Technical Field

The present invention relates to the field of computer and telecommunications network connectors. More particularly, the present invention relates to a connector jack including a plurality of wires, such as an RJ45 connector. Such connectors are generally intended for use in cross-connect panels, particularly in high density cross-connect panels.

Increasing throughput through RJ 45-type cables and connectors particularly requires increasing the number of wires while maintaining the same footprint. Furthermore, increasing throughput also requires improved protection of the connector from electromagnetic interference generated by the connector itself.

Background

Document US6116964 discloses a communication connector assembly capable of responding to the proposed class 6 performance level with respect to the resulting crosstalk. The assembly includes: a metal plate having a front portion and a number of elongated terminal contact wires, a base portion of which is connected to one end of an insert (carte), a free end portion of which is used for electrically contacting a power connector. The terminal contact wires extend in parallel and are coplanar with each other over a front portion of the insert, and free end portions of the terminal contact wires project from the front portion of the insert. The free end portion is configured to resiliently deflect toward the insert when the respective connector engages the free end portion to the insert in a direction parallel to the insert. The crosstalk compensation device is associated with at least one of the terminal contact wires at a location where the wires are coplanar with each other. This type of connector does not allow to simplify the connection of the strands in the connector. Furthermore, no ground connection is provided in this type of connector.

Detailed Description

For purposes of clarity, the same reference numbers will be used throughout the drawings to refer to the same or like parts. The numerical references indicate individual components or common components. Adjacent text labels designate specific parts.

Referring to fig. 1-5, an exemplary receptacle according to an embodiment of the present invention is shown with respect to a longitudinal axis X and a vertical axis Z. The socket shown is of the RJ45 type. The present invention relates more generally to computer and telecommunications network connectors, such as RJ11, RJ12, RJ25, RJ45, ARJ45 or RJ48 connectors.

The socket includes a main body 1 and a connection module 2. The body 1 extends along a longitudinal axis X and comprises a front face 12, defined by the direction of the vector X. The front face 12 comprises an aperture intended to receive a plug complementary to the socket. The body 1 comprises a plurality of insulation-displacing contacts 11 intended to each house a strand of the feeder cable 4. All insulation displacement contacts 11 have the same orientation. The body 1 also comprises a rear face 13, defined by a direction opposite to the direction of the vector X, intended to house the connection module 2. The body also comprises a base 16 intended to support a bar 17. The rod 17 also provides electrical contact with the base 16.

The connection module 2 is a separate element from the socket body 1 and comprises a plurality of slots 21 intended to each receive one end of a strand of the cable 4. The connection module 2 is arranged to be inserted into the seat 16 of the body 1 to push each strand of the shielded electrical cable 4 against the respective insulation displacement contact. According to the alternative embodiment shown, the axis of the cable 4 is substantially parallel or coincident with the longitudinal axis X of the body 1.

The lever 3 is pivotally mounted about the axis of the base 16. In the upper position, the lever 17 frees up space intended for the insertion of the connection module 2. When the connection module 2 is inserted, the lowering of the rod 17 causes the displacement of the strands of the shielded electrical cable 4 against the insulation-displacing contacts 11.

According to the invention, the insulation displacement contacts 11 are mounted in the body 1 by means of at least two plates 14. The plates 14 are parallel to each other. The insulation displacement contacts 11 are arranged substantially along the row 15. Each plate 14 comprises at least one row 15 of insulation displacement contacts 11. According to the invention, each row 15 is arranged substantially in a plane P. The planes containing the rows 14 are independent and parallel to each other. This particular arrangement makes it possible to offset the insulation-displacing contacts 11 along the longitudinal axis X, so that all the insulation-displacing contacts 11 can be connected, for example in a single movement, when the lever 17 is manipulated after the connection module has been inserted into the base 16 of the socket body 1. It can therefore be understood that the handling of the strands of the connecting shielded cable 4 is very simple.

According to the alternative embodiment shown, the plane P containing the rows 15 of insulation-displacement contacts 11 is also perpendicular to the axis of the cable 4.

According to an alternative embodiment, the insulation displacement contacts 11 are oriented in a direction parallel to the plate 14. Similarly, according to another alternative embodiment, the plate 14 is substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis X of the body 1. According to this alternative embodiment, the insulation displacement contacts 11 are then oriented along a vertical axis Z. Furthermore, according to the alternative embodiment of fig. 2, the plate 14 is mounted on a support 18 to facilitate assembly of the plate in the socket body 1. According to the embodiment shown, the socket comprises 8 strands of a shielded cable 4. In this configuration, each plate 14 comprises 4 insulation displacement contacts 11.

According to an alternative embodiment in fig. 3, the connection module 2 comprises at least one partition wall 20.1, 20.2 for isolating at least two pairs of slots 21. Each slot accommodates a strand of the shielded electrical cable 4. In other words, the partition walls 20.1, 20.2 enable the separation of the pairs of strands, thereby helping to limit interference and cross-talk between the strands of two pairs of adjacent strands. According to another alternative embodiment, for a socket comprising 4 pairs of slots 21, two partition walls 20.1, 20.2 are constructed, which substantially form a cross. A pair of slots is then positioned in each of the four sectors formed by the crosses. Each pair of strands will then be isolated from the other pair of adjacent strands. In order to limit the space occupied by the strands and to facilitate the insertion of the strands, the two walls 20.1, 20.2 are vertical.

Still referring to fig. 3, the connection module 2 further comprises a joining element 30.1, 30.2 providing at least one electrical contact area 31, 32, 33, 34, 35 in electrical contact with each of the separating walls 20.1, 20.2, the shielding sheath of the cable 4 and the main body 1, respectively.

It will therefore be appreciated that the joining elements 30.1, 30.2 comprise at least one electrical contact area 31, 34 in electrical contact with each separating wall 20.1, 20.2. Similarly, the joining elements 30.1, 30.2 comprise at least one electrical contact area 33, 35 in electrical contact with the body 1. Finally, the joining element 30.1, 30.2 comprises at least one electrical contact area 32 which is in electrical contact with the shielding of the cable 4. The joining element thus makes it possible to shield each pair of strands present in the slot 21 of the connection module 2.

In order to simplify the shape of the joining elements 30.1, 30.2, the joining elements 30.1, 30.2 can surround the connection module 2. Thus, the electrical contact areas 33, 35 between the joining elements 30.1, 30.2 and the body 1 are more easily positioned.

The joining element can be made of two parts 30.1, 30.2. Each section comprises an electrical contact area 31, 34 in electrical contact with all partition walls 20.1, 20.2 to keep each pair of slots 21 shielded. The first portion 30.1 is mounted in the stem 17 of the body 1, for example by means of a plastic insert 36, which plastic insert 36 also covers the connection module 2. The second part 30.2 of the joining element is mounted in the base 16 of the body 1, for example by means of a crimp 37.

The invention has been described above by way of example. It is understood that a person skilled in the art can embody different alternative embodiments of the invention by associating different features employed above, either individually or in combination, for example, without all these embodiments departing from the scope of the invention.
