Technical Field

The present invention relates to an environmental monitoring system intended to assist personnel in cleaning operations.

Background

Every house and other building requires cleaning, and it has heretofore been common for such cleaning to be temporarily performed when a person can see a surface in a building as dirty or dusty and thus needs cleaning. Some people choose to perform cleaning according to a schedule. In any of the above cases, most people must concentrate on the cleaning work, and it can be understood that the cleaning work is easily overlooked. Also, most people may not be aware that a surface in a building needs to be cleaned because the surface does not appear dirty.

In view of the above, the present invention has now devised an environmental monitoring system that is aimed at assisting personnel in cleaning operations.

Disclosure of Invention

According to the present invention, there is provided an environmental monitoring system comprising a sensor for detecting settled dust or other airborne particulate matter in a building; and means for transmitting a wireless signal to a remote device indicating a need for vacuum cleaning of a surface in the building based on the level of particulate matter detected by the sensor.

In use, the sensor causes the wireless device to detect the level of dust or other particulate matter on a surface of the building, such that the surface requires vacuum cleaning. Thus, most people do not need to concentrate on the cleaning work to avoid the risk of neglecting the cleaning work.

The remote device may be a robotic cleaner that is subsequently activated to clean a floor surface in the building based on the level of particulate matter detected by the sensor.

The remote device may optionally be a smart phone or a tablet configured to provide a user with an indication of the level of particulate matter detected by the sensor indicating a surface in the building needs to be vacuum cleaned, for example using a manually operated vacuum cleaner.

The system may include a plurality of sensors disposed in a plurality of different areas of the building, the apparatus being configured to transmit a wireless signal to the remote device indicating that an area of the building has a surface that needs to be cleaned.

The sensors may be connected to a local data network in the building, for example wirelessly using wireless hot spot (Wi-Fi) or other communication protocol.

The local network may be connected to a remote data network, such as the Internet or World Wide Web (WWW).

The remote device may be wirelessly connected to a network.

The system comprises a decision device for deciding whether a surface in the building needs to be cleaned based on data output from the sensor, the decision device may be located in the sensor, or in the remote equipment, or in a processing device connected to a network to which the sensor is connected.

The decision means can also decide whether the surface in the building needs to be cleaned based on data output from one or more of the following data sources:

a) a movement or occupancy detector in the building: it can be appreciated that having a plurality of rooms with a high occupancy level will require more frequent cleaning;

b) a temperature and/or humidity detector: it is understood that temperature and humidity are factors that determine the amount of mold and bacteria growth, and that temperature and humidity may also be factors that promote the proliferation of dust mites and secondary bacterial growth on dead skin cells, insect fecal matter, and animal dander;

c) an environmental or air quality detector: areas of poor air quality may be understood to require more frequent cleaning. The detector can detect particulate pollution of PM 2.5 and/or PM 10 level in the air;

d) a Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) detector;

e) a gas detector, for example, for detecting the level of carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and/or ozone;

f) a noise detector: it is again understood that the level of noise in a room may be indicative of the occupancy level;

g) a weather sensor;

h) a clock and/or a calendar;

i) a pollen sensor;

j) a database contains calendar information for a plurality of users of the building. The database may also provide an indication of the occupancy level of the building.

A source of the data may be located in or adjacent to the building. A data source, optionally or additionally connected to a network to which the remote device is connected: air quality or weather data may be determined, for example, over a network from data provided by a third party.

The various levels in the system provide an indication that a surface in the building needs to be cleaned, which indication can be selected or adjusted by a user.

According to the present invention there is also provided a method of using the above described environmental monitoring system, the method providing an indication of whether a surface in the building requires vacuum cleaning.

There is also provided in accordance with the present invention a method of determining whether a surface in a building requires vacuum cleaning, the method comprising analysing the output of a sensor to detect dust and other airborne particulate matter in the building; and transmitting a wireless signal to a remote device to indicate that the surface requires vacuum cleaning based on the level of particulate matter detected by the sensor.

The method may include activating a robotic vacuum cleaner to clean a floor surface in the building based on the level of particulate matter detected by the sensor.

The method optionally includes providing an indication to a user that the level of particulate matter detected by a sensor indicates a need for vacuum cleaning a surface in the building.

The method may include analyzing one or more of the plurality of sensors and/or plurality of data sources described above to determine whether the surface requires cleaning.

The method may include analyzing the output of a plurality of sensors for detecting dust or other airborne particulate matter in various areas of the building; and transmitting a wireless signal to the remote device indicating that a surface of an area of the building needs cleaning.

There is also provided in accordance with the invention a sensor for use in the above-mentioned environmental monitoring system, the sensor comprising means for detecting the level of dust and other airborne particulate matter in the building and for transmitting a data signal to a remote device in dependence on the detected level of particulate matter.

The sensor may include a fan configured to draw in ambient air.

Drawings

Various embodiments of the present invention are described herein by way of example only and with reference to the following drawings, in which:

FIG. 1 is a schematic view of an environmental monitoring system according to one embodiment of the present invention;

FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view through a local sensor of the environmental system of FIG. 1; and

FIG. 3 is a schematic diagram of an alternative embodiment of the environmental monitoring system according to the present invention.

Detailed Description

Referring to FIG. 1 of the drawings, FIG. 1 shows an environmental monitoring system including a plurality of environmental sensing units 10 located in respective rooms of a home. A plurality of the environment sensing units 10 are connected wirelessly and/or through a cable to a router 11 to form a local network. The router 11 is connected to a remote network such as the internet, which is connected to a server 13 and a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network 14.

Referring to FIG. 2 of the drawings, each of the environmental sensing units 10 includes an upwardly facing conical inlet 19, the upwardly facing conical inlet 19 tapering outwardly and upwardly from an opening 20 at the bottom of the upwardly facing conical inlet 19. A centrifugal fan 21 inside the environment sensing unit 10 draws air into the unit 10 through the opening 20 at the bottom of the inlet 19. The air flow passes through a dust sensor 22 via the opening into a room inside the unit 10, in which an environmental sensor 23 and a temperature and humidity sensor 24 are arranged. The sensors 22, 23, 24 are connected to a control circuit 26 inside the unit. An external interface 25 is provided with a status indicator of a Light Emitting Diode (LED) and one or more switches for turning the unit on or off or for resetting the unit. The control unit 26 also includes a network interface for communicating with the router 11.

Each of the environment sensing units 10 includes a unique media access control address (MAC address) and is pre-configured to output data to a unique internet protocol address (IP address) where the server is located. In use, a plurality of the environmental monitoring units 10 communicate with the server 13 via the internet 12 to provide the server 13 with data obtained from a plurality of the sensors 22, 23, 24. The server 13 analyzes the received data to determine whether the room in which the environmental sensing unit 10 is located needs to be vacuum cleaned. The server 13 can also obtain data from a third party server 17 relating to the pollen indices known to be located at the dwelling. It is understood that the user provides the above information during a registration process of the system.

In the case where the server 13 determines that vacuum cleaning is required, the server 13 sends a signal to a user's smart phone 15 or tablet computer 16 via the internet. In the case of the smart phone, the data may be transmitted through the GPRS network 14. In either case, the data may be transmitted to the server 11, and the server 11 then transmits to the smart phone 15 and the tablet computer 16 via Wi-Fi.

The smart phone 15 and the tablet computer 16 can have an application software (i.e. an application program) dedicated to the environment monitoring system of the present invention. The application provides data obtained from the plurality of environment sensing elements 10 and the user's home to the user and also provides an indication that a room in the home needs vacuum cleaning.

The user may then perform a cleaning and send a signal back to the server once the cleaning is complete so that the server knows that a vacuum cleaning has been performed. In the case where the user has a robotic vacuum cleaner 18, the user may use the application software on the smart phone 15 or the tablet computer 16 to activate the robotic vacuum cleaner 18. Alternatively, the server 13 can directly start the robot cleaner when it detects that the room in which the robot cleaner is located needs vacuum cleaning. It will again be appreciated that the server 13 may provide the position of the robotic cleaner during the registration process.

Referring to fig. 3 of the drawings, fig. 3 shows an environmental monitoring system having more advanced features than the environmental monitoring system of fig. 1. In fig. 1 and 3, a plurality of the same portions are given a plurality of the same reference numerals. One or more of the plurality of environmental sensing units 10 of the system of FIG. 3 may include a detector 30 for detecting volatile organic compounds in the air. The unit 10 may also include a gas detector 32, for example, for detecting carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and/or ozone. An environment sensing unit 10 may also include a motion detector 33 for detecting occupancy of the room. The data collected by the sensors 30, 32, 33 is transmitted to the remote server 13 so that the server is further able to use the data from the sources to determine if a room in the home needs to be vacuum cleaned. The server 13 may also obtain data on air quality index, season, current weather and weather forecast from a plurality of third party servers 31.

During the registration process, the user can configure the system, for example, depending on whether the system is located in a residential, an office, or a hospital environment, the environmental cleanliness considerations are different. The user can also notify the server that a user of the system of the server has an allergy or other medical condition requiring special cleanliness.

The application software can also obtain data from a user's calendar to determine occupancy levels and configure vacuum cleaning tasks around the user's footprint.

Accordingly, the present invention provides an environmental monitoring system for assisting a plurality of people in performing cleaning work, the system comprising a plurality of sensors 10 for detecting the levels of dust and other environmental levels in the various rooms of a building and for transmitting the detected level data to a remote server 13 via the internet or other network, the remote server 13 analyzing the data and transmitting a signal to a wireless remote device (such as a smart phone 15, a tablet computer 16 or a robotic vacuum cleaner 18) indicating a surface in the building needs vacuum cleaning.

It will be appreciated that an environmental monitoring system according to the present invention has considerable flexibility and relies essentially on the basic level of dust or other airborne particulate matter to determine whether a room or other location in a home requires vacuum cleaning.
