Technical Field
The present invention relates to a carton-based package and a blank for such a package. The invention also relates to a method of forming a package from a package blank and to a filled package.
Background
It is known to provide so-called flow-wrap packages which are constructed of a flexible container comprising front, rear and side panels and which is sealed at either end, typically with one end of the seal also being crimped or embossed to provide a patterned sealing portion.
Generally, such flow-wrap packages are manufactured using horizontal or vertical form, fill, and seal processes. In a horizontal filling, forming and sealing process, the flexible packaging film is passed through a mechanism that folds the material around the product, then clamps and seals the ends of the folded material, and then cuts to provide sealed packages. Such packages can be passed relatively quickly through suitable machinery to produce many filled packages per minute.
Conversely, there are a number of paperboard based packages which are formed from paperboard blanks and folded to provide packaging containers which can then be sealed in a suitable manner. Examples of paperboard packages include, for example, standard paperboard boxes, easy-to-shelve packages, and the like.
To date, it has been thought that it is not possible to provide paperboard-based packages that resemble in shape and appearance flow-wrap packages made by standard horizontal or vertical form, fill, and seal processes.
It would therefore be advantageous to provide a paperboard package similar in shape and appearance to standard flow wrap packages, while producing such packages economically and simply from paperboard blanks, preferably using standard paperboard packaging equipment.
Furthermore, it would be advantageous to provide a paperboard package in which there is a crimped or patterned end fin portion of the flow-wrap package to provide a generally realistic flow-wrap pattern for the paperboard package, such a closure being easily openable despite being thicker in material than a standard film closure.
It is therefore an aim of embodiments of the present invention to overcome or mitigate at least some of the problems of the prior art.
Disclosure of Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a package comprising opposed and spaced apart front and rear panels separated by side panels extending therebetween, wherein the marginal sealing regions of each end of the front and rear panels are sealed together, and wherein at least a portion of an edge of at least one end of the side panels is not connected to the marginal sealing regions of the front and rear panels, and wherein the panels are formed substantially from paperboard.
In some embodiments, at least a portion of one end edge of both side panels is not connected to the edge seal region. In other embodiments, at least a portion of the two end edges of the two side panels are not connected to the edge seal area.
In some embodiments, at least one end of at least one or both side panels comprises at least one cut-out region or aperture, one edge or edges of which are not connected to the edge seal regions of the front and back panels.
In some embodiments, at least one end of at least one or both side panels comprises a plurality of cut out regions or apertures, one edge or edges of which are not connected to the edge seal regions of the front and back panels.
In some embodiments, a fold line is provided extending along each side panel so that the package can be flattened when desired.
In some embodiments, each panel is essentially comprised of paperboard, but may contain small amounts of other materials, such as laminate films, printed materials, etc. on one or both sides of the panel.
The edge regions of the front and back panels may be sealed by means of a reclosable seal or a peelable seal. The seal may be formed by means of a peelable adhesive, which may be a resealable adhesive, such as a heat sensitive adhesive, a cold seal adhesive, or the like. In alternative embodiments, or in addition to the use of an adhesive, the seal may also be formed by welding, such as by a peelable weld.
In other embodiments, the edge regions of the front and rear panels may be sealed by means of mechanical seals, such as zip locks, finger-pressure seals, clip-on seals, and the like.
In some embodiments, a reseal tab may be provided for securing the rim regions together after initial opening. The tab may have adhesive on at least one face whereby the tab is secured to the outside of the marginal portion of the front or rear panel to join and secure these parts together.
The crimping or embossing may be performed along at least a portion of the sealed rim portion, and in some embodiments, along substantially all of the rim portion. In addition to the configuration that results in the overall structure of the package, crimping or embossing the sealed rim portion also results in a paperboard package having a pattern that is equivalent or substantially equivalent to an equivalent polymeric flow wrap package formed by a conventional horizontal or vertical filling, forming and sealing process.
The side panels may comprise substantially flat panels. In other embodiments, the side panels may include creases or fold lines extending along the side panels. By including a fold line in the side panel provided, which extends along the side panel, the package can be kept substantially flat before filling with product, during storage and transport, or be gradually flattened after removal of the product therefrom.
In some embodiments, the end regions of the side panels comprise chevron-shaped end regions. The gable end regions of the side panels may comprise folds or fold lines. In some embodiments, the gable end region comprises a quadrilateral panel comprising a triangular or V-shaped fold line configuration. This configuration allows the gable end region to be folded between the front and rear panels in use to provide a partially sealed end region of the package, whilst maintaining the side panels substantially perpendicular to the front and rear panels.
The inclusion of at least a portion of the edge of the side panel that is not connected to the sealing edge region allows the user to push against this end of the side panel with his or her fingers, thereby making it easier to separate the sealed ends of the front and back panels. If there is an opening or cut in the edge, the user is given more space to insert his or her finger.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a package comprising opposed and spaced apart front and rear panels separated by side panels extending therebetween, the region of each end of the side panels including a corner insertion region, wherein the edge regions of each end of the front and rear panels are sealed together and to the corner insertion regions of the side panels form a sealed end region of the package, and wherein the panels are formed substantially from cardboard.
In some embodiments, each panel is essentially comprised of paperboard, but may contain small amounts of other materials, such as laminate films, printed materials, etc. on one or both sides of the panel.
The rim regions at each end of the front and rear plates may comprise integral rim regions or fin regions connected to or integral with the plates.
The sealed rim portion may be crimped or embossed along at least a portion of the sealed rim portion, and in some embodiments, along substantially all of the rim area. In addition to obtaining the overall structure of the package, crimping or embossing the sealed rim portion also results in a paperboard package having a pattern that is equivalent or substantially equivalent to an equivalent polymeric flow wrap package formed by a conventional horizontal or vertical filling, forming and sealing process.
The side panels may comprise substantially flat panels. In other embodiments, the side panels may have inset corners and may include creases or fold lines extending along the side panels that may abut the edge inset corner regions of the side panels. The gusseted side panels may keep the package flat prior to filling with product, during storage and shipping, or cause the package to gradually flatten after removing product therefrom.
The edge gusseted regions of the side panels may include creases or fold lines, and may include a triangular folded configuration extending from the creases or fold lines. This configuration allows the edge gusseted region to be folded between the front and rear panels in use to provide a sealed end region of the package, while maintaining the side panels substantially orthogonal to the front and rear panels.
The package may include a fin extending along at least a portion of the junction of the front panel, the back panel, and the side panels. The fins may be formed by folds or fold lines in the front and rear panels and/or the side panels, adjacent the junctions between the front, rear and side panels.
