Technical Field

The present invention relates to an improved process for the removal of impurities, particularly other impurities (e.g. H)2S and CO2) In the presence of a catalyst, mercaptan removal is improved from a non-aqueous process stream that is primarily a gas, but also includes a liquid.

Background

It is known that it is important to remove impurities, such as hydrogen sulfide (H), from various feed streams, particularly gaseous feed streams2S), carbon dioxide (CO)2) Carbon Oxysulfide (COS), carbon disulfide (CS)2) Disulfides and thiols.

Such feed streams occur in the processing of, for example, natural gas. The gas from a natural gas field contains mainly methane and may also contain significant amounts of impurities such as carbon dioxide (easily up to 70 vol.%), hydrogen sulphide, mercaptans and carbonyl sulphide. Therefore, it may be desirable to remove these impurities to reduce further transportation costs as compressed gas, to mitigate corrosion risks in downstream systems and pipelines, to adjust the heating value of the gas to suit consumer needs, and/or to enable liquefaction of natural gas into liquefied natural gas lng (liquefied natural gas), an increasingly widely used means of transportation to transport natural gas from remote acquisition sites to the natural gas consumption market.

Removal of impurities is also important in refinery streams, such as LPG fractions, off-gases from Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC), hydrotreater off-gases, and refinery gases typically contain significant amounts of mercaptans and/or H2S is in oneIn some cases CO may also be present2. The distillate fractions for different fuel cells need to be desulfurized to alleviate the acid rain problem caused by SOx emissions in the flue gas after combustion. Thus, several of these liquid fractions are subjected to hydrodesulfurization, which is the conversion of heavy sulfur compounds into gaseous H2And S refining. H collected from all these sources in a so-called Claus plant2S can subsequently be converted to elemental sulphur, which has become a commercial product, for example as a feedstock for the production of sulphuric acid.

In addition, in the main consisting of H2CO and possibly N2Impurity removal can be important in the production of compositional syngas, which is a variety of forms of gas that are important chemical building blocks, but also important intermediates in the energy conversion from solid carbonaceous streams (e.g., solid waste streams, tar sands, oil shale, etc.). It is often desirable to remove mercaptans, H, from syngas2S and CO2Since mercaptans and H2S may be an undesirable reactant therein, and/or cause the evolution of sulfur oxides (SOx) upon combustion, which is undesirable in view of acid rain concerns, and because of CO2It is possible, for example, to charge the downstream process with interfering inerts.

However, simultaneous and efficient removal of mercaptans, H2S and CO2Still a significant challenge, especially in view of the increasingly stringent environmental and technical requirements, and the driving force for the continued cost reduction of natural gas processing plants.

The removal of contaminants from gases, and to a lesser extent also organic liquids such as, for example, LPG streams, is typically accomplished by scrubbing the stream with an absorbent solution, typically at a relatively low temperature to facilitate the absorption of the contaminants. Most of the impurities are absorbed in the absorbent solution, and then the absorbent solution rich in (impurities) is sent to a regeneration step for regeneration. The lean absorbent solution from the regeneration step is then typically cooled and recycled to the absorption step. Typical absorbent solutions contain alkaline absorbents and amine compounds are preferred over other options (e.g., hot carbon)Potassium salt). Even more preferred are alkanolamines. A conventional absorbent is, for example, 2-hydroxyethylamine, also known as Monoethanolamine (MEA). According to a reversible exothermic reaction, the absorbed impurities react with the alkanolamine present in the solution. For MEA, two molecule MEA's are typically required to absorb one molecule of CO2. More complex sterically hindered amines (including tertiary amines) have been found to provide improved stoichiometry.

These types of solvents chemically react with impurities to form the hot regenerating salt, and are generally referred to herein as chemical solvents. Alkanolamines derived from primary, secondary and/or tertiary amines are the most widely used chemical solvents. The most commonly used amines are derived from ethanolamines, especially Monoethanolamine (MEA), Diethanolamine (DEA), Triethanolamine (TEA), Diisopropanolamine (DIPA) and Methyldiethanolamine (MDEA). A disadvantage of such chemical solvents is that the chemical bonds between the solvent and the impurities need to be broken during the regeneration step, which requires a large amount of energy. In particular, the regeneration of primary and secondary alkanolamine solutions consumes large amounts of steam. Since thiols are weak acids, when H is present2S and CO2When the latter two react faster with alkanolamines, removal of the mercaptans by chemical solvents will not be efficient. Thus, mercaptans can chemically react with alkanolamines, but they react with H2S and CO2There is competition.

As an alternative to chemical solvents, so-called physical solvents are often used to capture small amounts of sulphur-containing components (such as mercaptans). Physical solvents rely on physical absorption processes, and impurities are dissolved and thus physically absorbed into the physical solvent. The energy associated with impurities is generally less than most typical so-called chemical solvents. Typical physical solvents are: mixtures of sulfolane and its derivatives, fatty acid amides, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), methanol, and dialkyl ethers of polyethylene glycol: (United Carbide corporation (Union Carbide)).

Mixtures of chemical and physical solvents, so-called complex solvents, may also be used. This complex solvent can achieve very low impurity levels in a single processing step by a combination of both removal of large amounts of impurities by physical solvents and rigorous purification by chemical solvents.

One well-known commercial complex solvent isSolvent(s)

Which are commonly used to treat refinery gases, natural gases and synthesis gases. The solvent is a mixture of sulfolane, alkanolamine (DIPA or MDEA) and water. When it is desired to completely remove H2S and CO2And the deep removal of COS is often selected as

A solvent. The solution containing MDEA is calledIs usually used in CO2Selective removal of H in the presence of2And S, and the COS can be partially removed. US4,085,192 describes selective removal of H2S by using such a composition comprising an alkanolamine and sulfolaneType solvent. TheThe solvent shows p-H2S、CO2And good absorption capacity of mercaptans, however, it also shows co-absorption of valuable hydrocarbons. Against hydrocarbons should be avoidedCo-absorbing to reduce the loss of hydrocarbons in the separated impurities.

US2016/0288046a1 relates to a process for removing acidic sulfur components from a fluid stream by using an aqueous mixture of an amine component and a physical solvent. The amine component is typically a tertiary amine such as, in particular, 3-dimethylamino-1, 2-propanediol (DMAPD), 3-diethylaminopropane-1, 2-diol, 2-hydroxymethyl-2-dimethylaminopropane-1, 3-diol, or 2-hydroxymethyl-2-diethylaminopropane-1, 3-diol, and sterically hindered amines such as 2-hydroxymethyl-2-methylaminopropane-1, 3-diol, and 2-methyl-2-hydroxyethylaminopropanol. Preferred physical solvents include monofunctional and difunctional alcohols having a dielectric constant of less than about 20, such as: methoxy Triethylene Glycol (MTG), Methoxy Diethylene Glycol (MDG), ethoxy triethylene glycol, butoxy triethylene glycol, and mixtures thereof, or glycol ethers such as methyl terminated polyethylene glycol ethers and methyl terminated polypropylene glycols. US2016/0288046A1 relates primarily to the removal of acid sulfur components, and in particular to the selective removal of H from gas streams2S, the gas stream containing other impurities, e.g. N2、CO2、CH4、C2H6、C3H8、H2、CO、H2O、COS、HCN、NH3、O2And/or a thiol. In US2016/0288046a1, it was found that the dielectric properties of the amine component and the physical solvent are important. Most preferred are complex solvents having a low dielectric constant. No mention is made about the amount of co-absorption of hydrocarbons.

US8,313,718 discloses a method for removing H from a hydrocarbon gas stream also containing mercaptans by using an absorption (scrubbing) composition2S and CO2The absorption (scrubbing) composition comprises a solution (chemical or physical solvent, or mixtures thereof) and an effective amount of a thiol inclusion compound such as cyclodextrin, calixarene, cucurbituril, cryptand, or mixtures thereof. Alkanolamines are mentioned as chemical solvents and include, for example, Monoethanolamine (MEA), Diethanolamine (DEA), Triethanolamine (TEA), Diisopropylamine (DIPA), Diglycolamine (DGA) and Methyldiethanolamine (MDEA). The following are mentioned as useful physical solvents: cyclotetramethylene sulfone, fatty acid amide, N-alkylMixtures of pyrrolidone such as N-methyl pyrrolidone and the corresponding piperidones, methanol, and dialkyl ethers of polyethylene glycol. US8,313,718 demonstrates that the addition of such a thiol inclusion compound improves the removal of thiols. A significant disadvantage of the process of US8,313,718 is that it requires a composition with additional components on top of the conventional complex solvent, which in turn results in additional raw material costs. The co-absorption of hydrocarbons is not mentioned.

US5,413,627 discloses a process for the preparation of a catalyst in H2、N2、Ar、CO2CO and aliphatic hydrocarbons using a physical detergent to selectively remove sulfur compounds, such as H2S、COS、CS2And mercaptans. Heterocyclic compounds are used as suitable physical detergents which need to have five or more ring atoms of which 2 are heteroatoms, one is nitrogen and the other is oxygen or nitrogen. The nitrogen atoms present in the ring are double-or single-bonded, but if single-bonded, the nitrogen is organically substituted. Various detergents are disclosed. The physical detergent may also be used in the form of a physically active detergent composition together with a compound selected from various heterocycles. US5,412,627 relates primarily to CO2In the presence of sulfur-removing compounds (e.g. H)2S) without involving an efficient simultaneous removal of mercaptans. The co-absorption of hydrocarbons is not mentioned.

US2009/0299122a1 proposes a process for producing purified hydrocarbon gas which does not result in a significant risk of loss of hydrocarbon product. First, the gas stream is partially purified by cooling the gas stream and removing any solidified and/or liquefied impurities. The partially purified gas is then compressed and the compressed partially purified gas is further contacted with an absorption liquid. The absorption liquid may comprise an amine compound, such as an alkanolamine, and may further comprise a physical solvent. According to US2009/0299122a1, suitable physical solvents include: tetramethylene sulfone and derivatives, amides of aliphatic carboxylic acids, N-alkylpyrrolidones, in particular N-methylpyrrolidone, N-alkylpiperidinones, in particular N-methylpiperidinone, methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, mono-or di- (C) of ethylene glycol or polyethylene glycol1-C4) An alkyl ether. It should be mentioned that US2009/0299122a1 does not describe any feasible example. Thus, US2009/0299122a1 does not provide any experimental evidence-demonstrating effective simultaneous removal of mercaptans and other impurities (such as H)2S and CO2) And reduces the risk of significant loss of hydrocarbon products.

In the prior art, the solvent N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is generally recommended as a physical solvent. However, NMP is under supervision due to concerns about its potential health effects. NMP has attracted increasing attention because environmental regulatory bodies (first in california, and more recently in the european union) have sought to exercise control over such solvents-first in markets where it presents an inhalation hazard. Furthermore, NMP is currently known to cause reproductive toxicity (which is considered to be reproductive toxic), and from 12/1/2010 it is labeled as "reproductive toxicity category 2" in the EU. Formulations containing > 0.3% NMP must be so labeled. Thus, the use of solvents is limited to professional users. NMP has been placed on the REACH list of "substances of great interest" (SVHC) and is expected to be placed under authorization or restriction sooner or later.

Thus, there remains a need for less toxic, more economical and more environmentally friendly absorbent solutions that are capable of retaining other impurities (e.g., H)2S and CO2) In the presence of these, mercaptans are absorbed efficiently while maintaining excellent performance in conventional absorption-regeneration cycles, and they also exhibit negligible hydrocarbon co-absorption.

The terms so used are interchangeable under appropriate circumstances and the embodiments of the invention can operate in other sequences than described or illustrated herein.

Furthermore, the terms top, bottom, over, under and the like in the description and the claims are used for descriptive purposes and not necessarily for describing relative positions. The terms so used are interchangeable under appropriate circumstances and the embodiments of the invention described herein are capable of operation in other orientations than described or illustrated herein.

The term "comprising" as used in the claims should not be construed as being limited to the means listed thereafter; without excluding other elements or steps. It needs to be interpreted as: it is specifically intended that the present features, integers, steps or components as referred to are present but does not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, integers, steps or components or groups thereof. Thus, the scope of the expression "a device comprising means a and B" should not be limited to devices consisting of only components a and B. This means that only the devices are a and B with respect to the relevant components of the invention. Thus, the terms "comprising" and "including" encompass the more limiting terms "consisting essentially of …" and "consisting of …".

As used above and below, the following definitions apply unless otherwise indicated.

The term "alkyl", alone or in combination, refers to an alkane-derived group, e.g., CF-GAlkyl is defined as a straight-chain or branched alkyl group having F to G carbon atoms, e.g. C1-4Alkyl is defined as a straight-chain or branched alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, such as, for example, methyl, ethyl, 1-propyl, 2-propyl, 1-butyl, 2-methyl-2-propyl, 2-methyl-1-propyl. The alkyl group may be a straight chain alkyl group or a branched alkyl group.

The term "alkanol", alone or in combination, refers to any alkyl group containing one or more hydroxyl (-OH) functional groups, e.g., CF-GAlkanols are defined as straight-chain or branched alkanols having F to G carbon atoms, e.g. C1-4Alkanols are defined as straight-chain or branched alkanols having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The alkanol group may be mono-, di-, tri-or poly-valent and may be a linear alkanol or a branched alkanol.

The term "alkoxyalcohol", alone or in combination, means an organic compound of formula X-O-Y, wherein X is alkyl substituted by-O-Y, which is substituted with-O-YWherein Y is an alkanol group. E.g. CF-GAlkoxyalcohols are defined as alkoxyalcohols having a total of F-G carbon atoms, e.g. C1-4Alkoxylated alcohols are defined as alkoxylated alcohol groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, such as, for example, ethoxyethanol, methoxyethanol, ethoxymethanol, methoxymethanol.

The term "alkanolamine" refers to an amine compound comprising at least one alkanol group, wherein the additional substituents are selected from H, alkyl groups or alkanol groups. In this context, a primary alkanolamine comprises one alkanol group and two hydrogens bonded to a nitrogen atom, a secondary alkanolamine comprises at least one alkanol group and at least one hydrogen bonded to a nitrogen atom, and a tertiary alkanolamine comprises at least one alkanol group and no hydrogen bonded to a nitrogen atom.

The term "at least one substituted 2-pyrrolidone of formula (I)" is intended to denote one or more than one substituted 2-pyrrolidone of formula (I). Mixtures of substituted 2-pyrrolidones of the general formula (I) can also be used for the purposes of the present invention. The term "at least one substituted 2-pyrrolidone of formula (II)" is intended to denote one or more than one substituted 2-pyrrolidone of formula (II). Mixtures of substituted 2-pyrrolidones of the general formula (II) can also be used for the purposes of the present invention. The term "at least one amine compound of formula (III)" is intended to denote one or more than one amine compound of formula (III). Mixtures of amine compounds of the general formula (III) can also be used for the purposes of the present invention.

It should be understood that the term "amount" relates to a characteristic that is measurable in terms of quantity. The term "amount" may denote a mass, or a weight, or a mole, or any physical or in any case numerical parameter, which is capable of indicating the presence of an impurity or a mixture of impurities at least at the level of an amount, unless otherwise stated.

In the context of the present invention, the expression "contacting a feed stream comprising impurities with an absorbent stream in counter-current" is intended to mean that the absorbent stream is contacted with the feed stream comprising impurities in such a way that: such that the absorbent stream and the feed stream approach each other in opposite directions. It should also be understood that the angle at which the streams approach each other may deviate by 180 °.

In the context of the present invention, at least one of the streams is a mobile stream. Thus, at least the following three cases may occur: contacting a static feed stream with a moving flowing absorbent stream; contacting the moving flowing feed stream with a static absorbent stream; or contacting the moving flowing feed stream with a moving flowing absorbent stream. The term "at least one of the streams" is intended to mean one or more than one stream.

As mentioned above, in the prior art, the solvent N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is generally recommended as a physical solvent. Applicants have now found that only specific substituted 2-pyrrolidones of formula (I) and formula (II) as detailed above, characterized by particular specific choices for o, n and m in formula (I) as defined above, and p and q in formula (II), can provide an absorbent stream that removes mercaptans from the feed stream more efficiently than NMP, as demonstrated by the examples below.

Applicants believe that in terms of chemical structure, extending the chain attached to the nitrogen of the substituted 2-pyrrolidone (formula (I) or formula (II) according to the present invention) to a total of at least four carbon atoms appears to produce an absorbent stream that is more effective in removing mercaptans from the feed stream. As a further advantage, compounds with extended chain lengths (such as N-N-butyl-2-pyrrolidone) have been found to be non-reprotoxic.

The applicant has also found that the specific choice of o, n and m in formula (I) and p and q in formula (II) also limits the chain length of the chain attached to the nitrogen of the substituted 2-pyrrolidone (formula (I) or formula (II) according to the invention) in terms of chemical structure, as defined above, and appears to produce an absorbent stream that maintains a low hydrocarbon co-absorption tendency. This brings the advantage that less valuable hydrocarbon compounds are lost in the separated impurities, and also leads to a higher process selectivity for the impurities.

Figure BDA0002632950760000111

wherein:

-o is an integer ranging from 2 to 4.

According to a preferred embodiment of the process of the invention, compound (A) is selected from those of formula (I-c) or formula (I-d) herein below:

the inventors have found that compound (a), as detailed herein, which is comprised in the absorbent stream according to step a) of the process of the present invention, can act as both a physical solvent and a chemical solvent, thereby forming a so-called composite solvent on its own. Without being bound by this theory, the inventors believe that the pyrrolidone ring in compound (A) provides enhanced ability to dissolve thiols, while the tertiary amine substitution on the pyrrolidone ring in compound (A) is providedThe radicals may be associated with other impurities (e.g. CO)2And H2S) reacting.

The inventors have also found that in other impurities (e.g. H)2S and CO2) When compound (a) is used in the absorbent stream, a minimum amount of 15 wt% of compound (a) relative to the total weight of the absorbent stream is required to achieve effective mercaptan removal.

In the compounds (B) which are comprised in the mixture (M) used in step a) of the process according to the invention, preferably R5And R6Is H, j is 0. Preferred compounds (B) are therefore those selected from the following formulae (II-a) herein:

Figure BDA0002632950760000121

wherein:

-R3and R4Each of which is independently selected from H or CH3

q is 1; p is an integer in the range of 2 to 6.

Typical compounds (B) suitable for step a) of the process of the invention may therefore include, but are not limited to, specific N-alkyl-2-pyrrolidones, such as: N-N-butyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-sec-butyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-isobutyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-tert-butyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-N-pentyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-sec-pentyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-tert-pentyl-2-pyrrolidone, n-3-pentyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-isopentyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-neopentyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-N-hexyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-N-heptyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-N-octyl-2-pyrrolidone, or a mixture of two or more thereof.

The inventors found that, in terms of chemical structure, in the compound (B) used in step a) according to the invention, extending the carbon chain attached to the nitrogen of the pyrrolidone ring to at least four carbon atoms, an absorbent stream is obtained: mercaptans are removed from the feed stream more efficiently than NMP, as demonstrated in the examples below, and are anogenital toxic. The inventors have also found that compounds (B) according to the invention, in which the carbon chain attached to the nitrogen of the pyrrolidone ring is limited to at most 8 carbon atoms, maintain a low tendency to hydrocarbon co-absorption.

Good results were obtained when: the weight percentage of compound (B) contained in mixture (M) used in step a) is comprised between 10 and 35% by weight with respect to the total weight of mixture (M); the weight percentage of compound (C) contained in mixture (M) used in step a) is between 30 and 65% by weight with respect to the total weight of mixture (M); the weight percentage of water (contained in the mixture (M) used in step a) is between 15 and 40% by weight with respect to the total weight of the mixture (M).

According to a preferred embodiment, the absorbent stream used in step a) of the process according to the invention comprises:

-from 10% to 35% by weight of at least one compound (B) of general formula (II) as defined above,

-from 30% to 65% by weight of at least one compound (C) of general formula (III) as defined above,

-from 15% to 40% by weight of water,

all wt% are relative to the total weight of the absorbent stream.

According to another embodiment, the absorbent stream used in step a) of the process according to the invention consists essentially of:

-from 10% to 35% by weight of at least one compound (B) of general formula (II) as defined above,

-from 30% to 65% by weight of at least one compound (C) of general formula (III) as defined above,

-from 15% to 40% by weight of water,

all wt% are relative to the total weight of the absorbent stream.

It is also understood that in this example, any additional ingredients (other than compound (B) as detailed above, compound (C) as detailed above and water) are present in an amount of at most 5 wt%, preferably at most 2 wt%, relative to the total weight of the absorbent stream.

If desired, the absorbent stream may further comprise a promoter for the reaction of the absorbent stream with at least one impurity, in particular with carbon dioxide. The promoter provides a significant improvement in the system kinetics, faster absorption rates, higher loading, lower absorbent/feed stream ratios, smaller plant designs, and lower regeneration heat requirements, and thus lower cooling capacity. A lower absorbent stream/feed stream ratio may lead to a more compact design of the plant (plant), absorber and regenerator. Alternatively, when the same absorbent stream/feed stream ratio is used, a substantially greater amount of impurities can generally be removed.

Advantageously, the weight percentages of promoter (comprised in the absorbent stream used in step a) relative to the total weight of the absorbent stream are: 0.1 to 20 wt.%, preferably at least 0.5 wt.%, preferably at least 1 wt.%, preferably at least 1.5 wt.%, preferably at least 2 wt.%, preferably at least 2.5 wt.%; and, alternatively, or in combination therewith, up to 18 wt%, preferably up to 16 wt%, preferably up to 14 wt%, preferably up to 12 wt%, preferably up to 10 wt%, preferably up to 9 wt%, even more preferably up to 8.5 wt% by weight.

Typical promoters, suitable for use in the absorbent stream used in step a) of the process of the present invention, may thus include, but are not limited to: amines, alcohols, ketones, vinyl alcohols, vinyl ketones, ether alcohols, ether ketones, glycols, polyethylene glycols, polypropylene glycols, ethylene glycol propylene glycol copolymers, glycol ethers, mercapto glycols, thiols, sulfones, sulfoxides, N-alkylated 2-pyrrolidones, N-alkylated piperidones, cyclotetramethylene sulfones, N-alkyl formamides, N-alkyl acetamides, alkyl phosphates, alkylene carbonates and/or dialkyl carbonates. More preferred candidates are Monoethanolamine (MEA), Diethanolamine (DEA), monomethylethanolamine (MMEA), piperazine, 2-methylpiperazine, N-ethylpiperazine, N-Hydroxyethylpiperazine (HEP), N- (2-aminoethyl) piperazine, homopiperazine, piperidine and morpholine. Most preferred as promoter is piperazine.

Typically, the feed stream comprises at least one impurity selected from mercaptans, hydrogen sulfide (H)2S), carbon dioxide (CO)2) Carbon Oxysulfide (COS), carbon disulfide (CS)2) And disulfides.

In particular, the feed stream comprises mercaptans and at least one other impurity selected from H2S、CO2、COS、CS2And disulfides.

We have found that even in the presence of other impurities (e.g., H)2S and CO2) Mercaptans, in the presence, can also be effectively removed from the feed stream. The inventors have found that the compound (B) specified herein can act as a physical solvent, while the compound (C) specified herein can act as a chemical solvent, forming a so-called complex solvent. The inventors believe that the pyrrolidone ring in compound (B) provides an improved ability to solubilize thiols while amine compound (C) is capable of reacting with other impurities (e.g., H)2S and CO2) And (4) reacting. Alternatively, the compounds (A) specified herein may act simultaneouslyA physical solvent and a chemical solvent, thereby forming a so-called composite solvent alone. The inventors believe that the pyrrolidone ring in compound (A) provides an increased ability to solubilize thiols, while the tertiary amine substituent on the pyrrolidone ring in compound (A) may be associated with other impurities (e.g. H)2S and CO2) And (4) reacting.

It will be appreciated that in step a), the molar amount of impurities in the impurity-depleted product stream is reduced relative to the molar amount of impurities in the feed stream. In addition, the molar amount of impurities in the enriched absorbent stream is increased relative to the molar amount of impurities in the absorbent stream.

The molar amount of impurities in the impurity-depleted product stream is reduced by at least 5%, preferably at least 10%, more preferably at least 20%, even more preferably at least 30%, yet even more preferably at least 40%, most preferably at least 50% relative to the molar amount of impurities in the feed stream.

The molar amount of impurities in the enriched absorbent stream is increased by at least 5%, preferably at least 10%, more preferably at least 20%, even more preferably at least 30%, still even more preferably at least 40%, most preferably at least 50% relative to the molar amount of impurities in the absorbent stream.

The molar amount of mercaptans in the impurity-depleted product stream is reduced by at least 5%, preferably at least 10%, more preferably at least 20%, even more preferably at least 30%, yet even more preferably at least 40%, most preferably at least 50% relative to the molar amount of mercaptans in the feed stream.

Typical feed streams used in step a) of the process according to the invention, such as natural gas or refinery gas streams and synthesis gas, may comprise valuable hydrocarbons, such as olefins, as well as alkanes, such as methane, ethane, propane, butane, pentane, hexane, heptane and octane.

It will be appreciated that the molar amount of hydrocarbons in the enriched absorbent stream produced in step a) of the process of the present invention is kept low relative to the molar amount of hydrocarbons in the feed stream.

In an embodiment of the method according to the invention, the feed stream comprises carbon dioxide and the CO in the feed stream of step a) is2The amount is at least 5% volume, hereinafter vol%]Preferably at least 10 vol.%, preferably at least 15 vol.%, preferably at least 20 vol.%, preferably at least 25 vol.%, preferably at least 30 vol.%, preferably at least 35 vol.%, preferably at least 40 vol.%, preferably at least 45 vol.%, preferably at least 50 vol.%, preferably at least 55 vol.%, preferably at least 60 vol.%, preferably at least 65 vol.%.

In an embodiment of the process according to the invention, the feed stream comprises hydrogen sulphide, the amount of hydrogen sulphide in the feed stream of step a) being: at least 1 vol.%, preferably at least 5 vol.%, preferably at least 8 vol.%, preferably at least 10 vol.%, preferably at least 12 vol.%, preferably at least 15 vol.%, preferably at least 18 vol.%.

In an embodiment of the process according to the invention, the feed stream comprises carbonyl sulphide and the amount of carbonyl sulphide in the feed stream entering step a) is: at least 0.1ppmv, preferably at least 0.5ppmv, preferably at least 1ppmv, preferably at least 5ppmv, preferably at least 10ppmv, preferably at least 15ppmv, preferably at least 20ppmv, preferably at least 30ppmv, preferably at least 40ppmv, preferably at least 50ppmv, preferably at least 100ppmv, preferably at least 150ppmv, preferably at least 200ppmv, preferably at least 300ppmv, preferably at least 400ppmv, preferably at least 500ppmv, preferably at least 1000ppmv, preferably at least 1500ppmv, preferably at least 2000ppmv, preferably at least 3000ppmv, preferably at least 4000ppmv, preferably at least 5000ppmv, preferably at least 6000ppmv, preferably at least 7000ppmv, preferably at least 8000ppmv, preferably at least 9000ppmv, preferably at least 10000 ppmv. The applicant has found that the absorbent stream according to the invention is particularly effective for removing mercaptans.

In a more preferred embodiment of the process according to the invention, the feed stream comprises mercaptans and the amount of mercaptans in the feed stream to step a) is: at least 0.1 parts per million volume ratio [ parts per milliton by volume, hereinafter ppmv ], preferably at least 0.5ppmv, preferably at least 1ppmv, preferably at least 5ppmv, preferably at least 10ppmv, preferably at least 15ppmv, preferably at least 20ppmv, preferably at least 30ppmv, preferably at least 40ppmv, preferably at least 50ppmv, preferably at least 100ppmv, preferably at least 150ppmv, preferably at least 200ppmv, preferably at least 300ppmv, preferably at least 400ppmv, preferably at least 500ppmv, preferably at least 600ppmv, preferably at least 700ppmv, preferably at least 800ppmv, preferably at least 900ppmv, preferably at least 1000ppmv, preferably at least 1100ppmv, preferably at least 1200ppmv, preferably at least 1300ppmv, preferably at least 1400ppmv, preferably at least 1500ppmv, preferably at least 2000ppmv, preferably at least 3000ppmv, preferably at least 4000ppmv, preferably at least 10000 ppmv. The applicant has found that the absorbent stream according to the invention is particularly effective for removing mercaptans.

It is also to be understood that the term "moving flowing feed stream" may refer to a liquid or gaseous moving flowing feed stream.

In an embodiment of the method according to the invention, the feed stream is a moving flowing feed stream of gas, which is contacted with a liquid static absorbent stream. This example is clearly illustrated in the following example, which is performed on a laboratory scale.

In another embodiment of the process according to the invention, the feed stream is a moving flowing feed stream of liquid or gas, which is contacted with a moving flowing absorbent stream of liquid. This embodiment is clearly illustrated in the absorber column 1 of fig. 1, which absorber column 1 inherently comprises two streams split between the top and the bottom.

In an embodiment of the process according to the invention, step a) is carried out at a pressure of: at least 1 bar gauge (barggauge), preferably at least 5 bar gauge, preferably at least 10 bar gauge, more preferably at least 15 bar gauge, even more preferably at least 20 bar gauge, and yet more preferably at least 25 bar gauge. The applicant has found that the absorbent stream according to the invention is particularly effective and efficient at these higher pressures as exemplified.

In an embodiment of the process according to the invention, step a) is carried out at a pressure of: at most 150 bar gauge, preferably at most 120 bar gauge, more preferably at most 100 bar gauge, even more preferably at most 90 bar gauge. The applicant has found that a higher pressure does not bring much further improvement to the performance of step a). Applicants have found that if the feed stream needs to be pressurized in preparation for step a), the energy of further compression (to achieve a pressure above the levels listed) is generally not reasonable in view of the additional benefits obtainable.

In an embodiment of the method according to the invention, step a) is carried out at a temperature of: at least 10 ℃, preferably at least 20 ℃, more preferably at least 30 ℃, even more preferably at least 40 ℃.

In an embodiment of the method according to the invention, step a) is carried out at a temperature of: at most 90 ℃, preferably at most 80 ℃, more preferably at most 70 ℃, even more preferably at most 65 ℃.

In an embodiment, the process according to the invention further comprises step c), wherein at least part of the regenerated absorbent stream from step b) may be recycled to step a) as at least part of the absorbent stream.

In an embodiment of the method according to the invention, step b) comprises the steps of: in the stripping column, at least a portion of the impurity-enriched absorbent stream obtained from step a) is stripped, by convection with a gas stream containing water vapor, to form a bottom liquid stream, which is the first regenerated absorbent stream for recycling in step c). The applicant has found that stripping as specified above is a very efficient method for breaking the bond between the impurities and the absorbent stream and for separating the impurities from the absorbent stream.

In an embodiment of the method according to the invention, step b) comprises the steps of: flashing at least a portion of the impurity-enriched absorbent stream obtained in step a) to a lower pressure to release an impurity-containing gas stream from the liquid stream, which is the second regenerated absorbent stream for recycling in step c). Applicants have found that flashing can be an even more efficient process than stripping for disrupting the bond between the impurities and the absorbent stream and for separating the impurities from the absorbent stream. Applicants prefer to combine the flashing step with a downstream regeneration step, preferably a steam stripping step.

In an embodiment of the process according to the invention, the second regenerated absorbent stream is recycled to step a). Applicants found that the flashing step may produce a second regenerated absorbent stream, which is suitable for recycling to step a) in step c). This brings about the advantage that: this part of the absorbent stream does not necessarily need to be treated by a more thorough regeneration step, such as by stripping, before it is suitable to participate in step a).

In an embodiment of the process according to the invention, in step b) a first regenerated absorbent stream and a second regenerated absorbent stream are formed for recycling in step c), wherein the second regenerated absorbent stream contains more impurities than the first regenerated absorbent stream, preferably step a) is carried out in an absorption column and the first regenerated absorbent stream is recycled to a top liquid feed tray in the absorption column and the second regenerated absorbent stream is recycled to a middle feed tray in the absorption column, which is located below the top liquid feed tray. The applicant has found that this embodiment makes full use of the presence of the flash step without increasing the risk of breakthrough of impurities in step a), since the feed stream in contact with the second regenerated absorbent stream still has to pass through the region in which it is in contact with the first regenerated absorbent stream.

It is also understood that all definitions and preferences (as described above) of the mixture (M) used in step a) of the process according to the invention apply equally to this and all other examples described below.

Another aspect of the present invention is the mixture (M) as detailed above.

Another aspect of the invention is a composition comprising the mixture (M) as detailed above.

Another aspect of the invention is an absorbent stream comprising the mixture (M) as detailed above.

Another aspect of the invention provides the use of an absorbent stream comprising: mixture (M) as detailed above, or at least 15% by weight of at least one compound (a) as detailed above.

In another aspect, the present invention provides an impurity enriched absorbentA stream comprising at least one absorbed impurity selected from the group consisting of hydrogen sulfide (H)2S), carbon dioxide (CO)2) Carbon Oxysulfide (COS), carbon disulfide (CS)2) A disulfide or thiol; the absorbent stream comprises: mixture (M) as detailed above, or at least 15% by weight of at least one compound (a) as detailed above.

FIG. 1 is a schematic diagram of an apparatus for removing impurities from a gas feed stream according to the process of the present invention. As shown in fig. 1, a gas feed is introduced into the absorption column 1 through a feed inlet 4 for impurity-containing gas. In the packed section 2, a gas feed stream placed in the absorption column 1 is brought into counter-current contact with an absorbent stream fed from a nozzle 7, impurities are absorbed by the absorbent stream and removed from the gas, and the gas depleted in impurities is discharged through an impurity-depleted gas discharge port 5. The absorbent stream fed to the absorption column 1 absorbs impurities and is led to the heat exchanger 14 and the heater 8, heated and led to the regeneration column 15. In the regeneration column 15, the absorbent stream flows through the nozzle 16 and the packed section 17 to the lower part of the column. During this time, impurities are removed to regenerate the absorbent stream. A portion of the absorbent stream at the bottom of the regenerator column is sent through reboiler 27 to produce a vapor stream for stripping the absorbent stream falling from the column. The regenerated absorbent stream is introduced into the heat exchanger 14 and the absorbent stream cooler 26 by the pump 9 and fed back into the absorption column 1 through the absorbent stream feed inlet 6.

On the other hand, in the upper part of the regeneration tower 15, the impurities removed from the absorbent flow are contacted with the reflux water entering from the nozzle 18 and cooled by the regeneration tower reflux condenser 23, and in the reflux tank 21, the gas impurities are separated from the reflux water (formed by condensing the water vapor accompanied with the impurities) and may be introduced to the impurity recovery step through the recovered impurity line 22. The reflux water enters the regeneration tower 15 through a reflux water pump 20.

Examples of the invention

The invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the following examples, which are intended to be illustrative only and are not intended to limit the scope of the invention.

Overall procedure for determining absorbency

All experiments were carried out using a 30g absorbent stream. The laboratory scale absorption experiments were performed by: contacting a feed stream gas mixture comprising 1000ppmv (parts per million by volume) n-butane and 1000ppmv methyl mercaptan (CH) with various absorbent streams at a temperature of 40 ℃ and a pressure of 2 bar3SH) -under nitrogen. The absorption unit of the experiment comprised a double-walled tubular absorber of 7mm diameter, equipped with a thermocouple and heated by a water bath. A back pressure regulator installed downstream of the tubular absorber was used to maintain the pressure within the absorber at a constant pressure. Gas flow rate of 5.1L.h-1The resulting impurity-depleted product stream Gas is depleted in n-butane and methyl mercaptan as the feed stream Gas mixture passes through the absorbent stream in an upward direction until the impurity-enriched absorbent stream becomes saturated.A Gas Chromatography (GC) is used with an Agilent 7890B Gas Chromatograph equipped with split injectors (split injectors) and a flame ionization detector (290 ℃), the composition of the outlet Gas is analyzed at regular intervals.A capillary Rtx-Volatile Amine Column (Rtx-Volatile Amine Column) with a size of 60 meters × 0.32 millimeter ID is used (Rtx-Volatile Amine Column). the GC temperature is set at 40 ℃, Gas samples are injected at a split ratio of 100: 1.OpenLAB Chromatography Data system (OpenLAB Chromatography Data Systems) software is used for Data collection and Data processing.Once at room temperature, the contents are opened, transferred into a glass oven, and sampled for composition analysis to determine the composition of the OpenLAB Chromatography Data system.A continuous cycle of the absorber is evaluated for at least two Lv. 80 ℃ regeneration cycles of the absorber without heating.

In order to compare the performance of the different absorbent streams, the concentration of methyl mercaptan and n-butane in the exit gas was followed in time. The concentration of methyl mercaptan and/or n-butane in the outlet gas is zero as long as the absorbent stream is unsaturated. Once the absorbent stream is nearly saturated, the exit concentration of methyl and/or n-butane (in ppmv) begins to increase (i.e., breakthrough). This breakthrough occurs at different times for different absorbent flows. The solvent loading was estimated by integrating the area above these respective "breakthrough" curves (i.e., ppmv concentration of methyl mercaptan or n-butane in the outlet gas as a function of time (in minutes)) and by subtracting the amount of gas used to fill the absorber headspace. The amount of absorbed methyl mercaptan and n-butane was calculated by writing the following formula:

whereinIs the flow rate of the gas phase (NL.h)-1) And m is the total mass (g) of the absorbent stream.
