Technical Field
The invention relates to a method for measuring the morpho-geometric parameters of an individual who has to wear spectacles.
More precisely, the invention relates to a method and a system for determining the pupillary distance of an individual.
Background
The morpho-geometric characteristics of an individual who must wear spectacles are fundamental parameters measured in order to manufacture a lens that fits well with said individual. These parameters include interpupillary distance, monocular pupillary distance, anteversion angle, etc. It is important to achieve accurate measurements of these parameters because errors result in the manufacture of unsuitable lenses, which in turn results in eye discomfort for the individual while wearing his/her glasses.
Methods and apparatus for achieving accurate measurements by a dispenser are known. However, the methods currently used do not provide satisfactory results when performing on-line measurements.
For example, ideally, measurement of the interpupillary distance requires the individual to stand in a natural position and look straight at a point a few meters (e.g., 5 meters) in front of him/her, horizontal to the eye, or looking at the horizon without a point of view. This simulates looking at a point at infinity, which is necessary for accurate measurement of the interpupillary distance.
While this is easy to achieve by the optician, it is more difficult to achieve when an individual must make measurements by himself/herself. Current online measurement methods require an individual to look at his/her computer or the camera of a tablet. Since the computer or tablet is typically located less than one meter from the individual, the measured interpupillary distance corresponds to the mid-view and is shorter than the interpupillary distance measured when the individual looks at infinity.
To overcome this measurement error, prior art methods correct the measurement by using the law that relates the interpupillary distance to near convergence. However, this law assumes an average eye radius of curvature that does not correspond to each individual eye radius of curvature.
In addition, convergence depends on the distance between the individual's eyes and the object he/she is looking at. This distance can be estimated but cannot be measured accurately.
Thus, the corrected measurements are still not accurate enough to provide the individual with a lens adapted to his/her morphological geometrical characteristics.
In the case of measuring the monocular pupil distance, the measurement error is even larger. Monocular pupillary distance is the distance between the individual's nasion and one of his/her pupils. Knowing the monocular pupil distance of the individual allows for precise positioning of the lens relative to the bridge of the spectacle frame and thus proper alignment of the lens with each pupil of the individual.
As online eyewear ordering becomes more prevalent, the need for accurate online measurements increases.

Fig. 1 shows an individual 2 looking straight ahead at infinity. Fig. 1 shows the definition of several parameters with respect to the spectacle frame and with respect to the head of an individual 2. The image has a coordinate system (x, y) defined by a horizontal axis (0x) and a vertical axis (0 y). For example, the two axes (0x), (0y) correspond to the horizontal and vertical edges of the image, respectively.
Each pixel of the image has an address in the coordinate system (x, y) of the image.
The size of an element appearing on an image is referred to as "pixel size", and the size of an element in reality is referred to as "actual size".
The method according to the invention allows determining the pupillary distance of the individual 2. Herein, "pupillary distance" is used as a generic term to refer to a morphological measurement of at least one pupil of the individual 2. More specifically, the pupillary distance may refer to the interpupillary distance IPD, the left monocular pupillary distance MPDL, and the right monocular pupillary distance MPDR. These parameters are shown in figure 1.

The method for determining the pupillary distance is based on processing the acquired images of the individual 2 and comprises the following steps represented in fig. 2:
-a preliminary step: the method is explained to the individual 2,
step S10: the image of the face of the individual 2 is calibrated,
step S20: acquiring an image, comprising the steps of:
optional step S202: an alignment step, in which the individual 2 is instructed to align the mirror image of his/her face with the alignment target displayed on the
optional step S204: the spectacle frame of the individual 2 is recorded,
-step S206: displaying an object on a screen positioned in front of the individual 2, the displayed object being positioned in front of one eye of the individual 2,
-step S208: instructing the individual 2 to look at the displayed object at least with the eye,
-a step S210: at least one image of a part of the body of the individual 2 comprising said eye is acquired,
step S30: processing the acquired image, comprising the steps of:
-a step S302: determining the position of a plurality of specific features in the acquired image, one of these specific features being the pupil of said eye of the individual 2,
-step S304: the pupillary distance is calculated based on the location of the plurality of specific features.
Several embodiments of this method are described below.
A first possible embodiment will now be described.
The method may comprise preliminary steps to explain the method to individual 2 in order to better prepare him/her and help him/her to relax (the relaxed state of individual 2 is important in order to ensure the natural posture of the body, including the back of the neck, shoulders and back). During this explanation step, for example, a description of each step of the method may be displayed on the
The method comprises a step S10 of calibrating an image of the face of the individual 2. The purpose of step S10 of calibrating the image is to calculate the conversion factor of the pixels of the object (

Specifically, the a size AS corresponds to the width of one rim of the frame. The D size DS is the length of the bridge of the frame and the L size LS is the length of the temple.

According to another example, an image of a print size may be captured by the image capturing unit 6. An Optical Character Recognition (OCR) algorithm is used with the acquired image to retrieve the geometric parameters.
In order to obtain the pixel size of the
According to another example, the image acquisition unit 6 is equipped with 3-dimensional technology and is able to measure the three-dimensional position of the face of the individual 2, more precisely the pupil of the individual 2.
For example, if the
In case the individual 2 does not have a
In this case, the image pickup unit picks up an image of an individual 2 holding an object of known size near both his/her eyes. Carrying out the further steps of: a pixel range of the object of known size is determined. The range of images of objects of known size is then used during the step of calculating the pupillary distance (described below).
The actual dimensions of the object of known dimensions may have been stored by the calculation unit 8.
Once the actual size of the object and the pixel size are acquired, the computer 4 of the individual 2 transmits them to the server via the telecommunication link 10 and the conversion coefficients are calculated by the calculation unit 8.
The step S10 of calibrating the image may be performed at any time of the method.
During a step S20 of acquiring an image, individual 2 receives instructions from the server. The instructions are displayed on a
First, the individual 2 is invited to sit comfortably in front of his/her computer 4 (or tablet or smartphone or cellular phone), more specifically in front of the image acquisition unit 6 which is preferably attached to a
The individual 2 is then instructed to start the acquisition process of the image acquisition unit 6.
In a preferred example, the image acquisition unit 6 acquires a video, i.e. a sequence of images, of the individual 2. The images (also called frames) (each) are processed by the calculation unit 8 using an image mirroring algorithm to obtain a mirror image. This image mirroring algorithm can be implemented in real time and the resulting mirrored video can be displayed by the
Alternatively, for each step of the method, the image acquisition unit 6 acquires a single image of the individual 2.
To facilitate the measurement, the method may comprise an optional alignment step S202 to help the individual 2 to center his/her face for the measurement.
In this alignment step S202, the screen can provide a mirror image of the image acquired by the acquisition unit 6 and an alignment target in real time. The alignment target includes, for example, a predetermined contour similar to the contour of a general human face. The alignment target includes, for example, a generally elliptical shape. The individual 2 is instructed to position himself/herself such that the image of his/her face displayed on the screen matches within the alignment target.
The face is well aligned during the image capturing step S20, which facilitates the subsequent step S30 of processing the image, and reduces calculation errors.
Furthermore, this helps to make the sagittal plane of the head of the individual 2 perpendicular to the acquisition unit 6.
When the sagittal plane of the head of the individual 2 is perpendicular to the acquisition unit 6, the individual 2 looks straight ahead at the acquisition unit. The interpupillary distance IPD and monocular pupil distances MPDL, MPDR are maximized on the image and appear to be of practical size. In the case of an even slight rotation of the head of the individual 2 to one side, the interpupillary distance IPD and the monocular pupil distances MPDL, MPDR exhibit shorter lengths on the image than in reality.
In case the individual 2 already owns the

In the step S210 of acquiring at least one image, the image acquisition unit acquires at least one image, preferably a plurality of images, of a portion of the body of the individual 2 comprising the one eye (here the
Once the image of the individual 2 is acquired, the individual 2 is instructed to stop the image acquisition. For example, individual 2 is instructed to click a corresponding button on the user interface. Alternatively, the method is automated.
In order to accurately determine the pupillary distance, it is necessary that the individual 2 does not move a substantial distance closer to or further away from the acquisition unit during the step S20 of acquiring images.
As previously mentioned, determining the pupillary distance from the acquired image requires the use of transformation coefficients. As described above, this conversion coefficient is calculated based on the image of the individual 2 wearing the spectacle frame 9 (or holding an object of known size). If the individual 2 moves a considerable distance from the image acquisition unit between capturing the calibration image and capturing the measurement image, the pixel size of the elements in the image changes and the calculated conversion coefficients will lead to an erroneous calculation of the pupil distance.
In practice, the difference between the distance of the individual 2 to the image acquisition unit 6 between the two sets of measurements should be much shorter than the average interpupillary distance IPD, i.e. much shorter than 65mm, for example shorter than 6.5 mm.
Then, step S30 of processing the acquired image is performed.
A first step S302 of determining the location of a particular feature in an acquired image is performed. As illustrated in fig. 6a, one of these particular features includes the
For example, the

The distance between the two
Another particular feature, in the case where no image of the individual 2 wearing the spectacle frame is acquired, comprises the nasion 7 of the individual 2 (not shown).
In another example, the particular characteristic may be automatically determined by an algorithm. In practice, the calculation unit 8 is programmed to identify, in the acquired images, an image of the pupil and an image of the spectacle frame. This is achieved by prior art image processing.
In another example, the particular characteristic may be determined by a person remotely connected to the optician server.
Where a stream of images has been acquired, the particular feature may be located on the plurality of images by the individual 2, automatically, or by an operator. The average position of the particular feature is then calculated based on its position on each image. This allows for a reduction in the position error of a particular feature.
In the case when the reference for measuring the monocular pupil distance is the center of the bridge of the frame, the immobility of the individual 2 is very important during the step S20 of acquiring the images, since the position of the center of the
This is why the measurement accuracy is further improved and the displacement of the individual 2 between the two images can be evaluated. For example, the position of a reference feature of the individual 2 in both images may be tracked. The reference features include, for example, nostrils of the individual 2 or corners of the
If the position of the reference feature changes in the image, the individual 2 is not completely stationary. In this case, the measurement can be corrected using the change in the position of the reference feature to improve the accuracy of the measurement.
In the case where the nasion (rather than the center of the bridge of the frame in the previous example) is used as a reference, it is also useful to track the position of the nasion from different images to ensure that the same point is used as a reference in different measurements.
Finally, in step S304 of calculating the pupil distance, the pupil distance is calculated based on the position of the specific feature.
According to an example, the left monocular pupil distance MPDL is calculated.
For example, the calculation unit 8 determines the position of the center of the
Other specific features for the calculation are for example the

The pupillary distance measured according to the method of the invention is accurate because the measurement error is greatly reduced.
In order to determine his/her other monocular pupil distance (right monocular pupil distance MPDR according to the example), some of the steps of acquiring an image S20 and processing the image S30 are repeated for the other eye.
In this case, another

Then, the acquisition unit acquires at least one further image of a part of the body of the individual 2 comprising the other eye.
For the reasons explained earlier, the individual 2 should not move a substantial distance between the measurement set with respect to the

The calculation of the further monocular pupil distance MPDR is calculated based on the address of the pixel corresponding to the center of the further pupil of the individual 2 and the address of the pixel corresponding to one of the other specific features (e.g., the
Once both monocular pupil distances MPDL, MPDR are calculated, the interpupillary distance IPD may be obtained by adding them.
The method of determining the pupillary distance IPD, MPDL, MPDR may be followed by the step of manufacturing the lenses and delivering them to individual 2. The lens specification includes the interpupillary distance IPD and monocular pupil distances MPDL, MPDR calculated according to the method. The lenses may be fitted into a spectacle frame selected by the individual 2 and then delivered to the individual 2.
In a variant of the invention, the
In step S206 of displaying the object, the predetermined shape is displayed on the
Alternatively, the first approximate interpupillary distance of the individual 2 is determined, for example by means of a facial recognition algorithm. These stored shapes are then displayed on the screen at a distance similar to the first approximate interpupillary distance.
This variant requires that the calculation unit 8 knows the size of the pixels of the display screen. This information is easily retrieved using a suitable algorithm.
In another variation, in the instructing step S208, the individual 2 is first instructed to look at an object displayed on the screen in front of one of his eyes (a real-time display of an image of his/her eyes or a stored shape). The individual 2 is then instructed to look at an object displayed in front of his/her eyes about a vertical axis a of his/her body while looking at the objectV(fig. 1) turn his/her head.
In step S210 of capturing at least one image, the capturing unit captures his/her video while the individual 2 follows the instructions to rotate his/her head.
These steps may be performed for both eyes of the individual 2.
In the step 30 of processing the acquired images, the specific feature is located on the plurality of acquired images. The step S302 of locating a specific feature is preferably performed automatically.
The calculation unit 8 determines a set of values of the monocular pupil distance MPDL, MPDR, and the interpupillary distance IPD based on the positions of the specific features on the plurality of images.
Then, the calculation unit 8 can retrieve the maximum values of the monocular pupil distance MPDL, MPDR, and the interpupillary distance IPD from the respective sets of values. These maxima correspond to images in which the sagittal plane associated with the individual 2 is perpendicular to the acquisition unit.
Thanks to this embodiment of the method, measurement errors due to incorrect positioning of the head of the individual 2 are reduced.
Another embodiment of the method is now described.
In the second embodiment, the interpupillary distance IPD is directly calculated without calculating the monocular pupil distances MPDL, MPDR.
In this embodiment, the individual 2 is instructed to look at an object displayed in front of one eye with one of his/her eyes and with the other of his/her eyes. As explained above in connection with the first embodiment, the object is preferably a real-time display of a mirror image of the face of the individual 2.
Fig. 8a shows a real-time display of the screen in case an object is displayed in front of his/her right eye. It can be seen in fig. 8a that the
At least one image of the individual 2 is acquired while looking with one of his/her eyes and with the other of his/her eyes at an object displayed in front of one of his/her eyes. For the sake of clarity, this image will be referred to as the
The individual 2 is then instructed to look at another object displayed in front of his/her other eye with one of his/her eyes and with the other of his/her eyes. The object is preferably a real-time display of a mirror image of the other eye of the individual 2.
