Technical Field

The present invention relates to improvements in umbrellas and similar devices.

Background

Currently, existing umbrellas include a collapsible frame, such as a metal frame, in a first type. One drawback of this first type derives from the fact that: a compromise must be reached between a light but not very robust solution and a more reliable but heavy solution. In particular, lightweight umbrellas tend to tip inwards in the wind, while stronger umbrellas are generally more cumbersome because they are longer or the frame is fragile. In addition, the design of such umbrellas is not suitable for providing itself with a particular shape other than the generally known conical shape, the very large opening angle of which provides protection from rain while removing it via the edge of the canopy.

A second type of existing umbrella relates to inflatable umbrellas. They are lightweight and their inflated shape is generally resistant to wind. Furthermore, any shape can be provided absolutely, as there is no folding mechanism to define a specific umbrella dynamics. In contrast, they have a disadvantage that makes their use less attractive in that they must be inflated prior to use. One solution to this drawback is described in document FR 3051637.

However, such umbrellas do not provide the user with optimal comfort, particularly in terms of brightness and use of any electrical and/or electronic equipment that the umbrella may have.

Detailed Description

Referring to fig. 1, there is shown an embodiment of an umbrella 1 according to the present invention in an open position and carried by a user. The umbrella 1 according to the invention has in this open position a pointed arched shape which allows the user to bring himself or herself into a dry environment and provides protection against rain, wind and hail. The umbrella 1 according to the invention can assume different shapes, at least in the open position. However, according to these different embodiments, the overall shape of the umbrella 1 according to the invention is compatible with a convex shape forming a dome-shaped part on the outer surface of the umbrella.

In this case, the umbrella 1 according to the invention is an inflatable umbrella. Such an inflatable umbrella enables to provide a variety of shapes to meet the criteria of tasting, design or aerodynamic shape in order to isolate as effectively as possible raindrops bouncing off the umbrella 1 according to the invention in the open position. As shown in fig. 1, the umbrella 1 according to the invention represents an embodiment whose shape provides an elegant, practical appearance and good protection. The umbrella is described in detail in document FR 3051637, to which reference may be made for more information. However, for a better understanding, some of this information will be reviewed below.

The umbrella 1 according to the invention, shown here as an inflatable version, comprises: an inflatable base 20, which serves as a circumferential frame, and an inflatable arc 10, also referred to as bow 10, which forms something like a meridian line on the structure of the umbrella 1 according to the invention in the inflated open position. The bow 10 serves as a longitudinal frame element extending between the base 20 and the top 3 of the umbrella 1 according to the invention.

According to one embodiment, at least one arc is formed by a rigid arc 101 comprising a grip portion 15. The rigid arc 101 may be tubular and have a circular or elliptical cross-sectional shape. According to another embodiment, the rigid arc 101 has a U-shaped cross section.

The combination of bow 10 and base 20 may form a single air chamber. In this embodiment, the bows 10 each include a joint that allows a certain amount of air to circulate between the bows and the base 20. In a first variant, air is circulated between the bows via the top 3.

According to a second variant, air circulates between the bows via the joints where the bows engage with the base 20. In the latter case, air circulates between each arc 10 and the base 20, the base 20 forming a common air passage for inflating and deflating the umbrella 1 according to the invention.

According to various embodiments, the umbrella 1 according to the invention may comprise a given number of bows 10. The number of bows 10 is selected to provide a strong, coordinated structure and to be able to define an interior space that is as pleasant as possible for the user. The presence of the rigid arc 101 strengthens the structure and enables the umbrella 1 according to the invention to maintain the overall shape, in particular at the location where the user is holding the umbrella.

According to a variant embodiment, the rigid arc 101 is a telescopic arc, which can be extended via a specific action on the part of the user.

According to the embodiment shown in fig. 2, the umbrella 1 according to the invention comprises a set of panels 5 forming a canopy, at least one of which is transparent. According to a variant embodiment, all the panels of the panel-type canopy 5 are opaque in order to form a sunshade. The invention thus relates to a parasol in addition to an umbrella. Although examples of umbrellas are described in detail in the remainder of this specification, all aspects of the invention are equally applicable to awnings.

The set of canopy-forming panels 5 forms a unitary canopy defining the overall shape of the umbrella 1 according to the invention when in the open position. To this end, according to one embodiment, the panels of the panel headliner 5 are assembled in a manner to form a single headliner. The assembly may be achieved in various ways, for example by adhesive bonding or by fusion bonding or by electrofusion welding.

The entire roof covers the whole of the umbrella 1 according to the invention and connects the bows 10, 101 to each other and to the base 20. The bows 10, 101 are connected together at the top 3 of the bows 10, 101 and the bows 10, 101 are joined to the base 20.

The entire roof formed by the set of panels 5 is arranged such that each of the panels of the panel roof 5 is assembled between two adjacent bows 10 and a base 20. Such an assembly is carried out, for example, by electrofusion welding to the bow 10, 101 or the base 20.

According to a variant embodiment, the panel-type canopy 5 of the umbrella 1 according to the invention is made by superposing two fusion-bonded panels or films. It can be manufactured in one piece or in several pieces. During the operation of fusion bonding the two panels or films to each other, a rigid longitudinal element, also called prepositioning rod, is inserted between the two panels in order to form the inflatable bow 10. It is then removed to retain the air volume. In this case, the inflatable bow 10 is formed by overlapping two layers of film leaving longitudinal slits along the panels to more or less form channels.

According to a variant embodiment, the umbrella 1 according to the invention has an overall shape that is symmetrical about the rotation axis. According to another variant embodiment, the umbrella 1 according to the invention presents a shape that is asymmetrical about the rotation axis. This is the case for the umbrella shown in the drawings.

The asymmetry of the latter variant embodiment makes it possible to define a front portion 501 forming the front of the umbrella and a rear portion 502 forming the rear.

In fig. 2, the front part of an umbrella 1 according to the invention is denoted 501. It therefore corresponds to the front of the umbrella 1 according to the invention, i.e. to the part that will face the head of the user who is holding the umbrella 1 according to the invention for walking. The portion is preferably at least partially transparent so that a user can see through the panel forming the portion 501 to avoid obstacles or other passers-by.

According to a variant embodiment, the entire ceiling is completely transparent.

According to one embodiment of the invention, at least one of the panels of the panel-type canopy 5 comprises means for treating solar radiation.

According to a first variant embodiment, the means for treating solar radiation comprise a photochromic film positioned on the transparent panel or panels of the panel-type canopy 5. This allows the light passing through the transparent panel or panels to be filtered dynamically, i.e. according to brightness, in order to improve the visual comfort of the user of the umbrella 1 according to the invention. In particular, in this variant embodiment of the umbrella 1 according to the invention, the panel forming the transparent front portion 501 comprises such a photochromic film. In another variant embodiment, the umbrella 1 according to the invention comprises a top panel 503 of a panel-type canopy 5 extending around the top 3 of the umbrella 1 according to the invention. The roof panel 503 is connected to the other panels of the paneled headliner 5 by an assembly 504, the assembly 504 being achieved in various ways, for example by adhesive bonding or by fusion bonding or by electrofusion welding. The top panel 503 includes a photochromic film. In a further variant embodiment, in which all the panels of the panel-type headliner 5 are transparent, a photochromic film is located in all these panels.

In the case of panels formed by the superposition of two fusion-bonded panels or films, the photochromic film forming the device for treating solar radiation is sandwiched between the two films or panels.

According to a second variant embodiment, the means for treating solar radiation comprise a photovoltaic film. The photovoltaic film includes a photovoltaic cell layer that can be attached to a panel or film that may or may not be transparent. This enables to provide a source of energy for powering any electrical and/or electronic device with which the umbrella 1 according to the invention may be equipped. In particular, in this variant embodiment of the umbrella 1 according to the invention, the panels 502 forming the transparent or opaque rear part of the umbrella 1 according to the invention comprise such photovoltaic films. In another variant embodiment, the umbrella 1 according to the invention comprises a top panel 503 of the panel-type canopy 5. The roof panel 503 is connected to the other panels of the paneled headliner 5 by an assembly 504, the assembly 504 being achieved in various ways, for example by adhesive bonding or by fusion bonding or by electrofusion welding. The top panel 503 includes a photovoltaic film.

Again, in the case of panels formed by overlapping two fusion-bonded panels or films, the photovoltaic film forming the means for treating solar radiation is sandwiched between the two films or panels, it being understood that the outer film or panel is transparent so that light can reach the photovoltaic film.

According to a variant embodiment, the umbrella 1 according to the invention is designed to assume a shape that extends below the shoulders or even the chest of the individual.

The grip element 15 of the umbrella 1 according to the invention will now be described.

According to a first embodiment, the grip element 15 is fixed to one of the arc-shaped pieces 10, 101 of the umbrella 1 according to the invention 101. In this case, the grip element 15 is arranged in proximity to the base 20 so as to benefit from the rigidity of the structure at the level of its circumferential base 20.

The grip element 15 shown here comprises a housing 54, in which housing 54 a micro compressor 51 is arranged. Fig. 3 provides an illustration of one embodiment of such a grip element 15. The grip element 15 forms a hand grip and can therefore be designed to be able to be held in a hand.

According to a variant embodiment, the grip element 15 comprises a housing 54 with a grip portion. The grip element 15 may be defined as a substantially cylindrical shaped element having a rough portion or a geometry designed to be able to be held in the hand.

The grip member 15 may include an opening (not shown) and a first housing portion to accommodate the micro-compressor 51. The opening allows the micro-compressor 51 to be inserted. A first cover may be provided to retain the grip element 15 within the housing 54.

The power supply for the micro-compressor 51 is incorporated into the grip element 15 within the housing 54. As a variant, a second housing part is designed in the housing 54 for the insertion of a power supply for the micro-compressor 51 therein. The second housing part may be accessible via an opening comprising, for example, a removable second cover. Alternatively, both the micro-compressor 51 and its power supply can be arranged within the same housing portion via a single opening. The power source may be a rechargeable battery or batteries.

In the case of a power supply comprising rechargeable batteries, these batteries can be electrically connected to the photovoltaic cells of the photovoltaic film forming the means for treating solar radiation provided in at least one of the panels of the panel-type canopy 5, as previously described.

Furthermore, the housing 54 of the grip element 15 forms a cylindrical body, in this case comprising a first lateral opening 52 for discharging a quantity of air 53 from the micro-compressor 51. In this case, in fig. 3 and 4, the lateral opening of the housing coincides with the air outlet 52 of the micro-compressor. The two outlets are designed to cooperate with or be in fluid communication with each other. Furthermore, it comprises a second opening 57 coinciding with the external air pump inlet 57 of the micro-compressor 51.

As described above, as shown in fig. 3, 4, 5 and 6, a miniature compressor 51 of small size is incorporated into the grip member 15. According to another embodiment, the micro-compressor 51 is incorporated into the rigid arc 101. It may for example be arranged in a portion of the arc extending between the lower end and the gripping element 15.

The micro-compressor 51 comprises an air inlet 57 which allows it to suck a certain amount of air 56 and compress it so that it can be injected into the inflatable part of the umbrella 1 according to the invention via the air outlet 52. Then, a certain amount of air 53 is able to inflate the umbrella 1 according to the invention in a short time.

According to another embodiment, the micro compressor 51 is wound with a compressed air bag. The interface between the micro-compressor 51 and the bladder allows to activate the air intake of the bladder for injection into the air chamber formed by the inflated bow 10 and the base 20. According to one embodiment, the bladder is removable and interchangeable. The capsule can be accessed by a compartment of the housing 54 of the gripping element 15 or a compartment of the rigid arc 101, so that it can be replaced once it is empty. According to another embodiment, the pumping function of the micro-compressor 51 may be used to refill the bladder.

The micro-compressor 51 may include an activation control that allows for automatic activation of pumping, compression, and generation of the airflow 53. According to one embodiment, button 55 allows for activation of the command by simply pressing the button.

Fig. 6 shows the grip element 15 held in a hand 61. The movement of the thumb of the hand 61 over the button 55 causes the generation of an air flow 53 which is expelled from the micro-compressor 51 towards the inflatable parts 10, 20 of the umbrella 1 according to the invention. Here it is shown that two air outlets allow a certain amount of air 53 to be injected into the inflatable parts 10, 20 of the umbrella 1 according to the invention.

According to one embodiment, the housing 54 comprises an upper portion comprising a push button 55, the push button 55 being used to actuate a push button of the micro compressor 51. According to another embodiment, the button of the micro-compressor 51 cooperates with an opening of the housing 54 such that the button 55 is visible. The housing 54 further comprises at least one first lateral opening 52 for discharging the pumped compressed air 53 and at least one second opening 57 for sucking in ambient air 56. An opening in the housing 54 mates with an opening of the micro-compressor 51.

According to another embodiment, when the umbrella 1 according to the invention comprises a rigid arc 101, it comprises at least one push button 55 or actuator to actuate the micro-compressor 51 to inflate the umbrella 1. According to one embodiment, the rigid arc 101 comprises at least one opening for the passage of a push-button of the micro-compressor, on which the push-button is directly accessible. The rigid arc 101 may comprise at least a first lateral opening to discharge the pumped compressed air into the air chambers 10, 20. According to one embodiment, at least one second opening may be provided for pumping ambient air 56 when the bladder is not needed. In the case of a bladder, the micro-compressor is incorporated into a rigid arc along with the bladder. Thus, the actuator initiates inflation and thus causes the micro-compressor to draw air from the bladder. In various embodiments, the micro-compressor 51 includes one air inlet for drawing air from the bladder and one air inlet for drawing in ambient air.

According to a variant embodiment, the micro-compressor comprises an electric valve.

As shown in fig. 8, one embodiment of an umbrella 1 according to the invention comprises means 110 for hands-free umbrella in the open position. This allows the user of the umbrella 1 according to the invention to carry the umbrella while freeing up both hands for other activities, while at the same time being protected by the umbrella 1 according to the invention. In one embodiment, the device 110 includes a shoulder rest that can be deployed in a use position and positioned over a user's shoulder. To this end, the shoulder rests are mounted so as to be able to rotate at the ends of the arms on the rigid arc 101 of the umbrella 1 according to the invention. When not in use, the shoulder rest is folded against the rigid arcuate member 101 in which it can be stored.

Optionally, the umbrella 1 according to the invention comprises obstacle detection means. The obstacle detecting means shown here is, for example, a camera 31 located at the top 3 of the umbrella 1 according to the invention. In a variant embodiment, the obstacle detection means may be a proximity radar/sensor positioned on the umbrella 1 according to the invention, for example on the periphery formed by the circumferential frame 20 and/or on the bow 10, 101. The obstacle detection device also comprises a processing and warning unit connected to the camera 31 or to the proximity radar/sensor. The obstacle detection means are powered by rechargeable batteries and/or by photovoltaic cells of a photovoltaic film forming means for processing solar radiation provided in at least one of the panels of the panel-type canopy 5, as previously described.

The invention has been shown and described in general with reference to an inflatable umbrella as described in document FR 3051637. However, the claimed invention is also applicable to conventional umbrellas having a foldable mechanical frame, such as a metal frame. The claimed invention is also applicable to similar devices such as awnings.

In other electrical and/or electronic devices that can be incorporated in the umbrella 1 according to the invention, the umbrella comprises:

-a wireless interface for pairing wireless electronic devices, such as mobile phones, tablets, digital personal assistants or any other similar electronic device. Thus, for example, the umbrella 1 according to the invention may transmit a status parameter, such as inflation/deflation status, so that the electronic device enables the data transfer functionality.
