Black or black brown viscous liquid with pungent odor, which is generated during coal dry distillation, is called tar for short. Coal tar is a complex mixture of high-aromatic hydrocarbons, mostly polycyclic and fused cyclic compounds with or without side chains and heterocyclic compounds containing oxygen, sulfur and nitrogen, and contains a small amount of aliphatic hydrocarbons, naphthenic hydrocarbons and unsaturated hydrocarbons, as well as coal dust, coke dust and pyrolytic carbon. The coal tar just recovered also contains about 5% of water in which various inorganic salts and other impurities are dissolved.

Due to the presence of the finely divided pyrolytic carbon, water tends to form a stable emulsion with the oil. Most of the components of coal tar have high melting points, but because a large amount of monomer compounds are mutually dissolved to form a low eutectic mixture, the coal tar is still in a liquid state at normal temperature. Many of the components of coal tar also constitute a large number of multi-component azeotropic systems, which make distillation separation difficult.

Coal tar is generally used as a raw material for processing and refining to prepare various chemical products, can also be directly utilized, such as a material ingredient of a binder for industrial briquette, formed coke and coal-based activated carbon, and can also be used as a fuel oil, a blast furnace injection fuel, a wood preservative oil and a raw material for burning carbon black.

However, the existing system for producing asphalt by deeply processing coal tar is generally poor in treatment effect, and cannot meet high requirements on the purification, subsequent processing separation and classification of the asphalt produced by coal tar, so that the conditions of low yield and poor quality generally exist when the coal tar is used for producing asphalt products.
