1. A tobacco smoke filter or filter element comprising a longitudinally extending core of tobacco smoke filtering material, a first wrapper around the core and a second wrapper around the first wrapper, the first wrapper defining at least with the second wrapper at least one longitudinally extending channel of the filter or filter element, wherein the (or each) longitudinally extending channel extends less than the overall length of the filter or filter element such that there are no longitudinally extending channels in the longitudinally extending portion of the filter or filter element; the filter or filter element further comprises at least one additive release container.

2. A filter or filter element according to claim 1 wherein the longitudinally extending core of tobacco smoke filtering material is a single unitary core of tobacco smoke filtering material.

3. A filter or filter element according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the first wrapper is an air permeable wrapper.

4. A filter or filter element according to any preceding claim wherein at least one additive release container is in registry with the longitudinally extending portion (or longitudinally extending portion) of the filter or filter element having no longitudinally extending channels.

5. A filter or filter element according to any preceding claim wherein at least one additive release container is in registration with the longitudinally extending portion (or longitudinally extending portion) of the filter or filter element comprising a longitudinally extending channel.

6. A filter or filter element according to any preceding claim wherein at least one additive release container is in registration with the following parts of the filter or filter element: at said portion, the longitudinally extending portion (or longitudinally extending portion) of the filter or filter element comprising longitudinally extending channels is contiguous with the longitudinally extending portion (or longitudinally extending portion) of the filter or filter element without longitudinally extending channels.

7. A filter or filter element according to any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the filter or filter element comprises only one additive release container, wherein the additive release container is in register with the longitudinally extending portion (or longitudinally extending portion) of the filter or filter element having no longitudinally extending channels.

8. A filter or filter element according to claim 1 or 6 wherein the filter or filter element comprises only one additive release container, wherein the additive release container is in registration with the longitudinally extending portion (or longitudinally extending portion) of the filter or filter element comprising the longitudinally extending channel.

9. A filter or filter element according to claim 1 or 7 wherein the filter or filter element comprises only one additive release container, wherein the additive release container is in registration with: at said portion, the longitudinally extending portion (or longitudinally extending portion) of the filter or filter element comprising longitudinally extending channels is contiguous with the longitudinally extending portion (or longitudinally extending portion) of the filter or filter element without longitudinally extending channels.

10. A filter or filter element according to any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the filter or filter element comprises two additive release containers, wherein one additive release container is in registry with the longitudinally extending portion (or longitudinally extending portion) of the filter or filter element having no longitudinally extending channels and one additive release container is in registry with the longitudinally extending portion (or longitudinally extending portion) of the filter or filter element having longitudinally extending channels.

A filter or filter element according to any preceding claim comprising: at least one channel extending longitudinally from an upstream end of the filter or filter element and at least one channel extending longitudinally from a downstream end of the filter or filter element, and a central portion of the filter or filter element having no longitudinally extending channels.

12. A filter or filter element according to any preceding claim comprising at least one channel extending longitudinally from a first end of the filter or filter element, wherein a second end of the filter or filter element is free of longitudinally extending channels.

13. A filter or filter element according to any preceding claim comprising at least one longitudinally extending channel of the filter or filter element and extending only part of the length of the filter or filter element, the at least one longitudinally extending channel being located in a central portion of the filter or filter element such that the channel (or channels) does not extend from the upstream or downstream end of the filter or filter element.

14. A filter or filter element according to any preceding claim wherein the first wrapper has longitudinally extending corrugations which define the longitudinally extending channels at least with the second wrapper.

15. A filter or filter element according to any preceding claim wherein the additive release container is a capsule, for example a frangible capsule.

16. A filter or filter element according to any preceding claim wherein the additive release container comprises an additive in the form of a flavour.

17. A filter or filter element according to any preceding claim wherein the first wrapper comprises a pigment.

18. A filter or filter element according to claim 17 wherein the first wrapper comprises a pigment which provides a colour which is significantly different to the colour of the tobacco smoke filtering material and/or the second wrapper.

19. A tobacco smoke filter or filter element comprising a longitudinally extending core of tobacco smoke filtering material, a first wrapper around the core and a second wrapper around the first wrapper, the first wrapper defining at least with the second wrapper at least one longitudinally extending channel of the filter or filter element, wherein the (or each) longitudinally extending channel extends less than the overall length of the filter or filter element such that there are no longitudinally extending channels in the longitudinally extending portion of the filter or filter element; the filter or filter element further comprises only one additive release container, wherein the additive release container is in registration with the longitudinally extending portion of the filter or filter element without longitudinally extending channels, wherein the additive release container is a capsule and contains an additive in the form of a flavour.

20. A filter smoking article comprising a filter or filter element according to any preceding claim bonded to one end of a wrapped tobacco rod.

21. A method of making a tobacco smoke filter or filter element, the method comprising: providing an air permeable axially extending core, forming a first wrapper around the core, and wrapping a second wrapper around the wrapped core, the first wrapper defining at least with the second wrapper at least one longitudinally extending channel of the filter or filter element, wherein the (or each) longitudinally extending channel extends less than the overall length of the filter or filter element such that the longitudinally extending portion of the filter or filter element is free of longitudinally extending channels, wherein the filter or filter element is formed as a continuous rod of a plurality of filters or filter elements, and wherein the step (or steps) of cutting the continuous rod to form individual filters or filter elements is arranged such that cut ends form an upstream end of the filter or filter element and a downstream end of the filter or filter element, wherein an additive release container (e.g., a bladder, such as a frangible bladder) is inserted into the filter or filter element by methods known in the art.

22. A method of tobacco smoke filter or filter element production in which a succession of tobacco smoke filtering material is advanced continuously in a longitudinal direction, the advancing filtering material is gathered towards a rod shape, and the gathered advancing filtering material is shaped and fixed in rod form to provide a continuous rod;

wherein an additive release container is inserted into the gathered advancing filter material as the filter material is shaped and secured in rod form; and is

Wherein a first inner wrapper and a second outer wrapper are applied around the gathered advancing filter material as it is shaped and secured in rod form;

the inner wrap includes profiled portions longitudinally spaced between flat portions, the profiled portions of the first wrap and the second wrap together defining a longitudinally extending channel of the rod such that the continuous rod includes a portion having a longitudinally extending channel separated by a portion that does not include a longitudinally extending channel.

23. A method of producing a tobacco smoke filter or filter element according to any of claims 1 to 19 wherein a succession of tobacco smoke filtering material is advanced continuously in a longitudinal direction, the advancing filtering material is gathered towards a rod shape and the gathered advancing filtering material is shaped and fixed in rod form to provide a continuous rod;

wherein an additive release container is inserted into the gathered advancing filter material as the filter material is shaped and secured in rod form; and is

Wherein a first inner wrapper and a second outer wrapper are applied around the gathered advancing filter material as it is shaped and secured in rod form;

the inner wrap includes profiled portions longitudinally spaced between flat portions, the profiled portions of the first wrap and the second wrap together defining a longitudinally extending channel of the rod such that the continuous rod includes a portion having a longitudinally extending channel separated by a portion that does not include a longitudinally extending channel.

24. The method of claim 22 or 23, wherein the additive release container is inserted into the gathered advancing filter material in registration with the flat portion of the first wrapper.
