1. A damper (1) for a fitting for furniture or a household appliance has a housing (2), wherein a piston connected to the piston rod (3) is guided in a linearly displaceable manner and divides an inner space (20) in the housing (2) into two chambers, wherein at least one flow channel (9) is formed on or in the piston, which connects the two chambers to each other, wherein a throttle element (6) is provided which in a damping position keeps the at least one flow channel (9) with a small cross-section for generating a high damping force when the piston is moved in a first direction, and increasing the cross-section of the at least one flow passage (9) by moving the throttle member to reduce the damping force when the piston moves in a second direction opposite to the first direction, characterized in that the throttle element (6) is pretensioned into the damping position by means of at least one spring element (72), the piston (3) is pretensioned into the extended position of the piston rod (3) by means of a spring (8).

2. Damper according to claim 1, characterized in that the throttle element (6) and the at least one spring element (72) are made of different materials.

3. Damper according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the throttle element (6) is fixed in a clamping manner between the holder (30) and the spring element (72).

4. Damper according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the throttle element is designed as a piston ring.

5. Damper according to claim 4, characterized in that the fixing element (7) fixed to the piston rod (3) has an integrally formed spring element (72), the piston ring being pretensioned by means of the spring element (72) to form the cage (30) connected to the piston rod (3).

6. Damper according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that a fixing element (7) is provided, which is fixed in the sleeve-shaped piston rod (3) by means of a pin (70) and is preferably held by means of a clamping force.

7. Damper according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the housing (2) is pot-shaped and has a seal (4) in the area adjacent to the opening, the seal (4) having an inner opening (40) for passing through the piston rod (3).

8. Damper according to claim 7, characterized in that the seal (4) is displaceably mounted on the housing (2), volume compensation being effected by insertion or extraction of the piston rod (3).

9. Damper according to claim 7 or 8, characterized in that the seal (4) is held in the housing (2) by means of a cover (5).

10. Damper according to claim 9, characterized in that the cover (5) has an outer part (50) which is fixed to the housing (2) and an inner part (51) which abuts on the seal (4), wherein the outer part (50) is connected to the inner part (51) by at least one spring arm (52).

11. Damper according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that at least one step (21, 22) for receiving the displaceable seal (4) and/or the cover (5) is provided on the side of the pot-shaped housing (2) opposite the base (23).

12. Damper according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the maximum stroke of the piston rod (3) is less than 6mm, in particular between 3mm and 5 mm.

13. Damper according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the throttle element (6) is formed as a piston ring, on which a flow channel (61) is arranged, which flow channel (61) has a first hole (62) on the inside and a second hole (63) on the outside, seen in the radial direction.
