Background

The electrolysis of an aqueous solution of sodium chloride (sometimes referred to as an aqueous salt solution) produces hypochlorous acid (HOCl). More specifically, an electrolytic cell, typically having a membrane permeable to sodium and chloride ions, separates the anode and cathode. At the anode, hypochlorous acid, hydrochloric acid (HCl) and hypochlorite ions (ClO) are generated-) And oxygen (O)2) And chlorine (Cl)2) A gas. The chlorine content is in equilibrium and the main chemical is a function of pH, with hypochlorous acid dominating at pH values between 2 and 7. At the cathode, an alkaline solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrogen gas (H) are generated2) A gas. The acidic solution produced at the anode is sometimes referred to as "anolyte" or "acidic electrolyzed water". The alkaline solution produced at the cathode is sometimes referred to as "catholyte" or "alkaline electrolyzed water". The combination of both is sometimes referred to as "neutral electrolytic water".

Hypochlorous acid has been used as a germicide, disinfectant, and antimicrobial agent in a variety of applications. Exemplary applications of hypochlorous acid include disinfecting food processing surfaces and sterilizing medical equipment in hospitals. Hypochlorous acid kills microorganisms very rapidly by reacting irreversibly with membrane enzymes and structural proteins. A "catholyte" containing sodium hydroxide has been used as a cleaning agent.

However, the reactivity of hypochlorous acid poses a problem because hypochlorous acid does not act as a persistent or prophylactic antimicrobial agent. Similarly, the "anolyte" has a limited shelf life, in which the concentration of hypochlorous acid rapidly decreases over time.

Disclosure of Invention

The present disclosure solves this problem by combining a silane quaternary ammonium component with hypochlorous acid. The silane quaternary ammonium component imparts a persistent antimicrobial component to solutions containing hypochlorous acid. When the solution containing the silane quaternary ammonium component is applied to a surface, the silane quaternary ammonium component is caused to bind to the surface. The silane quaternary ammonium component does not deactivate through reaction in the same way as hypochlorous acid. Thus, the silane quaternary ammonium component provides a long lasting antimicrobial efficacy even if the hypochlorous acid has reacted and thus expired, or even if the concentration of hypochlorous acid in the solution has decreased. In a sense, the silane quaternary ammonium component provides ready antimicrobial functionality in the event that hypochlorous acid has reacted or the concentration in the solution has been reduced.

These and other features, advantages, and objects of the present disclosure will be further understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art by reference to the following specification and claims.

Detailed Description

For the purposes of this description, it is to be understood that the specific devices and processes described in the following specification are simply exemplary embodiments of the inventive concepts defined in the appended claims. Thus, physical features associated with the embodiments disclosed herein are not to be considered as limiting, unless the claims expressly state otherwise.

A disinfecting and antimicrobial solution is described herein. The disinfecting and antimicrobial solution includes hypochlorous acid, silane quaternary ammonium ions or salts thereof, and water.

In the examples, hypochlorous acid is the product of the electrolysis of aqueous sodium chloride solution. In embodiments, the hypochlorous acid is present in the solution at a concentration of 0.1 to 1000ppm, such as a concentration of 0.1 to 200ppm, or a concentration of 200 to 1000 ppm.

In embodiments, the silane quaternary ammonium ion or salt thereof is one or more of the following: 3- (trimethoxysilyl) propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium ion, 3- (trimethoxysilyl) propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride, 3- (trihydroxysilyl) propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium ion, and 3- (trihydroxysilyl) propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride. In embodiments, the silane quaternary ammonium ion or salt thereof is 0.1 to 10 weight percent of the solution, such as 0.75 to 5 weight percent of the solution, such as 1.9 to 2.1 weight percent of the solution.

In an embodiment, the disinfecting and antimicrobial solution further comprises isopropyl alcohol.

In particular embodiments, the disinfecting and antimicrobial solution comprises 0.1 to 1000ppm hypochlorous acid, 0.1 to 10 weight percent silane quaternary ammonium ion or salt thereof, and water. The solution may further comprise isopropanol.

In an embodiment, hypochlorous acid is a component of the anolyte for the electrolysis of aqueous sodium chloride solution. In such embodiments, the anolyte solution containing hypochlorous acid is combined with a solution containing silane quaternary ammonium ions or salts thereof. In one variation, the catholyte product of the electrolysis of aqueous sodium chloride solution is also added to the disinfecting and antimicrobial solution, thereby providing sodium hydroxide to the aqueous solution.

The addition of silane quaternary ammonium ions or salts thereof provides a durable antimicrobial activity that is retained after hypochlorous acid has been deactivated by reaction or other reasons. The silane groups of the silane quaternary ammonium ion bond to the surface to which it is applied. When a microbial cell is exposed to silane quaternary ammonium ions, several mechanisms are thought to lead to death of the microbial cell — (1) the quaternary ammonium group causes an ionic imbalance in the cell; or (2) long alkyl chains penetrate into and rupture the cells. Unlike hypochlorous acid, silane quaternary ammonium ions destroy microbial cells without consuming silane quaternary ammonium ions. Silane quaternary ammonium ions are free to destroy more microbial cells. Thus, even after the hypochlorous acid has reacted, the silane quaternary ammonium ion remains bound to the surface to which it is applied to continue to provide antimicrobial properties.

In another aspect of the disclosure, the antimicrobial solution comprises sodium hydroxide, silane quaternary ammonium ion or salt thereof, and water. The silane quaternary ammonium ion or salt thereof is one or more of the following: 3- (trimethoxysilyl) propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium ion, 3- (trimethoxysilyl) propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride, 3- (trihydroxysilyl) propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium ion, and 3- (trihydroxysilyl) propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride. The silane quaternary ammonium ion or salt thereof is 0.1 to 10% by weight of the solution.

In an embodiment, sodium hydroxide is a component of a catholyte product of aqueous sodium chloride electrolysis, and the catholyte product is combined with a silane quaternary ammonium ion or salt thereof. In an embodiment, the antimicrobial solution further comprises an anolyte product of electrolysis of the aqueous sodium chloride solution, and the anolyte product comprises hypochlorous acid.

It is to be understood that variations and modifications can be made on the aforementioned structure without departing from the concepts of the present disclosure, and further it is to be understood that such concepts are intended to be covered by the following claims unless these claims by their language expressly state otherwise.
