1. An aqueous curable binder composition comprising starting materials required to form a thermoset resin when cured, and a matrix polymer, wherein the starting materials required to form a thermoset resin when cured comprise (ia) a polyhydroxy component and a polycarboxylic acid component, or anhydride, ester or salt derivatives of a polycarboxylic acid component, and/or (ib) a reaction product of a polyhydroxy component and a polycarboxylic acid component, or anhydride, ester or salt derivatives of a polycarboxylic acid component, or (ii) a carbohydrate component and a nitrogen-containing component and/or a reaction product of a carbohydrate component and a nitrogen-containing component, wherein the matrix polymer comprises from 2 to 20% of the dry weight of the binder composition, and wherein the matrix polymer is selected from the group consisting of alginate, chitosan, polyurethane, polyester, aliphatic isocyanate oligomer, polyazetidinePolymers, copolymers thereof and mixtures thereof.

2. The aqueous curable binder composition of claim 1 wherein the polycarboxylic acid component is selected from the group consisting of monomeric and polymeric polycarboxylic acids.

The aqueous curable binder composition of claim 2 wherein the polycarboxylic acid component is a monomeric polycarboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of dicarboxylic acids including unsaturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, aromatic dicarboxylic acids, unsaturated cyclic dicarboxylic acids, saturated cyclic dicarboxylic acids, or tricarboxylic acids including unsaturated aliphatic tricarboxylic acids, saturated aliphatic tricarboxylic acids, aromatic tricarboxylic acids, unsaturated cyclic tricarboxylic acids, saturated cyclic tricarboxylic acids, and mixtures thereof.

4. The aqueous curable adhesive composition of claim 1 wherein the salt derivative of the polycarboxylic acid component is an ammonium salt.

The aqueous curable binder composition of any preceding claim wherein the polyhydroxy component is a monosaccharide selected from its aldose or ketose forms, including trioses, tetroses, pentoses, hexoses, heptoses; or an oligosaccharide or polysaccharide; or obtaining one or more reducing sugar components in situ; or a carbohydrate component of a combination thereof.

6. The aqueous curable binder composition of claim 1 wherein the nitrogen-containing component is an ammonium salt of an inorganic acid selected from the group consisting of phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid and carbonic acid.

7. The aqueous curable binder composition of claim 1, wherein the nitrogen-containing component is selected from polyamine functional compounds containing primary and/or secondary and/or tertiary and/or quaternary amine functional groups.

8. The aqueous curable binder composition of claim 7 wherein the polyamine-functional compound has the formula H2N-Q-NH2Wherein Q is alkylene, cycloalkylene, heteroalkylene, or cycloheteroalkylene, each of which is optionally substituted.

The aqueous curable binder composition of claim 7 wherein the polyamine-functional compound is selected from the group consisting of diamines, triamines, tetramines, and pentamines selected from the following: 1, 6-diaminohexane and l, 5-diamino-2-methylpentane, diethylenetriamine, 1-piperazineethane and bis (hexamethylene) triamine, triethylenetetramine, tetraethylenepentamine, polyethyleneimine PEI, polyvinylamine, polyetheramine, polylysine.

The aqueous curable binder composition of claim 1 wherein the matrix polymer is selected from the group consisting of cellulose derivatives including, carboxymethyl cellulose CMC, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose NaCMC, hydroxypropyl cellulose HPC, 2-hydroxyethyl cellulose HEC; nanocellulose, polyvinyl acetate PVAc, aliphatic isocyanate oligomer, chitosan, azetidiniumA polymer or a mixture thereof.

11. The aqueous curable binder composition of claim 1 wherein the matrix polymer exhibits a range of 500 daltons Da to 2x106Molecular weight of Da.

12. The aqueous curable binder composition of claim 1, wherein the dry weight ratio of carbohydrate to ammonium salt of inorganic or polycarboxylic acid or polyamine functional compound ranges from 2 to 35.

13. The aqueous curable adhesive composition of claim 1, further comprising dyes, antifungal agents, antibacterial agents, hydrophobes, silicone-containing coupling agents, and/or other additives known in the art for use in such adhesive compositions.

The aqueous curable binder composition of claim 1 wherein one component is selected microparticles or nanoparticles derived from natural or synthetic polymers or combinations thereof, or selected microparticles or nanoparticles derived from inorganic materials, or nanoclays and/or mixtures thereof.

15. The aqueous curable binder composition of claim 14, wherein the micro-or nanoparticles are nanocellulose, or MgO, CaO, Al2O3Or CaCO4Or montmorillonite, bentonite, kaolinite, hectorite and halloysite and other organically modified nanoclays, or mixtures thereof.

16. An assembly of fibres or particles bonded with an aqueous curable binder composition according to any preceding claim or a binder obtained by curing a curable binder composition according to any preceding claim.

17. The fiber assembly of claim 16, which is an insulation product.

18. The fiber assembly of claim 17, wherein the insulation product is a mineral wool felt.

19. The assembly of particles of claim 16 which is a composite wood board.

20. The particle assembly of claim 19, wherein the composite wood board is selected from the group consisting of wood fiber board, wood particle board, and plywood.

21. A method of manufacturing an assembly of fibres or particles according to any one of claims 16 to 20, characterised in that it comprises: subsequent or simultaneous application of the relevant components of the aqueous curable binder composition according to any one of claims 1 to 15, or of the aqueous binder composition according to any one of claims 1 to 15, to a collection of fibres or particles; collecting the coated fibers or particles within the assembly; and curing, thereby causing the components of the aqueous curable binder composition to react to form a macromolecular binder, and evaporating the water.

22. The method of claim 21, characterized in that the curing is carried out at a temperature in the range of 90-200 ℃.

23. The method of claim 21, characterized in that the curing is carried out at a temperature in the range of 160 to 180 ℃.

24. A method according to any one of claims 21 to 23, characterised in that the aqueous binder composition is applied by spraying on the collection of fibres or particles.

25. The method of claim 21, wherein the assembly is a wood fiberboard or particleboard that has been subjected to compression during the curing process.
