1. A mattress comprising first and second pocket coil spring sections forming head and tail portions of the mattress, the first and second pocket coil spring sections being connected to one another by a strip of compressible material extending across the mattress, hinge locations being provided for packaging the mattress for transport in use.

2. The mattress of claim 1, wherein the compressible material strip comprises an open cell foam material.

3. A mattress according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the material strips comprise a high density open cell polyurethane foam material.

4. A mattress according to claim 1, 2, or 3, wherein the strip of material extends across substantially the entire width and height of the mattress between the first and second pocket coil spring sections, and the strip of material has a thickness in the range of 2 to 6 centimeters.

5. The mattress of any of claims 1-4, wherein the first and second pocket coil spring sections and the strip of material are compressed, and the first and second pocket coil spring sections are folded one over the other with a folded position along the compressed strip of material.

6. A method of forming and packaging a mattress, for example for transport and/or storage, the method comprising: constructing a first pocket spring mattress core section and a second pocket spring mattress core section; coupling the first and second sections together by a strip of compressible material to form a mattress comprising the coupled first and second mattress core sections; and packaging the mattress for shipping, the packaging the mattress comprising folding the mattress along the strip of compressible material.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the operation of packaging the mattress comprises vacuum compression of the mattress prior to the folding operation.

8. A method according to claim 6 or 7, wherein the operation of wrapping the mattress comprises rolling the folded mattress into a generally cylindrical form.

9. A method of forming a mattress comprising: constructing a first pocket spring mattress core section and a second pocket spring mattress core section; coupling the first and second sections together by a strip of compressible material to form a mattress comprising the coupled first and second mattress core sections; vacuum compressing the mattress; the compressed mattress is folded along the strip of material and the folded compressed mattress is rolled into a generally cylindrical shape.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the operation of rolling the folded compressed mattress comprises coiling the folded compressed mattress such that a coiling axis is transverse to a fold of the mattress.

11. A mattress formed by the method of any one of claims 6 to 10.

12. The mattress of claim 11, wherein the compressible material strip comprises a high density open cell polyurethane foam material.

13. The mattress of claim 11 or 12, wherein the compressible material strip extends across substantially an entire width and height of the mattress between the first and second pocket spring mattress core sections, and the compressible material strip has a thickness in a range of 2 centimeters to 6 centimeters.
