Technical Field

The present invention relates to an optical repeater, a control method of the optical repeater, and an optical transmission system, and more particularly, to an optical repeater suitable for use in a Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) communication system, a control method of the optical repeater, and an optical transmission system.

Background

An optical transmission system of the WDM communication method can improve transmission efficiency by transmitting a multi-wavelength optical signal using one optical fiber. As the amount of data increases, it is necessary to expand a transmission bandwidth in a WDM communication system and use a broadband transmission system using both a conventional band (C-band) and a long band (L-band). Typically, the bandwidth of the C-band is 1525nm to 1570nm, while the bandwidth of the L-band is 1570nm to 1610 nm. In a broadband transmission system using both the C-band and the L-band, a C + L-band repeater is used. In the C + L band repeater, a method of optical amplification by using an Erbium Doped Fiber (EDF) is widely used.

Patent document 1(PTL1) relates to an erbium-doped fiber amplifier, and proposes to reenter a C-band of Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) generated during amplification in an optical fiber amplification unit into the optical fiber amplification unit in order to improve gain.

Fig. 9 is a block diagram illustrating an optical repeater according to an exemplary embodiment based on the present general inventive concept. The optical repeater in fig. 9 is a C + L-band repeater inserted between a first transmission path fiber and a second transmission path fiber, not shown. The optical repeater in fig. 9 includes a first optical fiber amplification unit 53, and the first optical fiber amplification unit 53 is inserted in the first line 51 and amplifies a C-band signal or an L-band signal. The first fiber amplifying unit 53 is a C-band dedicated amplifier or an L-band dedicated amplifier. Further, the optical repeater in fig. 9 includes a second optical fiber amplification unit 54, and the second optical fiber amplification unit 54 is inserted in the second line 52 and amplifies the C-band signal or the L-band signal. The second fiber amplifying unit 54 is a C-band dedicated amplifier or an L-band dedicated amplifier.

Further, the optical repeater in fig. 9 includes an insertion device 55, and the insertion device 55 inserts some or all of the wavelengths of light output from the first optical fiber amplification unit 53 in the second optical fiber amplification unit 54, or inserts some or all of the wavelengths of light output from the second optical fiber amplification unit 54 in the first optical fiber amplification unit 53.

The insertion device 55 inserts some or all of the wavelengths of light output from the first fiber amplification unit 53 as dummy light into the second fiber amplification unit 54. Alternatively, the insertion device 55 inserts some or all of the wavelengths of light output from the second fiber amplification unit 54 as dummy light in the first fiber amplification unit 53.

For example, when light of a C-band wavelength close to the L-band is input to the optical fiber amplification unit that amplifies the L-band, the optical fiber amplification unit that amplifies the L-band amplifies the optical power of the L-band short-wave side wavelength in a reduced state.

[ first embodiment ]

First, an optical repeater, a control method of the optical repeater, and an optical transmission system according to a first exemplary embodiment of the present invention are described. Fig. 1 is a block diagram showing an optical transmission system including a C + L band repeater according to a first exemplary embodiment of the present invention.

(construction Explanation)

In the optical transmission system of fig. 1, the C + L-band repeater 1A is inserted in the transmission path optical fiber. It is assumed that, among signals input from the transmission path fiber to the C + L-band repeater 1A, WDM signals of both the C-band and the L-band are multiplexed.

The C + L band repeater 1A in fig. 1 includes a C/L splitter 4, a C band EDFA2 as one example of a first optical fiber amplification unit, an L band EDFA3 as one example of a second optical fiber amplification unit, a C/L coupler 5, and a signal detection unit 10.

The C/L splitter 4 performs wavelength separation and splits the input WDM signal into C-band/L-band. The C-band EDFA2 amplifies the main signal of the C-band. The L-band EDFA3 amplifies the L-band main signal. The C/L coupler 5 performs wavelength multiplexing on the C-band signal amplified in the C-band EDFA2 and the L-band signal amplified in the L-band EDFA 3. The signal detection unit 10 outputs a control signal in response to a control input from the outside.

Further, as an example of an insertion device that inserts some or all of the wavelengths of light output from the C-band EDFA2 into the L-band EDFA3, the C + L-band repeater 1A in fig. 1 includes an optical blocker 9, a band-pass filter 8(BPF 8), an optical coupler 6, and an optical coupler 7.

The optical coupler 6 performs intensity branching on light output by the C-band EDFA 2. The optical blocker 9 transmits or blocks the C-band signal from the optical coupler 6 according to the input control signal. According to the present exemplary embodiment, a control signal is output to the light blocker 9 through the signal detection unit 10 that receives a control input from the outside. The band-pass filter 8(BPF 8) transmits a part of the light of the C-band wavelength as the output signal of the optical blocker 9. The optical coupler 7 multiplexes the light of the C-band wavelength, which is an output signal of the BPF 8, with the input of the L-band EDFA 3. In the C + L band repeater 1A of fig. 1, the arrangement order of the light blocker 9 and the BPF 8 may be reversed.

(instructions)

The operation of the C + L band repeater 1A in fig. 1 is described. It is assumed that WDM signals of both the C-band and the L-band are multiplexed in the optical signal input from the transmission path fiber to the C + L-band repeater 1A.

In the C/L splitter 4, the input C + L band signal is subjected to wavelength branching into respective bands. The C-band signal branched in the C/L splitter 4 is optically amplified in the C-band EDFA2 and intensity-branched in the optical coupler 6, and one of the branched signals is input to the C/L coupler 5. The L band signal branched in the C/L splitter 4 is transmitted through an optical coupler 7, amplified in the L band EDFA3, and input to the C/L coupler 5. The C/L coupler 5 multiplexes the amplified light of the C-band wavelength and the amplified light of the L-band wavelength, and outputs the multiplexed light to the transmission path fiber.

According to the present exemplary embodiment, a path for inputting the output light of the C-band EDFA2 to the L-band EDFA3 exists between the optical coupler 6 and the optical coupler 7, and the optical blocker 9 and the BPF 8 are arranged in the path. In a normal state, the light blocker 9 is blocked, and only when there is a control input from the signal detection unit 10, the C-band signal is transmitted through the L-band path.

Fig. 2A is a diagram showing a relationship between the wavelength and the optical power of the signal light transmitted in the C + L band transmission system in a normal state. Fig. 2B is a graph showing a relationship between the wavelength and the optical power of the signal light transmitted in the C + L band transmission system in the long-term operation state. In general, in signal light transmitted in a C + L band transmission system, as shown in fig. 2A, the optical level of each wavelength is in a fixed state. However, when the transmission system is operated for a long period of time and loss due to maintenance of the transmission path fiber or the like is accumulated in the entire transmission system, gain skew on the short-wave side occurs in both the C-band and the L-band, as shown in fig. 2B. Specifically, the deviation of the short-wavelength side wavelength in both wavelength bands is large, and as the channel power increases, the signal quality may decrease due to the nonlinear optical effect.

In general, the gain of an EDFA has wavelength dependence, and therefore the short wavelength side or the long wavelength side rises depending on the gain. The EDFA is adjusted to a band-flat gain in the initial stage of installing the transmission system and the repeater (fig. 2A), but when the loss in the transmission path increases due to the above-described situation, the gain of the EDFA increases in a manner of compensating for the loss. The gain of the EDFA increases in a manner that compensates for the loss, so the band shifts from achieving a flat gain, and has a gain skew as shown in fig. 2B.

In the C + L band repeater 1A of fig. 1, when gain skew or gain deviation occurs as described above, the signal detection unit 10 releases the optical blocker 9 based on a control input from the outside and transmits light through an L band path leading to the input of the L band EDFA 3. In the BPF 8, according to the present exemplary embodiment, as shown in fig. 2C, light of certain wavelengths is extracted from the light transmitted through the optical blocker 9, that is, only light of a wavelength close to the L-band is extracted, and the extracted light is multiplexed with the input of the L-band EDFA3 in the optical coupler 7. In this case, a C-band wavelength close to the L-band is input to the L-band EDFA3, and therefore, as shown in fig. 2C, the optical power of the L-band short-wave side wavelength is amplified in a reduced state.

(description of advantageous effects)

In the C + L band repeater 1A according to the present exemplary embodiment, only light of a wavelength of the L band close to the output light of the C band EDFA2 is multiplexed with the input of the L band EDFA3 in the optical coupler 7 through a path for inputting the output light of the C band EDFA2 to the L band EDFA 3. Thereby, the optical power of the L-band short-wave side wavelength is reduced, and the L-band EDFA3 amplifies the optical signal. The channel power on the L-band short wave side of the L-band EDFA3 is reduced, whereby it is possible to reduce signal quality degradation and optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) deviation due to the nonlinear optical effect of the L-band to be transmitted.

It is assumed that the C/L coupler 5 generally has a characteristic of blocking light of a wavelength different from the wavelength input from the input port of each of the C-band and the L-band. It is assumed that the C/L coupler 5 has characteristics such as blocking light of an L-band wavelength with respect to an optical signal input from an input port of a C-band of the C/L coupler 5 and blocking light of a C-band wavelength with respect to an optical signal input from an input port of an L-band of the coupler. Therefore, the C-band wavelength input to the L-band EDFA3 for adjusting gain deviation and gain skew is blocked in the C/L coupler 5, and there is an advantage of reducing crosstalk degradation due to re-coupling of light of the C-band wavelength. Further, the branch path is designed so that light of a C-band wavelength enters the L-band EDFA3 from the output end of the C-band EDFA2, and therefore there is also an advantage that loss in the main path of the optical coupler 6 of the C-side path can be reduced from the viewpoint of horizontal balance.

It has been described that, according to the above-described exemplary embodiment, as shown in fig. 2C, in the optical coupler 7, only light of a wavelength of the L band close to the output light of the C-band EDFA2 is multiplexed with the input of the L-band EDFA3, and the L-band EDFA3 amplifies an optical signal while reducing the optical power of the L-band short-wave-side wavelength, but the correction or control of the gain skew and the gain deviation according to the exemplary embodiment of the present invention is not limited thereto. According to an example embodiment, although a band included in the C band and close to the L band contributes to the correction of the gain deviation, it may be configured in such a manner that the entire wavelength bandwidth of the C band is inserted into the L band EDFA 3.

Further, by controlling an increase/decrease of output power or optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of the entire bandwidth of the L-band EDFA as controlling the optical intensity, wavelength range, or a combination thereof in which the C-band light is inserted, it is possible to balance the main signal quality between the C-band and the L-band, etc.

The BPF 8 can transmit not only light of a wavelength of the L band close to the output light of the C-band EDFA2 but also light of a wide range of wavelengths transmitted throughout the C-band. The operation of controlling the gain skew of the light of the L-band wavelength as shown in fig. 2D may be applied by setting the bandwidth, the wavelength arrangement position, and the level of the transmitted light of the C-band wavelength. For example, the gain skew of the output of the L-band EDFA3 may be compensated by an increase/decrease in the wavelength range and an increase/decrease in the optical power of the light output from the C-band EDFA2 and multiplexed with the input of the L-band EDFA 3. By controlling the C-band light as indicated by the arrow in fig. 2D, the gain skew of the output of the L-band EDFA can be compensated as indicated by the arrow in fig. 2D. Further, when the entire C-band is used as correction light to correct the gain skew and gain deviation of the output of the L-band EDFA3, it may be configured in such a manner that the BPF 3 is not required.

[ second example embodiment ]

Next, an optical repeater, a control method of the optical repeater, and an optical transmission system according to a second exemplary embodiment of the present invention are described. Fig. 3 is a block diagram showing an optical transmission system including a C + L band repeater according to a second exemplary embodiment of the present invention. According to the present exemplary embodiment, in contrast to the first exemplary embodiment, the output light of the L-band EDFA3 is multiplexed with the input of the C-band EDFA2 through a path for inputting the output light of the L-band EDFA3 to the C-band EDFA 2. Elements similar to corresponding elements of the first exemplary embodiment are assigned the same reference numerals, and thus detailed description is omitted.

(construction Explanation)

In the optical transmission system of fig. 3, the C + L-band repeater 1B is inserted in the transmission path optical fiber. Similarly to the first exemplary embodiment, it is assumed that WDM signals of both the C-band and the L-band are multiplexed in the signal input from the transmission path fiber to the C + L-band repeater 1B.

Similar to the first exemplary embodiment, the C + L band repeater 1B in fig. 3 includes a C/L splitter 4, a C band EDFA2 as one example of a first optical fiber amplification unit, an L band EDFA3 as one example of a second optical fiber amplification unit, a C/L coupler 5, and a signal detection unit 10.

Further, as an example of an insertion device that inserts some or all of the wavelengths of light output from the L-band EDFA3 into the C-band EDFA2, the C + L-band repeater 1B in fig. 3 includes an optical blocker 9, a band-pass filter 8(BPF 8), an optical coupler 306, and an optical coupler 307.

The optical coupler 307 performs intensity branching on the light output by the L-band EDFA 3. The optical blocker 9 transmits or blocks the L-band signal from the optical coupler 307 in response to the input control signal. According to the present exemplary embodiment, similarly to the first exemplary embodiment, a control signal is output to the light blocker 9 through the signal detection unit 10 that receives a control input from the outside. The band-pass filter 8(BPF 8) transmits a part of the light of the L-band wavelength of the output signal of the optical blocker 9. The optical coupler 306 multiplexes the L-band wavelength light of the output signal of the BPF 8 with the input of the C-band EDFA 2. In the C + L band repeater 1B of fig. 3, the arrangement order of the light blocker 9 and the BPF 8 may be reversed.

(instructions)

The operation of the C + L band repeater 1B in fig. 3 is described. It is assumed that WDM signals of both the C-band and the L-band are multiplexed in the optical signal input from the transmission path fiber to the C + L-band repeater 1B.

In the C/L splitter 4, the input C + L band signal is subjected to wavelength branching into respective bands. The L band signal branched in the C/L splitter 4 is optically amplified in the L band EDFA3 and intensity-branched in the optical coupler 307, and one of the branched signals is input to the C/L coupler 5. The C band signal branched in the C/L splitter 4 is transmitted through the optical coupler 306, amplified in the C band EDFA2, and input to the C/L coupler 5. The C/L coupler 5 multiplexes the amplified light of the C-band wavelength and the amplified light of the L-band wavelength, and outputs the multiplexed light to the transmission path fiber.

According to the present exemplary embodiment, a path for inputting the output light of the L-band EDFA3 to the C-band EDFA2 exists between the optical coupler 307 and the optical coupler 306, and the optical blocker 9 and the BPF 8 are arranged in the path. In a normal state, the light blocker 9 is blocked, and only when there is a control input from the signal detection unit 10, the L-band signal is transmitted through the C-band path.

In the C + L band repeater 1B of fig. 3, when gain skew or gain deviation occurs as shown in fig. 2B, the signal detection unit 10 releases the optical blocker 9 based on a control input from the outside and transmits light through the C band path leading to the input of the C band EDFA 2. In the BPF 8, only light of certain wavelengths is extracted from the light transmitted through the optical blocker 9, and the extracted light is multiplexed with the input of the C-band EDFA2 in the optical coupler 306.

(description of advantageous effects)

In the C + L band repeater 1B according to the present exemplary embodiment, the output light of the L band EDFA3 is multiplexed with the input of the C band EDFA2 in the optical coupler 306 through a path for inputting the output light of the L band EDFA3 to the C band EDFA 2. Thereby, the channel power of the C-band EDFA2 is reduced, whereby the signal quality degradation and the OSNR deviation due to the nonlinear optical effect of the C-band to be transmitted can be reduced.

As described according to the first exemplary embodiment, the C/L coupler 5 generally has a characteristic of blocking light of a wavelength different from the wavelength input from the input port of each of the C-band and the L-band. Therefore, according to the present exemplary embodiment, there is an advantage in that light of an L-band wavelength input into the C-band EDFA2 for adjusting gain deviation and gain skew is blocked in the C/L coupler 5 and crosstalk degradation due to re-coupling of light of an L-band wavelength is reduced. Further, the branch path is designed so that light of the L-band wavelength enters the C-band EDFA2 from the output end of the L-band EDFA3, and therefore there is also an advantage that loss in the main path of the optical coupler 6 of the L-side path can be reduced from the viewpoint of horizontal balance.

According to the first exemplary embodiment, the output of branching the C band, which is input into the L band EDFA3 and controlled, and controlling the gain skew and gain deviation of the light of the L band wavelength has been described, and according to the second exemplary embodiment, the output branching of branching the L band, which is input into the C band EDFA2 and controlled, and controlling the gain skew and gain deviation of the light of the C band wavelength has been described. However, by combining the C + L band repeater 1A in fig. 1 and the C + L band repeater 1B in fig. 3, a configuration capable of correcting or controlling the gain skew and the gain deviation with respect to both the C band and the L band can be obtained. Also, according to an example embodiment described later, it is possible to realize a configuration in which only one band is corrected and a configuration in which two bands are corrected at the same time.

[ third example embodiment ]

Next, an optical repeater, a control method of the optical repeater, and an optical transmission system according to a third exemplary embodiment of the present invention are described. Fig. 4A is a block diagram showing an optical transmission system including a C + L band repeater according to a third exemplary embodiment of the present invention. The present exemplary embodiment is a modified example of the C + L band repeater 1A in fig. 1. Elements similar to corresponding elements of the first exemplary embodiment are assigned the same reference numerals, and thus detailed description is omitted.

(construction Explanation)

In the optical transmission system of fig. 4A, the C + L-band repeater 1C is inserted in the transmission path optical fiber. It is assumed that WDM signals of both the C-band and the L-band are multiplexed in a signal input from the transmission path fiber to the C + L-band repeater 1C.

Similar to the first exemplary embodiment, the C + L band repeater 1C in fig. 4A includes a C/L splitter 4, a C band EDFA2 as one example of a first optical fiber amplification unit, an L band EDFA3 as one example of a second optical fiber amplification unit, a C/L coupler 5, and a signal detection unit 10.

Further, as one example of an insertion device that inserts some or all of the wavelengths of light output from the C-band EDFA2 into the L-band EDFA3, the C + L-band repeater 1C in fig. 4A includes an optical blocker 9, a band-pass filter 407(BPF407), and an optical coupler 6. In other words, the C + L band repeater 1C in fig. 4A includes the band-pass filter 407(BPF407) instead of the BPF 8 and the optical coupler 7 in fig. 1.

The BPF407 according to the present exemplary embodiment includes a function of performing wavelength multiplexing of the light of the C-band wavelength from the optical blocker 9 and the light of the L-band wavelength of the L-band main path from the C/L splitter 4. By using the BPF407 including such a function, the loss in the L-band main path can be reduced with respect to the optical coupler 7 in fig. 1. Further, both the C-band wavelength selection function and the multiplexing function are included in the BPF407, and thus the number of components can be reduced.

(instructions)

The operation of the C + L band repeater 1C in fig. 4A is described. It is assumed that WDM signals of both the C-band and the L-band are multiplexed in the optical signal input from the transmission path fiber to the C + L-band repeater 1C.

In the C/L splitter 4, the input C + L band signal is wavelength-branched into respective wavelength bands. The C-band signal branched in the C/L splitter 4 is optically amplified in the C-band EDFA2 and intensity-branched in the optical coupler 6, and one of the branched signals is input to the C/L coupler 5. The L band signal branched in the C/L splitter 4 is wavelength-multiplexed in the BPF407, amplified in the L band EDFA3, and input to the C/L coupler 5. The C/L coupler 5 multiplexes the amplified light of the C-band wavelength and the amplified light of the L-band wavelength, and outputs the multiplexed light to the transmission path fiber.

According to the present exemplary embodiment, a path for inputting the output light of the C-band EDFA2 to the L-band EDFA3 exists between the optical coupler 6 and the BPF407, and the optical blocker 9 and the BPF407 are arranged in the path. In a normal state, the light blocker 9 is blocked, and only when there is a control input from the signal detection unit 10, the C-band signal is transmitted through the L-band path.

In the C + L band repeater 1C of fig. 4A, when gain skew or gain deviation occurs as described above, the signal detection unit 10 releases the optical blocker 9 based on a control input from the outside and transmits light through an L band path leading to the input of the L band EDFA 3. In the BPF407, light of certain wavelengths is extracted from the light transmitted through the optical blocker 9, that is, only light of a wavelength close to the L band is extracted according to the present exemplary embodiment, and the extracted light is multiplexed with the input of the L band EDFA 3.

(description of advantageous effects)

In the C + L band repeater 1C according to the present exemplary embodiment, only light of a wavelength of the L band close to the output light of the C band EDFA2 is multiplexed with the input of the L band EDFA3 in the BPF407 through a path for inputting the output light of the C band EDFA2 to the L band EDFA 3. Thereby, the L-band EDFA3 amplifies the optical signal while the optical power of the L-band short-wave side wavelength is reduced. The channel power on the L-band short wave side of the L-band EDFA3 is reduced, and thus it is possible to reduce the deterioration of signal quality and OSNR deviation due to the nonlinear optical effect of the L-band to be transmitted.

Further, according to the present exemplary embodiment, the BPF407 that performs wavelength multiplexing of the light of the C-band wavelength from the optical blocker 9 and the light of the L-band wavelength of the L-band main path from the C/L splitter 4 is used. Therefore, in the C + L band repeater 1C according to the present exemplary embodiment, the loss in the L band main path can be reduced with respect to the optical coupler 7 in fig. 1. Further, both the C-band wavelength selection function and the multiplexing function are included in the BPF407, and thus the number of components can be reduced.

In other words, the C + L band repeater 1D in fig. 4B includes the band-pass filter 406(BPF 406) instead of the BPF 8 and the optical coupler 6 in fig. 1.

The BPF 406 of the present exemplary embodiment includes a function of performing wavelength branching to two paths for WDM light input from a common port. One of the two paths is a C-band main path and is output to the C/L coupler 5, and the other is output to the light blocker 9. A path for inputting the output light of the C-band EDFA2 to the L-band EDFA3 exists between the BPF 406 and the optical coupler 7, and the BPF 406 and the light blocker 9 are arranged in the path. In a normal state, the light blocker 9 is blocked, and only when there is a control input from the signal detection unit 10, the C-band signal is transmitted through the L-band path.

In the C + L band repeater 1D of fig. 4B, when gain skew or gain deviation occurs as described above, the signal detection unit 10 releases the optical blocker 9 based on a control input from the outside and transmits the C band light through an L band path leading to the input of the L band EDFA 3. The C-band light transmitted through the optical blocker 9 is multiplexed with the input of the L-band EDFA3 in the optical coupler 7.

(description of advantageous effects)

In the C + L band repeater 1D according to the present exemplary embodiment, only light of a wavelength of the L band close to the output light of the C band EDFA2 is multiplexed with the input of the L band EDFA3 through a path for inputting the output light of the C band EDFA2 to the L band EDFA 3.

Further, according to the present exemplary embodiment, the BPF 406 that performs wavelength branching of the output of the C-band EDFA2 into two paths is used.

Further, as an example of an insertion device that inserts some or all of the wavelengths of light output from the C-band EDFA2 into the L-band EDFA3, the C + L-band repeater 1F of fig. 5 includes an optical blocker 9, an optical coupler 506, and an optical coupler 507. The optical coupler 507 includes a function of branching and outputting L-band light output from the L-band EDFA3 in the direction of the light blocker 9, and a function of transmitting C-band light input from the light blocker 9 side to the output side of the L-band EDFA 3.

(description of advantageous effects)

In the C + L band repeater 1F according to the present exemplary embodiment, L band light is input to the C band EDFA2 in the opposite direction from the output side of the C band EDFA2, and thus the gain skew and the gain deviation of the C band main path can be corrected or controlled. (description of advantageous effects)

According to the present exemplary embodiment, similar to the first exemplary embodiment, the channel power on the L-band short-wave side of the L-band EDFA3 is reduced, and thus it is possible to reduce the signal quality degradation and the OSNR deviation due to the nonlinear optical effect of the L-band to be transmitted.

(description of advantageous effects)

In the C + L band repeater 1I according to the present exemplary embodiment, C band light is input to the C band EDFA711 in the opposite direction from the output side of the C band EDFA711, and thus the gain skew and the gain deviation of the main path of the C band EDFA711 can be corrected or controlled. The configuration may be as follows: as a means for realizing demultiplexing/multiplexing of the correction light, for example, an optical band-pass filter and an optical circulator are used instead of the optical couplers 506 and 507.

Further, by inserting an optical isolator or an optical band pass filter in the path from the optical coupler 506 to the optical coupler 507 via the optical blocker 9, it is possible to configure such that the EDFA output of only one of the C-band EDFA711 and the C-band EDFA712 is corrected.

[ tenth example embodiment ]

Next, an optical repeater, a control method of the optical repeater, and an optical transmission system according to a tenth exemplary embodiment of the present invention are described. Fig. 8B is a block diagram showing an optical transmission system including a C + L band repeater according to a tenth exemplary embodiment of the present invention. The present exemplary embodiment is realized by applying the present invention to an aspect similar to the optical repeater according to the ninth exemplary embodiment. According to the present embodiment, it is assumed that correction light is input from an EDFA of another transmission system within the same repeater.

(construction Explanation)

In the optical transmission system of fig. 8B, the C + L-band repeater 1J is inserted in the parallel transmission path fiber of the two lines. Specifically, in the optical transmission system of fig. 8B, the configuration is made as follows: a plurality of transmission systems pass through the same repeater, and the C + L-band repeater 1J is inserted into parallel transmission path fibers of two lines of the system 1 and the system 2. It is assumed that WDM signals of both the C-band and the L-band are multiplexed in signals input from the respective transmission path fibers to the C + L-band repeater 1J.

The C + L band repeater 1J in fig. 8B includes a C band EDFA721 as one example of a first optical fiber amplification unit, a C band EDFA722 as one example of a second optical fiber amplification unit, and a signal detection unit 10.

Further, as one example of an insertion device that inserts some or all of the wavelengths of light output from the C-band EDFA721 into the C-band EDFA722 or inserts some or all of the wavelengths of light output from the C-band EDFA722 into the C-band EDFA721, the C + L-band repeater 1J in fig. 8B includes an optical blocker 9, an optical coupler 506, and an optical coupler 507. According to the present exemplary embodiment, a path for inputting the output light of the C-band EDFA721 to the C-band EDFA722 or for inputting the output light of the C-band EDFA722 to the C-band EDFA721 exists between the optical coupler 506 and the optical coupler 507, and an optical blocker 9 is arranged in the path. In a normal state, the light blockers 9 are blocked and only when there is a control input from the signal detection unit 10, C-band signals are transmitted from the C-band EDFA721 through a path to the main path of the C-band EDFA722 or from the C-band EDFA722 through a path to the main path of the C-band EDFA 721.

The optical coupler 506 includes a function of performing branching output of the C-band light output from the C-band EDFA721 in the light blocker 9 direction, and a function of transmitting the C-band light input from the light blocker 9 side to the output side of the C-band EDFA 721.

The optical coupler 507 includes a function of performing branching output of C-band light output from the C-band EDFA722 in the light blocker 9 direction, and a function of transmitting C-band light input from the light blocker 9 side to the output side of the C-band EDFA 722.

(description of advantageous effects)

In the C + L band repeater 1J according to the present exemplary embodiment, C-band light is input to the C-band EDFA721 in the opposite direction from the output side of the C-band EDFA721, and thus the gain skew and the gain deviation of the main path of the C-band EDFA721 can be corrected or controlled. Further, in the C + L band repeater 1J according to the present exemplary embodiment, C band light is input to the C band EDFA722 in the opposite direction from the output side of the C band EDFA722, and thus the gain skew and the gain deviation of the main path of the C band EDFA722 can be corrected or controlled.

The configuration may be as follows: as a means for realizing demultiplexing/multiplexing of the correction light, for example, an optical band-pass filter and an optical circulator are used instead of the optical couplers 506 and 507.

Further, by inserting an optical isolator or an optical band-pass filter in the path from the optical coupler 506 to the optical coupler 507 via the optical blocker 9, it is possible to configure in such a manner that the EDFA output of only one of the C-band EDFA721 and the C-band EDFA722 is corrected.
