Background

The present disclosure relates to laminates having films with a sealant layer containing an ethylene-based polymer and a slip agent.

Film layers formed from ethylene-based polymers are used in films in laminates in a variety of applications, including, for example, food packaging and specialty packaging. Outer laminate layers of ethylene-based polymers require a low coefficient of friction (COF) (e.g., less than 0.35) to effectively process the laminate, such as in a manufacturing line or packaging line. To achieve low COF, slip agents are typically added to the ethylene-based polymer outer layer. Conventional slip agents include unsaturated fatty acid amides, such as erucamide and oleamide, which are known to reduce the COF of the laminate by migrating to the surface of the laminate. However, it is difficult to maintain a consistently low COF using conventional migratory slip agents under different environmental conditions (e.g., time, high temperature, high pressure, and various conversion processes).

The art recognizes the need for a laminate having a film comprising an ethylene-based polymeric composition that can be used in a fast packaging line. The art also recognizes the need for laminates having films comprising ethylene-based polymeric compositions that exhibit a low COF (e.g., less than 0.35) in the absence of a migrating slip agent.

The first film includes a sealant layer comprising: (A) an ethylene-based polymer; and (B) a slip agent blend comprising (i) a first polydimethylsiloxane having a number average molecular weight (Mn) of from 30,000g/mol to less than 300,000 g/mol; and (ii) a second polydimethylsiloxane having a number average molecular weight (Mn) of from 300,000g/mol to 2,000,000 g/mol.

Test method

The coefficient of friction (COF) at 100 millimeters per minute (mm/min) was measured according to ISO8295 (dynamic COF). The substrate used was 304 stainless steel.

The coefficient of friction (COF) at 12 meters per minute (meters per minute) is measured using an "on-line" COF test device described in International publication No. WO 2011/019787, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference, during the test, a roll of sample film or laminate is mounted on a slitter winder and threaded through the on-line COF test device and back to the slitter winder drive rollers the sample motion is controlled using a slitter winder control system, the wrap angle (β) on the surface of a 304 stainless steel static roller is 0.52 radians, during the test, the sealant layer of the sample film or laminate is in contact with the static roller surface, the dynamic COF is tested at a sample line speed of 12 meters per minute2=T1eμβWherein T is1Tension of the sample before winding on the static roller, T2μ is the COF for the tension of the sample after winding on the static roll, and β is the wrap angle on the surface of the static roll.

Density is measured according to ASTM D792, method B. The results are reported in grams per cubic centimeter (g/cc).

Melt Index (MI) in grams/10 minutes was measured using ASTM D-1238-04(190 ℃/2.16kg) (I2).

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) can be used to measure the melting, crystallization and glass transition behavior of polymers over a wide range of temperatures. This analysis is performed, for example, using a TA instrument (tasinstruments) Q1000 DSC equipped with a Refrigerated Cooling System (RCS) and an autosampler. During the test, a nitrogen purge gas flow of 50 ml/min was used. Melt pressing each sample at 190 ℃ into a film; the molten sample was then air cooled to room temperature (25 ℃). A 3-10mg, 6mm diameter sample was taken from the cooled polymer, weighed, placed in a lightweight aluminum pan (50mg), and crimped closed. And then analyzed to determine its thermal properties.

The thermal behavior of the sample is determined by ramping the temperature of the sample up and down to produce a heat flow versus temperature curve. First, the sample was rapidly heated to 180 ℃ and kept isothermal for 3 minutes in order to remove its thermal history. Next, the sample was cooled to-80 ℃ at a cooling rate of 10 degrees Celsius per minute and held isothermal for 3 minutes at-80 ℃. The sample was then heated to 180 ℃ (this is a "second heat" ramp) at a 10 degree celsius/minute heating rate. The cooling and second heating profiles were recorded. The values determined are the extrapolated onset of melting Tm and the extrapolated onset of crystallization Tc. Heat of fusion (Hf) (in joules/gram) the% crystallinity of the polyethylene samples was calculated using the following equation: % crystallinity ((Hf)/292J/g) × 100; and the% crystallinity of the polyethylene sample was calculated using the following equation: % crystallinity ((Hf)/292J/g) × 100. The heat of fusion (Hf) and peak melting temperature are reported from the second heating curve. The peak crystallization temperature was determined from the cooling curve.

The melting point Tm is determined from the DSC heating curve by first plotting a baseline between the beginning and end of the melting transition. The tangent is then plotted for the data on the low temperature side of the melting peak. The point where this tangent intersects the baseline is the extrapolated onset of crystallization (Tc). This is described in Bernhard Wunderlich, basis for Thermal Analysis in Thermal Characterization of polymeric materials (the basis of Thermal Analysis, in Thermal Characterization of polymeric materials) 92,277-278 (edited by Edith A. Turi, 2 nd edition 1997).

Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC)

A high temperature Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) system equipped with a Robot Assisted Delivery (RAD) system was used for sample preparation and sample injection. The concentration detector was an infrared detector (IR-5) from Polymer Char corporation, Balncia, Spain. Data collection was performed using a Polymer Char DM 100 data acquisition box. The carrier solvent is 1,2, 4-Trichlorobenzene (TCB). The system was equipped with an online solvent degassing unit from Agilent. The column compartment was operated at 150 ℃. The columns were four Mixed ALS 30cm 20 micron columns. The solvent was 1,2, 4-Trichlorobenzene (TCB) purged with nitrogen containing about 200ppm of 2, 6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol ("BHT"). The flow rate was 1.0 ml/min and the injection volume was 200. mu.l. Sample concentration of "2 mg/mL" was determined by subjecting the sample to N at 160 ℃ with gentle stirring2Purged and preheated TCB (containing 200ppm BHT) for 2.5 hours.

The GPC column set was calibrated by running twenty narrow molecular weight distribution polystyrene standards. The Molecular Weight (MW) of the standards ranged from 580g/mol to 8,400,000g/mol, and the standards were contained in six "cocktail" mixtures. There is at least a tenfold separation between the individual molecular weights in each standard mixture. Equivalent polypropylene molecular weights for each PS standard were determined by using the following equations, as well as the reported Mark-Houwink coefficients for polypropylenes (Th.G.Scholte, N.L.J.Meijerink, H.M.Schofelers and A.M.G.Brands, in journal of applied Polymer science (J.Appl.Polymer.Sci., 29,3763-3782(1984)) and polystyrenes (E.P.Otoka, R.J.roe, N.Y.Hellman and P.M.Muglia, Macromolecules (Macromolecules), 4,507(1971)), (Th.G.To calculate:wherein M isppIs PP equivalent MW, MPSFor PS equivalent MW, log K and a values for the mark-houwink coefficients of PP and PS are listed below.

Examples of the invention

The materials used in the examples are provided in table 1 below.

TABLE 1

Figure BDA0002301923180000321

1Based on the average of three samples.

Multilayer film samples were made on an Alpine coextrusion line under the following conditions: average film thickness 50 μm; blow-up ratio (b.u.r.) -2.5; the diameter of the die is 200 mm; the die gap is 2.5 mm; temperature curve-extruder a 150-; temperature curve-extruder B200-; temperature profile-extruder C200-; the temperature of the mould is 220 ℃; corona treatment-40 dynes; the output rate is 120 kg/h; and a layer distribution ratio of 15:70:15(a: B: C). The bubble was opened and cut into rolls of 40cm wide.

The layer configuration is provided in table 2 below. Each multilayer film structure is formed from (a) a sealant layer having a volume of 15% by volume of the multilayer film, (B) a core layer having a volume of 70% by volume of the multilayer film, and (C) a release layer having a volume of 15% by volume of the multilayer film. The multilayer film has the following structure: sealant layer (A)/core layer (B)/release layer (C). The sealant layer is in direct contact with the core layer, and the core layer is in direct contact with the release layer. In table 2, "CS" refers to a comparative sample.

Each PDMS was included in the sealant layer as part of a masterbatch (MB25-502, MB25-635, MB25-035, or MB50-613), with the PDMS dispersed in either an LDPE matrix or an LLDPE matrix. Table 2 provides the individual amounts of each PDMS and LDPE/LLDPE matrix included in the sealant layer. For example, the sealant layer of film example 1 included 0.5 wt% PDMS a from MB25-502 (with an Mn of 48,400g/mol, as provided in table 1) and 1.5 wt% LDPE a from MB25-502, based on the total weight of the sealant layer. Thus, the sealant layer of film example 1 contained a total amount of 2.0 wt% MB25-502, based on the total weight of the sealant layer. The sealant layer of film example 1 also included 1.5 wt% PDMS B from MB25-635 (with Mn of 356,700g/mol, as provided in table 1) and 4.5 wt% LDPE B from MB25-635, based on the total weight of the sealant layer. Thus, the sealant layer of film example 1 contained a total amount of 6.0 wt% MB25-635, based on the total weight of the sealant layer.

Multilayer film samples were tested for COF. The results are provided in table 2 below.

+Total wt% slip agent refers to the total amount of slip agent present in the sealant layer, based on the total weight of the sealant layer.

By slip agents in the sealant layerMn is in the range of 30,000g/mol to less than 300,000g/mol wt% of PDMS, based on the total weight.

Mn is in the range of 300,000g/mol to 2,000,000g/mol wt% of PDMS based on the total weight of slip agent in the sealant layer.

The sealant layer COF at 12 meters/minute was measured on an "on-line" COF test apparatus.

The multilayer film samples of Table 2 were passed through a Labo Combi from Nodemeck Group (Nordmedica Group)TMAn L400 laminator (pilot coater) was laminated to the PET film (12 μm thick) with an adhesive. During lamination, the multilayer film samples of table 2 were placed on a first tape spool, placed on a first unwinder at a tension of 1.7kg, and the PET film was placed on a second tape spool, placed on a second unwinder at a tension of 2 kg. The laminator was equipped with three chromium plated steel rollers heated at 45 ℃. The PET film was coated with adhesive by pouring the adhesive between the batch rolls while unwinding from the first unwinder. The adhesive was added at 1.9g/m2The coating weight of (a) was applied to the PET film. The adhesive coated PET film was then pressed against the multilayer film sample as it was unwound from the second unwinder via a lamination calender and a pressure roller. The laminator speed was 100 m/min, the nip temperature was 50 ℃ and the pressure was 3bar (300 kilopascals (kPa)). The laminate was then wound on a winding reel with a tension of 4 kg. The laminate was cured at room temperature (23 ℃) for 6 days. The resulting laminate has the following structure (a): multilayer film sample/adhesive layer/PET film. In other words, the resulting laminate has the following structure (a): sealant layer/core layer/release layer/adhesive layer/PET film. The laminate structure configuration is provided in table 3 below.

The laminate structure was tested for COF. The results are provided in table 3 below.

CThe bag of CS 15 was equipped with Nitoflon around the central block of the feeding unitTMAdhesive tapes were prepared on a VFFS line.

The laminate COF at 12 meters/min was measured on an "on-line" COF test apparatus.

Applicants have surprisingly found that a film comprising the same PET film and adhesive layer but having a composition comprising (A) an ethylene-based polymer (AFFINITY)TMPL 1880G and LDPE) and (B) a single slip agent (film CS 2) -rather than a sealant layer of a slip agent blend (CS 10, CS 15, CS 17) compared to a comparative laminate having a PET film, an adhesive layer and a sealant layer containing (a) an ethylene-based polymer (AFFINITY)TMPL 1880G and LDPE or LLDPE) and (B) a slip agent blend comprising (i) a first pdms having an Mn of 30,000 to less than 300,000G/mol (pdms a); and (ii) a second PDMS (PDMS B, PDMS C, PDMSD)) having an Mn of from 300,000g/mol to 2,000,000g/mol (Ex.12-Ex.19) advantageously exhibits a lower laminate COF at 12 m/min (for a laminate having a surface containing MOR-FREE)TM698A/MOR-FREETMA laminate of an adhesive layer of C-79,<0.56) (for the polypeptide with MOR-FREE)TM715A/CR-84,<0.52)。

the laminate was then mounted in a Bosch frameTMThe pillow pouch is formed on a Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS) line (model SVE2520 WR). The VFFS production line is a continuous motion vertical bagger. For CS 15, the VFFS line was equipped with Nitoflon from nitto Denko around the center block of the feed unitTMAdhesive tape to reduce friction between the sealant layer of the laminate and the metal center feed block of the VFFS production line. The pillow pouch is formed from a single piece of laminate that is folded over itself and heat sealed to form a top seal, a bottom seal, and a center fold seal. The pillow pouch had a length of 230mm and a width of 150 mm. The sealing strip temperature was set at 180 ℃ with a sealing time of 50 milliseconds and pressureThe force was 2.5 kilonewtons. The speed of the VFFS production line is measured in number of airtight bags formed per minute (p-p-m). No filler was used during the test. The results are provided in table 3 above.

The air tightness of the pillow bags was tested by placing 10 pillow bags under water in a closed tank, in which a vacuum of 0.6bar (60kPa) was applied. After 30 seconds, the pillow pouch was visually inspected. If no air bubbles come out of the pillow bag, the pillow bag is considered to be airtight. If air bubbles come out of the pillow bag, the pillow bag is considered to be non-airtight. The percentage of air tightness is the percentage of pillow bags found to be air tight. The results are reported in table 3.

As shown in Table 3, pillow bags made from the comparative laminates were either (i) not formable (CS 10 and CS 17) or (ii) at a low speed (i.e., a low speed)<100 p-p-m) (CS 15), the comparative laminate comprising a sealant layer comprising: (A) ethylene-based polymers (AFFINITY)TMPL 1880G and LDPE) and (B) a single slip agent (film CS 2) -rather than a slip agent blend.

Applicants have surprisingly found that pillow bags formed from a laminate comprising a sealant layer comprising: (A) ethylene-based polymers (AFFINITY)TMPL 1880G and LDPE or LLDPE) and (B) a slip agent blend comprising (i) a first pdms having an Mn of 30,000 to less than 300,000G/mol (pdms a); and (ii) a second PDMS (PDMS B, PDMS C or PDMS D) having an Mn of 300,000 to 2,000,000 g/mol.

It is specifically intended that the present disclosure not be limited to the embodiments and illustrations contained herein, but include modified forms of those embodiments including portions of the embodiments and combinations of elements of different embodiments as come within the scope of the following claims.
