1. A resealable packaging leaflet bag comprising:

a back sheet;

a front panel attached to the back panel at respective side and bottom edges to form a bottom of the pocket between the back panel and the front panel such that the top edge of the back panel extends beyond the top edge of the front panel to form an opening of the pocket;

a protective lip attached to the back sheet at respective top edges and such that side edges of the protective lip are attached to upper portions of side edges of the back sheet to form a protective lip over an opening of the pocket, wherein a bottom edge of the protective lip covers a top edge of the front sheet and forms a top of the pocket between the back sheet and the protective lip;

the flip cover sheet is connected to the protective lip sheet such that a portion of the protective lip sheet is located between the flip cover sheet and the back sheet; and

an adhesive strip located on an outer surface of the front panel proximate the bottom edge of the protective lip, such that the adhesive strip is configured to secure the bottom of the flap to the front panel to form a resealable closure over the opening of the pocket and the protective lip.

2. The resealable packaging manifest bag of claim 1 further comprising an adhesive coating on the outer surface of the back sheet.

3. The resealable packaging manifest bag of claim 2 further comprising a release liner attached to the outer surface of the back sheet by an adhesive coating such that the release liner is removable.

4. The resealable packaging manifest bag of claim 1, wherein the adhesive strip is comprised of a pressure sensitive material.

5. The resealable packaging bag of claim 4 wherein the pressure sensitive material is acrylic, natural rubber or synthetic rubber.

6. The resealable package manifest bag of claim 1, wherein the back sheet, front sheet, protective lip sheet and flap sheet are made of flexible plastic.

7. The resealable packaging manifest bag of claim 6, wherein the flexible plastic is polyethylene.

8. The resealable packaging manifest bag of claim 6, wherein the flexible plastic is transparent.

9. The resealable package manifest bag of claim 1, wherein the back sheet, front sheet, protective lip sheet and flip top sheet are attached by heat sealing.

10. The resealable package manifest bag of claim 1, wherein the front sheet, back sheet, protective lip sheet and flip sheet are attached by a permanent adhesive.

11. The resealable packaging drape bag of claim 10 wherein the permanent adhesive is an acrylic adhesive or a hot melt adhesive.

12. A method of manufacturing a resealable packaging booklet bag, the method comprising:

forming a back sheet, a front sheet, a flap sheet and a protective lip sheet from a flexible plastic material;

forming a pocket by attaching the front panel to the back panel at respective side and bottom edges such that a top edge of the back panel extends beyond a top edge of the front panel to form an opening of the pocket;

attaching a protective lip to the back sheet at one end and fixing a side edge of the protective lip to an upper portion of the side edge of the back sheet to form a protective lip over an opening of the pocket, wherein a bottom edge of the protective lip covers a top edge of the front sheet;

attaching the flip cover sheet to the protective lip sheet such that a portion of the protective lip sheet is located between the flip cover sheet and the back sheet; and

an adhesive strip is placed on an outer surface of the front panel proximate the bottom edge of the protective lip such that the adhesive strip is configured to secure the bottom of the flap to the front panel to form a resealable closure over the opening of the pocket and the protective lip.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

forming an adhesive coating on an outer surface of the back sheet; and

the placement pad is attached to the outer surface of the back sheet by an adhesive coating such that the placement pad is removable.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein the flexible plastic is polyethylene.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein the back sheet, the front sheet, the protective lip sheet, and the flip sheet are attached by heat sealing.

16. A resealable packaging leaflet bag comprising:

a back sheet and a front sheet connected to form a pocket such that a top edge of the back sheet extends beyond a top edge of the front sheet to form an opening of the pocket;

a protective lip sheet having one end connected to the back sheet to form a protective lip on the opening of the pocket;

a flap sheet connected to the protective lip; and

adhesive tape configured to secure the bottom of the flap to the front panel to form a resealable closure over the opening of the pocket.

17. The resealable packaging single bag of claim 16 wherein the bottom of the protective lip covers the top edge of the front panel.

18. The resealable packaging single bag of claim 16 wherein the adhesive strip is located on the outer surface of the front panel proximate the bottom edge of the protective lip.

19. The resealable packaging booklet bag of claim 16, wherein adhesive strips are located on the inner surface of the flap sheet near the bottom edge of the flap sheet.

20. The resealable packaging manifest bag of claim 16, further comprising a release liner attached to an outer surface of the packaging manifest bag by an adhesive coating such that the release liner is removable.

Background

Resealable package manifest bags may be used in logistics shipping as a vehicle for containing shipping documents while attaching the bags to the packages as they travel through the dispensing passage. Due to the harshness of the shipping environment, the seal may be rubbed open and/or torn, which may result in loss and/or damage to the shipping documents.

Disclosure of Invention

The present description relates to resealable packaging of sheet bags. More particularly, some embodiments of the present description relate to resealable, self-attaching packaging manifest bags that are particularly adapted to receive and contain shipping documents and attach to a receiving surface, such as a box, carton or other container. Some embodiments include a protective lip forming a portion of the pocket and providing a redundant barrier in addition to the resealable flap to accommodate shipping documents placed within the pocket.

In general, the innovative aspects of the subject matter described in this specification can be embodied in resealable package inventory bags that include a back sheet and a front sheet attached to the back sheet at respective side and bottom edges to form a pocket between the back sheet and the front sheet such that the top edge of the back sheet extends beyond the top edge of the front sheet to form an opening for the pocket. The resealable package inventory bag may also include a protective lip attached to the back sheet at the respective top edge. The protective lip is attached to the back sheet such that a side edge of the protective lip is connected to an upper portion of a side edge of the back sheet to form the protective lip over the opening of the pocket, wherein a bottom edge of the protective lip covers a top edge of the front sheet. The resealable package inventory bag may further include a flap sheet attached to the top edge of the protective lip such that the top edge of the protective lip is located between the top edge of the flap sheet and the top edge of the back sheet; and an adhesive strip located on an outer surface of the front panel proximate the bottom edge of the protective lip, such that the adhesive strip is configured to secure the bottom of the flap to the front panel to form a resealable closure over the opening of the pocket and the protective lip.

In another general aspect, the innovative aspects of the subject matter described in this specification can be embodied in a method that includes forming the back sheet, front sheet, flap sheet, and protective lip from a flexible plastic material. The pocket is formed by attaching the front panel to the back panel at respective side and bottom edges such that the top edge of the back panel extends beyond the top edge of the front panel to form an opening of the pocket. Attaching a protective lip to the back sheet at the respective top edges and securing the side edges of the protective lip to the upper portion of the side edges of the back sheet to form a protective lip over the opening of the pocket, wherein the bottom edge of the protective lip covers the top edge of the front sheet. The flap sheet is attached to the top edge of the protective lip sheet such that the top edge of the protective lip sheet is located between the top edge of the flap sheet and the top edge of the back sheet. An adhesive strip is placed on an outer surface of the front panel proximate the bottom edge of the protective lip such that the adhesive strip is configured to secure the bottom of the flap to the front panel to form a resealable closure over the opening of the pocket and the protective lip.

These and other embodiments may each optionally include one or more of the following features.

Some embodiments may include an adhesive coating on the outer surface of the backsheet and a release liner attached to the outer surface of the backsheet by the adhesive coating such that the release liner is removable.

Some embodiments may include pressure sensitive materials, such as acrylic, natural rubber, and/or synthetic rubber, to form the adhesive tape.

Some embodiments may include a back sheet, a front sheet, a protective lip sheet, and a flap sheet formed of a flexible plastic (e.g., polyethylene), which may be a transparent material.

Some embodiments may include attaching the front sheet, back sheet, protective lip sheet, and flip sheet by heat sealing or permanent adhesive (e.g., acrylic adhesive or hot melt adhesive).

Particular embodiments of the subject matter described in this specification can be implemented to realize one or more of the following advantages. Embodiments may increase efficiency within a distribution aisle for sending and receiving goods by increasing the likelihood that a transport document remains with the corresponding goods throughout the journey through the aisle. Embodiments may improve the performance of resealable packaging sheets used in dispensing channels. Embodiments may reduce cargo loss within the distribution channel.

The details of one or more implementations of the subject matter described in this specification are set forth in the accompanying drawings and the description below. Other features, aspects, and advantages of the subject matter will become apparent from the description, the drawings, and the claims.

Detailed Description

Distribution aisles for sending and receiving goods typically use transportation documents to route, sort and track the various goods that flow through the aisles. Shipping documents include, for example, air bills of lading, shipping labels, invoices, packing lists, and other documents relating to the goods. The shipping documents are placed within bags that are attached to a receiving surface, such as a package, box, carton or other container, for shipping through the passageway. To ensure proper sorting, tracking, import/export and final delivery, it is important to keep the transport documents together with the goods throughout the entire journey through the aisles.

During transport, the bags may be opened and closed (i.e., resealed) multiple times before the goods reach the final destination (particularly for international goods). For example, the shipping documents may be removed from the bags, one at a time, by the carrier at various points of operation for shipping through the aisles, and/or by customs personnel at export and import ports. At the destination, the recipient opens the bag and removes the shipping document. Thus, the bag may employ a resealable flap or cover to provide a means of accessing the shipping documents.

Such resealable flaps may fail during shipping because, for example, the flap is rubbed open (i.e., unsealed) or the flap is completely torn from the pouch. The failure may be due to movement of the container containing the goods and/or interaction with other containers and sorting equipment (e.g., conveyors and slides). If the flap fails, the shipping documents within the bag may slip out of the open bag, which may result in the goods being incorrectly sorted, lost, kept at customs, and/or delayed delivery.

Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to resealable packaging manifest bags (i.e., package inventory envelopes). More particularly, embodiments of the present description relate to resealable, self-attaching packaging manifest bags that are particularly adapted to receive and contain shipping documents and attach to a receiving surface. Embodiments include a protective lip forming a portion of the pocket and providing a redundant barrier in addition to the resealable flap to accommodate shipping documents placed within the pocket. The protective lip provides a series of mechanical, safety and passive protection to the opening of the pocket and prevents transport documents placed in the pocket from sliding out through the opening when the closure produced by sealing the resealable flap fails.

In some embodiments, the resealable package booklet includes two panels or sheets, a resealable flap and a protective lip. These components are made of thin, flexible materials and are heat sealed or otherwise adhered to one another to form pockets for the placement of shipping documents. The protective lip is attached to the back panel such that a lower portion of the protective lip covers the top panel directly below the pocket opening. The front flap is attached to a protective lip at the top edge of the package booklet pouch. An adhesive material (e.g., a pressure sensitive material or a contact sensitive material), which may be in the form of a strip, is applied to a portion of the top surface of the top panel. The flap may be sealed, opened, and then resealed to the top surface of the top panel by an adhesive material. When sealed to the top surface of the top panel, the flap extends from the attachment edge to cover the protective lip, the opening of the pocket, and a portion of the top panel. A lacquer material, such as silicon, may be applied to the bottom surface of the flip to prevent transfer of adhesive material between the top surface of the top panel and the bottom surface of the flip. In addition, a coating of adhesive material is applied to the rear surface of the rear panel and is used to attach the invoice bag to the receiving surface. One or more removable release liners are attached to the back panel by the coating of adhesive material and can be removed to attach the manifest bag to the receiving surface by the coating of adhesive material.

Turning to the drawings, fig. 1,2 and 3 show a front view of a preferred embodiment of a resealable packaging bag 100, fig. 4 shows a perspective view of the front side of the preferred embodiment, fig. 5 and 6 show a rear view of the preferred embodiment, fig. 7 shows a perspective view of the rear side of the preferred embodiment, and fig. 8 and 9 show a side view of the preferred embodiment of the resealable packaging bag.

Resealable package manifest bag 100 comprises four plastic sheets (flap 110, protective lip 120, front sheet 130 and back sheet 150), adhesive strip 140, backing adhesive 160 and release liners 170 and 172. In a preferred embodiment, these plastic sheets are at least partially made of a transparent (or translucent) flexible plastic. Preferred plastic materials include polyethylene, polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). In various embodiments, the protective lip sheet 120, the front sheet 130, the back sheet 150, and the flap sheet 110 are made of polyethylene film.

The back sheet 150 and the front sheet 130 are joined at their respective side and bottom edges to form a bottom 182 of the pocket 180 between the back sheet 150 and the front sheet 130. The bottom 182 of the pocket 180 is formed such that the top edge 152 of the back sheet 150 extends beyond the top edge 132 of the front sheet 130 to form an opening 188 (see fig. 4).

The protective lip 120 and the back sheet 150 are connected at their respective top edges. In addition, the side edges of the protective lip 120 are connected to the tops of the respective side edges of the back sheet 150 and the tops of the respective side edges of the back sheet 130. The bottom 124 of the protective lip 120 covers the top edge 132 of the front panel 130 and extends just below the opening 188. The protective lip 120 and back sheet 150 form the top 184 of the pocket 180.

The flip cover sheet 110 and the protective lip 120 are connected at their respective top edges such that the top edge of the protective lip 110 is located between the top edge of the flip cover sheet 120 and the top edge of the bottom sheet 150. Resealable adhesive strip 140 is adhered to the outer surface of front panel 130 proximate bottom edge 122 of protective lip 120. The bottom of flap 110 may be sealed to front panel 130 by resealable adhesive tape 140. When sealed to front panel 130 by resealable adhesive strip 140, flap 110 forms a closure over opening 188 (see fig. 1,2,4 and 8) and extends from the top edge of resealable packaging bag 100 to cover protective lip 120, opening 188 and the top of front panel 120. The sealed packaged manifest bag 100 (see fig. 2) can be opened by peeling the flap sheet 110 and breaking the seal between the flap sheet 110 and the front sheet 130 along the adhesive strip 140. The shipping documents may then be inserted into the pockets 180 through the openings 188. The packaged manifest bag 100 can then be resealed by applying pressure to the bottom of the flap 110 along the resealable adhesive strip 140.

In various embodiments, as described above, the connections formed between the respective edges of the four plastic sheets (flap 110, protective lip 120, front sheet 130 and back sheet 150) of resealable package booklet bag 100 are created by heat sealing. Heat sealing is a process of bonding materials together by applying heat and pressure together. In the preferred embodiment shown in fig. 1-9, the overlapping edges of the plastic sheets are aligned. Pressure and heat are applied near the edges to be bonded using heating elements that melt the plastic and merge the plastic sheets together. Various machines for performing heat sealing may be used and operated by AC or DC power.

In other embodiments, the connections between the four plastic sheets of the resealable packaging bag 100 are formed by permanent adhesives or a combination of heat sealing and permanent adhesives. Preferred permanent adhesives include acrylic adhesives and hot melt adhesives. A primary characteristic distinguishing permanent adhesives from resealable adhesives (e.g., for forming the resealable adhesive strips 140, see below) is that once the bond of the permanent adhesive is broken, the adhesive no longer functions as an adhesive (i.e., the permanent adhesive is not resealable). Moreover, the bond strength of permanent adhesives is typically much higher than that of resealable adhesives. For example, the bond strength of permanent adhesives is much higher than the force required to open the resealable adhesive without failure, separation, or peeling.

The resealable adhesive strip 140 is preferably deposited in a width of between 0.25 inches and 0.50 inches in a strip as shown in fig. 2-4, although other dimensions may be used. The resealable adhesive strip 140 may be made of a pressure sensitive or contact adhesive material, such as acrylic, natural and/or synthetic rubber. Preferably, the material used to form the resealable adhesive strip 140 has sufficient peel strength, which is the average load per unit width of the adhesive line required to separate the adhesive material (e.g., front panel 130 and flap 110), wherein the separation angle is 180 degrees. In a preferred embodiment, the resealable adhesive strip 140 has sufficient adhesive strength to withstand the rough shipping environment to prevent the flap 110 from being frictionally opened and/or torn. At the same time, the flap 110 can still be opened under the normal efforts of the person needing to open the resealable packaging bag 100 (i.e., the force required to separate the flap 110 from the front panel 130 along the resealable adhesive strip 140 does not damage or cause the plastic to tear). The material used to form the resealable adhesive strip 140 leaves little or no residue on the bottom surface of the flip top sheet 110 after each opening and resealing of the resealable packaging single serve bag 100. The bottom surface of the flip sheet 130 adhered to the resealable adhesive tape 140 may be coated with a lacquer material, such as silicone, to prevent the adhesive from transferring from the top surface of the front sheet 130 to the bottom surface of the flip sheet 110.

In an alternative embodiment, an adhesive tape release liner (not shown in the figures) may be attached to the adhesive tape 140. The adhesive tape release liner may be formed from a paper material coated with a release agent such as silicone. By sealing the flap 110 to the front panel 130 via the exposed adhesive tape 140, the adhesive tape release liner will be removed prior to closing the resealable packaging bag 100.

In various embodiments, the resealable adhesive tape 140 may be a double-sided tape (i.e., a plastic tape/carrier) having a permanent adhesive, such as an acrylic adhesive or a hot melt adhesive, on one side and a resealable adhesive on the other side. In such embodiments, the permanent adhesive side of the tape may be adhered to the outer surface of the front panel 130 proximate the bottom edge 122 of the protective lip 120, leaving a resealable adhesive side to form a resealable closure with the flap 110.

In an alternative embodiment, resealable adhesive strip 140 may be adhered to the bottom surface of flip sheet 110, and a lacquer material applied to the outer surface of front sheet 130. In other alternative embodiments, adhesive tape (e.g., adhesive tape 140) may be applied to both surfaces (i.e., the outer surface of front panel 130 and the bottom surface of flip panel 110).

The backing adhesive 160 may be coated on the outside of the backsheet 150 (see fig. 6), and preferably covers most, if not all, of the outside of the backsheet 150. In an alternative embodiment, the backing adhesive 160 is applied along an edge or strip on the outside of the backsheet 150. The backing adhesive 160 is formed of an adhesive material such as a hot melt adhesive.

Release liners 170 and 172 are attached to the outer surface of the backsheet 150 by the backing adhesive 160 to cover and protect the backing adhesive 160 until the resealable packaging manifest bag 100 is ready for attachment to a receiving surface (see fig. 5-9). The release liners 170 and 172 may be formed from a paper material coated with a release agent such as silicone. The release liners 170 and 172 can be removed, at which point the resealable packaging manifest bag 100 can be attached to a receiving surface of a shipping container (e.g., package, envelope, or box) using the backing adhesive 160. In an alternative embodiment, a single release liner (i.e., a single sheet of paper material coated with a release agent such as silicone) may be used for both release liners 170 and 172.

In an alternative embodiment, the bottom edge of the protective lip is near or against the top of the front panel (i.e., at the opening of the pocket) so that the bottom of the protective lip does not cover the opening of the formed pocket. In other alternative embodiments, a resealable packaged manifest bag having front and back panels of equal or nearly equal size is formed by joining the respective top, bottom and side edges. In these embodiments, an opening is formed in the front panel by, for example, slitting or cutting between the top edge of the front panel and the adhesive tape. The opening extends from one side edge adjacent the front belt to the other side edge.

While this specification contains many specific implementation details, these should not be construed as limitations on the scope of any invention or of what may be claimed, but rather as descriptions of features specific to particular embodiments of the invention. Certain features that are described in this specification in the context of separate embodiments can also be implemented in combination in a single embodiment. Conversely, various features that are described in the context of a single embodiment can also be implemented in multiple embodiments separately or in any suitable subcombination. Furthermore, although features may be described above as acting in certain combinations and even initially claimed as such, one or more features from a claimed combination can in some cases be excised from the combination, and the claimed combination may be directed to a subcombination or variation of a subcombination.
