Background

The number of people who die or suffer from serious illness due to air pollution exceeds any other environmental factor. Air pollution is associated with premature death of about 7 million people. Outdoor air pollution is associated with ischemic heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer and acute lower respiratory infections in children. Indoor air pollution is associated with childhood stroke, coronary artery disease, ischemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, acute lower respiratory infection, and lung cancer.

Contaminants of interest include standard air pollutants. The standard air pollutants are six common air pollutants including ozone, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter, and lead.

Many environmental pollutants are oxidants or catalyze the production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), either directly or indirectly. ROS are believed to activate cell proliferation and/or cell survival signaling mechanisms, including mechanisms that can alter apoptosis and other regulatory pathways that may be involved in the pathogenesis of many skin conditions, including photosensitive diseases and some types of skin malignancies.

The skin has a series of defense mechanisms that interact with poisons to eliminate their harmful effects. These protection mechanisms include non-enzymatic and enzymatic molecules that act as potent antioxidant or oxidant degradation systems. Unfortunately, these homeostatic defenses, while highly effective, are limited in function and may be overwhelmed, resulting in an increase in ROS in the skin, which in turn may contribute to the development of dermatological diseases.

Despite the many advances made in the art of formulating lotions, many challenges still remain.

Disclosure of Invention

Some embodiments of the present invention relate to a topical composition comprising a combination of ingredients that will block the effects of gaseous contaminants on a patient's skin. In particular, the present invention relates to a topical composition for reducing exposure of gaseous contaminants to skin prepared by sequentially mixing (a) a solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer and (b) a vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in a solvent into a skin lotion.

One of the advantages of the present invention is that topical compositions prepared by sequentially mixing (a) a solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer and (b) a vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in a solvent into a skin lotion exhibit a synergistic effect of reducing exposure to ozone transmission through the topical composition.

Vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymers are linear random copolymers resulting from the free radical polymerization of vinylpyrrolidone monomers and vinyl acetate monomers in a specific ratio.

The solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer can be in the form of a powder, microspheres, flakes or pellets. In one embodiment, the solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer is a powder.

The vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in the solvent can be dissolved in a weight ratio ranging from about 40% by weight to about 60% by weight. In one embodiment, the vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer is dissolved in the solvent at about 50% by weight.

The molecular weight of the vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer is in the range of about 10,000g/mol to about 100,000 g/mol.

The topical composition is prepared by sequentially mixing (a) a solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer and (b) a vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in a solvent into a skin lotion. In one embodiment, the copolymer of (a) to (b) is present in a weight ratio of about 8:1 to about 0.4: 1. In one embodiment, the copolymer of (a) to (b) is present in a weight ratio of about 8:1 to about 0.5: 1. In one embodiment, the copolymer of (a) to (b) is present in a weight ratio of about 8:1 to about 0.67: 1.

The vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer is dissolved in a polar solvent. These solvents include solvents that are small molecule organic compounds containing atoms with lone electron pairs, such as oxygen or nitrogen. The solvent should not have a high degree of hydrocarbon-like character. Acceptable solvents include alcohols, esters, ketones, and water.

The remainder of the topical composition is any topical composition compatible with both the vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer.

The topical composition is prepared by sequentially mixing (a) a solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer and (b) a vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in a solvent into a skin lotion. The step of preparing the topical composition comprises: a base skin lotion was prepared to which a solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer was added, and then to which a vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in a solvent was added. Alternatively, the step of preparing the topical composition comprises: a base skin lotion was prepared to which a vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in a solvent was added, and then a solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer was added thereto. The term "sequentially" means that the components (a) and (b) are not added simultaneously, but are added one after the other in any suitable order.

It has been observed that the solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer exhibits about 11% ozone blocking when added at 1.0% by weight in the lotion. It has also been observed that the addition of 1.0 wt.% of vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in pure ethanol in the lotion showed about 10% ozone blocking. However, the addition of both solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer and dissolved vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer each at a level of 1 wt% in the lotion exhibited an ozone block of about 32%. The ozone blocking capacity of lotions comprising solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer and dissolved vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer is an unusual and unexpectedly large improvement. This large improvement is repeatable and statistically significant.

The present invention also relates to a method for reducing exposure of gaseous contaminants to the skin of a patient comprising applying to an area of the skin a topical composition prepared by sequentially mixing into a skin lotion (a) a solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer and (b) a vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in a solvent.

The method comprises the steps of placing the topical composition onto a small portion of the skin of a patient and spreading the topical composition onto a larger area of the skin of the patient to form a layer of the topical composition; or the steps of placing the topical composition on the hands of a patient and spreading the topical composition over a larger area of the patient's skin to form a layer of the topical composition; or the steps of placing the topical composition onto a device and spreading the topical composition onto a larger area of the patient's skin to form a layer of the topical composition.

Alternatively, the vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer has the formula- [ CH ]2–CHY]m–[CH2=CH(–O–CO–CH3)]n-wherein Y is pyrrolidone bonded to the polymer chain via the nitrogen of the pyrrolidone.

Pyrrolidones consist of five-membered rings containing an amide group. Vinylpyrrolidone consists of a five-membered ring containing an amide group, the nitrogen of which is also bonded to the vinyl group.

Acetate group formed by the group-O-CO-CH3And (4) forming.

The vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer can be obtained from any suitable commercial source, including Ashland, BASF, GAF Materials Corp, Shanghai Yuking Water solvent Materials Tech Co., Dalian Biochemistry Co., and Hefei Joye Import & Export Co.

The present invention relates to a topical composition prepared by sequentially mixing (a) a solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer and (b) a vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in a solvent into a skin lotion.

In one embodiment, the solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer is the same as the vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in the solvent. In another embodiment, the solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer is similar to the vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in the solvent. In another embodiment, the solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer is different from the vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in the solvent.

The expression "solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer" is intended to indicate that the particular vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer is added as a solid to a skin lotion, rather than to indicate that the vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer must be solid in a lotion. Similarly, the expression "vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in a solvent" is intended to indicate that the particular vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer is dissolved in a solvent for addition to a skin lotion, rather than to indicate that the vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer must be in a solvent in a lotion. Modification in the expression "solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer" the term "solid" and the modification in the expression "vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in a solvent" the expression "dissolved in a solvent" are in each case an indication of the origin of the copolymer and not necessarily its state in the lotion.

In one embodiment, the solvent is ethanol.

The present invention relates to a topical composition for reducing exposure of gaseous contaminants to the skin prepared by sequentially mixing into a skin lotion (a) a solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer and (b) a vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in a solvent. The remainder of the topical composition is any topical composition compatible with both the vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer.

The topical composition may be a skin lotion. Skin lotions are stable or semi-stable mixtures of oil, water and ingredients miscible therein. The most used level of ingredient is usually water. Oils may be used to provide a moisturizing effect to the skin of a patient. Moisturization can occur in a variety of ways, including changing the feel of the skin, attracting water to the skin, and blocking the escape of water from the skin. When placed on the skin, the lotion interacts with the skin surface to provide a soothing sensation. Over time, the occlusive agent in the lotion formulation prevents water from leaving the skin, which helps to accumulate moisture in the skin. This additional moisture ultimately alleviates the problems associated with dry skin.

The mixture of water, oil, and other ingredients that form the skin lotion formulation is formulated to provide a homogeneous mixture, such as an emulsion. Additional ingredients include ingredients that can be described by their function in an emulsion, such as diluents, thickeners, humectants, preservatives, neutralizing agents, emulsifiers, co-emulsifiers, emollients, occlusive agents, fragrances, and colorants. Some ingredients may have more than one function in a skin lotion.

A common moisturizing ingredient is an occlusive agent, which creates a barrier that blocks water from escaping the skin. Examples of occlusive agents include petrolatum, fatty alcohols (such as cetyl and stearyl alcohols), hydrocarbon oils (such as mineral oil), silicones (such as dimethicone and cyclomethicone), squalene, wax esters (such as beeswax and lanolin; vegetable waxes (such as candelilla, carnauba and palm kernel), vegetable based oils (such as olive, rice bran, macadamia, castor, soybean, shea butter), cholesterol and lecithin.

The lotion may contain a humectant, which is an ingredient that attracts water. Humectants attract and retain moisture from the surrounding air via absorption, drawing water vapor into or below the upper surface of the patient's skin. Humectants typically have hydroxyl groups that allow them to participate in hydrogen bonding to attract water. This process draws moisture from the outer layers of the skin or from the atmosphere at high humidity. The water is then trapped by the epidermis. Examples of humectants include triethylene glycol, tripropylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerin, polyethylene glycol, PPG, glycerin, sorbitol, hexylene glycol, butylene glycol, urea, silicone, collagen, aloe vera, honey, and hyaluronic acid.

The lotion formulation may further comprise an emollient. Emollients are ingredients that will improve the feel of the lotion on the skin. Emollients reduce the stickiness and oiliness caused by other moisturizing ingredients. Examples of common emollients include coconut oil, cetyl esters, selected silicone oils, shea butter, cocoa butter, mineral oil, lanolin, petrolatum, paraffin wax, beeswax, squalene, coconut oil, jojoba oil, sesame oil, almond oil, cetyl alcohol, olive oil, oleic acid and triisocaprylic glyceride.

The lotion can also include an emulsifier. Emulsifiers are ingredients that will improve the stability of a mixture of oil material and water. Examples of common emulsifiers include glyceryl stearate and stearic acid. Other examples of emulsifiers include acacia seyal octenyl succinate, C12-18Acid triglyceride, acrylate crosslinkingPolymer-4, Adinandra milletii seed oil PEG-8 ester, Adinandra milletii seed oil The topical composition of the present invention is prepared by sequentially mixing (a) a solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer and (b) a vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in a solvent into a skin lotion.

The step of preparing the topical composition of the present invention comprises: a base skin lotion was prepared to which a solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer was added, and then to which a vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in a solvent was added.

Alternatively, the step of preparing the topical composition of the present invention comprises: a base skin lotion was prepared to which a vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in a solvent was added, and then a solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer was added thereto.

The term "sequentially" means that the components (a) and (b) are not added simultaneously, but are added one after the other in any suitable order. In one embodiment, ingredient (a) is added first, followed by ingredient (b). In one embodiment, ingredient (b) is added first, followed by ingredient (a).

The present invention also relates to a topical composition for reducing exposure of gaseous contaminants to the skin prepared by sequentially mixing into a skin lotion (a) a solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer and (b) a vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in a solvent, wherein the composition is a fully formulated topical lotion for reducing exposure of gaseous contaminants to the skin of a patient.

The term "fully formulated" refers to a lotion that is ready for use by a patient.

In one embodiment, the topical composition of the present invention is used like any common cream, gel or body lotion. The topical composition may be spread on the skin of the patient like any other typical cream, gel, or body wash. Which may be spread by the hand of the patient or any suitable device. The topical composition was spread into a layer of about 20 microns. In another embodiment, the topical composition is spread as a layer of 30 microns or more. In another embodiment, the topical composition is spread as a layer of 15 microns or less. In one embodiment, the topical composition is spread as a layer of 10 to 50 microns.

It has been observed that a solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer (PVP/VA S-630, supplied by Ashland, hereinafter "S-630") having a vinylpyrrolidone to vinyl acetate ratio of 60:40 and an average molecular weight of 51,000 exhibits an ozone block of about 11% at 1.0 wt% addition in the lotion. It has been observed that a vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer (PVP/VA E-735, supplied by Ashland, hereinafter "E-735") dissolved in pure ethanol at a 50 wt% ratio, with a vinylpyrrolidone to vinyl acetate ratio of 70:30 and an average molecular weight of 56,700, exhibited about 10% ozone blocking at a 1.0 wt% addition in the lotion. However, it has been observed that the addition of both solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer S-630 and dissolved vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer E-735 at a level of 1% by weight each in the lotion formulation exhibited an ozone block of about 32%.

In one embodiment, the compositions of the present invention reduce ozone transmission by at least 20% compared to compositions without the solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer and the vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in a solvent. In one embodiment, the compositions of the present invention reduce ozone transmission by at least 20% compared to compositions without the solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer. In one embodiment, the compositions of the present invention reduce ozone transmission by at least 20% compared to compositions without vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in a solvent.

The synergistic effect observed in ozone blockade was reproducible and statistically significant. Unfortunately, the theoretical basis for the observed behavior is difficult to find. While lotions containing both S-630 and E-735 exhibited slightly bimodal molecular weight distributions and exhibited slightly different PV: VA ratios, it is more likely to explain the state in which the copolymer was added to the lotion.

In one embodiment of the process, the copolymer of (a) to (b) is present in a weight ratio of about 8:1 to about 0.4: 1. In one embodiment of the method, the copolymer of (a) and (b) is present in a weight ratio of about 6:1 to about 0.67: 1. In one embodiment of the process, the copolymer of (a) and (b) is present in a weight ratio of about 3:1 to about 1: 1. In one embodiment of the process, the molecular weight of the solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer is in the range of from about 10,000g/mol to about 100,000 g/mol. In one embodiment of the process, the molecular weight of the solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer is in the range of from about 30,000g/mol to about 70,000 g/mol. In one embodiment of the method, the molecular weight of the vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in the solvent is in the range of from about 10,000g/mol to about 100,000 g/mol. In one embodiment of the method, the molecular weight of the vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in the solvent is in the range of from about 30,000g/mol to about 70,000 g/mol. In one embodiment of the process, the solvent is selected from the group consisting of alcohols, esters and ketones. In one embodiment of the process, the solvent is selected from the group consisting of ethanol, n-propanol, iso-propanol, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, methyl propionate, ethyl propionate, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, and 3-pentanone. In one embodiment of the method, the solvent is ethanol. In one embodiment of the method, the composition further comprises water, a humectant, a preservative, an exfoliating agent, a lubricant, an emollient, and an emulsifier. In one embodiment of the method, the composition is a fully formulated topical lotion for reducing exposure of gaseous contaminants to the skin of a patient. In one embodiment of the method, the 20 micron layer of the composition of the present invention reduces ozone transmission by at least 20% compared to a composition without the solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer and the vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in a solvent. In one embodiment of the method, the 20 micron layer of the composition of the present invention reduces ozone transmission by at least 20% compared to a composition without the solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer. In one embodiment of the method, the 20 micron layer of the composition of the present invention reduces ozone transmission by at least 20% compared to a composition without the vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in the solvent.

The method comprises the following steps: the topical composition is placed on a small portion of the patient's skin, and the topical composition is spread over a larger area of the patient's skin to form a layer of the topical composition. Alternatively, the method comprises the steps of: the topical composition is placed on the hand of the patient and the topical composition is spread over a larger area of the patient's skin to form a layer of the topical composition. Alternatively, the method comprises the steps of: the topical composition is placed on the device, and the topical composition is spread over a larger area of the patient's skin to form a layer of the topical composition.

The topical composition can be spread on the skin of the patient using the patient's hands or any suitable device.

The invention also relates to a method of assessing the reduction of the transmission of harmful contaminants to the skin of a patient.

In particular, a method for evaluating the reduction of harmful contaminant transmission to a patient's skin resulting from the use of a research ingredient in a representative topical composition ("lotion") is modeled as the transmission of ozone through the lotion containing the research ingredient to the skin of an animal model.

An ozone decay model is used to determine the ozone blocking performance of the lotion. The purpose of this method is to extract the kinetic rate constant of ozonolysis in the presence of a reactive substrate. The reactive substrate used in the method is animal skin in proximity to human skin. In one embodiment, the method uses 5cm by 5cm pig skin test strips.

The decomposition of ozone in the ozone chamber was modeled by the molar balance:

wherein r isinFor perfusion rate, routTo the outflow rate, rgenTo a rate of production, rconspnIs the ozone depletion rate.

Since the method only focuses on the decay curve of ozone, the ozone generator is turned off once the concentration of ozone in the chamber reaches 800 ppb. Therefore, the first 3 terms in the equation can be ignored. Equation (1) then becomes:

the ozone depletion is determined by the decomposition rate rdecompAnd reaction rate rrxnAnd (4) explanation. Decomposition rate rdecompFor background decomposition of ozone, this is the characteristic decomposition of the chamber by the catalyst of the carilite particles in the absence of reactive substrates. Reaction rate rrxnOzone is consumed by reaction with a reactive substrate. Equation (2) can be further broken down in terms of concentration.

Wherein [ O ]3]Is the concentration of ozone, [ s ]]Is the concentration of reactive species in the pigskin, kdThe ozone background decomposition rate constant, k, characteristic of the chamberrxnα, β, and γ are their respective reaction orders for the rate constant of ozone depletion by reaction with the reactive substrate.

To determine the reaction order α, the background decomposition of ozone in the chamber in the absence of reactive substrate was measured and the regression of equation (5) was performed.

In some embodiments, ln (d [ O ]) in the absence of a reactive substrate3]Dt) vs. ln [ O ]3]The regression of (a) is linear, indicating the first order reaction rate, so α is 1.

To determine the reaction order γ, O in the presence of a reactive substrate is measured3Concentration profile. A regression analysis similar to that described above was performed as shown in equation (6).

In some embodiments, ln (-d [ O ]) is in the presence of a reactive substrate3]Dt) vs. ln [ O ]3]Generates a straight line indicating O3The total number of decomposition stages in terms of concentration is equal to 1. In such embodiments, it can be concluded that γ ═ 1 and the rate of ozone decomposition does not depend on the concentration of reactive species in the substrate. This may be explained by the effective concentration of reactive species on the pig skin [ s]Much greater than the concentration of ozone. In such embodiments, the ozone concentration is rate controlled, not the concentration of the reactive species [ s ]]. Equation (3) can be simplified as:

the peer-to-peer two-sided integration yields:

in some embodiments, the model is simplified to equation (11). The above model can be used to evaluate the efficacy of blocking the transmission of harmful contaminants. In one embodiment, the procedure for evaluating the blocking effect of various ingredients in a lotion can be performed in a series of steps, including: (a) preparing a lotion; (b) loading a lotion formulation onto a test strip model of human skin; (c) exposing the loaded coupon to an ozone-rich atmosphere; (d) ozone transmission through the lotion was calculated.

Examples

The above model was used to evaluate ozone blocking efficacy in a basic topical composition. The base topical composition is a commercially available body lotion.

Example 1

Three experimental batches of lotion were prepared. In a first batch, 1.0 wt% of a solid vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer was mixed into a base topical composition, wherein the vinylpyrrolidone: vinyl acetate ratio was 60:40 and the average molecular weight was 51,000(PVP/VA S-630, supplied by Ashland, hereinafter "S-630"). In a second batch, 1.0 wt% of a vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in pure ethanol at a 50 wt% ratio, wherein the vinylpyrrolidone to vinyl acetate ratio is 70:30, and the average molecular weight is 56,700(PVP/VA E-735, supplied by Ashland, hereinafter "E-735"), was mixed into the base topical composition. In a third batch, 1.0 wt% S-630 and 1.0 wt% E-735 were mixed sequentially into the base topical composition.

For each test, a 5 x 5cm pig skin test piece (Animals Technology, Inc. (boltzmann, maryland, usa)) was loaded with about 50mg of the formulated lotion in the middle and spread over the entire surface of the test piece using the index finger. This procedure coated the entire surface of the test piece with a layer of lotion of about 20 μm.

The loaded coupons were then incubated at 37 ℃ for 30 minutes to allow water to evaporate from the lotion. Such incubation mimics the typical condition of a lotion as used by a patient.

The loaded test strip was placed into an ozone chamber (Oxidation Technologies, LLC. (infix, indiana) and the atmospheric ozone level in the chamber was increased to over 800 ppb. An ozone level of 800ppb is a typical high tropospheric ozone level observed in heavily polluted cities in the hot summer months.

Once the ozone concentration exceeds 800ppb, the introduction or generation of ozone in the chamber is stopped and the ozone level is allowed to decay. Once the ozone concentration had dropped to 800ppb, a stopwatch was started. The concentration is then recorded every 30 seconds for 10 minutes or more.

The above procedure was repeated three or four times for each of the three lotions. The% ozone blocked by the use of the lotion was then calculated using the above model. The results are presented in the table below.

TABLE 1

The data described in table 1 (above) demonstrate that the use of E-735 and S-630 alone in the base lotion had a small but still statistically significant effect on ozone blocking. The data in table 1 (above) also shows that the combined use of E-735 and S-630 in the base lotion has a surprisingly significant effect on the ozone blocking effect of the lotion.

Example 2

Three additional experimental batches of lotion were prepared. In the fourth batch, 0.75 wt% S-630 and 0.75 wt% E-735 were mixed sequentially into the base topical composition. In a fifth batch, 1.5 wt% S-630 and 0.5 wt% E-735 were mixed sequentially into the base topical composition. In a sixth batch, 0.5 wt% S-630 and 1.5 wt% E-735 were mixed sequentially into the base topical composition.

These batches were then applied to swine coupons, incubated and treated in an ozone chamber in a similar manner as described above.

The% ozone blocked by the use of the lotion was then calculated using the above model. The results for the third to sixth batches are presented in the table below.

TABLE 2

The data described in table 2 demonstrates the surprising effect on ozone blocking by varying the ratio of solid PVP/VA copolymer to dissolved PVP/VA copolymer.

Example 3

Additional experiments were conducted for various combinations of polymers as described in examples 1 and 2 above. These experiments involved PVP/VA copolymer alone and the following polymer combinations:

combination 1: 1% PVP/VA copolymer (Plasdone)TMS-630) + 1% of VP/eicosene copolymer (Unimer U-15)

Combination 2: 1% PVP/VA copolymer (Plasdone)TMS-630) + 1% of a VP/hexadecene copolymer and octyldodecanol mixture (Unimer U-1946)

Combination 3: 1% PVP/VA copolymer (Plasdone)TMS-630) + 1% of acrylic polymer (Noverite)TMK-752)

Combination 4: 1% PVP/VA copolymer (Plasdone)TMS-630) + 1% myristamidopropyl PG-dimethylammonium chloride phosphate (Arlasilk)TMPTM)

Combination 5: 1% PVP/VA copolymer (Plasdone)TMS-630) + 1% of an acrylate copolymerAQF

The results of these experiments are described in table 3 (below).

TABLE 3

The data described in table 3 (above) highlights the surprising results provided by the inventive polymer combination of the present invention.
