1. A laundry detergent composition comprising a benzoate salt and a linear alkyl benzoate surfactant, said composition having a pH of from 5.0 to 7.5.

2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the benzoate salt is an alkali metal salt.

3. The composition according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the benzoate salt is sodium benzoate.

4. The composition of any preceding claim, wherein the benzoate salt is present at 0.2-2.5 wt% of the composition.

5. A composition according to any preceding claim comprising a soil release polymer.

6. The composition of any preceding claim, comprising an ethyleneimine.

7. The composition of any preceding claim, comprising an encapsulated fragrance.

8. The composition of any of the preceding claims, comprising free fragrance.

Examples

Challenge testing method

Sub-samples of the non-preserved and individually dosed product were subjected to a modified challenge test of the european pharmacopoeia (ph. eur. or EP)5.1.3 standard. The bacterial challenge test library and the inoculation levels are summarized in table 1. The microbial challenge library was added to each sample container at a ratio of 1: 100. The final concentration of inoculum in the product should be 5X 106CFU/G test product. Each product was mixed with a sterile spatula to ensure that the inoculum was evenly distributed throughout the product.

Both inoculum and microorganism levels were quantified in each sample using a Total Viable Count (TVC) pour plate method on days 7, 14, 21 and 28. A1: 10 dilution was performed with a sub-sample of each product, separately in peptone (0.1%)/Tween80 (2%) neutralizer. Each subsample was diluted 1:10 and 1:100 and a pour plate was created at each dilution using Tryptone Soy Agar (TSA). TSA plates were incubated at 28 ℃ for 48 hours, and then examined for growth. Visible colonies were counted and recorded by means of a Quebec Colony Counter for analysis against challenge test standards. During removal of subsamples of product for TVC, re-inoculation was performed on days 7 and 14, reintroducing 5 x 10 prior to mixing using a sterile spatula6CFU/G bacteria to homogenize the re-inoculation.

The table above demonstrates the enhanced preservative performance of sodium benzoate in the presence of LAS surfactant.
