When the root canal is under-filled, periapical tissue fluid and exudate can seep back to the unfilled root canal, and the decomposition and propagation of the exudate can cause reinfection and failure of root canal therapy. Therefore, it is important to determine the length and taper dimensions of the gutta percha point prior to root filling.
