The invention belongs to the field of the following: the present disclosure relates to paperboard substrates that have oil-, grease-, and moisture-repellency properties while having a natural appearance while remaining highly repulpable, and do not have a tendency to block.

Background

Summary of The Invention

It is a general object of the present invention to provide oil, grease and moisture protection on unbleached paperboard by applying one or more layers of an aqueous coating that does not contain fluorochemicals or waxes. The coating may be applied on a paper machine or by an off-line coater. The paperboard coated according to the invention provides oil-, grease-and moisture-resistance, does not have any tendency to block, complies with safety and environmental regulations, has good repulpability, shows a natural appearance, and can be manufactured at low cost.

In one embodiment, a coated unbleached paperboard is disclosed, comprising an unbleached paperboard substrate having a first side and a second side; and a first coating in contact with the first face, the first coating having about 6 to 14 lbs/3000 ft2And comprises a binder and a pigment, the first coating being substantially free of fluorochemical orAnd (3) wax. The ratio of binder to pigment in the first coating layer may be 30 to 50 parts binder per 100 parts pigment by weight.

A second coating may be applied over the first coating, the second coating also being substantially free of fluorochemicals or waxes. The coated paperboard provides barrier properties to at least one of oil, grease, and moisture; and may be at least 98.5% repulpable.
