These and other features of the presently disclosed systems and methods will become more readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the following detailed description of the preferred embodiments taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

Drawings

So that those having ordinary skill in the art to which the subject invention pertains will readily understand how to make and use the devices and methods of the subject invention without undue experimentation, preferred embodiments of the invention will be described in detail below with reference to the specific drawings, wherein:

FIG. 1 is a schematic diagram of an ion mobility spectrometer showing a multi-ring ion source;

FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the ion source of FIG. 1 showing a patterned cross-section; and

fig. 3 is a perspective view of the reverse field portion of fig. 1 showing the reverse field ionization disk.

Detailed Description

Reference will now be made to the drawings wherein like reference numerals identify like structural features or aspects of the subject invention. For purposes of explanation and illustration, and not limitation, a partial view of an exemplary embodiment of an ion mobility spectrometer including a multi-ring ion source according to the present invention is shown in fig. 1 and is designated generally by reference numeral 100. As will be described, further embodiments of multi-ring ion sources according to the invention, or aspects thereof, are provided in fig. 2 to 3. The method and system of the present invention can be used to improve ionization of a gas sample.

Referring now to fig. 1-3, an ion mobility spectrometer 100 for analyzing a vapor sample 102 includes a multi-ring ion source 104 for receiving the vapor sample 102, wherein the multi-ring ion source 104 includes a series of rings 106. Each ring 106 in the multi-ring ion source 104 includes an ionosphere 108 on an inner surface 110 thereof to charge at least a portion of the vapor sample 102 and produce an ionized vapor sample 112.

The ion mobility spectrometer 100 includes an electrostatic gate 114 downstream of the multi-ring ion source 104 for receiving a voltage pulse to direct the ionized vapor sample 112 to an analysis region 116 of the ion mobility spectrometer 100. Once in the analysis region 116, the ions of the ionized vapor sample 112 are separated in the electric field based on their mass-to-charge ratios and collision cross-sections. The time of arrival of the ions is measured at the detector and the time of flight is used to determine the ion identity.

Each ring in the series of rings 106 is electrically isolated from each other and is approximately 2 millimeters thick. The series of rings 106 are concentrically arranged in a row and each have an equal diameter. Each ring 106 in the series of rings includes a gap 118 between adjacent rings 106. This arrangement improves the electric field distribution through the ionization region such that ions formed in vapor sample 102 are less likely to be radially dispersed and more likely to reach analysis region 116.

Each ring 106 in the series of rings includes an array of channels 120 therethrough. Each channel 122 in the channel array 120 includes an ionosphere 108. The ionosphere 108 may include a nickel 63 coating or foil or the like. The array of channels 120 may include a honeycomb pattern or a checkerboard pattern or the like. This pattern increases the ionization surface and improves the likelihood that vapor sample 102 is fully ionized.

The ion mobility spectrometer 100 includes a reverse field ionization disk 124 having a diameter equal to or similar to the diameter of the series of rings 106 and located downstream of the multi-ring ion source 104 and upstream of the electrostatic gate. The inverted field ionization plate 124 includes an upstream facing surface 126, the upstream facing surface 126 including an ionosphere 127. The ionosphere 127 may be a nickel coating or foil. Inverted field ionization disk 124 also includes an array of orifices 128 for passing an air buffer gas 130. The ionization disk 124 and the series of rings 106 may be incorporated into an existing spectrometer and replace an existing ionization region. Ion mobility spectrometer 100 can also operate without multi-ring ion source 104 by using a reverse field ionization disk 124.

A method of analyzing a vapor sample 102 using an ion mobility spectrometer 100 comprises: passing vapor sample 102 to a series of ionization rings 106; ionizing the vapor sample 106 using the series of ionizing rings 106 to produce an ionized vapor 112; passing a buffer gas 130 through an ionization disk 124 located downstream of the series of ionization rings 106; and at least a portion of the ionized vapor 112 is passed to an analysis region 116 of the ion mobility spectrometer. The ionization disk 124 directs the beta particles away from the analysis zone 116. The ionization disk 124 includes an ionization surface. This configuration helps to address the early challenges where ionization occurs on the other side of the electrostatic gate. By pointing the ionization surface in an upstream direction, the beta particles are directed away from the analysis zone 116.

The method and system of the present disclosure, as described above and illustrated in the drawings, provide an analytical spectrometer with superior characteristics including increased reliability and stability. While the apparatus and methods of the subject disclosure have been shown and described with reference to embodiments, it will be readily understood by those skilled in the art that changes and/or modifications may be made thereto without departing from the spirit and scope of the subject disclosure.
