1. A monitoring device (1, 20, 30) for monitoring a border segment (3) of a safety area (2) for detecting an object (6, 14, 19) entering or leaving the safety area (2) at least partially through the border segment (3), the monitoring device comprising:

a light curtain device (4), the light curtain device (4) detecting objects (6, 14, 19) contacting the boundary segment (3);

at least one radar device (5), which radar device (5) detects a direction of movement of the object (6, 14, 19) relative to the boundary section (3) and/or a material property of the object (6, 14, 19); and

an evaluation device (7), the evaluation device (7) transmitting an evaluation result based on a Radar Device Signal (RDS) from the radar device (5) and optionally based on a light curtain device signal (LDS) from the light curtain device (4).

2. The monitoring device according to claim 1, further comprising a protection device (21), the protection device (21) transmitting a warning signal and/or performing a predetermined protective measure based on the evaluation result.

3. The monitoring device according to claim 1 or 2, further comprising a shielding device (22), the shielding device (22) temporarily deactivating the protection device (21) and/or the light curtain device (4) depending on the evaluation result.

The monitoring device according to one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the evaluation result indicates whether the object (6, 14, 19) is inside the safety region (2) or outside the safety region (2), a direction of movement of the object (6, 14, 19) relative to the boundary section (3) detected by the radar device (5), and/or whether the object (6, 14, 19) is contacting the boundary section (3).

5. Monitoring device according to one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the radar device (5) has a detection area (15), wherein the radar device (5) and the light curtain device (4) are arranged such that the detection area (15) at least partially overlaps the boundary section (3).

6. The monitoring device according to claim 5, wherein the border section (3) is covered by the detection area (15).

7. A device as claimed in claim 5 or 6, wherein said detection area (15) has an elongated shape with a detection axis (28), and said radar means (5) and said light curtain means (4) are arranged so that said detection axis (28) extends parallel to said border segment (3).

8. A device according to claim 5 or 6, wherein said detection area (15) has an elongated shape with a detection axis (28), and said radar means (5) and said light curtain means (4) are arranged so that said detection axis (28) extends perpendicularly to said border segment (3).

9. A monitoring device according to any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the light curtain device (4) comprises a plurality of light emitting parts (4a) and a plurality of light receiving parts (4b), the plurality of light emitting parts (4a) being arranged on or at a first support part (16), the plurality of light receiving parts (4b) being arranged on or at a second support part (17), the boundary section (3) being between the first support part (16) and the second support part (17).

The monitoring device according to claim 9, wherein the radar device (5) comprises a radar transmitter (5a) and a radar receiver (5b), the radar transmitter (5a) and the radar receiver (5b) being provided at or on at least one of the first support member (16) and/or the second support member (17).

The monitoring device according to claim 9, wherein the radar device (5) comprises a radar transmitter (5a) and a radar receiver (5b), the radar transmitter (5a) and the radar receiver (5b) being arranged at a predetermined distance from the first support part (16) and the second support part (17).

12. The monitoring device according to any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the safety area (2) is located between the radar device (5) and the light curtain device (4).

13. A plant arrangement (10, 25, 35), the plant arrangement comprising:

a safety area (2), the safety area (2) being delimited by at least one boundary section (3), wherein in the safety area (2) at least one plant device (11, 26) is arranged and realized to perform a predetermined function; and

monitoring device (1, 20, 30) according to any of claims 1 to 14, the monitoring device (1, 20, 30) being realized to detect whether an object (6, 14, 19) enters or leaves the safety area (2) at least partially through the border segment (3).

14. A method of monitoring a border segment (3) of a safety area (2), the method comprising the steps of:

operating a light curtain device (4) to detect whether an object (6, 14, 19) contacts the boundary segment (3); and

simultaneously operating at least one radar device (5) to detect a direction of movement of the object (6, 14, 19) relative to the boundary section (3) and/or a material property of the object (6, 14, 19); and

-transmitting an evaluation result based on a Radar Device Signal (RDS) from the radar device (5) and optionally based on a light curtain device signal (LDS) from the light curtain device (4).
