Technical Field

The invention relates to the field of electronic watches. And more particularly to a method for transmitting data from an electronic device to an electronic watch.

Background

Watches, known as "linked" watches, capable of communicating with an electronic device, such as a smartphone, have become non-negligible in the horology industry over the last few years. Such watches can be adjusted manually, in particular via activation of buttons, crown and/or touch control means, which is relatively limited for the user or for after-market services undertaking the adjustment task.

To avoid these drawbacks, it is now possible to automatically adjust an electronic watch by equipping it with a device supporting bluetooth low energy technology or another near field communication technology. However, the implementation of these devices is very complex and requires specific communication means, and in particular the antenna is to be incorporated into both the electronic device and the watch. They must also be certified, which incurs additional costs.

In patent application EP16157655, a new method of transmitting adjustment data from an electronic device, typically a smartphone, to an electronic watch is proposed, which method of transmitting adjustment data is simpler and less costly than the above-mentioned solutions. To allow data to be transmitted, the watch comprises a phototransistor for detecting an optical signal originating from a light source of the electronic device. These optical signals encode data by two-state modulation, the two states being the presence or absence of light. This type of bipolar optical modulation, however, has the disadvantage of only allowing relatively low transmission rates. Furthermore, the transmission can only be asynchronous and the operating system of the electronic device cannot ensure perfect stability of the transmission frequency. There is a risk that the transmission periods will not have the same duration, which may lead to errors in reception and decoding.

Disclosure of Invention

The object of the present invention is to remedy the drawbacks set forth in the previous section by providing an improved method of optical transmission.

To this end, the invention relates to a method for transmitting data from an electronic device to an electronic watch, comprising the steps of:

-emitting, with a light source of the electronic device, a sequence of light signals, each signal having light intensity levels belonging to a set of at least four light intensity levels, the sequence corresponding to a code of data to be transmitted;

-detecting successive light intensity levels with a phototransistor of the watch in order to reconstruct the sequence; and

-decoding the sequence in order to reconstruct the data.

Since data is encoded in the form of an optical signal having at least four states, it can be said that the signal encodes the data via an optical modulation having at least four levels, which is more simply referred to as multi-level optical modulation. Thus, the multiplier is at least four.

The advantage of this method is that it can be implemented mainly automatically without the user having to perform complex adjustments, for example via a crown, buttons or touch control means. Naturally, the method must be started, which can be done manually by pressing a button, or automatically, e.g. via a system that is in a standby state by default and that is switched on when a certain flashing sequence is received. Automatic data transfer between an electronic device and an electronic watch makes it easier to program the watch. It may also allow for errors or inaccuracies due to manual configuration to be avoided. The user can use the more user-friendly interface of the electronic device (typically the application of a smartphone) to select and configure the data to be sent to the watch. Various data can be sent by this means, including short messages if the watch has a display function. Therefore, any one of the following operations can be easily performed: time may be set, time may be changed, alarms may be set, date may be set, or other information may be sent such as lunar phase, tidal time and tidal factor, sunset and sunrise time, etc.

Furthermore, this method has the advantage of not requiring the incorporation of a communication antenna (expensive, bulky and sometimes incompatible with metallic external parts) into the frame or the electronic device, the system for optical communication between the watch and the electronic device consisting only of a point light source of the light-emitting diode type and an optical sensor of the phototransistor type.

Finally, the method according to the invention is particularly advantageous in that it allows synchronous transmission, as described below.

In particular, transmitting optical signals of at least four optical intensity levels allows for clock signals to be transmitted in addition to data. In each clock cycle, a portion of the data (e.g., one or more bits) is sent in the phase of the clock (high or low state). In particular, when the clock is in a high state, the data portion is encoded at certain light intensity levels, and when the clock is in a low state, the data portion is encoded at other light intensity levels. Thus, using the threshold level, the watch can reconstruct the data while taking into account the clock signal that is also transmitted.

Thus, in one embodiment, the set of at least four intensity levels is divided into a first part and a second part, one of the two optical signals in the sequence having an optical intensity level belonging to the first part and the other signal having an optical intensity level belonging to the second part.

The method according to the invention may comprise one or a technically possible combination of the following features.

In one non-limiting embodiment, the aggregate light intensity levels are regularly distributed over the brightness scale.

In one non-limiting embodiment, the method includes the additional step of generating feedback regarding the transmission.

In one non-limiting embodiment, the step of generating feedback regarding the transmission includes transmitting an optical signal using a light emitting diode of the watch.

In one non-limiting embodiment, the method comprises the additional step of analyzing an image of the dial of the watch, this image being taken by the camera of the electronic device after the positioning of the display part of the watch.

In one non-limiting embodiment, the electronic device is portable, and in particular a smartphone or an electronic tablet computer.

"portable electronic device" refers to an electronic device, also referred to as a user terminal, which can be carried and transported by a user and which remains functional during its transportation. This is the case, for example, with smart phones. Of course, devices that require a power source (e.g., desktop computers) are excluded from this definition. This definition also excludes combinations of devices, such as portable computers to which peripheral devices are connected via wireless or wired links.

This approach has the advantage of requiring little hardware: all that is needed to implement it is a portable device of the smartphone type with the appropriate mobile application. This approach does not require special hardware, such as sensors to be plugged into the computer or bulky hardware to be used. Anyone (e.g. watchmaker) who owns a smartphone with the correct application can implement the method.

In one non-limiting embodiment, the light source is a region of a display screen of the electronic device.

In one non-limiting embodiment, the light source is a light emitting diode that also functions as a flash for the electronic device.

Detailed Description

Fig. 1 and 2 show an electronic watch MT and an electronic device AE suitable for implementing the method for transmitting data according to the invention, which method is shown in fig. 5. More specifically, the watch MT is equipped with a phototransistor PR connected to a microcontroller (not shown) of the watch MT. The transmission method comprises transmitting (step Pcd _ Em1) a sequence of optical signals with a light source SL of an electronic equipment AE at least four different light intensity levels, receiving (step Pcd _ Det1, Det1_ Rsc) the sequence of optical signals with a phototransistor PR of a watch MT, and converting (step Pcd _ Dec) the received sequence into a usable signal.

In the first configuration shown in fig. 1, the phototransistor PR is located below the dial CD of the frame watch MT, facing a hole for the passage of light. In another configuration, the phototransistor PR is located on a side of the back of the watch MT that is at least partially transparent to pass light or have a removable shadow. Naturally, many other configurations can be envisaged.

Data is sent from the electronic device AE via a light source SL (e.g. a flash or a screen EC of said device AE). In the configuration shown in fig. 1, the electronic device AE is a smartphone and the light signal is emitted via a flash of the smartphone, forming a light source. Since the flash is located on the back of the device, during data transmission, the screen EC of the device AE can be used to manage the transmission application using the screen EC of the smartphone, while also visually monitoring the modifications made to the display of the watch MT.

In the configuration shown in fig. 2, the electronic device AE is a smartphone, and the light signal is emitted via the screen EC of the smartphone. More precisely, the screen EC comprises a discoid area, the brightness level of which is uniform, said area forming the light source SL. The watch MT faces the light emitting disc directly to or opposite the screen EC of the smartphone. In this case, the application program must be configured before transmission is performed, and if the dial CD of the watch MT is not visible, the step of checking the transmission of data must be performed after the operation. This configuration has the advantage of being less susceptible to interference from external light sources than the configuration of fig. 1.

In a variant implementation of the aforementioned configuration, the screen EC may be divided into two areas, so as to limit the range of the light source to one of the areas of the screen EC. The remaining area of the screen EC is reserved for the user interface of the application controlling the data transmission. Therefore, transmission of data and checking performed thereon become easier.

It will be noted that the electronic equipment AE shown is of the portable type, but it may alternatively be a peripheral device connected to a desktop computer, for example by a USB link, the peripheral device comprising a light source (a light emitting diode or a part of a peripheral screen) such as described in the preceding paragraph. This variant has the advantage of making it possible to increase the symbol rate, which may be limited by the performance of a portable electronic device of the smartphone type.

Various types of optical modulation may be used to transmit data. As mentioned above, NRZ type bipolar modulation is easy to implement, but has limited performance. It is therefore advantageous to make use of the possibilities offered by the screen or flash of a smartphone (or more generally of a portable electronic device) to implement a multi-level optical modulation. In particular, the most recent flashes and screens are generally capable of emitting at least four different light intensity levels (one of which may correspond, for example, to a "no light" state).

The synchronous multi-level modulation according to the invention allows to transmit a part of the data (e.g. one bit) in each clock cycle, but also the phase of the clock (low state or high state), all of which rely on only one single optical signal sequence. Fig. 3 shows an example of a four-level synchronous modulation, which allows one bit and the phase to be transmitted in each clock phase. In this example, phases n and n +2 correspond to the low state of the clock, and phases n +1 and n +3 correspond to the high state of the clock. In the low state of the clock, the bits to be transmitted are encoded at the lowest 2 light intensity levels. In the high state of the clock, the bits to be transmitted are encoded at the highest 2 light intensity levels.

According to one embodiment of the method of the invention, the transmission method comprises a step of calibrating the light intensity level emitted by the light source of the watch MT. The levels are calibrated such that they are regularly distributed with respect to the brightness scale, i.e. such that the brightness difference between one level and the next remains constant. This step allows optimizing the discrimination of the various brightness levels in order to avoid reading errors of the receiver part. An example is shown in fig. 4. The figure shows the luminance level based on the data to be encoded before calibration (the curve is called "raw") and after calibration (the curve is called "corrected").

In one embodiment, the method comprises a step of generating feedback on the transmission (step Pcd _ Crd) generated by the watch MT for the purpose of the user or the electronic equipment AE. For example, at the end of the sending operation, the display means AF of the watch (for example, the hour, minute and second hands of the watch) may be placed (step Crd _ Pos), such as to indicate the success or failure of the sending. This specific position of the display part AF can be recorded by the user and thus informed of the result of the transmission. Alternatively, the electronic equipment AE may analyze (step Crd _ Aly) the position of the display means AF of the watch MT by means of its camera CM and image analysis means and thereby deduce whether the transmission was performed correctly. It is also possible to add to the watch MT a light-emitting diode capable of emitting (step Crd _ Em3) at the end of transmission a short sequence intended to be received by the phototransistor of the electronic device AE. Depending on the sequence, the electronic equipment AE may determine whether the transmission has been performed correctly.

In summary, the synchronous multilevel optical transmission between the electronic device and the watch allows to reduce the risk of transmission errors. Naturally, a person skilled in the art will be able to produce numerous variants of the proposed embodiments without departing from the scope of the claims.
