Technical Field

The invention relates to a heating device for an air conditioning unit, comprising a docking station for heating electrodes. The invention also relates to an air conditioning unit comprising such a heating device. Finally, the invention relates to a method for mechanically and electrically connecting electrodes of a heating device.

The invention will be particularly applicable in the field of motor vehicles.

Background

Electric heating devices intended to be integrated into vehicle air conditioning units are known. These are either additional radiators in combination with a heating radiator through which the heat transfer fluid flows in vehicles with internal combustion engines, or main radiators in electric or hybrid vehicles.

Such a heating device comprises a heating body which houses a heating unit provided with a heating element supplied with electric current through electrodes. For electrical safety reasons it may be necessary to isolate the heating element and its supply electrodes from the outside. To this end, the heating unit comprises a tube inside which the heating element and its electrodes are located, the inner surface of the tube being provided with an electrically insulating layer to isolate the heating element and its electrodes.

These heating devices comprise a distribution unit capable of controlling the current flowing in the heating unit, in particular via an electronic board.

A switch for controlling the current flowing in the electrode is soldered to the electronic board. Each switch is electrically connected on the one hand to the electronic board and on the other hand to the electrode.

Such double connections are not easy to produce on a production line. In particular, it is not easy to achieve to hold the switch in place to solder it to the electronic board, and the switch may not be oriented exactly in the orientation it should have, and secondly, it is more difficult to connect the electrodes.

In particular, in addition to the electrical connection, a mechanical connection is also produced between each switch and the electronic board, so that all the components are correctly positioned with respect to each other when they are assembled and throughout the entire service life of the heating device.

Disclosure of Invention

The present invention aims to overcome the various drawbacks set forth above by means of a heating device which allows an easy-to-implement electrical and mechanical connection between the heating body and the dispensing unit, and which ensures the correct positioning of all the components when connected and throughout the entire service cycle of the heating device, while limiting the relative movements between the components in order to avoid vibration problems and improve the reliability of the heating device.

This object is achieved by a heating device for an air conditioning unit, which in a conventional manner has a heating body which is supplied with an electric current via a distribution unit in order to heat an air flow passing through the heating body, the heating body comprising a set of tubes containing:

-a heating element through which the current flows;

electrodes on both sides of the heating element for the current supply of the heating element.

The device is primarily characterized in that the dispensing unit comprises a docking station for the electrodes, said docking station having a plurality of receptacles for receiving the electrodes, and in said plurality of receptacles there are mechanical and electrical connection means for mechanically and electrically connecting the electrodes to the dispensing unit.

The main idea of the present invention is to provide a docking station that acts as a bridge between the components belonging to the heating body and the components belonging to the dispensing unit that have to be connected to each other. In this case, the docking station may position the electrodes correctly to connect them. In addition, the docking station allows for the correct positioning of the mechanical and electrical connection means, as will be described later. Thus, the docking station forms a stable base that can be used as a reference for positioning various items.

Various embodiments according to the invention, which may be employed together or separately:

the mechanical and electrical connection means for mechanically and electrically connecting the electrodes to the distribution unit comprise a switch positioned in the housing on the one hand and fixed to an electronic current supply board belonging to the distribution unit on the other hand: thus, the docking station may hold the switches in place, enabling mechanical and electrical connection under optimal conditions.

Each housing has a central hole through which the switch projects, said hole being dimensioned to hold the switch in position when it is fixed to the electronic board.

-each switch has: a first electrical connection face for connection to an electronic board, provided with at least one pin that can be soldered to the board; and a second electrical connection face for connection to an electrode, provided with a female coupling into which the male coupling of the electrode is inserted.

Each electrode has a free end on which the male coupling is located, the male couplings of the two electrodes associated with the heating element being arranged in a five-point shape (quincunx).

For each heating element, the docking station has two housings in the shape of five points matching the arrangement of the male couplings of the two corresponding electrodes.

-inserting the male coupling of the electrode into the female coupling of the switch, said switch having at least one flexible sheet capable of exerting pressure on the male coupling of the electrode to hold it in place and establish an electrical connection.

The male coupling of the electrodes comprises a tab, the switch having a plurality of flexible sheets exerting pressure on both sides of the tab.

Each receptacle has a guide means for guiding the electrode.

The guiding means comprise two posts located on either side of the receptacle and having their opposite faces inclined towards the centre of the receptacle, thereby forming a guiding bevel for the electrode.

The docking station comprises a rod extending over the entire length of the heating body after alignment of the electrodes.

The docking station has as many receptacles as there are electrodes in the heating body, one for each receptacle.

The docking station has two rows of receptacles, the receptacles of one row being offset from the receptacles of the other row.

-the docking station perforates between adjacent receptacles.

The docking station is made of an electrically insulating plastic material.

The docking station has a face facing the electronic board, said face being provided with a longitudinal central rib bearing on the electronic board.

The docking station has, in addition to the ribs, one or more spaces between the docking station and the electronic board, so as to allow the soldering of other components to the electronic board below the docking station.

The invention also relates to an air conditioning unit comprising a heating device as described above.

Furthermore, the invention finally relates to a method for mechanically and electrically connecting the electrodes of a heating device as described above. In this case, the method comprises the steps of:

-positioning the docking station so as to support the electronic board;

-inserting the switches in successive holes provided for this purpose in the docking station and then in the electronic board until they are kept in position;

-soldering the switch to the electronic board;

-simultaneously screwing all the electrodes of the heating body into the corresponding switches in a single translational movement of the heating body with respect to the dispensing unit.

Detailed Description

With reference to fig. 1, the present invention relates to an electric heating device 1. This is, for example, a heating device 1, referred to as high voltage, that is to say intended to be powered by Direct Current (DC) or Alternating Current (AC) at a voltage of more than 60V, in particular in the range from 60V to 1000V, in particular in the range from 180V to 600V, and/or to allow heating power to be output into the air or to consume a power of more than 2kW, in particular in the range from 2kW to 10 kW.

The heating device 1 comprises a heating body 2, which heating body 2 is supplied with an electric current for heating an air flow through the heating body 2.

In this case, the heating body 2 has a substantially parallelepiped conformation extending over the surface. Which is intended to be positioned transversely to the air flow to be heated. More precisely, the air flow is intended to be oriented perpendicularly to the heating body 2, that is to say perpendicularly to the plane of fig. 1.

The heating body 2 is formed by a series of aligned metal tubes 4. Inside each tube 4 is a heating element 8, through which heating element 8 the current flows. The heating element 8 is, for example, a PTC (positive temperature coefficient) effect resistor. These heating elements 8 are particularly visible in fig. 13.

Electrodes 9 are located on both sides of the heating element 8 for the current supply of the heating element. More specifically, each heating element 8 is surrounded by a positive electrode 9 and a negative electrode 9.

In order to electrically insulate the tube 4 from the electrodes 9 and the heating element 8, a layer 12 of electrically insulating and thermally conductive material is positioned between each electrode 9 and the inner wall of the tube 4.

Each assembly of tube 4/heating element 8/electrode 9 forms a so-called heating unit.

The heating unit is selectively supplied with electric current. This is understood to mean that each heating unit is supplied with an electric current independently of the other heating units and can therefore be flowed through by an electric current different from the electric current flowing through the other heating units, in particular in terms of its magnitude. In this case, the current values concerned are in particular the values of the average current or the effective current.

Returning to fig. 1, the heating body 2 may comprise a heat sink 13, for example a fin, in thermal contact with the tube 4. The radiator 13 is located in particular between said tubes 4. For the sake of clarity, only some of the radiators 13 are shown extending from the end pipes 4, so as not to overload fig. 1.

The heating body 2 comprises a frame 5, in particular made of plastic, which houses the heating unit and serves to hold the tube 4. The tube 4 is also held in place by the intermediate plate 22.

Preferably, the heating device 1 further comprises a distribution unit 3 able to control the current flowing in said heating body 2.

The distribution unit 3 is advantageously configured to drive the current supplied to the heating body 2, in particular to the respective heating unit, in particular using the driven switch 15, so that the respective current in each heating unit can be controlled. These switches 15 (visible in figure 4) are mounted on the T-shaped electronic board 11.

Fig. 2 shows the lower surface of the electronic board 11, on which a plurality of pins 7 are soldered. These pins 7 belong to the switch 15.

In order to be able to correctly hold the switch 15 in place when it is fixed to the electronic board 11, a docking station 6 is provided, the docking station 6 being located directly above the upper surface of the electronic board 11. This docking station 6 is visible in particular in fig. 3, wherein the electronic board 11 is not shown for greater clarity.

The docking station 6 is therefore arranged at the junction between the heating body 2 with the heating unit on the one hand and the dispensing unit 3 with its electronic board 11 on the other hand. The docking station 6 comprises an intermediate base which facilitates the electrical and mechanical connection of the heating body 2 to the dispensing unit 3.

As can be seen in fig. 4, this station 6 receives, on one side, an electrode 9 projecting from the tube 4 and, on the other side, a switch 15 that can be welded to the electronic board 11.

More precisely, docking station 6 has a lower surface facing electronic board 11 and an upper surface facing tube 4. The docking station 6 comprises a rod or strip which extends over the entire length of the heating body 2 after the alignment of the electrodes 9 at the outlet of the tube 4.

The lower surface is provided with a central rib 23, which central rib 23 is oriented longitudinally along docking station 6. This rib 23 can rest on the upper surface of the electronic board 11, so that there is a flat contact between the docking station 6 and the electronic board 11. This flat contact makes it possible, firstly, to position docking station 6 in a stable manner above electronic board 11. Furthermore, according to two principles, docking station 6 may improve the mechanical strength of electronic board 11:

increase the overall rigidity of electronic board 11 by virtue of a greater moment of inertia of the electronic board 11/docking station 6 assembly;

by acting as a stop limiting the deformation, i.e. the bending, of the electronic board 11 in the case of excessive vibrations.

Thus, there is a space between docking station 6 and electronic board 11 on both sides of rib 23. Ideally, and if desired, the space is sized to allow soldering of other components to electronic board 11 below docking station 6.

As far as the upper surface shown in fig. 5 to 7 is concerned, there are a plurality of housings 17 housing the electrodes 9, corresponding to the switches 15, and there are mechanical and electrical connection means in the housings for mechanically and electrically connecting the electrodes 9 to the dispensing unit 3. Specifically, each of the accommodating portions 17 has a center hole therein, and the switch 15 is inserted into the center hole.

This switch 15 is shown more particularly in figures 8 to 11. This is a conventional switch 15 having: a first electrical connection face 19 for connection to the electronic board 11, provided with two pins 7 that can be soldered to the board 11; a second electrical connection face 18 for connection to the electrode 9, which is provided with a female coupling serving as a quick connector. In particular, the female coupling has a plurality of flexible sheets 20, the plurality of flexible sheets 20 being able to exert pressure on the electrodes 9 penetrating therein. In this case, there are four flexible sheets 20 supported thereon on both sides of the electrode 9. Positioning the flexible sheet 20 on both sides of the electrode 9 makes it possible to centre the electrode 9 and to keep it in a centred position, unlike a female coupling configuration, in which the flexible sheet 20 is present on only one side of the electrode 9. In addition, as can be seen in particular in fig. 11, each flexible sheet 20 has a zigzag shape, so that it is possible to have a plurality of support points 21 on the electrode 9. In particular, each zigzag point 21 bears on the electrode 9.

Returning to fig. 6, it can be clearly seen that, for each receptacle 17, the guide posts 14 extend in the direction of the tube 4 on both sides of the central hole. The purpose of these posts 14 is to guide the electrode 9 until it is inserted into the switch 15.

According to a possible configuration, for each housing 17, the surfaces 14a of the posts located facing each other are inclined in the direction of the central hole to form a guide slope for guiding the electrode 9 towards the central hole in which the switch 15 is located. These columns 14 thus form V into which the electrodes 9 are inserted. Such guiding of the electrodes 9 makes it possible to improve the assembly between the heating body 2 and the dispensing unit 3.

The faces 14b of the columns 14, which are arranged facing each other between two successive receptacles 17, are oriented perpendicular to the docking station 6.

In general, the docking station 6 has as many receptacles 17 as there are electrodes 9 in the heating body 2, each receptacle 17 accommodating one electrode 9.

More precisely, each electrode 9 has a free end projecting from the tube 4. Each free end has a male coupling 10 that can enter the female coupling of the switch 15. The male coupling 10 may be formed integrally with the electrode 9 or may consist of a separate piece mounted on the electrode 9, as is the case in the example visible in fig. 13 and 14. In this case, the male coupling 10 corresponds to a tab, the first end 10a of which is for example mounted and riveted on the pole 9 and the second end 10b of which enters the female coupling of the switch 15.

For each heating unit, the male couplings 10 of the two electrodes 9 extend in the axial direction of the pipe 4, but with a lateral offset. Thus, the male coupling 10 is positioned in a five-point shape.

Thus, for each tube 4, the docking station 6 has two housings 17 in the shape of five points, matching the arrangement of the male couplings 10 of the two corresponding electrodes 9, one positive and the other negative. In this way, the switches 15 inserted into these receptacles 17 are prevented from being spaced apart from one another, since it is important to observe the separation distance between the switches 15 belonging to the positive current line and the switches 15 belonging to the negative current line.

Thus, as shown in fig. 7, the docking station 6 has two rows 6a, 6b of receptacles 17, with the receptacles 17 of one row 6a being offset from the receptacles 17 of the other row 6 b. One row of the receiving portions 17 is located on a positive current line connected to the positive electrode 9, and the other row is located on a negative current line connected to the negative electrode 9.

The docking station 6 is perforated between adjacent receptacles 17 by windows 16. This makes it possible to use a minimum amount of material and to obtain a light-weight rod.

The docking station 6 is made of an electrically insulating plastic material. Such materials also allow for good resistance to temperature, combustion and moisture.

The docking station 6 is obtained by moulding or by plastic injection.

Specifically, the connection between the heating body 2 and the dispensing unit 3 is made as follows.

The docking station 6 is positioned on the electronic board 11 so that its ribs 23 bear on the upper surface of the electronic board 11. When docking station 6 and plate 11 are correctly positioned with respect to each other, switch 15 is inserted into a housing 17 provided for this purpose, and more precisely into a hole of housing 17. The pin 7 of the switch 15 is then inserted into a small aperture provided for this purpose in the electronic board 11. The switch 15 is then in a stable position in the housing 17 of the docking station 6 and the pins 7 can be soldered to the electronic board 11.

The final step is then to insert the male coupling 10 of the electrode 9 into the switch 15 of the docking station 6. Assuming that a switch 15 is provided facing each male coupling 10, the last step can be performed in a single movement by linear translation of the heating body 2 with respect to the docking station 6.

In particular, this single movement is made possible by means of the guidance of the male coupling 10 via the guiding stud 14 and by means of a quick connector provided on the first connection face 18 of the switch 15. Specifically, it is sufficient to slide the male coupling 10 into the first connection face 18 of the switch 15, and the flexible tabs 20 create the electrical and mechanical connection of the male coupling 10 as they exert pressure thereon, thereby holding it in place.

By this connection, the movement of the electronic board 11 is greatly limited, so that vibration problems can be avoided and the reliability of the electronic board 11 and of the heating device 1 as a whole can be improved.

The invention also relates to an air conditioning unit comprising a heating device 1 as described above. The air conditioning unit comprises a body for the flow of an air flow, inside which the heating device 1 is located.

With respect to the above description, the optimum dimensional relationships for the parts of the invention, to include variations in size, materials, shape, function and manner of operation, assembly and use, are deemed readily apparent and obvious to one skilled in the art, and all relationships equivalent to those illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification are intended to be encompassed by the present invention.
