Technical Field

The present invention relates to the field of rubber compositions reinforced by inorganic fillers, in particular for the manufacture of tires or semi-finished products for tires, in particular treads for these tires.

Background

The rubber composition determines to a large extent the road properties of the tire. Originally, carbon black was used as a reinforcing filler in rubber compositions to limit the wear of tires.

However, as the need to save fuel and protect the environment has become a priority, it has proved necessary to produce tyres having a reduced rolling resistance without adversely affecting their wear resistance.

Furthermore, it is known in the tire art that improvement of one performance property often penalizes another performance property. This is the case for rolling resistance and wear resistance, as these performance properties are contradictory.

Therefore, tire manufacturers seek a compromise between these two performance properties.

In particular, it is possible to achieve said objects by using, in the treads of these tires, novel rubber compositions reinforced by inorganic fillers (in particular specific silicas of the highly dispersible type) capable of competing from the reinforcing viewpoint with conventional tire-grade carbon blacks, while providing these compositions with low hysteresis (equivalent to the low rolling resistance of the tires comprising these compositions).

The use of treads containing such highly dispersible silicas as fillers ("highly dispersible" denoted "HD" and "highly dispersible silica" denoted "HDs") in low rolling resistance tires (sometimes referred to as "green tires") to save energy for the user ("green tire concept") has been widely described. Reference will be made in particular to patent applications EP0501227, EP0692492, EP0692493, EP0735088, EP0767206, EP0786493, EP0881252, WO99/02590, WO99/02601, WO99/02602, WO99/06480, WO00/05300 and WO 00/05301. These prior art documents teach the use of specific surface areas of between 100 and 250m2Between/g of HD-type silica.

Among these HD silicas, silicas having a high specific surface area are preferably used. High specific surface area is generally intended to mean at least 130m2A/g, or even greater than or equal to 150m2Surface area in g. The advantage of using silica with a high specific surface area is mainly that it is possible to increaseThe number of bonds between the silica and the elastomer is increased and thus the reinforcement level of the silica is increased. This is why the use of silicas having a high specific surface area in the rubber compositions of tire treads is advantageous, in particular in order to improve the wear resistance of these treads. Has a specific surface area of about 160m2Examples of silica in g, mention may be made of the silica sold by Solvay

Figure BDA0002336089980000011

1165MP silica, which is the benchmark in the field of "green tires".

However, it is known that increasing the specific surface area of silica is detrimental to the hysteresis properties of the rubber composition, which can be detrimental to rolling resistance.

It would still be beneficial for tire manufacturers to continue to improve the rolling resistance/wear performance compromise, particularly by specifically modifying the morphology of the silica.

To this end, the applicant has described in its patent application WO03/016387 a class of highly dispersible silicas having a higher specific surface area than those of the silicas known at present. These silicas provide compositions comprising them with a significantly improved abrasion resistance without adversely affecting the other properties of these compositions (in particular rolling resistance).

The applicant has continued their research and has surprisingly found that the use of silica having a specific morphology as reinforcing inorganic filler in rubber compositions enables an excellent rolling resistance/abrasion resistance compromise to be achieved. This compromise is superior to that provided by the existing silicas with high specific surface area, commonly used in the treads of "green tires".

Detailed Description

I. Detailed description of the invention

I.1 measurement and test of use

Characterization of silica

The silica is characterized as follows.

CTAB specific surface area (S)CTAB) Measurement of

Principle of measurement

CTAB specific surface area (S) was determined according to the internal procedure derived from appendix G of standard NF ISO 5794-1, month 6 2010 (S)CTAB) The value of (c). The method is based on the adsorption of CTAB (N-hexadecyl-N, N, N-trimethylammonium bromide) on the "outer" surface of the silica.

CTAB was adsorbed to silica in aqueous suspension under magnetic stirring. After separation of the liquid phase using a centrifuge, the excess of unadsorbed CTAB was determined by titration with sodium bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (called "OT" in the rest of the description) using a titrator, the titration point being given by the maximum turbidity of the solution and determined by photometric electrodes.

The silica sample was pressed into a powder using a mortar and pestle and then passed through a 150 μm sieve.

A sample of 0.35. + -. 0.005g of sieved silica was weighed and the weight of this sample was expressed as P1.

The sample was carefully added to the weighing flask, and a magnetic stir bar was added to the weighing flask.

Then 30.0mL of CTAB solution was added and left under magnetic stirring at 1100rpm for 40 minutes.

Separation of V-silica

Immediately after adsorption to silica, all suspensions were poured into centrifuge tubes.

The silica was separated from the suspension by centrifugation at 8000rpm for 30 minutes.

Analysis of CTAB after V.adsorption

A pipette was used to directly remove 10.0mL of the CTAB solution supernatant from the centrifuge tube, taking care not to entrain any silica.

Poured into a titration beaker and 50mL demineralized water was added using a sample bottle. The analysis was performed using the following parameters:

-end point value: 250 mV;

-maximum rate: 10 mL/min;

-minimum rate: 5 μ L/min.

The volume of OT consumed was recorded as V1.

Water content of silicon dioxide

The moisture content (% H) of each silica sample was determined by the weight loss of the sample after being left in an oven at 105 ℃ for 2 hours2O). For this purpose, the bottles and caps are weighed on a precision balance, the weight m being recorded0(ii) a Then, 2g of a silica sample to be measured was accurately weighed quickly. After weighing the silicon dioxide, placing the bottle cap on the weighing bottle, and recording the weight m of the weighing bottle, the bottle cap and the sample assembly1. The cap was then removed and the vial containing the silica was placed in a natural draft oven set at 105 + -5 deg.C for 2 hours and the oven was preheated to the specified temperature.

The vial and sample assembly were removed from the oven, the cap was replaced on the vial, and the assembly was placed in a desiccator for cooling until it returned to ambient temperature. Weigh the assembly and record the weight m2

The moisture content (in weight percent) was then obtained according to the following formula:

Preparation of a sedimentation gradient

The centrifuge disk was set to spin at 24000rpm for 30 minutes. The sucrose solution density gradient was prepared as follows: an aqueous solution containing 24 wt% sucrose was prepared in a 50mL beaker. An aqueous solution containing 8 wt% sucrose was prepared in a second 50mL beaker. After the two solutions were homogenized separately, samples were taken from each solution using a 2ml syringe and injected into the rotating disk in the following order:

sample 1: 1.8mL of a 24% solution;

sample 2: 1.6mL of 24% solution +0.2mL of 8% solution;

sample 3: 1.4mL of 24% solution +0.4mL of 8% solution;

sample 4: 1.2mL of 24% solution +0.6mL of 8% solution;

sample 5: 1.0mL of 24% solution +0.8mL of 8% solution;

sample 6: 0.8mL of 24% solution +1.0mL of 8% solution;

sample 7: 0.6mL of 24% solution +1.2mL of 8% solution;

sample 8: 0.4mL of 24% solution +1.4mL of 8% solution;

sample 9: 0.2mL of 24% solution +1.6mL of 8% solution;

sample 10: 1.8mL of an 8% solution.

The 2 solutions were homogenized in the syringe by manually stirring a few seconds after aspiration of about 0.2mL of air before each injection into the disc to ensure that no liquid was lost.

The purpose of these injections, with a total volume of 18mL, is to create a density gradient that can be used to eliminate some instability that may occur during the injection of the sample to be tested. To prevent the gradient from evaporating, 1mL of dodecane was added to the rotating disk using a 2mL syringe. The discs were then spun at 24000rpm for 60 minutes (rpm — rpm) before any first measurement was taken.

Preparation of a silica sample to be analyzed

3.2g of silica were weighed into a 50mL tall glass beaker (SCHOTT DURAN: 38mm in diameter, 70mm tall) and 40mL of deionized water were added. The suspension was magnetically stirred with a 2cm magnetic stir bar at 300rpm for at least 20 seconds, then the magnetic stir bar was removed and the beaker placed in a crystallizer equipped with an ice bath. The ultrasonic probe was then immersed in a beaker with the end of the probe 1cm below the gas-liquid interface. It is recommended that the replaceable tip, which transmits the ultrasonic waves to the suspension, be ensured to be in an acceptable state of wear before the generator is activated. As known to those skilled in the art, an acceptable wear state is generally considered to be a surface state without any visually perceptible roughness. As a reference for unacceptable wear states, for example, the right drawing of fig. 3 on page 14 published in "Preparation of nanoparticles from powdered materials Using ultrasound dispersion, version 1.1[ j.s.taurozzi, v.a.hackley, m.r.wiesner ], national institute of standards and technology publication 1200-2, month 6 2012" (code NSPUE, available Using the numerical identifier dx.doi.org/10.6028/nist.sp.1200-2) can be used. The generator of the probe was set to 60% of its maximum power and the silica suspension was subjected to ultrasound for 8 minutes. At the end of the sonication, the suspension is again magnetically stirred. Samples were taken with stirring.

Analysis of V.multidot.

Before each injection of the sample to be tested, 100 μ l of a suspension containing standard PVC particles supplied by CPS Instruments, the characteristics of which have been pre-recorded in the software, are injected into the disc. It is recommended to start the measurement in the software at the same time as this first injection and wait for the equipment to confirm before being able to inject 100 μ Ι of previously sonicated silica suspension, again ensuring that the measurement is started at the same time as the injection. These injections were performed by a 1mL syringe.

At the end of the measurement, the software provides the relative weight ratios of each type of diameter measured after the time required to deposit all the smallest diameter particles (configured in the software to be 0.02 μm) is reached. This curve obtained in this way is called the agglomerate particle size distribution.

The integral of the agglomerate particle size distribution with diameter enables a so-called "cumulative" distribution to be obtained; that is, the total weight of agglomerates between the measured minimum diameter and the diameter of interest.

Root of Chinese thorowax

The values of d50, d16, d84, and Ld are derived from the cumulative distribution and are calculated based on the linear scale as follows:

d50 is the diameter for which 50% by weight of the total number of agglomerates is smaller than the diameter and 50% by weight is larger than the diameter. d50 is referred to as the median diameter of the silica agglomerates. It is expressed in nm.

D84 is the diameter at which 84% by weight of the total number of agglomerates is smaller than this diameter. It is expressed in nm.

D16 is the diameter at which 16% by weight of the total number of agglomerates is smaller than this diameter. It is expressed in nm.

-Ld: indicating the width of the agglomerate particle size distribution. It is calculated according to the equation Ld ═ (d84-d16)/d 50. And Ld is a dimensionless number.

Characterization of the rubber composition

The rubber compositions were characterized after curing as shown below.

Dynamic properties

The dynamic properties tan (. delta.) were measured on a viscosity analyzer (Metravib VA4000) according to the standard ASTM D5992-96.

Measured at a temperature of 23 ℃:

according to the standard ASTM D5992-96, a sample of a crosslinked composition (thickness 4mm, cross-sectional area 400 mm) subjected to a simple alternating sinusoidal shear stress at a frequency of 10Hz at 23 ℃ is recorded2Cylindrical sample of (d). Peak-to-peak strain amplitude scans were performed from 0.1% to 100% (outward cycle), then from 100% to 0.1% (return cycle). The result used is the loss factor (tan (δ)). For the return cycle, the maximum value of tan (δ) observed (tan (δ) max at 23 ℃) is indicated.

The results are expressed as base 100, and the control is assigned an arbitrary value of 100 in order to calculate and compare the tan (. delta.) at 23 ℃ for the different samples testedmax. Calculating the value of the sample to be tested on the basis of 100 according to the following operations: (tan (delta) max value of sample to be tested at 23 deg.C/tan (delta) max value of control at 23 deg.C) × 100. In this way, a result of less than 100 indicates a decrease in hysteresis (and thus an improvement in hysteresis performance), which corresponds to an improvement in rolling resistance performance.

Abrasion resistance

The abrasion resistance was measured according to standard NF ISO 4649, month 11 2010, which included determining the volume loss of the sample after a linear displacement of 40 meters on a standard sandpaper.

More specifically, the volumetric loss of wear was determined using a wear tester according to the instructions of standard NF ISO 4649 (method B) on month 11 2010, in which a cylindrical test piece was subjected to a lapping action of P60 microparticles attached to the surface of the rotating drum at a contact pressure of 5N (N ═ newton) for a course of 40 m. The weight loss of the sample was measured, and the volume loss was calculated from the density (. rho.) of the material constituting the test piece. The density (ρ) of the material constituting the specimen is generally obtained based on the weight fraction of each component of the material and its respective density (ρ).

The results are expressed as a base 100 and arbitrary values for the control are assigned 100 in order to calculate and compare the loss of material volume for the different samples tested. Calculating the value of the sample to be tested on the basis of 100 according to the following operations: (material volume loss value of sample to be tested/material volume loss value of control) × 100. In this way, results of less than 100 indicate a reduction in volume loss and therefore an improvement in wear resistance, which corresponds to an improvement in wear resistance performance. Conversely, results greater than 100 indicate an increase in volume loss and therefore a decrease in wear resistance, which corresponds to a decrease in wear resistance performance.

Characterization of other Components of the composition

Glass transition temperature Tg

The glass transition temperature Tg is measured by DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) in a known manner according to the standard ASTM D3418 (1999).

Microstructure of the polymer

The weight content of styrene in the elastomer and its microstructure (relative distribution of 1, 2-vinyl-, trans-1, 4-and cis-1, 4-butadiene units) were determined quantitatively using near infrared spectroscopy (NIR). The principle of this method is based on the Beer-Lambert law generalized to multicomponent systems. Since the method is indirect, it involves the use of a solution having a composition of matter13Multivariate calibration of standard elastomers of C NMR-determined composition [ Vilmin, F., Dussap, C., and Coste, N., applied Spectroscopy,2006,60,619-29]. Styrene content and microstructure were then calculated from NIR spectra of elastomeric films having a thickness of about 730 μm. Bruker Tensor 37 Fourier transform near-infrared spectrometer at 2cm using an InGaAs detector fitted with cooling by Peltier effect-1Resolution of (2) is 4000 and 6200cm-1And the transmission mode is adopted to collect the spectrum.

I.2 embodiments of the invention

The rubber composition according to the invention, particularly for the manufacture of tyres or semi-finished products for tyres, is based on at least one elastomer, a reinforcing inorganic filler, an agent for coupling the elastomer to the reinforcing inorganic filler and a crosslinking system; the reinforcing inorganic filler comprises at least one silica S having:

-at an extension from 40 to 300m2CTAB specific surface area S in the range of/gCTAB

BET specific surface area SBETAnd CTAB specific surface area SCTABGreater than or equal to 35m2A difference of/g;

wherein:

[d50] is the value of d50 in nm;

[SCTAB]is given by m2S is/gCTABThe value of (d);

[WAl]is W in weight% relative to the weight of the silica SAlThe value of (d); and is

The amount A satisfies the relation (II):

A≥253 (II)。

the expression "composition based on" is understood to mean that the composition comprises a mixture and/or a reaction product of the various components used, some of these essential components being able (or intended) to react at least partially with one another during the various manufacturing stages of the composition, in particular during crosslinking or vulcanization.

For the purposes of the present invention, "silica agglomerates" are intended to mean, in a known manner, the collection of indivisible primary particles (i.e. particles which cannot be cut, divided, split) produced during the synthesis of silica. Silica agglomerates represent the smallest unit dispersible in the mixture.

In the present specification, all percentages (%) shown are percentages by weight, unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Furthermore, any numerical range denoted by the expression "between a and b" means a numerical range extending from more than "a" to less than "b" (i.e. excluding the limits a and b), while any numerical range denoted by the expression "from a to b" means a numerical range extending from "a" up to "b" (i.e. including the strict limits a and b).

The abbreviation "phr" (per hundred rubber) refers to the parts by weight of elastomer (or sum of elastomers if multiple elastomers are present) or rubber present in a rubber composition per hundred parts by weight.

For the remainder of this application, the terms "silica" and "precipitated silica" are synonymous.

For the avoidance of ambiguity, the symbol "x" used in equations, especially equation (I), represents a multiplier. Therefore, the expression "a × b" means "a" multiplied by "b".

Within the scope of the present invention, the carbon-based products mentioned in the description may be of fossil or bio-based origin. In the case of bio-based sources, they may be partially or completely derived from biomass or obtained by renewable raw materials derived from biomass. In particular, to polymers, plasticizers, fillers, and the like.

□ elastic body

The rubber composition according to the invention comprises at least one elastomer, that is to say one elastomer or a mixture of several elastomers. Elastomers are polymers well known to those skilled in the art.

Preferably, the elastomer is a diene elastomer.

More preferably, the elastomer is a synthetic diene elastomer.

It is to be noted here that an elastomer (or "rubber", these two terms being considered as synonymous) of the "diene" type should be understood in a known manner as meaning an elastomer(s) at least partially (i.e. a homopolymer or a copolymer) derived from diene monomers (i.e. monomers bearing two conjugated or non-conjugated carbon-carbon double bonds).

Diene elastomers can be divided into two categories, "essentially unsaturated" or "essentially saturated" which is generally intended to mean diene elastomers resulting at least in part from conjugated diene monomers and having a molar content of units of diene origin (conjugated dienes) which is greater than 15% (mol%), and thus diene elastomers such as butyl rubbers or EPDM-type copolymers of dienes and α -olefins are not within the preceding definition but can be described in particular as "essentially saturated" diene elastomers (low or very low molar content of units of diene origin, always less than 15% (mol%)).

In view of these definitions, "diene elastomer capable of being used in the rubber composition according to the invention" is intended to mean more particularly:

(a) any homopolymer obtained by polymerization of a conjugated diene monomer having from 4 to 12 carbon atoms;

(b) any copolymer obtained by copolymerizing one or more conjugated dienes with each other or with one or more vinyl aromatic compounds having 8 to 20 carbon atoms;

(c) terpolymers obtained by copolymerization of ethylene and α -olefins having from 3 to 6 carbon atoms with non-conjugated diene monomers having from 6 to 12 carbon atoms, for example, elastomers obtained from ethylene and propylene with non-conjugated diene monomers of the type described above (such as, in particular, 1, 4-hexadiene, ethylidene norbornene or dicyclopentadiene);

(d) copolymers of isobutylene and isoprene (butyl rubber) and halogenated versions (in particular chlorinated or brominated versions) of such copolymers.

Although the present invention is applicable to any type of elastomer, in particular diene elastomers, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the present invention preferably uses essentially unsaturated diene elastomers, in particular diene elastomers of the type (a) or (b) described above.

In the case of the copolymer (b), the copolymer (b) may comprise 20 to 99% by weight of diene units and 1 to 80% by weight of vinyl aromatic units.

The following are particularly suitable as conjugated dienes: 1, 3-butadiene, 2-methyl-1, 3-butadiene, 2, 3-di (C)1-C5Alkyl) -1, 3-butadiene (e.g., 2, 3-dimethyl-1, 3-butadiene, 2, 3-diethyl-1, 3-butadiene, 2-methyl-3-ethyl-1, 3-butadiene, 2-methyl-3-isopropyl-1, 3-butadiene), aryl-1, 3-butadiene, 1, 3-pentadiene, or 2, 4-hexadiene.

For example, the following are suitable as vinyl aromatic compounds: styrene, o-, m-or p-methylstyrene, "vinyltoluene" commercial mixtures, p- (tert-butyl) styrene, methoxystyrene, chlorostyrene, vinylmesitylene, divinylbenzene or vinylnaphthalene.

Preferably, the diene elastomer of the composition according to the invention may preferably be chosen from diene elastomers consisting of polybutadiene (abbreviated to BR), synthetic polyisoprene (abbreviated to IR), natural rubber (abbreviated to NR), butadiene copolymers, isoprene copolymers and mixtures of these elastomers. Such copolymers are more preferably selected from butadiene/styrene copolymers (abbreviated SBR), whether prepared by emulsion polymerization (ESBR) or solution polymerization (SSBR), isoprene/butadiene copolymers (abbreviated BIR), isoprene/styrene copolymers (abbreviated SIR) and isoprene/butadiene/styrene copolymers (abbreviated SBIR). Preferably, the diene elastomer is chosen from the group consisting of polybutadienes (BR), butadiene/styrene copolymers (SBR), isoprene/butadiene copolymers (BIR), isoprene/styrene copolymers (SIR), isoprene/butadiene/styrene copolymers (SBIR) and mixtures of these copolymers.

Among the diene elastomers, the following are suitable: polybutadiene (in particular polybutadiene having a content of 1, 2-units (mol%) of between 4% and 80%, or polybutadiene having a content of cis-1, 4-units (mol%) of more than 80%), polyisoprene, butadiene/styrene copolymers (in particular butadiene/styrene copolymers having a Tg (glass transition temperature Tg measured according to ASTM D3418 of 1999) of between 0 ℃ and-70 ℃ and more particularly between-10 ℃ and-60 ℃, a styrene content of between 5% and 60% by weight and more particularly between 20% and 50% by weight, a content of 1, 2-bonds of the butadiene moiety (mol%) of between 4% and 75%, a content of trans-1, 4-bonds (mol%) of between 10% and 80%), butadiene/isoprene copolymers (in particular butadiene/styrene copolymers having an isoprene content of between 5% and 90% by weight and a Tg in the range of Tg) Butadiene/isoprene copolymer at-40 ℃ to-80 ℃) or isoprene/styrene copolymer (in particular isoprene/styrene copolymer having a styrene content of between 5% and 50% by weight and a Tg of between-5 ℃ and-50 ℃). In the case of butadiene/styrene/isoprene copolymers, particularly suitable are those having a styrene content of between 5% and 50% by weight and more particularly between 10% and 40%, an isoprene content of between 15% and 60% by weight and more particularly between 20% and 50%, a butadiene content of between 5% and 50% by weight and more particularly between 20% and 40%, a1, 2-unit content (mol%) of the butadiene moiety of between 4% and 85%, a trans-1, 4-unit content (mol%) of the butadiene moiety of between 6% and 80%, a content (mol%) of 1, 2-plus 3, 4-units of the isoprene moiety of between 5% and 70%, a trans-1, 4-unit content (mol%) of the isoprene moiety of between 10% and 50%, more typically any butadiene/styrene/isoprene copolymer having a Tg between-5 ℃ and-70 ℃.

According to a particular embodiment, the diene elastomer is predominantly (i.e. more than 50phr) SBR, whether it is an SBR prepared in emulsion ("ESBR") or an SBR prepared in solution ("SSBR"), or an SBR/BR, SBR/NR (or SBR/IR), BR/NR (or BR/IR) or SBR/BR/NR (or SBR/BR/IR) blend (mixture). In the case of SBR (ESBR or SSBR) elastomers, SBR having a medium styrene content (for example between 20% and 35% by weight) or a high styrene content (for example between 35% and 45% by weight), a content of vinyl bonds of the butadiene fraction (mol%) between 15% and 70%, a content of trans-1, 4-bonds (mol%) between 15% and 75%, a Tg between-10 ℃ and-55 ℃; such SBR may advantageously be used in admixture with BR which preferably has more than 90% (mol%) cis-1, 4 bonds.

According to another particular embodiment of the invention, the diene elastomer of the composition according to the invention comprises a blend (mixture) of BR (as low Tg elastomer) having a cis-1, 4-linkage content (mol%) greater than 90% with one or more S-SBR or E-SBR (as high Tg elastomer).

The elastomer may have any microstructure depending on the polymerization conditions used, in particular the presence or absence of the modifying and/or randomizing agent and the amount of modifying and/or randomizing agent used. These elastomers may be, for example, block, random, sequential or microsequential elastomers, and are prepared in dispersion or in solution; they may be coupled and/or star-branched or functionalized with coupling agents and/or star branching or functionalizing agents.

Preferably, the elastomer is a functionalized diene elastomer.

Preferably, the functionalized diene elastomer is a functionalized butadiene/styrene copolymer.

"functionalized diene elastomer" is intended to mean a synthetic diene elastomer comprising at least one chemical group comprising one or more heteroatoms, such as, for example, a sulfur atom S, a nitrogen atom N, an oxygen atom O, a silicon atom Si or a tin atom Sn. Within the scope of the present description, this chemical group is also referred to as "functional group". These two terms are used indifferently.

The chemical group may be located at the chain end, that is, at one end of the linear elastomer backbone. The diene elastomer can then be said to be functionalized "at the chain end". It is generally an elastomer obtained by reaction of a living elastomer with a functionalizing agent (that is to say any at least monofunctional molecule whose functional group is any type of chemical group known to the person skilled in the art to react with the living chain end).

The chemical group may be located in the linear elastomer backbone. The diene elastomer can then be said to be coupled or functionalized "in the middle of the chain" (other than "at the end of the chain") (although the group is not located exactly in the middle of the elastomer chain). It is generally an elastomer obtained by reaction of both chains of a living elastomer with a coupling agent, that is to say any at least bifunctional molecule whose functional group is any type of chemical group known to the person skilled in the art to react with the living chain end.

This group may be centered, with n elastomer chains (n >2) bonded thereto, forming the star-branched structure of the elastomer. The diene elastomer can then be said to be star-branched. It is generally an elastomer obtained by reaction of the n chains of a living elastomer with a star branching agent, that is to say any polyfunctional molecule whose functional groups are any type of chemical groups known to the person skilled in the art to react with the living chain ends.

The person skilled in the art will understand that the functionalization reaction with a reagent comprising more than one functional group reactive towards the living elastomer results in a mixture of entities functionalized at the chain ends and in the middle of the chain (constituting the linear chains of the functionalized diene elastomer) and star-branched entities (if present). Depending on the operating conditions (mainly the molar ratio of functionalizing agent to active chain), certain entities are predominant in the mixture.

Preferably, the functionalized diene elastomer comprises at least one polar functional group comprising at least one oxygen atom.

Preferably, the polar functional group may be selected from the group consisting of silanol, alkoxysilane with amine groups, epoxide, ether, ester, carboxylic acid and hydroxyl. The polar functional groups improve in particular the interaction between the reinforcing inorganic filler and the elastomer. Such functionalized elastomers are known per se and are described in particular in the following documents: FR2740778, US6013718, WO2008/141702, FR2765882, WO01/92402, WO2004/09686, EP1127909, US6503973, WO2009/000750 and WO 2009/000752.

The functionalized diene elastomer is preferably a diene elastomer comprising a silanol as polar functional group.

Preferably, the silanol is located at the chain end or in the middle of the functionalized diene elastomer backbone. More preferably, the silanol is located at the end of the functionalized diene elastomer backbone.

Preferably, the functionalized diene elastomer is a diene elastomer with a silanol function at the chain end (in particular SBR). The functionalized diene elastomer comprises at one end of its main chain a silanol function or a terminal silanol group of formula- (SiR)1R2-O-) mH, wherein m represents an integer having a value of 3 to 8 (preferably 3), R1And R2(same or different) represents an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, preferably an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms.

Elastomers of this type can be obtained according to the process described in document EP0778311, more particularly according to a process in which the living elastomer is functionalized, after the anionic polymerization step, with a functionalizing agent of the cyclic polysiloxane type, provided that the reaction medium does not polymerize the cyclic polysiloxane. As cyclic polysiloxanes, mention may be made of cyclic polysiloxanes corresponding to formula (V):

wherein m represents an integer having a value of 3 to 8, preferably 3, R1And R2(same or different) represents an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, preferably an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms. Among these compounds, mention may be made of hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane.

More preferably, the functionalized diene elastomer is of formula- (SiR) comprising a silanol function at one end of its main chain or having a silanol end1R2Diene elastomers (in particular SBR) with polysiloxane groups of the formula-O-. mH, in which m represents an integer having a value equal to 3 (preferably 3), R1And R2(same or different) represents an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms。

Preferably, the functionalized diene elastomer (in particular SBR) comprises a polar functional group which is an alkoxysilane with or without another functional group (or with another chemical group, these expressions being synonymous).

Such elastomers are obtained mainly by functionalization of the living elastomer resulting from anionic polymerization. It should be noted that, as known to the person skilled in the art, when modifying an elastomer by reaction of a functionalizing agent with a living elastomer resulting from an anionic polymerization step, a mixture of modified entities of this elastomer is obtained, the composition of which depends on the modification reaction conditions and in particular on the ratio of the reactive sites of the functionalizing agent with respect to the number of living elastomer chains. For a given SCTABHas a high agglomerate median diameter d50 as measured by centrifugal sedimentation. It is known that the size of silica agglomerates is inversely proportional to the surface area of the silica: specific surface area (especially S)CTAB) As one increases, the size of the agglomerates decreases.

In particular, it has been observed that for a given specific surface area SCTABValue and given aluminum content WAlThe median diameter d50 of the agglomerates measured by centrifugal sedimentation of the silica used in the rubber composition according to the invention is significantly higher than the median diameter of the agglomerates of the prior art silica comprising aluminum. This requirement is represented by the quantity a satisfying the following relation (II): a is more than or equal to 253 (II); a is an unitless number and is defined by formula (I):

[SCTAB]is given by m2S is/gCTABThe value of (d);

[WAl]is W in weight% relative to the weight of the silica SAlThe numerical value of (c).

In equation (I), [ d50] is unitless. For example, if the measured value of d50 as measured by centrifugal sedimentation is 16nm, the value of d50 is 16, and thus [ d50] is 16.

In equation (I), [ SCTAB]Is unitless. For example, if SCTABMeasured value of (2) is 200m2G, then SCTABHas a value of 200, thus [ S ]CTAB]=200。

these silicas S are preferably obtained or can be obtained by the process for preparing precipitated silicas described below (including all preferred modes and variants of the process). The silica S is precipitated silica.

The process for preparing precipitated silica S comprises the steps of:

(i) providing an initial solution having a pH ranging from 2.00 to 5.00;

(ii) simultaneously adding silicate and acid to the initial solution such that the pH of the reaction medium is maintained in a range extending from 2.00 to 5.00;

(iii) stopping the addition of the acid and continuing the addition of silicate to the reaction medium until a pH value of said reaction medium is obtained which is in the range extending from 7.00 to 10.00;

(iv) simultaneously adding to the reaction medium at least one aluminium compound, a silicate and an acid such that the pH of the reaction medium is maintained in a range extending from 7.00 to 10.00;

(v) the addition of silicate and of the at least one aluminium compound is stopped and the addition of acid to the reaction medium is continued until a pH value of the reaction medium of less than 6.0 is obtained and a suspension of precipitated silica S is obtained.

In the present description, the term "silicate" is used to indicate one or more silicates that may be added during the process. The silicate may be selected from alkali metal silicates.

Preferably, the silicate is selected from sodium silicate and potassium silicate. The silicate may be in any known form, for example a metasilicate or disilicate.

In the case of sodium silicate, SiO of sodium silicate2/Na2The O weight ratio is generally in the range extending from 2.0 to 4.0, in particular from 2.4 to 3.9, for example from 3.1 to 3.8.

Concentration of silicon dioxide (in relation to SiO)2Expressed as a wt.%) may range from 3.9 to 25.0 wt.%, for example 5.6 to 23.0 wt.%, particularly 5.6 to 20.7 wt.%.

In the present specification, the term "acid" is used to indicate one or more acids that may be added during the process. The process may be carried out with any type of acid known to those skilled in the art. As the acid, an inorganic acid (e.g., sulfuric acid, nitric acid, or hydrochloric acid) or an organic acid (e.g., acetic acid, formic acid, or carbonic acid) is generally used. Preferably, the acid is selected from sulfuric acid, nitric acid or hydrochloric acid; more preferably, the acid is sulfuric acid.

The acid added precisely to the reaction medium can be in diluted form or in concentrated form. The same acid may be used in the same or different concentrations in different steps of the process. Preferably, the acid is sulfuric acid.

In a preferred embodiment of the process, for all steps of the process, the acid is sulfuric acid and the silicate is sodium silicate. Preferably, the same concentration (to SiO) is used in all steps of the process2Expressed as% by weight) of the same sodium silicate.

In step (i) of the process, an initial solution having a pH in the range extending from 2.00 to 5.00 is provided and added to the reactor. The initial solution is an aqueous solution. The term "water" means that the solvent is water.

Preferably, the pH of the initial solution is in the range extending from 2.50 to 5.00, in particular 3.00 to 4.50; for example, 3.50 to 4.50.

The initial solution may be obtained by adding an acid to water to obtain an initial aqueous solution having a pH value in the range extending from 2.50 to 5.00, in particular from 3.00 to 4.50; for example, 3.50 to 4.50.

Alternatively, the initial solution may comprise silicate. Thus, the initial solution may also be obtained by adding an acid to a mixture of water and silicate to obtain a pH in the range extending from 2.00 to 5.00, in particular 3.00 to 4.50; for example, 3.50 to 4.50.

The initial solution can also be prepared by adding an acid to a solution comprising silica particles previously formed at a pH of less than 7.00, in order to obtain a pH value in the range extending from 2.00 to 5.00, preferably from 2.50 to 5.00, in particular from 3.00 to 4.50, for example from 3.50 to 4.50.

The initial solution of step (i) may or may not include an electrolyte. Preferably, the initial aqueous solution of step (i) comprises an aluminium-free electrolyte.

The term "electrolyte" is understood herein in its generally accepted meaning, that is, it refers to any ionic or molecular species that decomposes or dissociates when in solution to form ions or charged particles. The term "electrolyte" is used in this specification to denote one or more electrolytes that may be present. As the electrolyte used in the initial aqueous solution, salts selected from alkali metal salts and alkaline earth metal salts may be mentioned. Preferably, the electrolyte used in the initial aqueous solution is the initial silicate and metal salt of the acid used in the process. Notable examples of such salts are in particular sodium chloride (in the case of sodium silicate reacted with hydrochloric acid) or sodium sulphate (in the case of sodium silicate reacted with sulphuric acid). Preferably, the electrolyte is sodium sulfate.

Preferably, when sodium sulphate is used as the electrolyte in step (i), its concentration in the initial aqueous solution is in the range extending from 8 to 40g/L, in particular 10 to 35g/L, for example 13 to 30 g/L.

Step (ii) of the process comprises adding the acid and silicate simultaneously to the initial solution. The amounts of acid and silicate added in step (ii) are adjusted so that the pH of the reaction medium is maintained in a range extending from 2.00 to 5.00, more preferably in a range extending from 2.50 to 5.00, especially in a range extending from 3.00 to 5.00, for example in a range extending from 3.20 to 4.80.

This simultaneous addition in step (ii) is advantageously carried out so that the pH value of the reaction medium is constantly equal to the pH. + -. 0.20pH units reached at the end of step (i).

Preferably, step (ii) comprises adding both the acid and the silicate to the initial solution, as described in detail below.

In one embodiment of the process, an intermediate step (ii') may be carried out between step (i) and step (ii), wherein silicate and acid are added to the initial solution so that the pH of the reaction medium is maintained in a range extending from 2.00 to 9.50. The addition of silicate and acid may be carried out simultaneously for all or part of step (ii'). Step (ii') generally lasts from 1 to 10 minutes, preferably from 2 to 8 minutes, before step (ii) is started.

Then, in step (iii), the addition of acid is stopped and the addition of silicate to the reaction medium is continued. The addition of acid is stopped when the pH of the reaction medium is in the range extending from 7.00 to 10.00, preferably from 7.50 to 9.50.

At the end of step (iii), that is to say after stopping the addition of silicate, the step of maturing the reaction medium can advantageously be carried out. Preferably, the step of maturing the reaction medium is carried out at the pH obtained at the end of step (iii). The maturation step may be carried out with stirring of the reaction medium. The maturing step is preferably carried out for 2 to 45 minutes, in particular for 5 to 25 minutes, with stirring of the reaction medium. Preferably, the aging step does not include the addition of any acid or silicate.

After step (iii) and the optional ripening step, at least one aluminium compound, an acid and a silicate are added simultaneously, so that the pH of the reaction medium is maintained in a range extending from 7.00 to 10.00, preferably from 7.50 to 9.50.

The simultaneous addition of the at least one aluminium compound, the acid and the silicate (step (iv)) is preferably carried out so that the pH of the reaction medium is always equal to pH ± 0.20pH units reached at the end of the preceding step (iii)).

It should be noted that the method may include an addition step. For example, between step (iii) and step (iv) on the one hand, and between the optional maturation step following step (iii) and step (iv) on the other hand, an acid may be added to the reaction medium. After the addition of the acid, the pH of the reaction medium must be maintained in a range extending from 7.00 to 9.50, preferably from 7.50 to 9.50.

In step (v), the addition of silicate and of the at least one aluminium compound is stopped and the addition of acid to the reaction medium is continued in order to obtain a pH value of the reaction medium of less than 6.00, preferably in the range extending from 3.00 to 5.50, in particular from 3.00 to 5.00. A suspension of precipitated silica is obtained in the reactor.

At the end of step (v) and after stopping the addition of the acid to the reaction medium, a maturing step may advantageously be carried out. Preferably, the step of maturing the reaction medium is carried out at the pH obtained at the end of step (iv). The maturation step may be carried out with stirring of the reaction medium. The maturing step is preferably carried out for 2 to 45 minutes, in particular for 5 to 25 minutes, with stirring of the reaction medium. Preferably, the aging step does not include the addition of any acid or silicate.

During step (iv) (i.e. during the simultaneous addition of acid and silicate to the reaction medium at a pH in the range extending from 7.00 to 10.00), at least one aluminium compound is added accurately to the reaction medium. (iii) adding exactly the at least one aluminium compound to the reaction medium for the total duration of step (iv) (i.e. the same time as adding the acid and silicate). As a variant, the at least one aluminum compound may be added exactly only during a part of step (iv), for example only after the first simultaneous addition of acid and silicate.

The expression "at least one aluminium compound" is used to indicate one or more aluminium compounds which may be added during the process.

Any known aluminum compound can be used in the process, provided that it is water soluble. Non-limiting, notable examples of suitable aluminum compounds can be aluminum chloride, aluminum sulfate, aluminum nitrite, or alkali metal aluminate. Preferably, the aluminium compound is selected from alkali metal aluminates. Preferably, the aluminium compound is selected from potassium aluminate and sodium aluminate. Still more preferably, the aluminum compound is sodium aluminate.

Suitable stirring means and heating means are generally provided in the reactor in which the entire reaction of silicate with acid is carried out.

All reactions of the silicate with the acid (steps (i) to (v)) are generally carried out at temperatures ranging from 40 to 97 ℃, in particular from 60 to 95 ℃, preferably from 80 to 95 ℃, more preferably from 85 to 95 ℃.

According to a variant of the invention, all reactions of silicate with acid are carried out at a constant temperature, preferably in the range extending from 40 to 97 ℃, in particular from 80 to 95 ℃, more preferably from 85 to 95 ℃.

According to another variant of the invention, the end-of-reaction temperature is higher than the start-of-reaction temperature: the temperature at the start of the reaction (e.g. during steps (i) to (iii)) is therefore preferably maintained in a range extending from 40 to 85 ℃, and then the temperature is preferably raised to a value in a range extending from 80 to 95 ℃, preferably 85 to 95 ℃, and this value is maintained (e.g. during steps (iv) and (v)) until the end of the reaction.

It has been found that the succession of these specific steps, in particular the first simultaneous addition of acid and silicate at a pH in the range extending from 2.00 to 5.00 and the simultaneous addition of aluminium compound, acid and silicate at a pH in the range extending from 7.00 to 10.00, constitutes an important condition for obtaining precipitated silica having said characteristics, in particular a high agglomerate particle size distribution and an agglomerate median diameter d 50. The different parameters of the process (for example temperature, pH of the reaction medium, amount of electrolyte and amount of aluminium compound in step (i)) can be modified so as to obtain a CTAB specific surface area S having the desired valueCTABValue, BET specific surface area SBETValue and aluminum content WAlPrecipitated silica of value.

At the end of the step just described, a silica slurry is obtained, which is then separated (liquid-solid separation). Preferably, the method of preparing silica further comprises the step (vi) of filtering the suspension and drying the precipitated silica.

The separation carried out in the preparation process generally comprises filtration and subsequent washing, if desired. The filtration is carried out according to any known method, for example by means of a filter press, belt filter, vacuum filter or rotary filter, preferably by means of a filter press. At the end of this step, a filter cake was obtained.

The filter cake is then subjected to a crushing operation. The term "comminution" is in this case intended to mean the process of converting a solid (i.e. a filter cake) into a fluid. After the comminution step (also called fluidization or liquefaction operation), the filter cake is in a flowable form of the fluid type and the precipitated silica is again in suspension.

In one variant, the comminution step may comprise a mechanical treatment which results in a reduction of the particle size of the silica in the suspension. The mechanical treatment may be carried out by passing the filter cake through a high shear mixer, such as a colloid mill or a ball mill. In another variant, the comminuting step may comprise a chemical treatment. The filter cake is chemically acted upon by adding, for example, an acid or an aluminum compound that is different from or the same as that used in step (iv) of the process. The aluminium compound used in the comminution step is preferably the same as the aluminium compound used in step (iv) of the process, for example sodium or potassium aluminate, even more preferably sodium aluminate. In another variant, the crushing step may comprise mechanical and chemical treatments.

When the aluminum compound is added to the filter cake during the comminution operation, it is generally present in an amount such that the aluminum compound is in contact with the silica (as SiO) present in the filter cake2Expressed) in a weight ratio in a range extending from 0.10% to 0.75%, preferably from 0.10% to 0.50% by weight, more preferably from 0.20% to 0.45% by weight.

Regardless of the stage of addition of the aluminium compound, the cumulative amount of said aluminium compound added accurately to the reaction medium and in the chemical comminution step is such that the aluminium content in the precipitated silica S ranges from 0.5 to 7.0% by weight, preferably from 0.8 to 3.5% by weight, relative to the weight of silica, and even from 1.0 to 3.0% by weight, relative to the weight of silica. The content of the aluminium compound added in the chemical comminution step can be adjusted so as to obtain the desired aluminium content in the precipitated silica S by methods known to the person skilled in the art.

Preferably, the suspension of precipitated silica S obtained after the comminution step is subsequently dried.

The drying may be carried out by any method known per se.

Preferably, drying is carried out by atomization. Any type of atomizer suitable for this purpose may be used, in particular a rotary atomizer, a nozzle atomizer, a hydraulic atomizer or a two-fluid atomizer. In general, when filtration is performed using a filter press, a nozzle atomizer is used, and when filtration is performed using a vacuum filter, a rotary atomizer is used.

When drying is carried out using a nozzle atomizer, the silica S that can be obtained is generally in the form of substantially spherical beads. At the end of this type of drying, a step of grinding or micronization of the recovered product may be carried out. The silica S that can be obtained is generally in the form of a powder.

When drying is performed using a rotary atomizer, the silica S that can be obtained may be in the form of a powder.

Finally, the dried (in particular by means of a rotary atomizer) or milled or micronized product as described above may optionally be subjected to an agglomeration step, which comprises, for example, direct tabletting, wet granulation (i.e. using a binder, such as water, silica suspension, etc.), extrusion or, preferably, dry tabletting. The silica S obtainable by this agglomeration step is generally in the form of particles.

Preferably, in the rubber composition according to the invention, the silica S may optionally be combined with at least one further silica. In other words, the reinforcing inorganic filler also comprises an additional silica different from silica S.

In this case, the content of each silica may be in the range extending from 1% to 99% by weight, relative to the total weight of the reinforcing inorganic filler. Preferably, the silica S advantageously represents at least 50% by weight of the total weight of the reinforcing inorganic filler, more preferably at least 80% by weight of the total weight of the reinforcing inorganic filler. The total weight of the reinforcing inorganic filler corresponds to the sum of the weight of silica S and the weight of the additional silica.

"additional silica" is intended to mean any other silica than silica S, that is to say a silica having different characteristics from silica S, in particular having an amount a which does not satisfy the relation (II). As further silica, mention may be made of precipitated silica or fumed silica, different from silica S. Silicas known as highly dispersible silicas ("HDS") can be used in particular, for example Ultrasil 7000GR silica from Evonik, Solvay1165MP and

Figure BDA0002336089980000312

1115MP silica, from Solvay

Figure BDA0002336089980000313

Premium200MP silica, Hi-Sil EZ150G silica from PPG, Zeopol 8715, 8745 or 8755 silica from Huber, or the silicas described in applications WO03/016215 and WO 03/016387.

In another embodiment, the reinforcing inorganic filler may be a mixture of silica S and another reinforcing inorganic filler selected from reinforcing alumina, aluminum hydroxide, aluminum silicate, titanium oxide, silicon nitride or silicon carbide. Such reinforcing inorganic fillers are, for example, those described in applications WO99/28376, WO00/73372, WO02/053634, WO2004/003067, WO 2004/056915.

As alumina, use is made in particular of a reinforced and highly dispersible alumina, said oxidation beingBET surface area of aluminum of 30 to 400m2In g, more preferably in the range from 60 to 250m2Between/g and an average agglomerate size at most equal to 500nm, more preferably at most equal to 200 nm. As non-limiting examples of such reinforcing aluminas, mention may be made in particular of the Baikalox A125 or CR125 aluminas

APA-100RDX alumina (Condea), alumoxane C alumina (Degussa) or AKP-G015 alumina (Sumitomo Chemicals) and the aluminas described in application EP 0810258.

As an equivalent of the additional reinforcing inorganic filler, the skilled person will understand that it is possible in particular to use reinforcing fillers of the organic type, in particular carbon black described below, at least partially covered with an inorganic layer, in particular a silica layer. Such carbon blacks are described, for example, in document WO 2013/190063.

Preferably, the silica S represents 100% by weight of the total weight of the reinforcing inorganic filler.

The amount of reinforcing inorganic filler in the rubber composition of the present invention depends on the use of the composition. In fact, for example, it is known that the desired level of reinforcement of bicycle tires is significantly lower than that required for tires capable of running at high speeds in a sustained manner, such as motorcycle tires, passenger vehicle tires or tires for utility vehicles (e.g., heavy vehicles). It is known to the person skilled in the art how to adjust the amount of reinforcing inorganic filler depending on the use of the composition of the invention.

Preferably, the amount of reinforcing inorganic filler in the composition may preferably range from 10 to 200phr, still more preferably from 30 to 150 phr.

□ agent for coupling elastomers to reinforcing inorganic fillers

The rubber composition according to the invention comprises at least one agent for coupling the elastomer to the reinforcing inorganic filler.

For coupling the reinforcing inorganic filler to the diene elastomer, use is made, in a known manner, of an at least bifunctional coupling agent (or bonding agent) intended to provide a satisfactory chemical and/or physical property of the link between the inorganic filler (the surface of its agglomerates) and the diene elastomer. Coupling agents have, for example, the simplified general formula "Y-T-X", wherein:

y represents a functional group ("Y" functional group) capable of bonding physically and/or chemically to the inorganic filler, it being possible, for example, to establish such a bond between a silicon atom of the coupling agent and a surface hydroxyl (OH) group of the inorganic filler;

-X represents a functional group ("X" functional group) capable of bonding physically and/or chemically to the elastomer, for example via a sulfur atom;

-T represents a group capable of linking Y and X.

The connection can be established, for example, by covalent, hydrogen, ionic and/or electrostatic bonds between the Y functional group and the reinforcing inorganic filler and between the Z functional group and the elastomer.

The coupling agent should in particular not be confused with a simple agent covering the filler in question, which may comprise, in a known manner, a Y function which is active with respect to the filler, but which does not contain an X function which is active with respect to the elastomer.

Such coupling agents have been described in a large number of documents and are known to the person skilled in the art. In fact, any coupling agent effective to provide bonding or coupling between the reinforcing inorganic filler and the elastomer may be used.

Preferably, the agent coupling the elastomer to the reinforcing inorganic filler is an organosilane compound.

Preferably, the organosilane compound is selected from the group consisting of organosilane polysulfides (symmetrical or asymmetrical), polyorganosiloxanes, mercaptosilanes, masked mercaptosilanes, mercaptosilane dimers, masked mercaptosilane dimers, silane dimers having mercaptosilane units, mercaptosilane oligomers, masked mercaptosilane oligomers, and silane oligomers having at least one mercaptosilane unit and at least one masked mercaptosilane, preferably an organosilane polysulfide.

These agents for coupling elastomers to reinforcing inorganic fillers have been described in particular in a large number of documents, the best known being bifunctional alkoxysilanes, such as alkoxysilane sulfides. In particular, alkoxysilane sulfides which are referred to as "symmetrical" or "asymmetrical" depending on their specific structure are used, for example alkoxysilane sulfides as described in patent applications or patents U.S. Pat. No. 3, 3842111, 3873489, 3978103, U.S. Pat. No. 3997581, 4002594, U.S. Pat. No. 4072701, 4129585, or alkoxysilane sulfides as described in the recent documents U.S. Pat. No. 5,919, 5583245, U.S. Pat. No. 3, 5650457, U.S. Pat. No. 3, 5663358, U.S. Pat. No. 5663395, U.S. Pat. No. 5663396, U.S. Pat. No. 5674932, U.S. Pat. No. 5675014, U.S. Pat. No. 5684171, U.S. Pat. No. 5684172, U.S. Pat. No. 5696197, U.S. Pat. No. 5708053, U.S. Pat. No. 5892085 and WO 02/083782.

More preferably, the organosilane compound is selected from organosilane polysulfides (symmetric or asymmetric) (also known as silane polysulfides).

More particularly, silane polysulfides which are referred to as "symmetrical" or "asymmetrical" depending on their specific structure may be used, for example, as described in applications WO 03/002648 (or US 2005/016651) and WO 03/002649 (or US 2005/016650).

Particularly suitable are preferably silane polysulfides corresponding to the general formula (VII) below, without being limited to the following definitions:

Z-A-Sx-A-Z (VII),

wherein:

-x is an integer from 2 to 8 (preferably from 2 to 5);

the A symbols (same or different) represent a divalent hydrocarbon radical (preferably C)1-C18Alkylene or C6-C12Is more particularly C1-C10In particular C1-C4Alkylene groups of (a), particularly propylene);

the Z symbols (same or different) correspond to one of the following three formulae (VII):

Figure BDA0002336089980000331

wherein:

·Rathe radicals (substituted or unsubstituted and identical or different from each other) represent C1-C18Alkyl radical, C5-C18Cycloalkyl or C6-C18Aryl (preferably C)1-C6Alkyl, cyclohexyl or phenyl, especially C1-C4Alkyl, more particularly methyl and/or ethyl).

·RbThe radicals (substituted or unsubstituted and identical or different from each other) represent C1-C18Alkoxy or C5-C18Cycloalkoxy (preferably selected from C)1-C8Alkoxy and C5-C8A group of cycloalkoxy, still more preferably C1-C4The radical of an alkoxy radical, in particular methoxy and ethoxy).

In the case of mixtures of alkoxysilane polysulphides corresponding to the above general formula (VII), in particular the mixtures usually commercially available, the average value of the "x" index is a fraction preferably between 2 and 5, more preferably about 4. However, the invention can also be advantageously carried out with, for example, alkoxysilane disulfide (x ═ 2).

As an example of silane polysulfides, mention will be made more particularly of bis ((C)1-C4) Alkoxy (C)1-C4) Alkylsilyl (C)1-C4) Alkyl) polysulfides (in particular disulfides, trisulfides or tetrasulfides), for example bis (3-trimethoxysilylpropyl) polysulfide or bis (3-triethoxysilylpropyl) polysulfide. Among these compounds, bis (3-triethoxysilylpropyl) tetrasulfide (abbreviated to TESPT, of formula [ (C)2H5O)3Si(CH2)3S2]2) Or bis (triethoxysilylpropyl) disulfide (abbreviated TESPD, formula [ (C)2H5O)3Si(CH2)3S]2). As a preferred example, mention will also be made of bis (mono (C)1-C4) Alkoxy di (C)1-C4) Alkylsilylpropyl) polysulfides (in particular disulfides, trisulfides or tetrasulfides), more particularly bis (monoethoxydimethylsilylpropyl) tetrasulfide, for example from the aforementioned patent application WO02And/083782 (or US 7217751).

As examples of coupling agents other than alkoxysilane polysulfides, it is possible in particular to use difunctional POS (polyorganosiloxanes) or hydroxysilane polysulfides (R in the above formula VII)bOH), as described for example in patent applications WO 02/30939 (or US 6774255), WO 02/31041 (or US 2004/051210) and WO 2007/061550, or silanes or POS bearing an azodicarbonyl function, as described for example in patent applications WO 2006/125532, WO 2006/125533 and WO 2006/125534.

As examples of other silane sulfides, mention will be made, for example, of silanes bearing at least one mercapto (-SH) functional group (known as mercaptosilane) and/or at least one masking mercapto functional group, dimers or oligomers of these silanes, as described, for example, in patents or patent applications US6849754, WO99/09036, WO2006/023815, WO2007/098080, WO2007/98120, EP1994038, EP2079793, WO 2010/055 072685 and WO 2008/055986.

The content of agent for coupling the elastomer to the reinforcing inorganic filler can be easily adjusted by the person skilled in the art depending on the content of reinforcing inorganic filler used in the composition.

More particularly, the content of coupling agent is advantageously less than 20phr, it being understood that it is generally desirable to use as little coupling agent as possible. Generally, the coupling agent is present in an amount of 0.5% to 15% by weight relative to the weight of the reinforcing inorganic filler. The content thereof is preferably between 0.5 and 12phr, more preferably in the range from 3 to 10 phr.

Covering agent

The rubber compositions according to the invention may also comprise coupling activators (when coupling agents are used), agents covering the inorganic filler or, more generally, processing aids which, as a result of improving the dispersibility of the filler in the rubber matrix and of reducing the viscosity of the composition, are capable of improving the processability of the composition in the unprocessed state, these covering agents being known (see, for example, patent applications WO 2006/125533, WO 2007/017060 and WO 2007/003408), mention being made, for example, of hydroxysilanes or hydrolyzable silanes (see, for example, WO 2009/062733), alkylalkoxysilanes (in particular alkyltriethoxysilanes, such as 1-octyltriethoxysilane), polyols (such as diols or triols), polyethers (such as polyethylene glycols), primary, secondary or tertiary amines (such as trialkanolamines), hydroxylated or hydrolyzable polyorganosiloxanes (such as α, omega-dihydroxypolyorganosiloxanes (in particular α, omega-dihydroxypolydimethylsiloxanes) (see, for example, EP 0784072)) and fatty acids (such as stearic acid).

□ reinforcing organic filler

The rubber composition according to the invention may also comprise at least one reinforcing organic filler, for example of the carbon black or polymer type. Preferably, the reinforcing organic filler is carbon black.

All carbon blacks, in particular blacks of the type HAF, ISAF or SAF ("tire-grade" blacks), which are customarily used in tires, are suitable as carbon blacks. Among the carbon blacks, mention will more particularly be made of reinforcing carbon blacks of the 100, 200 or 300 series (ASTM grade), such as N115, N134, N234, N326, N330, N339, N347 or N375 blacks, or of higher series depending on the targeted application, such as N660, N683 or N772. The carbon black may, for example, have been introduced into the elastomer, in particular the isoprene elastomer, in the form of a masterbatch (see, for example, applications WO 97/36724 or WO 99/16600).

Mention may be made, as examples of polymeric organic fillers, of functionalized polyvinyl organic fillers, as described, for example, in applications WO2006/069792, WO 2006/069793, WO 2008/003434 and WO 2008/003435.

When the organic filler is combined with the reinforcing inorganic filler, the organic filler is used in a low proportion, that is, the reinforcing inorganic filler remains the main filler.

Preferably, the reinforcing organic filler is present in a fraction by weight of less than 50% relative to the total weight of the reinforcing filler (total weight of reinforcing filler + weight of reinforcing inorganic filler), preferably less than or equal to 20% relative to the total weight of reinforcing filler.

More particularly, the content of reinforcing organic filler (in particular of carbon black) is in the range extending from 2 to 20phr, more preferably in the range extending from 5 to 15 phr.

□ other additives

The rubber composition according to the invention may also optionally comprise all or part of the usual additives usually used in elastomer compositions intended for the manufacture of tyres or semi-finished products for tyres, such as pigments, protective agents (such as antiozone waxes, chemical antiozonants or antioxidants), antifatigue agents, crosslinking agents other than those mentioned above, reinforcing resins or plasticizers, methylene acceptors (for example phenolic resins) or methylene donors (for example HMT or H3M), as described for example in application WO 02/10269. Preferably, when the rubber composition of the invention comprises a plasticizer, it is selected from a solid hydrocarbon resin (or plasticizing resin), an extender oil (plasticizing oil) or a mixture of plasticizing oil and resin.

□ Cross-linking System

The rubber composition according to the invention comprises a chemical crosslinking system. Any type of crosslinking system known to those skilled in the art of rubber compositions may be used.

The crosslinking system is preferably a vulcanization system, that is to say a system based on sulfur (or on a sulfur donor agent) and a primary vulcanization accelerator. Various known secondary vulcanization accelerators or vulcanization activators, such as zinc oxide, stearic acid or equivalent compounds or guanidine derivatives (especially diphenylguanidine), can be added to the basic vulcanization system, these being incorporated in the first non-productive phase described later and/or during the productive phase.

When sulfur is used, it is preferably used in a content of between 0.5 and 12phr, in particular between 1 and 10 phr. The main vulcanization accelerator is used in an amount preferably between 0.5 and 10phr, more preferably between 0.5 and 5.0 phr.

The vulcanization system of the composition according to the invention may also comprise one or more additional accelerators, such as thiuram family compounds, zinc dithiocarbamate derivatives, sulfenamides, guanidines or thiophosphates. Any compound capable of acting as a vulcanization accelerator for diene elastomers in the presence of sulfur may be used in particular, in particular thiazole-type accelerators and derivatives thereof, thiuram-type accelerators and zinc dithiocarbamates. These accelerators are selected, for example, from the group consisting of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole disulfide (abbreviated to MBTS), tetrabenzylthiuram disulfide (TBZTD), N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazolesulfenamide (CBS), N-dicyclohexyl-2-benzothiazolesulfenamide (DCBS), N- (tert-butyl) -2-benzothiazolesulfenamide (TBBS), N- (tert-butyl) -2-benzothiazolesulfenimide (TBS), zinc dibenzyldithiocarbamate (ZBEC) and mixtures of these compounds. Preferably, a primary accelerator of the sulfenamide type is used.

□ Process for preparing a composition according to the invention

The rubber compositions of the invention, particularly for the manufacture of tires or semi-finished products for tires, can be prepared by any process known to the person skilled in the art.

For example, these rubber compositions according to the invention can be manufactured in a suitable mixer using two successive preparation stages, according to general procedures known to those skilled in the art: the first stage of thermomechanical working or kneading at high temperature (sometimes called the "non-productive" stage), the maximum temperature of which is marked Tmax) Between 130 ℃ and 200 ℃, preferably between 145 ℃ and 185 ℃, followed by a second stage of machining at low temperature (sometimes called "production" stage), generally less than 120 ℃ (for example between 60 ℃ and 100 ℃), during which a crosslinking system or vulcanization system is added; said stages have been described, for example, in the applications EP-A-0501227, EP-A-0735088 and EP-A-0810258.

For example, in the process for preparing the composition of the invention, the silica S (with or without the combination of another reinforcing inorganic filler (for example another silica) or of carbon black and of the agent coupling the elastomer to said reinforcing inorganic filler) is added to the elastomer (S) by kneading during the first "non-productive" stage, that is to say at least these components are added to the mixer and thermomechanically kneaded one or more times. Then, after kneading for, for example, 1 to 2 minutes, an optional additional covering agent or processing aid and various other additives other than the crosslinking system or the vulcanization system are added to the internal mixer. Thermomechanically kneading the mixture until the above-mentioned maximum temperature T is reachedmax. It is possible to imagine aOne or more further steps to prepare a masterbatch of elastomer/reinforcing inorganic filler intended to be added in a first "non-productive" stage. The masterbatch of elastomer/reinforcing inorganic filler comprising at least one silica S can be obtained by bulk mixing or liquid mixing starting from an elastomer latex and an aqueous dispersion of said reinforcing inorganic filler.

The mixture is cooled and then the crosslinking system (preferably the vulcanization system) is added, typically in an open mixer (e.g. an open mill) at low temperature (typically less than 100 ℃); the combined mixture is then mixed for several minutes, for example between 5 and 15 minutes. This second stage is the "production" stage.

The process for preparing the rubber composition according to the invention preferably comprises the following stages:

contacting at least one elastomer, at least one reinforcing inorganic filler and at least one agent for coupling the elastomer to the reinforcing inorganic filler; the reinforcing inorganic filler comprises at least one silica S having:

thermomechanically kneading all the mass once or more times until a maximum temperature between 110 ℃ and 190 ℃ is reached;

cooling the mixture of the previous step to a temperature below 100 ℃,

adding the crosslinking system to the cooled mixture of the preceding step,

kneading the mixture comprising the crosslinking system to a maximum temperature of less than 110 ℃.

The final composition thus obtained is then calendered (in particular for laboratory characterization) or extruded, for example in the form of a sheet or plate, to form a rubber profiled element, for example for the manufacture of semi-finished products (in particular for tires). These products can then be used to manufacture tyres having the advantages of the present invention, i.e. a good rolling resistance/wear compromise, according to techniques known to those skilled in the art.

Preferably, the method for preparing the rubber composition according to the invention also comprises a step of curing the kneaded mixture comprising the crosslinking system.

This curing (or vulcanizing) step is carried out according to methods known to those skilled in the art. It is carried out in a known manner, in particular, at a temperature generally between 130 ℃ and 200 ℃ and a pressure of several hundred bars for a sufficient time (which may, for example, be in the range between 5 and 90 minutes), said time depending in particular on the curing temperature, on the crosslinking system employed, on the vulcanization kinetics of the composition in question or on the dimensions of the tyre.

□ semi-finished product and tire

Another subject of the present invention relates to a semi-finished product, in particular for tyres, comprising at least one composition according to the invention as defined above. The semifinished product of the invention advantageously has an improved rolling resistance/wear resistance compromise. The semi-finished rubber composition may be in the uncured state (before crosslinking) or in the cured state (after crosslinking).

The semi-finished product may be any product used for manufacturing finished rubber products, such as tyres.

Preferably, the semi-finished product of the tire may be selected from the group consisting of underlayers, bonding rubbers between rubbers of different characteristics or calendering rubbers for metal or textile reinforcement, sidewall rubbers or treads. More preferably, the semi-finished product is a tire tread.

The semifinished product is obtained by methods known to the person skilled in the art. The preferred modes of silica S, elastomer and coupling agent mentioned for the composition according to the invention also apply to the semifinished product.

Another subject of the invention relates to a tyre comprising at least one rubber composition according to the invention as described above or comprising at least one semi-finished product as described above. The tyre of the invention advantageously has an improved rolling resistance/wear compromise.

The tyre of the invention may be intended in particular to be fitted to motor vehicles of the passenger vehicle, SUVs ("sport utility vehicles"), two-wheeled vehicles (in particular motorcycles) or aircraft type, as well as industrial vehicles (for example heavy agricultural vehicles or civil engineering vehicles) and other transport or handling vehicles chosen from vans, heavy vehicles (i.e. subways, buses, heavy road transport vehicles (trucks, tractors, trailers) or off-road vehicles).

The tyre of the invention is obtained by methods known to those skilled in the art. The preferred modes of silica S, elastomer and coupling agent mentioned for the composition according to the invention are also applicable to this tire.

16.7L of purified water and 210gNa2SO4(solids) was charged to a 25L stainless steel reactor. The solution obtained in this way was stirred and heated to a temperature of 92 ℃. The whole process is carried out at this temperature with stirring, so as to maintain a homogeneous reaction medium. Sulfuric acid was added at a concentration of 7.7 wt% to achieve a pH equal to 3.90.

Sodium silicate Solution (SiO) was added to the reactor at a flow rate of 115g/min over 45 seconds2/Na2O weight ratio of 3.45, SiO2Concentration 19.4 wt%). The same sodium silicate solution was used throughout the process. Then, a sodium silicate solution having a flow rate of 115g/min and a sulfuric acid solution having a flow rate of 140g/min and a concentration equal to 7.7% by weight were simultaneously fed into the reactor over 14 minutes. The flow rate of the sulfuric acid solution is adjusted so as to maintain the pH of the reaction medium equal to 4.50. At the end of this step, a sodium silicate solution and a 96% by weight sulfuric acid solution (referred to as 96% sulfuric acid in the remainder of the description) are added simultaneously over 10 minutes at a flow rate of 115 g/min. The flow of the 96% sulfuric acid solution was adjusted so as to maintain the pH equal to 4.50.

The addition of 96% sulfuric acid was stopped and the addition of said sodium silicate solution at a flow rate of 93g/min was continued until the pH of the reaction medium reached 8.00.

Then, a sodium silicate solution and a 96% sulfuric acid solution were added simultaneously to the reaction medium at a flow rate of 181g/min over 3 minutes. The flow of 96% sulfuric acid solution was adjusted so that the pH of the reaction medium was maintained at a value of 8.00.

Then, the following were added simultaneously over 15 minutes: sodium silicate solution with flow rate of 181g/min, sodium aluminate solution with flow rate of 10g/min (aluminum weight%: 11.6% -Na)2Weight% of O: 19.9%) and 96% sulfuric acid solution. The flow of 96% sulfuric acid solution was adjusted so that the pH of the reaction medium was maintained at a value of 8.00.

At the end of this simultaneous addition, the reaction medium is adjusted to a pH of 4.80 with 96% sulfuric acid. The reaction mixture was aged for 5 minutes. A suspension of precipitated silica is thus obtained.

The reaction medium is filtered and washed in a filter press. The obtained filter cake was mechanically crushed. The resulting suspension was dried by atomization, thereby obtaining precipitated silica S1. The characteristics of the precipitated silica S1 are shown in table VI.

1129L of water and 29.7kg of Na2SO4(solids) was charged to a 2500L stainless steel reactor. The solution obtained in this way was stirred and heated to a temperature of 92 ℃. The whole process is carried out at this temperature with stirring, so as to maintain a homogeneous reaction medium. To the reactor was added 96% by weight of sulfuric acid (referred to as 96% sulfuric acid in the rest of the description) to reach a pH equal to 3.90. Sodium silicate Solution (SiO) was added to the reactor at a flow rate of 353L/h over 61 seconds2/Na2O3.46 (by weight) SiO2Concentration 19.4 wt%). The flow of 96% sulfuric acid solution is adjusted so as to maintain the pH of the reaction medium equal to 3.90. At the end of this step, a sodium silicate solution and a 96% sulfuric acid solution were added simultaneously at a flow rate of 445L/h over 9 minutes. Then, a solution of sodium silicate and a 96% solution of sulfuric acid were added simultaneously to the reaction medium at a flow rate of 703L/h over a period of 3 minutes. The flow of 96% sulfuric acid solution was adjusted so that the pH of the reaction medium was maintained at a value of 8.00.

Then, the following were added simultaneously over 15 minutes: sodium silicate solution with flow rate of 703L/h, sodium aluminate solution with flow rate of 47.6kg/h (weight percent of Al: 11.6% -Na)2Weight% of O: 19.4%) and 96% sulfuric acid solution. The flow of 96% sulfuric acid solution was adjusted so that the pH of the reaction medium was maintained at a value of 8.00.

II.2 preparation of the rubber composition to be tested

The rubber compositions to be tested were prepared in the following manner: the diene elastomer (or mixture of diene elastomers, where appropriate), the reinforcing inorganic filler (silica to be tested), the agent for coupling the elastomer to the reinforcing inorganic filler are introduced into an internal mixer filled to 70% and having an initial vessel temperature of about 60 ℃ and, after kneading for 1 to 2 minutes, the various other components are added, with the exception of the sulphur and of the sulfenamide main accelerator. Thermomechanical working (non-productive phase) is then carried out in one or two steps (total duration of kneading equal to about 5 to 7 minutes, which the skilled man knows how to adjust this total duration according to the elastomeric matrix of the composition) until a maximum "discharge" temperature of about 160-. The mixture thus obtained is recovered and cooled, then the sulphur and sulfenamide accelerators are added to an open mixer (homo-finisher) at 30 ℃ and all the material is mixed (production stage) for 3 to 4 minutes.

The composition is then formed to measure its physical or mechanical properties (e.g., in the form of a 4mm coupon, etc.) and cured (or vulcanized) as appropriate to measure the cured properties.

II.3. test A

The purpose of this experiment was to demonstrate the improved performance properties of the rubber compositions according to the invention based on the novel silicas compared with those conventionally used for "green tires" and marketed therewith.

For this purpose, four rubber compositions specifically used for the manufacture of tire treads were compared:

control compositions T1 and T2 contained silica SC1,

compositions C1 and C2 according to the invention comprise silica S1.

Control compositions T1 and T2 are rubber compositions for a commercial "green tire", respectively, which are known to have a good rolling resistance/wear performance property compromise.

The comparison compositions T2 and C2 according to the invention differ from the comparison compositions T1 and C1 according to the invention in the nature of the elastomer and in the content of filler. The elastomeric matrix of compositions T1 and C1 comprises a functionalized diene elastomer, and the elastomeric matrix of compositions T2 and C2 comprises an unfunctionalized diene elastomer.

Table VII gives the formulations of the different compositions, the contents being expressed in phr (parts by weight per hundred parts by weight of elastomer).

The optimum content of Diphenylguanidine (DPG) is adjusted according to the BET specific surface area of the silica to be tested.

In fact, the larger the BET specific surface area of the silica, the more necessary it is to use a high content of DPG in order to cover the surface of the silica and to promote its dispersion. It is known to the person skilled in the art how to adjust these contents depending on the nature of the silica used. The formulations can be compared.

The density (. rho.) of each of the compositions T1 and C1 was equal to 1.23.

The density (. rho.) of each of the compositions T2 and C2 was equal to 1.18.

The inventive compositions C6, C7 and C8, which comprise the novel silicas of different morphologies, all exhibit reduced wear, i.e. good abrasion resistance, compared to the control composition T1.

The compositions C6 and C7 according to the invention also have very good hysteresis properties compared with the control composition T1.

Composition C8 has slightly higher hysteresis than control composition T1. However, this slight degradation is still acceptable for use in tires, and the improvement in wear of the composition is significant.
