Technical Field

The present disclosure relates generally to pillows, and in particular, can relate to pillows that provide one or more functions.

Background

Due to the rounded shape of the pillow filling, conventional pillows typically force the head upward or forward when used to support the neck and head. Forcing the head upward or forward may cause the user to feel discomfort in the head, neck or shoulder area.

Conventional pillows can be uncomfortable to use because the cushioning that the pillow may provide is insufficient. To increase cushioning, more compressible materials have been used, but these materials have a tendency to deform or distort. More compressible materials may also have a tendency to sag or collapse.

The shape of known pillows may also make the pillows uncomfortable to use in certain situations. For example, known pillows may have an ideal shape when the pillow is used in one position, but may have an undesirable shape when the pillow is used in a different position. Furthermore, some known pillows may not be suitable for use because the shape of the pillow may limit the potential uses of the pillow. For example, a conventional pillow may have a rectangular shape, and it may be useful to sleep or rest in one position (e.g., lying down), but may be difficult to use in another position (e.g., sitting or traveling). In addition, the size of many known pillows may limit their usefulness. For example, a large size of a conventional pillow may make the pillow convenient to use in some activities, but inconvenient to use in other activities. Similarly, known pillows of small size may be useful in some situations, but may be useless in other situations.

Disclosure of Invention

Accordingly, there is a need for a pillow that eliminates the above-mentioned disadvantages and problems.

One aspect is that the pillow can support the head of a user without forcing the head upward or forward. For example, a pillow may include a first section and a second section to support one or both sides of a user's head and/or neck. A connecting section, such as a third section, may connect the first section and the second section. In one exemplary embodiment, the first and second sections of the pillow can have substantially the same shape, size, configuration, and/or arrangement. For example, the first and second sections of the pillow can have a generally cylindrical shape, and the sections can be sized and shaped to support both sides of the head and/or neck of a user. In particular, the first and second sections may have a length and diameter that allows the pillow to support both sides of the head and/or neck. For example, the first and second sections may have a shape, size and configuration that allows the upper section of the pillow to contact the user's shoulders. This can allow the pillow to rest against the user's shoulders if desired.

Advantageously, the versatility of the pillow may be increased if the first and second sections of the pillow have substantially the same shape, size, configuration and/or arrangement. For example, the first and second sections of the pillow can have a generally symmetrical shape and allow the pillow to be easily used in various positions, such as facing up and/or down. Importantly, if the first and second sections of the pillow are substantially identical, the first and second sections can be used interchangeably. For example, the first section and/or the second section of the pillow can be used to support the left and/or right side of the head and/or neck of a user. The potential use of the pillow may be increased if the first and second sections of the pillow have a substantially symmetrical shape. Furthermore, if the first and second sections of the pillow have a substantially symmetrical shape, the ease of use of the pillow may be improved, as for example the pillow may be oriented in different positions and still perform the same or related functions.

For example, the dimensions of the first and second sections thereof may vary depending on the intended use of the pillow. For example, the first and second sections of the pillow may be larger in diameter for an adult-sized pillow than for a child-sized pillow. The first and second sections of the pillow may also be larger in diameter for males than for females. For example, the first and second sections of an adult-sized pillow may have an outer diameter of about 4 inches and a length of about 9 inches. The first and second sections of the child-sized pillow may have an outer diameter of about 3 inches and a length of about 6.5 inches. The connecting sections of an adult size pillow and a child size pillow may be about 2.5 inches. Upon review of this disclosure, those skilled in the art will recognize that different components of the pillow may have different shapes, sizes, configurations, and arrangements depending, for example, on the intended use of the pillow. For example, the outer diameter of an adult sized pillow may be about 4.5 inches, about 5 inches, about 5.5 inches, about 6 inches, about 6.5 inches, or more. The length of an adult-sized pillow can be less than about 9 inches, such as about 8 inches, about 7 inches, about 6 inches, about 5 inches, or less. The length of the adult-sized pillow can also be greater than about 9 inches, such as about 10 inches, about 11 inches, about 12 inches, about 13 inches, or more. The outer diameter of the child-sized pillow can be greater than or less than about 3 inches, such as about 1 inch, about 1.5 inches, about 2 inches, about 2.5 inches, about 3.5 inches, or about 4 inches. The length of the child-sized pillow can be less than about 6.5 inches, such as about 6 inches, about 5 inches, about 4 inches, about 3 inches, or less. The length of the child-sized pillow can be greater than about 6.5 inches, such as about 7 inches, about 8 inches, about 9 inches, or more. The connecting section of the adult-sized and child-sized pillows can be greater or less than about 2.5 inches, depending on the size of the first section and the second section, for example. For example, the connector segments may be smaller, such as about 2 inches, about 1.5 inches, about 1 inch or less, or the connector segments may be larger, such as about 3 inches, about 3.5 inches, about 4 inches or more. It is further understood after reviewing the present disclosure that the first section, the second section, and/or the connecting section may have other suitable shapes, sizes, configurations, and/or arrangements depending, for example, on the intended use of the pillow. It should also be understood after reviewing the present disclosure that the pillow or portions of the pillow may be symmetrical and/or asymmetrical, and the pillow or portions of the pillow may be proportional or non-proportional, depending on, for example, the intended use of the pillow.

The first and second sections of the pillow can be constructed of a relatively firm material so the first and second sections of the pillow can substantially retain their shape during use. For example, the first and second sections of the pillow may be constructed of a relatively firm material such as foam, memory foam, or the like. The first and second sections of the pillow may also be filled with various natural and synthetic materials, such as polyester, polyester granules, microbeads, polystyrene, foam, natural latex rubber, down, feathers, wool, buckwheat, linseed, and the like. The type and/or amount of material helps the first and second sections of the pillow to substantially retain their shape during use. The type and/or amount of material may also allow the first and second sections of the pillow to deform and/or deform malleable during use.

Another aspect is that the pillow can include a first section and a second section connected by a connecting section, and the connecting section can be relatively thin, relatively flat, and/or have a relatively small thickness. For example, while the first and second sections of the pillow may be sized and configured to support both sides and/or the neck of a user, the connecting section may provide only some support and/or cushioning. Advantageously, because the connecting section may have a relatively small thickness, such as generally equal to or less than about 1.0 inch, about 0.75 inch, about 0.5 inch, about 0.25 inch or less, the connecting section may not push the user's head upward or forward during use. In an exemplary embodiment, the connecting section may provide cushioning to the back of the user's head and/or neck, but the thickness of the connecting section may be such that the user's head and/or neck is not pushed upwards when the user is in a generally horizontal or prone position, such as when lying flat on the user's back. The connecting section may also not push the head or neck of the user forward when the user is in an upright or sitting position. Because the pillow may not push the user's head up or forward, the pillow may be significantly more comfortable to use. The connecting section may also have a relatively flatter or less curved outer surface than the first section and/or the second section. Thus, for example, the outer radius of curvature of the first and/or second sections may be much larger than the outer radius of curvature of the connecting section. In exemplary embodiments, the outer radius of curvature of the first and/or second sections may be at least two, three, four, five or more times the radius of curvature of the connecting section. In another exemplary embodiment, the thickness of the first and second sections may be at least two, three, four, five or more times the thickness of the connecting section.

In another aspect, the pillow can include a closure, and the closure can help maintain the pillow in a desired configuration or arrangement. For example, a connecting section may be connected to one end of the first and second sections of the pillow, and a closure may be connected to the other end of the first and second sections of the pillow. The closure may allow the pillow to be held in a generally U-shaped configuration or arrangement. For example, during use of the pillow, the first and second sections of the pillow may be disposed along both sides of the user's head and/or neck, and the connecting section may be disposed at least proximate to the back of the user's head and/or neck. In such a configuration, the pillow may have a generally U-shaped arrangement. The closure can help retain the pillow in a generally U-shaped arrangement, and the closure can attach the pillow to the user and/or help retain the pillow in a generally same position relative to the user. In an exemplary embodiment, the length of the closure member is adjustable. For example, the closure can include a first section attached to a first section of the pillow and a second section attached to a second section of the pillow. The first and second segments of the closure may be connected by ties, buttons, snaps, hook and loop fasteners, and the like. While the length of the closure is preferably adjustable, one skilled in the art will appreciate after reviewing this disclosure that the length of the closure need not be adjustable, and that the closure can have other suitable structures, configurations and arrangements, depending, for example, on the intended use of the pillow.

In yet another aspect, the pillow can support the user's head while the user is lying without pushing the user's head up or forward. For example, the first and second sides of the pillow can provide lateral support, which helps prevent the head from moving to one or both sides. That is, the first and second sides of the pillow help prevent the user's head from accidentally moving or rotating.

Yet another aspect is that the pillow can support the user's head without pushing the user's head forward when the user is standing or sitting. The first and second sides of the pillow may support one or both sides of the user's head and the thin connecting section may not push the user's head and/or neck forward. Thus, the pillow can provide lateral support to the user's head without pushing the user's head forward, which can increase the user's comfort. In addition, the closure helps to maintain the pillow in a desired position. The pillow may thus provide increased comfort to the user, for example when travelling, without discomfortably pushing the user's head forward, as lateral support may be provided to one or both sides of the user's head.

In further aspects, the pillow can have one or more different configurations or arrangements. For example, the pillow can be provided in a generally U-shaped configuration having a first section disposed along a first side of the user's head and/or neck, a second section disposed along a second side of the user's head and/or neck, and a connecting section connecting the first and second sections. In an exemplary embodiment, the connecting section may be flexible or bendable. Additionally or alternatively, one or more of the connections between the first and second segments and the connecting segment may be flexible or bendable. For example, the connection section and/or one or more connections between the first section and the second section may also provide a hinge-like feature. For example, this may allow the pillow to be provided in different configurations and arrangements (such as a generally L-shaped or angled configuration). In more detail, the connection between the first section and the connection section and/or the connection between the second section and the connection section may be flexible or bendable, which allows the first section and the second section of the pillow to be arranged at an angle, such as about 90 °, about 75 °, about 60 °, about 45 °, about 30 ° and/or about 15 °. Advantageously, the pillow may be arranged at various suitable angles, for example depending on the intended use of the pillow.

In another aspect, the pillow can include one or more flexible connectors, and the flexible connectors can allow the pillow to be provided in a variety of configurations and arrangements. The flexible connectors can allow the pillow to be easily manipulated into different configurations, and the connectors can allow the pillow to maintain a desired shape. The flexible linkage may also be resilient, flexible and/or biased, if desired. The flexible connectors may also allow the pillow to be adapted for different functions and purposes.

On the other hand, pillows can be provided in a number of different configurations, which can allow the pillow to be adapted for different purposes. For example, the pillow may be sized and configured to support both sides of a user's head when in an upright, angled, or prone position. In an exemplary configuration, the pillow can be disposed about the head and/or neck of a user, and the pillow can have a generally U-shaped configuration. The pillow may also be sized and configured to support one side of the head or neck of a user. In this exemplary configuration, the pillow can have an L-shaped or angled configuration. In the angled configuration, the first and second sections of the pillow can be disposed at an angle (such as an angle of about 30 °, about 60 °, about 90 °, about 120 °, about 150 °, or more). The pillow may also include one or more sections that are generally aligned along an axis. For example, the first section, the second section, and the connecting section of the pillow can be substantially aligned along the axis. In an exemplary configuration, the pillow can extend along a substantially straight line. In other exemplary configurations, the first section and the connecting section of the pillow can be aligned and/or the second section and the connecting section of the pillow can be aligned. Further, in another exemplary configuration, the first and second sections of the pillow can be disposed in a substantially parallel configuration. In a generally parallel configuration, the first and second sections of the pillow may be spaced apart by a distance and/or may touch or touch.

Yet another aspect is that the pillow can provide one or more functions. For example, the pillow can be sized and configured to support one or both sides of a user's head and/or neck. In another exemplary embodiment, the pillow can support the back of a user. For example, all or a portion of the pillow can be used to support the lower back of a user. Thus, for example, the first section or the second section of the pillow can be used to support the lower back of a user, or the first section and the second section of the pillow can be used to support the lower back of a user. For example, the pillow can be arranged in a straight, angled, U-shaped, or parallel configuration based on how the user desires to support his or her back using the pillow. In yet another exemplary embodiment, the pillow can support a user's legs. For example, a pillow can be placed under a user's knee or ankle based on how the user desires to support his or her legs, and the pillow can be disposed in a linear, angled, U-shaped, or parallel configuration. Thus, the pillow can support different sections of the body. It should also be understood that the pillow may support other sections of the body, such as the arms, core area, etc.

Yet another aspect is that the pillow can be designed for use on the go and at home. For example, the pillow may be used when traveling by airplane, train, automobile, etc. In particular, because the pillow can provide support for the head and/or neck when in an upright or sitting position, and does not cause the head or neck to be in an uncomfortable position, the pillow can promote sleep and/or rest when traveling. For example, the pillow can support the head and/or neck while maintaining the head and neck in general alignment with the user's spine and without pushing the user's head or neck forward into an uncomfortable position. The pillow can also provide lumbar support when traveling by placing all or a portion of the pillow between the user's lower back and the chair back. The pillow can also be used at home for watching TV, reading, etc.

Advantageously, the versatility of the pillow allows a user to change the shape of the pillow to best accommodate and support various body parts. In addition, the multi-functional pillow can eliminate the pressure or discomfort experienced by conventional pillows that force the user's head forward.

These and other aspects, features and advantages of the present invention will become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawings, accompanying drawings, detailed description of exemplary embodiments and appended claims.
