Technical Field

The present invention relates to a sprocket cover, and more particularly to a retrofittable sprocket cover comprising a coplanar sprocket surface, a cover surface and a fastener collar surface.

Background

Bicycling is becoming an increasingly popular form of recreation as well as a means of transportation. A field that has been extensively redesigned over the years is the bicycle drive train.

One particular component of the redesigned drive train is the front sprocket assembly. The front sprocket assembly has a chain/spoke protector near the sprocket to prevent shoelaces and clothing from being entangled.

Typically, existing chain/spoke protectors are attached to the crank boss or fixed to the largest sprocket using an axial snap fit. While these existing spoke/chain protectors generally work well, they are typically attached as initial components. In these cases, the possibility for retrofitting the sheeting is small. There is also a need for a component that can be retrofitted to an existing bicycle crank that is relatively simple to manufacture and assemble.

In view of the above, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art from this disclosure that there exists a need for an improved bicycle sprocket cover.

Disclosure of Invention

The primary aspect of the present invention is to provide a retrofittable sprocket cover that includes a coplanar sprocket surface, a cover surface and a fastener collar surface.

Other aspects of the invention will be pointed out or made obvious by the following description of the invention and the accompanying drawings.

The present invention includes a sprocket guard, comprising: a sprocket having sprocket radial spokes with teeth on an outer periphery disposed in a plane CL1, each sprocket radial spoke communicating with the first cylindrical surface; a circular member having circular member radial spokes, each circular member radial spoke communicating with the second cylindrical surface; a collar having an outer cylindrical surface with which the fastener is engaged, the first cylindrical surface and the second cylindrical surface being engaged with the outer cylindrical surface and both being coplanar in a plane CL2, the plane CL1 being offset from the plane CL 2.

Drawings

The accompanying drawings, which are incorporated in and constitute a part of this specification, illustrate preferred embodiments of the invention and together with the description, serve to explain the principles of the invention.

Detailed Description

Fig. 1 is a front perspective view. The guard 10 engages the outer periphery of the crank sprocket. Cranks are used on bicycles.

The fender 10 is circular and is mounted on the sprocket 20 using threaded fasteners 30 that engage collars 32. Washer 31 ensures that fastener 30 does not loosen during use.

The collar 32 includes an outer cylindrical surface 33. The surface 33 engages the receiving surface 21. The surface 21 is cylindrical and is formed between two spokes 22a and 22b of the sprocket 20. Surface 21 is typical in known sprockets.

Surface 21 engages surface 33. Each radial spoke 22a and 22b includes an offset portion 22c that axially displaces the tooth 23 along the axis of rotation a-a. The teeth 23 engage a belt or other annular member.

The shield 10 includes radial spokes 11a and 11 b. The apexes 11c of the spokes 11a and 11b include cylindrical surfaces 13. Surface 13 engages surface 33.

Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view. The teeth 23 are on a plane CL1 perpendicular to the axis of rotation a-a. The apron outer ring 14 is on a plane CL2 perpendicular to the axis of rotation a-a. The plane CL1 is offset from the plane CL2 by a distance "x". The offset portion 22c enables an existing sprocket to be retrofitted with the cover plate 10 without the need to drill mounting holes in the sprocket 20. Collar 32, surface 13 and surface 31 are coplanar in plane CL 2. The outer edge of the collar 32 engages the notch 25, thereby positioning the collar 32 relative to the position of the sprocket 20. The notches 25 are located on the inside of the sprocket 20 and between the spokes 22a and 22b, thereby enhancing the aesthetic appearance of the installed device.

Fig. 3 is a side perspective view. A plurality of fasteners 30 can be used to mount the apron on an existing sprocket.

Fig. 4 is a side view of the crank. Crank arms 40 project from each side of the crank in a manner known in the art. The cover sheet 10 prevents the shoelace or the trouser legs from contacting the sprockets or tangling with the annular members.

A sprocket cover comprising: a sprocket having sprocket radial spokes with teeth on an outer periphery disposed in a plane CL1, each sprocket radial spoke communicating with the first cylindrical surface; a circular member having circular member radial spokes, each circular member radial spoke communicating with the second cylindrical surface; a collar having an outer cylindrical surface with which the fastener is engaged, the first and second cylindrical surfaces being engaged with the outer cylindrical surface in a plane CL2, and the plane CL1 being offset from the plane CL 2.

FIG. 5 is a side elevational view of the bicycle. The crank 70 is mounted on a bicycle bottom bracket 80. A belt B (or chain) is engaged between the sprocket 20 and the hub of the rear wheel 90. The bicycle further includes a frame F, a seat S, a front wheel 91, handlebars H, all as known in the art.

Although forms of the invention have been described herein, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that variations may be made in the construction and relation of parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention described herein.
