Technical Field
The present disclosure relates to an extendable tool, and more particularly, to operational aspects of the extendable tool.
Background
Typically, a hand-held machine tool, such as a trimmer, may include a trimmer head coupled to a handle. The handle may be used to hold the manicuring appliance during a manicuring operation. In many cases, the pruning tool may be used in locations that are difficult to access or reach, such as deep in a brush, raised locations above the ground, and the like. In this case, it may be difficult to complete the trimming operation with the required accuracy and quality.
Thus, in some applications, the handle of the manicuring appliance may have an extension feature, such as a telescopic extension. The handle may comprise interconnected telescopic tubes which may be extended or retracted as the case may be, to increase or decrease the overall length of the handle of the trimmer, respectively. The telescopic extension of the handle may be provided by a locking mechanism. The locking mechanism may include a button and a locking bolt. To extend or retract the handle, the user may operate a button that releasably locks the bolt.
This, in turn, may unlock the telescoping tubes, and the user may have to manually extend or retract the telescoping tubes to obtain the desired handle length. Furthermore, the user may have to operate the button again to lock the locking bolt in order to fix the telescopic tubes relative to each other. This can lead to inefficiency and discomfort in the manner of changing the length of the handle. Furthermore, the button may be located at a remote location on the handle, which may make the operation of the button difficult and inconvenient. Accordingly, there is a need for an improved extendable tool or handle for such applications.
Disclosure of Invention
With respect to the above problems, the present invention aims to solve or at least reduce the above disadvantages. This object is at least partly achieved by a bonding tool according to an embodiment of the present invention. The extendable tool includes an outer tube and an inner tube movably disposed within the outer tube. The inner tube includes at least one receiving portion disposed therein. The extendable tool includes a handle portion coupled with the outer tube. The handle portion includes a slot disposed therein. The extendable tool includes a sliding member disposed within the slot. The sliding member is adapted to slide within the slot between a first position and a second position. The extendable tool also includes a locking element disposed in association with each of the outer tube and the inner tube. The locking element is adapted to selectively engage with the at least one receiving portion such that the locking element restricts movement of the inner tube relative to the outer tube. The extendable tool further comprises an engagement member coupled with the sliding member. The engagement member is adapted to slide within the outer tube. The engagement member includes an inclined surface. In the first position of the sliding member, the sliding member actuates the engagement member, engaging the locking element with the at least one receiving portion due to the inclined surface of the engagement member. The sliding member associated with the engagement member and the locking element provides a simple and ergonomic mechanism to selectively lock the extendable tool to a desired length according to operational requirements. The mechanism includes limited moving parts, providing a simple design for the mechanism, which is easy to manufacture and of limited cost.
According to an embodiment of the invention, in the second position of the sliding member, the sliding member actuates the engagement member, whereby the inclined surface of the engagement member disengages the locking element from the at least one receiving portion to allow movement between the outer tube and the inner tube. Thus, the sliding member associated with the engagement member and the locking element provides a simple and ergonomic mechanism to selectively extend or retract the extendable tool a desired length according to operational requirements.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the locking element is a ball. The balls thus provide a simple design of the locking element, which is easily available and easy to manufacture, limiting the costs of the components and the mechanism.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the sliding member is a spring-biased sliding member. Thus, the spring-biased slide member provides a simple and ergonomic slide member that is aesthetically pleasing and easy to operate.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the extendable tool comprises an outer cover arranged on the outer tube. The outer cover includes a retaining portion disposed in association with the locking element. The retaining portion is adapted to limit sliding of the locking element outside the outer tube. In this way, the retaining means provides a stop for limiting the falling of the locking element from the space between the outer tube and the inner tube.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the holding portion is adapted to contact the inclined surface of the engaging member in the first position of the sliding member. In this way, the contact between the holding portion and the engaging member restricts the locking element from falling out of the space between the outer tube and the inner tube.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the extendable tool comprises an inner stop arranged within the outer tube. The inner stop is adapted to engage the inner tube to limit movement of the inner tube within the outer tube. In this way, the inner stop limits the maximum movement of the inner tube within the outer tube during retraction of the extendable tool.
