1. An apparatus for in situ removal of a layer of sludge and/or sand from the bottom of a wetland under water, the apparatus comprising:

-a diving bell having an open bottom and a free lower edge;

-means for driving the diving bell and its lower rim to a desired depth in the sludge blanket to be cleared;

-a dredging pump mounted in the space of the diving bell and provided with an inlet for pumping sludge upwards and/or an outlet connected to a pipe for pumping sludge and/or sand pumped upwards to a collector;

-a compressor pumping pressurized gas into the space of the diving bell during dredging,

characterized in that the diving bell is further provided with a gas outlet for compressed gas, the height of which in the diving bell is adjustable in that the outlet is attached to a float that can float on sludge.

2. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the gas outlet is formed by an open end of a pipe, which end is released into the environment via an opening at the top of the diving bell.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the conduit discharges above the water level of the wetland.

4. The apparatus of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the outlet and its upper edge are located at a small height above the float.

Device as claimed in any of the foregoing claims, characterized in that the float on which the outlet is mounted is suspended in the diving bell by means of a chain or the like, the length of which chain is such that, when the diving bell is taken out of the water, the float and its bottom side are approximately at the level of the lower edge of the diving bell.

6. The apparatus of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the float is such that it floats on sludge but does not have sufficient buoyancy to allow the compressed gas outlet to float on water together with the weight of the pipe and the outlet.

7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the float is formed of a sheet of sufficient size that the sheet on the sludge carries the weight of the pipe.

Device as claimed in any of the foregoing claims, characterized in that the conduit is formed by a rigid metal tube, one end of which rests against and is attached to the float, the other end of which is released into the environment of the diving bell via a flexible coupling at the top of the diving bell.

9. Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that the dredging pump is attached to a fixed position in the diving bell, such that the dredging pump inlet is located at the level of the free lower edge of the diving bell.

Device as claimed in any of the foregoing claims, characterized in that the maximum pressure of the compressor is set to be higher than the pressure of a water column, the height of which is equal to the level of the difference between the surface of the wetland water and the lower free edge of the diving bell.

11. Device as claimed in any of the foregoing claims, characterized in that the free lower edge of the diving bell is made as a blade.

12. Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that near the lower edge of the diving bell there is provided a jet of water fed by a jet pump which jets water into the sludge inside.

13. Apparatus according to claim 12, characterized in that the jet pump is mounted outside the diving bell and is connected to a channel in a wall of the diving bell via a pipe discharging in the diving bell in a direction perpendicular to the wall.

14. The apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that the means for driving the diving bell into the sludge are formed by a hydraulic crane with a hydraulic unit providing hydraulic power to drive the dredging pump and optionally the jet pump.

15. An apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the hydraulic crane is set up on a work vessel or a floating vessel together with the above-mentioned compressor.

16. Apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the apparatus is provided with means for assessing the depth of the diving bell in the sludge blanket.

17. Apparatus according to claim 15, characterised in that the means for assessing the depth of the diving bell in the sludge are formed by a depth scale on the side wall of the bell and a camera.

18. The apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that the apparatus is provided with means for assessing the thickness of the sludge blanket.

19. Use of the apparatus according to any of the preceding claims for removing a layer of sludge and/or sand from the bottom of the wetland.
