1. A damped hinge assembly for mounting a first member for rotational movement relative to a base member about a hinge axis, the assembly comprising a first linearly acting damping device and first cam means for converting rotational movement of the first member in a first direction into linear actuation of the first damping device such that the damping device applies a damping resistance to the first member during at least a portion of the movement of the first member in the first direction, wherein the first damping device is mounted with its linear axis coincident with the hinge axis and acts as a fulcrum for the rotational movement of the first member.

2. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the first cam device includes at least one cam surface extending generally helically about the hinge axis.

3. An assembly according to claim 1 or 2, and further mounting a second member for rotational movement relative to the base member about the hinge axis, wherein the assembly further comprises a second damping device for applying a damping resistance to the second member during at least part of its movement in the first direction.

4. The assembly of claim 3, wherein the second damping device is a linear action damping device.

5. An assembly according to claim 4, wherein the second damping device is arranged with its linear axis coincident with the hinge axis such that it acts in conjunction with the first damping device as a fulcrum for the rotational movement of the first and second members.

6. An assembly according to any of claims 3 to 5, and further comprising second cam means for converting rotational movement of said second member in said first direction into linear actuation of said second damping device.

7. The assembly of claim 6, wherein the second cam device includes at least one cam surface extending generally helically about the hinge axis.

8. The assembly according to any of claims 3-7, wherein said first and second damping devices operate independently of each other.

9. An assembly according to any of claims 5 to 8, wherein the first and second dampers are rotatably engaged in hinge blocks on their respective first and second members, and at least one of said members includes a limit stop for maintaining its position along the hinge axis.

10. An assembly according to claim 9, and further comprising a drive mechanism for transmitting rotational movement of the first and second members to their respective first and second damping devices.

11. The assembly of claim 10, wherein each of the drive mechanisms includes a lost motion device to allow a limited amount of free relative rotational movement between the first and second members and their respective first and second damping devices.

12. The assembly of claim 11, wherein the lost motion device comprises at least one cross key and oversized keyway operating between the first and second members and their respective damping devices.
