(The present invention relates to topical compositions comprising erythrulose and hydroxyacetophenone, as well as the use of said topical compositions for preventing and/or treating the afflictions associated with maladies of Malassezia yeast, Propionibacterium acnes and for preventing moulds such as in particular Aspergillus brasiliensis.)

1. A topical composition comprising erythrulose and hydroxyacetophenone, wherein the amount of hydroxyacetophenone is selected from the range of about 0.01% to 2% by weight, preferably 0.1% to 1% by weight, most preferably 0.1% to 0.6% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition.

2. The topical composition according to claim 1, wherein the amount of erythrulose is selected from the range of about 0.005 to 5 wt. -%, more preferably from the range of about 0.01 to 3 wt. -%, most preferably from the range of 0.025 to 2 wt. -%, based on the total weight of the composition.

3. The topical composition of claim 1 or 2, wherein the hydroxyacetophenone is p-hydroxyacetophenone.

4. The topical composition of any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the composition is a cosmetic or pharmaceutical composition.

5. The topical composition of claim 4, wherein the composition is a shampoo preparation, a hair conditioner, an O/W emulsion, a W/O emulsion, or a gel.

6. The topical composition of any one of claims 1 or 5, wherein the composition further comprises water and at least one agent selected from the group consisting of surfactants, emulsifiers, thickeners, and oils.

7. A method of treating skin and/or scalp comprising the step of contacting the skin and/or scalp with a topical composition according to any one of claims 1 to 6.

8. The method according to claim 7, for treating, preventing and/or preventing skin itch and/or for maintaining healthy skin homeostasis and/or for maintaining skin microbiome balance.

9. Use of a topical composition according to any one of claims 1 to 6 for preventing or treating skin itch and/or for maintaining healthy skin homeostasis and/or for maintaining skin microbiome balance.

10. The topical composition according to any one of claims 1 to 6 for use in the treatment, prevention and/or prophylaxis of Malassezia yeast, preferably Malassezia furfur-induced diseases and/or disorders.

11. The topical composition of claim 10, wherein the disease and/or condition is selected from the group consisting of: pityriasis versicolor, dandruff formation, seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis.

12. The topical composition according to any one of claims 1 to 6 for use in the treatment, prevention and/or prophylaxis of acne.

13. A method of killing and/or inhibiting Malassezia yeast, in particular Malassezia furfur, Propionibacterium acnes, and/or a mould, such as in particular Aspergillus brasiliensis, the method comprising contacting the yeast, p.acnes and/or mould with a combination of erythrulose and hydroxyacetophenone.

14. Use of a combination of erythrulose and hydroxyacetophenone as an antimicrobial agent against Malassezia yeast, such as Malasseziafurfur in particular, and/or against moulds, such as Aspergillus brasiliensis in particular.

15. Use of a combination of erythrulose and hydroxyacetophenone for inhibiting the growth of Aspergillus brasiliensis, preferably in a product selected from the group consisting of a cosmetic composition, a household item, a plastic, a paper and/or a coating, most preferably for improving preservation compared to a product not comprising the combination of erythrulose and hydroxyacetophenone.

Example 1: antimicrobial efficacy

Active ingredients: erythrulose from DSM Nutritional products from Symrise

H (p-hydroxyacetophenone)

Antimicrobial efficacy was evaluated similarly to the modulated challenge test method (NF EN ISO 11930). Thus, under sterile conditions, solutions of each active in physiological serum with 0.85 wt% NaCl were prepared at the concentrations shown in the table below. The solution of one or more actives was then placed in a 96-deep well plate (1.6 ml/well). The wells were contaminated with Malassezia furfur, Propionibacterium acnes or Aspergillus brasiliensis to obtain the initial contamination outlined in Table 1, Table 2 and Table 3. After contamination, each well was mixed thoroughly to ensure uniform distribution of the microorganisms. Each plate was then incubated at22 ℃ for 24 h. The (remaining) population was counted 24 hours after contamination. The results are summarized in the following table.

Table 1: results obtained using Malassezia furfur

Figure BDA0002354672930000132

Δ ═ 100 ({ microbial count at t ═ 0h } - { microbial count at t ═ 24 }/{ microbial count at t ═ 0 })/e

0.4% by weight of active substance

As can be seen from the above table, erythrulose at a concentration of 0.5% does not have any antifungal effect on Malassazia furfu, which would result in a reduction of Malassazia furfu. However, erythrulose, when combined with p-hydroxyacetophenone, enhances the efficacy of p-hydroxyacetophenone against Malasseziafurfur.

Table 2: results obtained with Propionibacterium acnes

Figure BDA0002354672930000141

0.4% by weight of active substance

Δ ═ 100 ({ microbial count at t ═ 0h } - { microbial count at t ═ 24 }/{ microbial count at t ═ 0 })/e

As can be seen from table 2, the combination of erythrulose and p-hydroxyacetophenone is highly active against p.acnes.

Table 2: results obtained using Aspergillus brasiliensis

0.4% by weight of active substance

Corresponds to 0.2% by weight of active

(the term "log reduction" is a well-known mathematical term used to denote the relative number of cells, bacteria, microorganisms, etc., reduced in or on something, e.g., 2log reduction denotes a 100-fold reduction in the number of microorganisms and 3log reduction denotes a 1000-fold reduction in the number of microorganisms).

As can be seen in table 3, the combination of erythrulose and hydroxyacetophenone showed a synergistic effect against aspergillus brasiliensis.
