Technical Field

The present invention relates to a capsule for containing an infusion product.

In particular, the invention relates to capsules for containing granular, leafy or powdered products, such as coffee, barley, milk powder, tea, camomile and the like.

Background

As is known, capsules for infusion products currently on the market comprise a cup-shaped body having an infusion chamber accessible from the outside through an opening in the body of the cup-shaped body.

The opening is normally closed by a lid to facilitate sealing of the infusion product inside the capsule.

The known type of capsule also has a dispensing outlet communicating the infusion chamber with the outside and comprises a filter arranged inside the infusion chamber, close to the outlet, to filter the beverage before dispensing it to the outside.

Furthermore, capsules of the known type have a collar which projects radially outside the cup-shaped body at the opening and acts as an abutment surface to fasten the lid to the cup-shaped body.

In use, the capsule is inserted into a percolation chamber of a beverage preparation machine.

By making holes in the lid or by using preset through holes, hot pressurized water can be injected into the brewing chamber through the lid. In this way, the water mixes with the infusion product and flows out of the capsule through the dispensing outlet. The filter is able to retain the infusion product inside the infusion chamber from being dispensed to the outside together with the beverage.

The capsules of the known type described above have a number of drawbacks. Typically, the cup-shaped body and collar are made in one piece and are molded from plastic.

The thickness of the collar of capsules of known type is generally greater than 3 mm. However, the thickness of the collar is too great compared to its technical function. In fact, the lid is firmly retained on the cup-shaped body, mainly depending on the extension of the contact surface with the lid body, while the thickness of the collar has no significant influence on the cohesion and stability of the capsule.

However, simply reducing the thickness of the entire collar may lead to compatibility problems with existing beverage preparation machines on the market. In fact, a smaller collar thickness inevitably complicates the clearance with the capsule guiding system already provided on the beverage preparation machine. In fact, generally, the capsule, once inserted in the machine for dispensing the beverage, travels along a path until it is positioned in the percolation chamber and, once used, it travels along a further path to be inserted in the waste bin.

Typically, the guide of the capsule is arranged along said path engaging with the collar.

Thus, the presence of a gap between the collar and the guide member may cause the capsule to jam or be incorrectly positioned in the percolation chamber, resulting in an incorrect dispensing (or failure) of the beverage.

Disclosure of Invention

The object of the present invention is to overcome the above problems and to provide a capsule for infusion products.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a capsule which enables to reduce the consumption of plastic and therefore the cost and the polluting impact of the capsule, while at the same time it can be used in existing machines for extracting beverages without causing blockages or malfunctions.

The technical scheme of the invention is as follows:

capsule for infusion products comprising a cup-shaped body having a longitudinal axis, a bottom and a side wall defining an inner chamber for containing an infusion product and an opening communicating the inner chamber with the outside; the cup-shaped body includes a collar projecting outside the sidewall at the opening; the capsule comprising a lid connected to the collar and closing the opening; the capsule has a variable thickness adjacent the collar.

Detailed Description

In figure 1, the reference numeral 1 indicates as a whole a capsule 1 for infusion products according to the invention. The capsule 1 comprises a cup-shaped body 2 having a longitudinal axis X, a bottom 3 and a side wall 4. Said side walls projecting from the bottom 3 parallel to the longitudinal axis X.

The cup-shaped body 2 also has an opening 5, a dispensing outlet 6 and a brewing chamber (inner chamber) 7, the brewing chamber 7 communicating with the outside through the opening 5 and the dispensing outlet 6. According to the embodiment shown, the perimeter of the opening 5 is defined by the side wall 4 itself. According to the embodiment shown, the dispensing outlet 6 is made through the bottom 3.

According to the embodiment shown, the cup-shaped body 2 has a circular cross-section. According to other embodiments, not shown, the cup-shaped body 2 may have a cross section of different shape, for example it may be polygonal.

The cup-shaped body 2 further comprises a collar 8 projecting outside the side wall 4. According to the embodiment shown, said collar 8 is a substantially circular crown surrounding the lateral wall 4. According to an embodiment not shown, said collar 8 may have a different shape. For example, in the case of a cup-shaped body 2 having a polygonal cross-section, the collar 8 may have a polygonal shape similar to a side wall.

The capsule 1 further comprises a filter 9 housed inside the infusion chamber 7, which at least partially covers the dispensing outlet 6. The capsule 1 further comprises a lid 10 fastened to the collar 8 to close the infusion product p inside the infusion chamber 7.

In particular, the collar 8 has an upper surface 12 arranged to be at least partially in contact with the lid 10, a lower surface 13 substantially opposite the upper surface 12 and a side surface 14.

According to the invention, the thickness of the capsule 1 is different in different areas of the collar 8. By thickness is meant the extension along the axis X.

The terms "top", "bottom", "upper", "lower" and the like are used with reference to the longitudinal axis X when the capsule is placed with the bottom 3 on the support surface.

Advantageously, the capsule 1 comprises one or more adjustment devices 15, each adjustment device 15 being configured to vary the thickness s of the collar 8 at the respective portion 11.

According to the embodiment shown in fig. 1 to 7, the adjustment means 15 is a groove 15I, i.e. a notch, which locally reduces the thickness of the collar 8.

According to the embodiment shown in fig. 1 to 7, the collar 8I has one or more portions 11I of thickness sI and one or more portions 11II of thickness sII. In other words, the collar 8I has a variable thickness. Thickness sII is less than thickness sI.

According to the embodiment shown in fig. 1 to 7, the collar 8I has a thickness sI substantially corresponding to the standard thickness of the collar of known types of capsules. Typically, the collar of the capsule has a standard thickness s of 3-6 mm.

Advantageously, the fact that the collar 8I has at least one bottom 11I having a substantially standard thickness sI allows the capsule 1 to be used also with existing machines for preparing beverages, without the risk of jamming or malfunctioning.

Preferably, each portion 1II has a thickness sII of 0.5mm to 2 mm.

According to the embodiment shown in fig. 1-3, the collar 8I has a pair of grooves 15I arranged parallel and opposite each other with respect to the side wall 4.

In fig. 5-7, having 101 and 201, respectively, two other embodiments of the capsule 1 shown in fig. 1-3 are shown.

Fig. 4-7 show further embodiments of the capsule 1 shown in fig. 1-3.

In the embodiment shown in fig. 4-7, the same elements as the capsule 1 retain the same reference numerals and are considered to be included therein, which are not renumbered for the sake of brevity.

According to the embodiment shown in fig. 4 and 5, the capsule 101 has four recesses 15I. In particular, the capsule 101 has two pairs of grooves parallel and opposite to each other. In the embodiment shown, the pairs of grooves 15I are evenly distributed about the longitudinal axis X. Preferably, two adjacent grooves form an angle of substantially 90 ° with the axis of rotation.

According to the embodiment shown in fig. 5 and 6, the number of grooves 15I is six. In particular, the capsule 201 has three pairs of grooves 15I parallel and opposite each other.

In the embodiment shown, the pairs of grooves 15I are evenly distributed about the longitudinal axis X.

Two adjacent grooves 15I form an angle of 60 ° with the axis of rotation.

According to other embodiments not shown, the collar 8I has only one groove. The collar 8I may have a plurality of grooves 15I different from the embodiment shown. The collar 8I may have grooves 15I of different shapes and sizes. In other words, the collar 8I may have a number and/or shape and/or size of different combinations with respect to those shown.

In fig. 8-11, an example of another embodiment of the capsule of the invention is shown. The same components as the capsule described above retain the same reference numerals and are considered to be included therein and are not repeated for the sake of brevity.

In particular, as shown in fig. 8-11, the adjustment means 15 are projections 15II, i.e. members that locally increase the thickness of the capsule. Advantageously, the boss 15II is adjacent to the collar 8II or made in one piece therewith. In this case, the collar 8II has a reduced thickness sIII with respect to a collar 8II of conventional type.

For example, the collar 8II has a thickness sIII of 0.5mm to 2 mm. In this case, the projection 15II compensates for the difference in thickness between the reduced thickness collar 8II and the standard thickness of conventional capsules. The thickness sIV of the boss 15II is 1mm to 5.5 mm.

In this way, a capsule 301 of the above-described type may be used in a machine for preparing a beverage without the risk of clogging or malfunctioning.

According to the example shown in fig. 8 and 9, the number of the projections 15II is six. The projections 15II are evenly distributed around the longitudinal axis X of the capsule 1. The boss 15II protrudes from the lower surface 13 of the collar 8II and towards the base 3. The raised portion 15II has a curved shape with a concavity facing the side wall 4 of the cup-shaped body 2. According to the embodiment shown in fig. 8 and 9, each boss 15II is laterally limited by a curved edge 16. Thus, advantageously, the curved shape of the rim 16 facilitates the insertion/rotation of the capsule 301 during use, avoiding clogging.

Fig. 10 and 11 show possible further embodiments of the projection 15 II. According to the embodiment shown in fig. 10, the capsule 401 has a projection 15II in the shape of a parallelepiped with a rectangular bottom. According to the embodiment shown in fig. 11, the capsule 501 has a spherical, i.e. circular profile, projection 15 II.

According to embodiments not shown, the shape and/or number and/or size of the projections may vary. According to other embodiments not shown, the raised portions may be adjacent to the upper surface 12 or protrude from the upper surface 12, or may protrude from both the upper surface 12 and the lower surface 13.

Advantageously, the capsule 1, 101, 201 of the invention has a portion 11I of the collar 8I of reduced thickness with respect to a standard capsule.

At the same time, the capsule 301, 401, 501 uses a collar 8II of reduced thickness compared to standard capsules to compensate for the thickness variations of the boss 15II provided near or made integral with the collar 8 II.

The above solution reduces the amount of material, typically plastic, used for manufacturing each capsule 1. This, multiplied by the number of large number of capsules produced/used, greatly reduces the consumption of plastic and thus the pollution/environmental impact.

Advantageously, the capsule 1, 101, 201, 301, 401, 501 of the above-described type can also be used in existing machines for preparing beverages without the risk of jamming/malfunctioning. In fact, the adjustment means 15 are such as to maintain, at least in the region of the collars 8, 8I, 8II, a thickness substantially equal to the standard thickness of capsules of known type. In particular, the thicker zones 11II, 15II of the collar 8 interact with the machine for preparing the beverage, thus preventing malfunctions.
