Technical Field

Background

The present disclosure is described in the context of the third generation partnership project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE), i.e., enhanced universal terrestrial radio access network (E-UTRAN). However, the problems and solutions described herein are equally applicable to radio access networks and User Equipment (UE) implementing other access technologies and standards. LTE is used as an example technology to which this solution is applicable. Therefore, the use of LTE in the description is particularly useful for understanding problems and solutions.

The 3GPP specifications include serving aerial vehicles using LTE network deployments with base station antennas for terrestrial coverage. Certain specifications relate to interference caused by drones (i.e., Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)) using LTE networks and performing handovers between cells in the networks. The goal of a particular LTE specification is to provide connectivity and location services for drones.

An airborne UE may experience radio propagation characteristics that are different from the radio propagation characteristics experienced by the UE when on or near the ground. When the aircraft is flying at a low altitude relative to the base station antenna altitude, the aircraft behaves similar to a conventional UE. However, when the aircraft is flying far above the base station antenna altitude, the uplink signals from the aircraft become more visible to multiple cells due to line-of-sight propagation conditions.

Uplink signals from the aircraft may increase interference in neighboring cells. The increased interference adversely affects conventional UEs (e.g., smartphones, internet of things (IoT) devices, etc.) on or near the ground. Thus, the network may need to restrict the admission of aircraft into the network to constrain the perceived throughput performance of conventional UEs.

Furthermore, since the base station antenna may be tilted downward, the UE may be served by the main lobe of the antenna when the UE is on the ground or below the base station height. However, when a drone is flying above the antenna boresight (boresight), the drone may be served by the side lobes of the antenna. An example is shown in fig. 1.

FIG. 1 is a schematic diagram illustrating an unmanned aerial vehicle flying above the elevation of a base station antenna. The UAV10 is served by a base station 20 a. For example, at flight altitudes above 200 feet, the UAV10 may receive interference from the base station 20b or 20c, or may interfere with UEs served by the base station 20b or 20 c. More information can be found in RP-170779 "New SID on Enhanced support for axial Vehicles," the entire contents of RP-170779 being incorporated herein by reference.

One way that the network uses to determine link strength, and thus interference strength, is a reference signal received power/quality (RSRP/Q) measurement or a reference signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (RS-SINR) measurement. RSRP measures the downlink signal. Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) systems may not be considered fully reciprocal. However, the link quality in the uplink and downlink are not completely independent. The RSRP value may also provide a rough idea about the link quality of the uplink. Furthermore, RSRP measurements are also used for drone mobility.

One aspect of measurement configuration is measurement reporting configuration, which can be found in section 5.5.1 of 3GPP TS 36.331. The configuration may include a list of reporting configurations, where each reporting configuration consists of the following.

The reporting criteria are criteria that trigger the UE to send a measurement report. This may be periodic or a single event description.

The reporting format includes the amount the UE includes in the measurement report and associated information (e.g., the number of cells to report).

A single event trigger may be a one shot or "event triggered periodic" based on the event trigger satisfied such that the measurement will be sent periodically after the event is triggered. Both conventional periodic measurements and event-triggered periodic measurements are controlled with a report interval (report interval) and a report amount (report _ amount), which is described in TS36.331 as follows:

reportammount (reported volume): the number of measurement reports applicable to triggerType "event" and to triggerType "periodic". If the purpose is set to reportCGI or reportstrongcellsforsson, only the value 1 applies.

ReportInterval (report interval): indicating the interval between periodic reports. If the UE performs periodic reporting (i.e., when reportammount exceeds 1), ReportInterval is applicable to triggerType "event" and to triggerType "periodic". The value ms120 corresponds to 120 milliseconds, the value ms240 corresponds to 240 milliseconds, and so on; while the value min1 corresponds to 1 minute, min6 corresponds to 6 minutes, and so on.

Measurement reporting is described in section 5.5.5 of 3GPP TS 36.331. For "event triggered" and "event triggered periodic," the process is described in section 5.5.4:

if triggerType is set to event and if after layer 3(layer 3) filtering occurring within the VarMeasConfig for an event (i.e., an event corresponding to the eventId of the corresponding reportConfig within the VarMeasConfig) defined timeToTrigger, one or more applicable cells not included in cellstartreportlist satisfy the entry condition applicable to the event for all measurements (subsequent cells trigger the event), numberofreportsentense defined within the VarMeasReportList is set to 0 and the considered cell is included in cellstartreportlist defined within the VarMeasReportList for that measId. If the UE supports T312 and if a useT312 for the event is included and T310 is running, if T312 is not running, a timer T312 is started with a value configured in the corresponding measObject. The measurement reporting procedure is then started as specified in section 5.5.5.

The following events are defined for E-UTRA and inter-RAT (inter-RAT) in LTE. The Information Element (IE) ReportConfigEUTRA specifies the criteria used to trigger the E-UTRA measurement reporting event. The E-UTRA measurement reporting event related to cell specific reference signals (CRS) is marked AN, where N equals 1, 2, and so on.

Event A1: the service becomes better than the absolute threshold;

event A2: the service becomes worse than the absolute threshold;

event A3: the adjacent cell becomes better than the PCell/PSCell by a certain offset;

event A4: the neighbor cell becomes better than the absolute threshold;

event A5: the PCell/PSCell becomes worse than an absolute threshold of 1, while the neighboring cells become better than another absolute threshold of 2.

Event A6: the neighboring cell becomes better than the SCell by some offset.

The E-UTRA measurement reporting event for CSI-RS is labeled CN, where N equals 1 and 2.

Event C1: the CSI-RS resource becomes better than the absolute threshold;

event C2: the CSI-RS resource becomes better than the reference CSI-RS resource by a certain offset;

event V1: CBR becomes greater than the absolute threshold;

event V2: the CBR becomes less than the absolute threshold.

The IE reportconfiginter RAT specifies the criteria for triggering the inter-RAT measurement reporting event. The inter-RAT measurement reporting events for UTRAN, GERAN, and CDMA2000 are labeled BN, where N equals 1, 2, and so on. The inter-RAT measurement reporting event for WLAN is labeled WN, where N equals 1, 2, and so on.

Event B1: the neighbor cell becomes better than the absolute threshold;

event B2: the PCell becomes worse than an absolute threshold of 1 and the neighboring cell becomes better than another absolute threshold of 2.

Event W1: the WLAN becomes better than the threshold;

event W2: all WLANs within the WLAN mobility set become worse than threshold1, while WLANs outside the WLAN mobility set become better than threshold 2;

event W3: all WLANs in the WLAN mobility set become worse than threshold.

The b1 and b2 event thresholds for CDMA2000 are CDMA2000 pilot detection thresholds and are represented as equal to an unsigned binary number [ -2x10log10Ec/Io ] in units of 0.5 dB.

When the UE is configured with event-triggered measurements (e.g., event a1) and a certain cell becomes 3dB better than the serving cell, the UE triggers a measurement report. numberofreportsents is a counter that points to the report volume and is set to 0 whenever a new cell/reference signal configures a trigger event. Thus, the reporting volume only controls the amount of periodic reporting for event periodic reporting. The cellsTriggeredList controls the same cell not to trigger the process multiple times.

However, for drones, multiple cell/reference signal configurations may continuously satisfy the entry condition. An event may be triggered multiple times in a short time, thereby initiating multiple measurements.

The same problem may also occur for one cell transmitting multiple beams and UEs configured to measure the NR of the beam quality based on NR reference signals like SS blocks or channel state information reference signals (CSI-RS).
