1. A seal, comprising:

a metal annular body having an inner diameter and an outer diameter, the annular body comprising:

a body portion, the body portion comprising:

a first lip extending axially from the body portion, the first lip

a second lip extending radially from the body portion toward the outer diameter, the second lip adapted to provide an axial seal.

2. An assembly, comprising:

a valve having an axis, first and second valve covers, and a valve stem extending axially through the first and second valve covers; and

a seal, the seal comprising: a metal annular body having an inner diameter and an outer diameter, the annular body comprising: a body portion, the body portion comprising: a first lip extending axially from the body portion, the first lip adapted to provide a radial seal; and a second lip extending radially from the body portion toward the outer diameter, the second lip adapted to provide an axial seal.

3. A method, comprising:

providing a valve having an axis, first and second valve covers, and a valve stem extending axially through the first and second valve covers;

providing a seal, the seal comprising: a metal annular body having an inner diameter and an outer diameter, the annular body comprising: a body portion, the body portion comprising: a first lip extending axially from the body portion, the first lip adapted to provide a radial seal; and a second lip extending radially from the body portion toward the outer diameter, the second lip adapted to provide an axial seal; and

positioning the seal in contact with at least one of the valve stem and the bonnet to seal the valve stem and at least one of the bonnet and the valve stem in an axial direction and a radial direction relative to the seal.

4. The seal, assembly or method of any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein at least one of the first lip or the second lip is integral with the body portion.

5. The seal, assembly or method of claim 4, wherein at least one of the first lip or the second lip is metal.

6. The seal, assembly or method of claim 5, wherein the metal comprises nickel, iron or a chromium alloy.

7. The seal, assembly or method of any of claims 1-3, wherein the metal of the annular body comprises nickel, iron or a chromium alloy.

8. The seal, assembly, or method of any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the first lip or the second lip comprises an axial deflection force in a range of about 300N/mm to about 10N/mm.

9. The seal, assembly or method of any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the first lip extends radially beyond the inner diameter of the body portion.

10. The seal, assembly or method of any of claims 1-3, wherein the body portion has a nominal axial thickness and the second lip extends radially beyond the nominal axial thickness of the body portion.

11. The seal, assembly or method of any of claims 2 to 3, wherein the first lip is adapted to resiliently and plastically deflect in the radial direction upon assembly and contact with the valve stem.

12. The seal, assembly or method of any of claims 2-3, wherein the second lip is adapted to elastically and plastically deflect in the axial direction upon assembly and contact with at least one of the first or second valve covers.

13. The seal, assembly or method of any of claims 1-3, wherein the seal further comprises an inner radial piece made of a different material than the annular body, the inner radial piece extending to and being exposed along the inner diameter of the seal.

14. The seal, assembly or method of claim 13, wherein the inner radial component comprises a lubricious metal or polymer.

15. The seal, assembly or method of any of claims 1-3, wherein the body further comprises a recess axially adjacent the second lip.

Technical Field

The present disclosure relates to seals and seal assemblies, and more particularly to seals having a sealing lip.

Background

Typically, valves are used to prevent or facilitate fluid flow through an assembly having a housing or chamber. In some cases, the valve may use a seal or seal assembly to prevent leakage, withstand pressure, contain a desired substance within the housing, or exclude contamination within the housing. In certain specific cases, valves may be used under harsh operating conditions, such as subsea valves having extreme or harsh temperatures and pressures. In such cases, the valve requires greater reliability to withstand these conditions without suffering excessive friction or wear.

There remains a need for a seal assembly having improved sealing performance and higher reliability under harsh operating conditions.
