The method comprises the following steps in any order: connecting a first pole (17) of the solar generator (3) to the first connection point (11) when the isolation relay (9) is closed (step 21); connecting a second pole (18) of the solar generator (3) to the first connection point (11) when the isolation relay (9) is closed (step 22); -generating an alternating voltage at the first connection point (11) by means of the inverter bridge (6) when the isolation relay (9) is closed (step 23); and generating the alternating voltage at the first connection point (11) by the inverter bridge (6) when the isolation relay (9) is open (step 24). A functional test of the isolation relay (9) is performed by comparing the magnitude of the test voltage between steps 23 and 24. The invention further relates to an inverter (2) designed to carry out the method.)
