1. An apparatus for performing a lateral flow assay (2; 2'), the apparatus comprising:

-a receptacle (4) having a bottom wall portion (14) closing a first end of the receptacle (4) to define an interior material receiving space (16), and having a receptacle opening (18) at a second end opposite the first end;

-a compartment (8) for holding a lateral flow assay test strip (56), a lower portion (38) of the compartment (8) being located closer to the first end of the receiver (4) than the second end;

-a liquid passage (10) in fluid communication with the inner material receiving space (16) and the lower portion (38); and

-a cover (6; 6') adapted to cover the receiver opening (18) and comprising a body portion (20) having an outer periphery (22); wherein

-a sample receiving portion (24) is located in the body portion (20) and arranged in liquid communication with the inner material receiving space (16); and wherein

-the liquid passage (10) is delimited by a first opening (40) into the lower portion (38) of the compartment (8) and a second opening (26; 26') in the lid (6; 6').

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the second opening (26') is positioned in liquid communication with the sample receiving portion (24) to receive liquid therefrom.

3. A device (2; 2') according to claim 1, wherein the compartment (8) comprises an oblong channel (58) having long sides (60, 44) extending between the first and second ends in a direction along the receptacle (4) and being separated from the interior material receiving space (16).

4. A device (2; 2') according to claim 3, wherein the liquid passage (10) comprises an oval channel (64) running parallel to and abutting a long side (44) of the compartment (8).

5. A device (2') according to claim 4, wherein a removable cover (66) is provided covering the compartment (8) and the liquid passage (10).

6. The device (2') according to claim 5, wherein the cover (66) is configured with a reservoir (68) in liquid communication between the first opening (40) of the passageway (10) and the lower portion (38) of the compartment (8).

7. The device (2; 2') according to claim 1, wherein the compartment is configured with a window (42; 70, 72) through which an interior portion of the compartment (8) is visible.

The device (2; 2') according to claim 1, wherein a sample well (28; 28'; 28 ") having a well opening (30; 30 '; 30") in liquid communication with the sample receiving portion (24) is located in the body portion (20) of the cap (6; 6'; 6 "), the well opening (30; 30 '; 30") being located closer to the outer periphery (22) than the sample receiving portion (24) in the body portion (20) and accessible from outside the cap (6; 6'; 6 ").

9. Device (2 '; 2 ") according to claim 8, wherein a liquid guide (32) is provided in the lid (6; 6 '; 6") between the sample receiving portion (24) and the aperture opening (30; 30 '; 30 ").

The device (2') according to claim 8, wherein a container (50) having a container opening (52) accessible from outside the lid (6 ") is located in the body portion (20) of the lid (6"), the container opening (52) being located closer to the outer periphery (22) than the sample receiving portion (24) in the body portion (20).

The device (2') according to any one of the preceding claims, comprising a lateral flow test strip (56) having a liquid receiving zone (78) and retained in the compartment (8), wherein the liquid receiving zone (78) is proximate to and in liquid communication with the lower portion (38) of the compartment (8).

12. The device (2') of claim 11, wherein the compartment (8) is configured with a window (70, 72) through which the test strip (56) is visible from outside the compartment (8), and wherein the lateral flow test strip (56) has its test zone (74) coincident with the window (70, 72).

13. An apparatus (80) for performing a lateral flow assay, the apparatus comprising:

-a device (2; 2') according to any one of the preceding claims 1 to 12;

-a rotator adapted to rotate the device (2; 2') about a longitudinal axis (a) passing through the centre of the device (2; 2') in a direction between the first and second ends of the receptacle (4); and

-a measuring instrument (82) adapted to detect an analyte inducing a change of the test strip (56) in the test zone (74) thereof.

14. The apparatus (80) of claim 13, comprising:

-a device (2') according to any one of claims 8 to 10; and

-a dosing device (84) comprising a pipette system (86, 88, 90) configured to transfer liquid between the sample well (28 ") and the second opening (26").

15. The apparatus (80) according to claim 14, wherein the device (2') is a device according to claim 10, and the pipetting system (86, 88, 90) is configured to transfer liquid from the sample well (28 ") into the container (52) and from the container (52) to the second opening (26").
