Detailed Description

The present disclosure provides curable adhesive films, and tapes comprising such films. The present disclosure also provides a primer capable of initiating cure of a curable adhesive film. The present disclosure also provides a second curable film capable of initiating curing of the curable adhesive film. In some embodiments, the curable adhesive film is a pressure sensitive adhesive prior to curing, capable of holding a substrate in place without fixtures and other supports, even under shop or factory conditions prior to curing. The adhesive system of the present invention does not require mixing of liquid components for use. Upon contact with the primed substrate, the curable adhesive film of the present disclosure begins to cure, creating a structural bond. In some embodiments of the adhesive system of the present invention, curing can be achieved at ambient temperature and pressure without the need for heating and autoclaves. Also, in some embodiments of the adhesive system of the present invention, curing can be achieved without ultraviolet radiation treatment and other radiation treatment, and curing spreads well to areas that are difficult to reach for radiation curing. In some embodiments of the adhesive system of the present invention, the components of the adhesive system of the present invention do not require refrigeration, nor storage in the dark. In some embodiments of the adhesive systems of the present invention, the curable adhesive film may be attached to its substrate at the point of manufacture and bonded at different times and/or locations. In some embodiments of the adhesive systems of the present disclosure, a curable adhesive film may be attached to its substrate at a point of manufacture, a second curable film capable of initiating curing of the curable adhesive film may be attached to a second substrate at a second point of manufacture, and the two may be joined at a third time and/or place. Such reducing agents may include salts or esters of ascorbic acid, or may be linked to the ascorbic acid moiety through an ether linkage. Ketals or acetals may also be useful. Suitable salts may include alkali metal salts and alkaline earth metal salts, such as Na, K, Ca and mixtures thereof. Esters of ascorbic acid may include those formed by reacting one or more hydroxyl functional groups of ascorbic acid with a carboxylic acid, particularly a C2-C30 carboxylic acid or a C12-C22 carboxylic acid. The vent channels may help improve contact with the primer or second film that initiates curing of the curable adhesive film by allowing trapped air bubbles to escape. When the adhesive film or tape has one embossed side and one unembossed side, the unembossed side can be placed on a first substrate and then a second substrate can be brought into contact with the embossed side. This approach may be particularly useful in situations where two rigid substrates are to be joined, as it allows for outgassing and accommodation to uneven surfaces, even though the substrates are inflexible.
