of the various actuators can be found in commonly owned patent application No. PCT/IB 2016/052179.

Fig. 4A schematically illustrates an isometric view of a second embodiment of a folded camera module, generally designated 400, according to examples disclosed herein. Fig. 4B schematically shows two exploded isometric views of the folded camera module 400, while fig. 4C schematically shows a slight change in the overall camera height and a slight change in the overall height dimension H due to the lens module X-axis movement in the camera module 400. In general, embodiment 400 includes the same components as embodiment 300, except that the lens module is decoupled from the prism. The lens can be moved in the X-Y plane while the prism is fixed (not moved). Since the lens is axisymmetric and the prism is fixed, the tilt around Z does not affect the quality of the image obtained at the image sensor. To this end, the camera module 400 may include only three of the four actuators, i.e., only actuators 324b-d, since no actuator 324a is required for movement in the X-Y plane. Thus, position sensing requires only three Hall bar sensors. Of which only 326b and 326c are shown. The change due to lens module movement (i.e., the lens module movement range) is equal to the distance between the two extreme lens module positions (the lower position labeled 402 and the upper position labeled 404). The total height H of the folded camera module is determined by the lens module diameter D plus the change due to the lens module movement.

Fig. 5A schematically illustrates an isometric view of a third embodiment of a folded camera module, generally designated 500, according to examples disclosed herein. Fig. 5B schematically illustrates an exploded isometric view of the folded camera module 500. In contrast to camera modules 300 and 400, in camera module 500, the focusing movement along the Z-axis is enabled by a suspension structure comprising four flexible suspension members 502a-d that suspend the lens barrel from side plate 334. This eliminates the need for balls and grooves. The members 502a-c may be leaf springs. The members 502a-d are mechanically coupled to the lens module 304 by a faceplate 504 that is rigidly attached to the lens module. Actuation of the side actuator (of which only magnet 326d is shown) causes the members 502a-d to flex in the Z direction, thereby allowing Z movement of the lens module for AF.
