Technical Field

The present invention relates to an applicator for applying a product, in particular a cosmetic product.

Background

The expression "cosmetic product" is understood to mean a product as defined in the european parliament and council on cosmetic products, 11/30, 2009, in 1223/2009 regulation (EC).

The invention is particularly designed for the application of cosmetic products, such as make-up products, for example eyeliners, in particular for drawing lines on the eyelids or mascaras to be applied to the eyelashes or the eyebrows.

To apply these types of products, one type of applicator is generally used, which comprises a grip cap, a projecting rod fixed to the cap, and an applicator member fastened to the free end of the rod. The applicator member may, for example, be in the form of an applicator tip for applying eyeliner, or in the form of a brush or comb attached to a rod for applying mascara. For more details on the design of such an applicator, reference may be made, for example, to patent application WO-A2-2011/004341.

With this type of applicator, it may be difficult to obtain a precise application of the product, in particular in the case where the eyeliner is to be deposited in the form of a thread, given the large axial distance between the free end of the applicator member and the gripping cap. Furthermore, it is not possible to obtain a fully satisfactory use ergonomics.

The present invention aims to overcome these disadvantages.

Disclosure of Invention

The object of the present invention is an applicator for applying a product, in particular a cosmetic product, comprising a grip cap and an applicator member provided with at least one application surface for said product and comprising a flexible portion.

According to a first general feature, the applicator further comprises a rigid assembly insert mounted at least partially inside the grip cap and fixed to said cap.

According to a second general feature, the flexible portion of the applicator member is fastened in the assembly insert in the region of said insert mounted inside the grip cap.

By "flexible portion of the applicator member" is understood, in contrast to "rigid assembly insert", a portion of the applicator member which, due to the material used and/or its dimensions, is capable of deforming under the effect of the load applied by the user after contact with the surface to be treated and which is capable of returning to its original position by elasticity once the load ceases.

The flexible portion of the applicator member is fastened in the region of the assembly insert that is arranged axially inside the gripping cap, so that the axial distance between this cap and the free end of the applicator member can be reduced.

Thus, the grip region of the cap is closer to the applicator member than prior art applicators. This promotes good ergonomics and improved application accuracy. The overall axial dimension of the applicator is also reduced.

Furthermore, the fastening areas visible at the outer surface of the insert between the assembly insert and the flexible portion of the applicator member are concealed by the presence of the grip cap surrounding the fastening area or areas. This helps the user to see the appearance and perceived quality of the applicator.

Furthermore, the flexibility of the flexible portion of the applicator member allows it to be reversibly deformed, e.g. by bending, thereby providing a degree of comfort during application.

According to an advantageous provision, the flexible portion of the applicator member is secured in the assembly insert by local plastic deformation of said insert.

The rigid nature of the assembly insert makes it possible to fix it to the flexible portion of the applicator member in a simple, safe and economical manner. The local plastic deformation or deformations may for example be obtained by material creep, for example by crimping or by upsetting. Alternatively, the flexible portion of the applicator member may be joined to the assembly insert by other methods (e.g., by ultrasonic welding).

Preferably, the flexible portion of the applicator member is made of a flexible material and the assembly insert is made of a rigid material.

According to one particular arrangement, the shore D hardness of the assembly insert may be at least 20 units greater than the shore D hardness of the flexible portion of the applicator member. The shore D hardness of the flexible portion of the applicator member may be, for example, less than 60 and greater than 20.

According to one particular design, the grip cap, the assembly insert and the applicator member may be designed such that the diameter D of the free end of said cap is between 8mm and 12mm and the axial length L between the free end of said cap and the free end of the applicator member is between 10mm and 25mm, in particular with an L/D ratio between 0.83 and 3.13.

This particular design aims to make the grip cap easier to hold in the hand and to optimize the axial distance between the cap and the free end of the applicator member.

The assembly insert is preferably provided with a housing within which the flexible portion of the applicator member is mounted and secured.

Advantageously, the assembly insert comprises at least one thread to make it possible to fasten the applicator to the container. The thread may be helical to allow tightening by screwing. Alternatively, one or more ribs may be provided on the assembly insert, which ribs make it possible to fasten it to the container by snap-fitting or snap-fastening. In this case, each relief forms a coupling tooth or a clamping tooth.

Thus, the applicator is secured to the container by the assembly insert rather than by gripping the cap, as is the case in prior art applicators.

In order to axially fix the grip cap with respect to the assembly insert, the latter may comprise at least one retaining member which engages with at least one complementary retaining member on the grip cap.

In one embodiment, the applicator member comprises an applicator tip forming said flexible portion and defining said product application surface. In an alternative embodiment, the applicator member may comprise a rod forming said flexible portion and a plurality of application elements supported by the rod and each defining a product application surface.

The invention also relates to a device for packaging and applying a product, in particular a cosmetic product, comprising a container for storing said product and an applicator as defined above, removably mounted between a closed position, in which the assembly insert closes the storage container and the applicator member is located inside said container, at least partially in contact with the product contained therein, and an application position, in which the applicator is separated from said container.

In one embodiment, the storage container comprises a body and a collar secured to the neck of the body and on which the assembly insert of the applicator is removably mounted. The collar may comprise an internal skirt within which the assembly insert of the applicator and the end portion of the grip cap fit when the applicator is in a position to close the storage container. The inner skirt may for example be provided with a fastening portion comprising at least one thread designed to engage with a thread of the assembly insert when the applicator is in a position closing the storage container, and with a sealing portion in sealing contact with said insert.

In another embodiment, the assembly insert of the applicator is secured to the neck of the storage container.

Detailed Description

Fig. 1 and 2 show a device, designated as a whole by the reference numeral 10, intended to allow the packaging and application of cosmetic products. The cosmetic product to be applied may be, for example, an eyeliner.

The device 10 with its longitudinal axis X-X' is shown in a hypothetical vertical position. The device 10 includes a product applicator 12 and a container 14 containing a cosmetic product (not shown) to be applied.

As will be described in more detail below, the applicator 12 is designed for achieving a particularly good comfort and improved application accuracy during application of the product.

In the exemplary embodiment shown, a container 14 having an axis X-X' includes a body 16 and a collar 18 secured to the body. The body 16 internally defines an internal volume or reservoir 20 for storing a cosmetic product. The body 16 includes an end forming a bottom and an open opposite end forming a neck 22 defining an opening for accessing the interior reservoir 20. In the exemplary embodiment shown, the body 16 has a circular cross-section. In a variant, the body 16 may have a polygonal, in particular square, or elliptical cross-section. The body 16 is made in one piece by moulding a synthetic material. Alternatively, the body may be made of other materials, such as glass. With such a material, a seal may be provided between the body 16 and the collar 18.

The collar 18 makes it possible in particular to removably mount the applicator 12 on the container 14. The collar 18 is likewise made in one piece by moulding a synthetic material. The collar 18 includes an upper front end wall 24 and a peripheral outer fastening skirt 26 extending the wall to allow the collar to be fastened to the body 16. The fastening skirt 26 is centred on the axis X-X'. A fastening skirt 26 extends axially from the end wall 24. The end wall 24 extends radially. The fastening skirt 26 continues the large-diameter edge of the end wall 24 in the axial direction. The skirt 26 has a circular cross-section.

The fastening skirt 26 of the collar comprises, on its inner surface, a protuberance 28 for retaining the body 16, which extends inwards and engages by snap fastening in a corresponding groove 30 formed in the outer surface of the neck 22 of said body. The protuberances 28 may be continuous or discontinuous in the circumferential direction. As shown more clearly in fig. 3, the fastening skirt 26 also includes an inwardly extending annular sealing rib 32 on its inner surface. The rib 32 bears in a sealing manner against the neck 22 of the body. The rib 32 is located axially above the snap-fastening elevation 28.

The fastening skirt 26 may also include a plurality of axial fins on its inner surface that are spaced from one another in the circumferential direction and engage with fins provided on the body 16 so as to provide an anti-rotation function that prevents the collar 18 from rotating relative to the body.

The collar 18 includes an internal annular mounting skirt 36 for receiving and securing the applicator 12 to the container 14, as will be described in greater detail below. A mounting skirt 36 extends axially from the front end wall 24. Skirt 36 is centered on axis X-X'. The outer fastening skirt 26 radially surrounds the inner mounting skirt 36 so as to be radially spaced therefrom.

The inner mounting skirt 36 has a stepped shape. The inner skirt 36 is provided with a proximal mounting portion 38 extending from the front end wall 24, with a distal sealing portion 40, and with a fastening portion 42 extending between the mounting portion 38 and the sealing portion 40. The outer diameter of the fastening portion 42 is smaller than the outer diameter of the mounting portion 38, leaving a radial shoulder (not numbered) therebetween. The sealing portion 40 axially continues the fastening portion 42 on the side opposite to the mounting portion 38. In the exemplary embodiment shown, the sealing portion 40 has an upwardly flared cone portion.

Referring again to fig. 1 and 2, the applicator 12 includes a gripping cap 50, an applicator member 52, in this case in the form of an applicator tip 53, and an assembly insert 54 secured to the cap 50 and supporting the applicator tip 53. The insert 54 is separate from and connected to the cap 50. Insert 54 is secured to cap 50. The insert 54 is also separate from the applicator member 52.

The applicator tip 53 is made of a flexible material, in particular a flexible synthetic material. The applicator tip 53 may be, for example, foam, felt, rubber, or flock. The free end portion of the applicator tip 53 defines a product application surface S intended to come into contact with the area of the user' S body to be treated. In this case, the application surface S has a frustoconical shape in order to improve the application precision of the product. However, other shapes may alternatively still be provided.

The cap 50, of axis X-X', comprises a tubular peripheral wall 56 and an upper front end wall 58 from which the wall 56 extends. In the exemplary embodiment shown, the outer peripheral wall 56 has a circular cross-section. In a variant, the peripheral wall 56 may have a polygonal, in particular square, cross section or an elliptical cross section.

In order to fasten the cap 50 to the insert 54, the peripheral wall 56 of said cap comprises, on its inner surface, a groove 60 in which a retaining protuberance 62 formed on the outer surface of the insert 54 engages by snap fastening, as shown more clearly in figure 3. The protuberances 62 extend radially outward. The protuberances 62 may be continuous or discontinuous in the circumferential direction.

The insert 54 is made of a rigid material. The insert may be made of, for example, a rigid synthetic material (e.g., PP, PE, etc.) or of steel or aluminum.

In the exemplary embodiment shown, the insert 54 is mounted partially inside the cap 50 and projects axially outside said cap. The insert 54 includes a proximal fastening portion 64 and a distal mounting portion 66. The fastening portion 64 makes it possible to fasten the cap 50 to the insert 54 and to fasten the applicator tip 53 inside said insert. The mounting portion 66 allows the applicator 12 to be removably mounted on the container 14.

The fastening portion 64 of the insert is provided with a ridge 62 on its outer surface for fastening the cap 50 to the insert. The fastening portion 64 is mounted inside the cap 50 and more specifically inside the peripheral wall 56 of said cap. The cap 50 covers the fastening portion 64 of the insert. Cap 50 is mounted on insert 54 by axial pushing only. To make such mounting easier, a slight radial clearance may be provided between the outer surface of the fastening portion 64 of the insert and the inner surface of the peripheral wall 56 of the cap.

The mounting portion 66 of the insert continues the fastening portion 64 in the axial direction. The mounting portion 66 projects axially beyond the cap 50. The mounting portion 66 has an outer diameter smaller than the outer diameter of the fastening portion 64. A radial shoulder (not referenced) is formed between these parts and in this case bears axially against a radial shoulder formed on the skirt 36 of the collar 18 of the container. The end portion of the cap 50 that covers the insert 54 extends partially inside the mounting portion 38 of the skirt.

The mounting portion 66 of the insert includes on its outer surface a helical thread 68 which engages a corresponding thread 70 formed on the skirt 36 of the collar 18 of the container for screwing the applicator 12 onto the container 14. Threads 70 are provided on the inner surface of the fastening portion 42 of the skirt. The threads 68, 70 may be continuous or discontinuous in the circumferential direction. The mounting portion 66 is in sealing contact with the sealing portion 40 of the skirt 36 in a radial direction when the applicator 12 is in a position closing the container 14.

The insert 54 includes a housing 72 within which the applicator tip 53 is mounted and secured. The housing 72 extends axially from the free end of the mounting portion 66 to the fastening portion 64. The housing 72 is centered on the axis X-X'. In this case, the housing 72 is made in the form of a blind hole. The applicator tip 53 protrudes axially beyond the insert 54. Thus, the applicator tip 53 protrudes out of the housing 72. The applicator tip 53 extends inside the sealing portion 40 of the skirt 36 of the collar 18 without contact. The applicator tip 53 protrudes axially beyond the sealing portion 40.

The applicator tip 53 is secured inside the insert by local plastic deformation of the insert. These variations of the insert, labeled 74, are visible in fig. 2 and 3. In the region of the housing 72, a local plastic deformation 74 is achieved on the fastening portion 64 of the insert. The deformation 74 is formed by radially coining the material without removing the swarf so as to cause the material to creep locally radially inward against the applicator tip 53. The flexible applicator tip 53 is also locally deformed. Thus, the applicator tip 53 is secured inside the housing 72. This operation may be achieved, for example, by crimping or by upsetting, and is performed prior to mounting the cap 50 on the insert 54.

In the closed position illustrated in the figures, in which the applicator 12 is mounted on the container 14, the insert 54 closes the collar 18 of the container, and the applicator tip 53 is located inside the internal reservoir 20 of the container so that it can be filled with the product to be applied, for example by contact or by capillary action. When a user wishes to apply the product, they grasp the cap 50 of the applicator 12, unscrew the insert 54 by rotating the cap, and then manipulate the cap to obtain the desired application.

Assuming that the applicator tip 53 is fastened to the portion of the insert 54 covered by the cap 50, the user can hold the cap at a small axial distance from the free end of the applicator tip 53. This facilitates the ergonomics of use and also allows for good application accuracy. The flexibility of the applicator tip 53 also provides a degree of comfort during application and makes the application easier.

Advantageously, the diameter D of the free end of the cap 50 is between 8mm and 12mm and the axial length L between the free end of the cap 50 and the free end of the applicator tip 53 is between 10mm and 25mm, in particular with an L/D ratio between 0.83 and 3.13.

With such an L/D ratio, the user has an applicator 10 whose cap 50 has a diameter that makes it easier to grip, and has the end of the applicator tip 53 positioned as close as possible to the gripping portion of the cap, in order to further improve ergonomics and application accuracy.

In this first exemplary embodiment, an applicator of device 10 is provided to apply an eyeliner-type cosmetic product. The applicator that is the subject of the present invention may be provided for applying other types of cosmetic products.

For example, in the exemplary embodiment illustrated in fig. 4 and 5, the device 100 is intended to allow packaging and application of a mascara-type cosmetic product.

The device 100 with longitudinal axis X-X' comprises a product applicator 102 and a container 104 containing a cosmetic product (not shown) to be applied.

In the exemplary embodiment, container 104 is fabricated as one piece. The container 104 internally defines an interior volume or reservoir 106 for storing the cosmetic product. The container 104 includes an end forming a bottom and an open opposite end forming a neck 108 defining an opening for accessing the interior reservoir 106.

The applicator 102 includes a gripping cap 110, an applicator member 112, and an assembly insert 114 secured to the cap 110 and supporting the applicator member 112. The insert 114 is separate from and connected to the cap 110. The insert 114 is secured to the cap 110. The insert 114 is also separate from the applicator member 112.

The applicator member 112 comprises a rod 116 extending along the axis X-X' and a plurality of applicator elements 118 supported by the rod 116. The applicator member 112 includes an applicator end piece 119 that is secured to the stem 116 and includes an applicator element 118. Applicator element 118 is supported by rod 116 via applicator end piece 119. Applicator element 118 protrudes from applicator end piece 119.

Each application element 118 defines a product application surface intended to come into contact with the keratin fibres of the user (in this case the eyelashes and/or the eyebrows).

The rod 116 is made of a flexible material, in particular a flexible synthetic material. By way of indication, the stem 116 may be made of, for example, a flexible synthetic material such as SEBS, silicone, latex, butyl, EPDM, nitrile, thermoplastic elastomer, or the like. In this case, the rod 116 has a circular cross section. In a variant, the rod 116 may have a polygonal, in particular square, or elliptical cross-section, etc.

Applicator element 118 is mounted on applicator end piece 119. The applicator element 118 has the function of separating and combing the keratin fibres of the user and defines a space between each other for the passage of these fibres. Each applicator element 118 extends radially outward from an applicator end piece 119.

In this case, the application element 118 is produced in the form of a spike. The applicator element 118 may have other forms, such as bristles and/or teeth and/or dots and/or stripes and/or bosses and/or fins, etc. By way of indication, the height of the applicator element 118 may be between 1mm and 6 mm. The applicator elements 118 may have equal heights or have heights that vary along the axis X-X'. It is also possible to provide application elements which differ from each other by at least one of their shape, thickness, height, orientation, color and/or material.

The applicator end piece 119 and the applicator element 118 may, for example, be moulded from one and the same synthetic material, or in a variant they may be made from at least two different synthetic materials. The applicator element 118 may be produced in one piece, for example by molding with the applicator end piece 119 or by over-molding on the rod, or fastened to the rod by any suitable means (e.g., by adhesive bonding, flocking, crimping, etc.).

An applicator end piece 119 of axis X-X' is mounted at the free end of the rod 116. To this end, a blind cut-out (not labeled) is formed in the lower end of the rod 116, within which the applicator end piece 119 is partially received. The applicator end piece 119 may be secured to the rod 116 by any suitable means, such as by wedging, screwing, welding, adhesive bonding, crimping, etc. The applicator end piece 119 comprises a core 120 of elongated shape with axis X-X' on which the applicator element 118 is arranged.

The cap 110, of axis X-X', comprises a tubular peripheral wall 121 and an upper front end wall 122 from which the wall 121 extends. In order to fasten the cap 110 to the insert 114, the peripheral wall 112 of said cap comprises on its inner surface a groove 124 in which a retaining ridge 126 formed on the outer surface of the insert 114 engages by snap fastening. The protuberances 126 extend radially outward. The ridges 126 may be continuous or discontinuous in the circumferential direction.

The insert 114 is made of a rigid material. The insert may be made of, for example, a rigid synthetic material (e.g., PP, PE, etc.) or of steel or aluminum. In the illustrated exemplary embodiment, the insert 114 is mounted entirely inside the cap 110.

The insert 114 includes an upper front end wall 128, a first inner mounting skirt 130, and a first outer peripheral outer fastening skirt 132 surrounding the inner skirt. The skirts 130, 132 are centered on the axis X-X'. The skirts 130, 132 extend axially from the front wall 128. The front wall 128 extends radially.

The outer skirt 132 continues the large diameter edge of the front wall 128 in the axial direction. The outer skirt 132 radially surrounds the inner skirt 130 so as to be radially spaced from the inner skirt. In this case, the outer skirt 132 extends axially beyond the inner skirt 130. The skirt 132 has a circular cross-section.

The outer skirt 132 internally includes a helical thread 134 for screwing the insert 114 onto a corresponding thread 136 formed on the neck 108 of the container. The threads 134, 136 may be continuous or discontinuous in the circumferential direction.

The insert 114 further comprises a second inner mounting skirt 138 and a second outer peripheral outer fastening skirt 140 surrounding the inner skirt so as to be radially spaced therefrom. The skirts 138, 140 extend axially from the front wall 128 on a side opposite the skirts 130, 132. The skirts 138, 140 are centered on the axis X-X'.

The outer fastening skirt 140 is provided with a ridge 126 on its outer surface for fastening the cap 110 to the insert 114. The mounting skirt 138 is located in axial continuation of the mounting skirt 130.

The insert 114 includes a housing 142 that is bounded by the mounting skirts 130, 138 and within which the stem 116 of the applicator member 112 is mounted and secured. The housing 142 extends axially from the free end of the skirt 130 to the bottom wall of the skirt 138.

In a similar manner to the first example, the rod 116 is fastened inside the insert 114 by local plastic deformation of the insert. These deformations of the insert, labeled 144, are visible in fig. 5. A local plastic deformation 144 is achieved on the mounting skirt 138. The flexible rod 116 of the applicator member 112 is also locally deformed. The rod 116 is secured inside the housing 142. The fastening may be achieved, for example, by crimping or by upsetting, and is performed prior to mounting the cap 110 on the insert 114.

By means of the present invention, an applicator is provided which has a limited axial dimension and good use ergonomics, while making it possible to achieve an improved application accuracy.
