1. A topical composition comprising erythrulose and caprylate, characterized in that the weight ratio (w/w) of caprylate to erythrulose is >1.

2. The topical composition according to claim 1, characterized in that the caprylate is glyceryl caprylate.

3. The topical composition according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the amount of erythrulose is selected from the range of about 0.01 to 3 wt. -%, most preferably from 0.025 to 2 wt. -%, such as in an amount of from 0.04 to 1 wt. -%, particularly advantageously from 0.04 to 0.75 wt. -%, based on the total weight of the composition.

4. The topical composition according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the amount of caprylate is selected in the range of 0.1 to 2 wt. -%, preferably in the range of 0.2 to 1.5 wt. -%, most preferably in the range of 0.3 to 1 wt. -%, based on the total weight of the composition.

5. The topical composition according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the weight ratio is selected from the range of 1.25 to 3, preferably 1.5 to 2.5.

6. The topical composition of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the composition is a cosmetic composition or a pharmaceutical composition.

7. The topical composition of claim 6, wherein the composition is a shampoo preparation, a hair conditioner, an O/W emulsion, a W/O emulsion, or a gel.

8. The topical composition of any one of claims 1 or 7, wherein the composition further comprises water and at least one agent selected from the group consisting of surfactants, emulsifiers, thickeners, and oils.

9. A method of treating skin and/or scalp comprising the step of contacting the skin and/or scalp with a topical composition according to any one of claims 1 to 8.

10. The method according to claim 9 for maintaining healthy skin homeostasis and/or for maintaining skin microbiome balance.

11. A mixture of erythrulose and caprylate, preferably erythrulose and glyceryl caprylate, preferably in a weight ratio (w/w) >1 to erythrulose, for use in the treatment of acne.

12. The topical composition according to any one of claims 1 to 8 for use in the treatment, prevention and/or prophylaxis of diseases and/or conditions induced by fungal cells and/or bacterial cells, preferably for use in the treatment, prevention and/or prophylaxis of acne.

13. A method of killing and/or inhibiting the growth of microbial cells, in particular fungal and/or bacterial cells, preferably p.acnes and c.albicans, said method comprising contacting said cells with a mixture of erythrulose and caprylate, preferably a mixture of erythrulose and caprylin.

14. The method according to claim 13, wherein the microbial cells are p.acnes, s.epitimis, c.xerosis, a.brasiliensis, c.albicans, p.aeruginosa, e.coli, m.furfur and/or s.aureus, preferably p.acnes and c.albicans.

15. Use of a mixture of erythrulose and caprylate, preferably a mixture of erythrulose and caprylin, as an antimicrobial agent against p.acnes, s.epidemis, c.xerosis, a.brasiliensis, c.albicans, p.aeruginosa, e.coli, m.furfur and/or s.aureus, preferably p.acnes and c.albicans.

Example 1: synergistic effect against microorganisms

Antimicrobial efficacy was evaluated similarly to the modulated challenge test method (NF EN ISO 11930). Thus, solutions of each active in ethanol were prepared and further dissolved in physiological serum with 0.85 wt% NaCl at the concentrations shown in table 1 under sterile conditions. The samples were dissolved in physiological serum supplemented with 1 wt% ethanol. A control (C1) was prepared based on serum with 0.85 wt% NaCl and 1 wt% ethanol under sterile conditions.

The control and the solution of one or more actives were placed in a 96-deep well plate (1.6 ml/well). Each well was contaminated, resulting in initial contamination as outlined in table 1. After contamination, each well was mixed well to ensure uniform distribution of bacteria. Each plate was then incubated at 22 ℃ for 24 h. The (remaining) population was counted 24 hours after contamination.

Anti-yeast

Table 1: results for 0.1% erythrulose (corresponding to 0.08% active)

As can be seen in the above table, the combination of erythrulose and glyceryl caprylate showed a synergistic effect against Candidaalbicans. Erythrulose < glyceryl caprylate combinations performed best.

Anti-acne

Table 2: results for 0.1% erythrulose (corresponding to 0.08% active)

Figure BDA0002354638720000101

As can be seen from the above table, the combination of erythrulose and glyceryl caprylate showed a synergistic effect against propionibacteriums. To achieve sterile conditions, the combination of erythrulose < glyceryl caprylate performed best.
