Technical Field
The present invention relates to a method of operating a communication device in a wireless communication system, and in particular to a method of operating a communication device according to Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) techniques. The invention also relates to a communication device and a communication system supporting said method.
Background
The increasing use of mobile voice and data communications may require more efficient utilization of available radio frequency resources. In order to improve data transmission performance and reliability, a so-called Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technique may be used in a wireless radio telecommunication system to transmit information between a plurality of devices, for example, between a base station and a user equipment. The user devices may include mobile devices such as mobile phones, mobile computers, tablet computers or wearable devices, as well as stationary devices such as personal computers or cash registers. In a system using MIMO technology, the device may use multiple transmit and receive antennas. For example, both the base station and the user equipment may include multiple transmit and receive antennas. MIMO technology forms the basis of coding techniques that use both the temporal and spatial dimensions to transmit information. The enhanced coding provided in a MIMO system may improve the spectral and energy efficiency of wireless communications.
The spatial dimension may be used by spatial multiplexing. Spatial multiplexing is a transmission technique in MIMO communication for transmitting independently and separately encoded data signals (so-called streams) from each of a plurality of transmission antennas or a combination of transmission antennas. Thus, the spatial dimension is reused or multiplexed more than once.
By full-dimensional mimo (fdmimo), we mean a technique in which the signals transmitted to the antennas are arranged in the form of beams that can power multiple receivers in three dimensions. For example, a base station may include a large number of active antenna elements in a two-dimensional grid, and the use of FDMIMO technology enables many spatially separated users to be supported on the same time/frequency resource block at the same time. This may reduce interference from overlapping transmissions to other receivers and increase the power of the signal. The beams may form static or dynamic hypothetical sectors as seen at the base station. The large number of antennas of the base station can spatially focus the radio energy in the transmission and achieve direction-sensitive reception, which improves spectral efficiency and radiation efficiency. In order for the transmitted signals at the individual antennas of the base station to adapt according to the currently active receiving user equipment, the base station logic may need information about the radio channel characteristics between the user equipment and the antennas of the base station. Conversely, in order to adapt the transmitted signals at the individual antennas of the user equipment, the user equipment logic may need information about the radio channel characteristics between the base station and the user equipment's antennas. For this purpose, so-called channel sounding may be performed to determine radio channel characteristics between the user equipment and the base station. The channel sounding may include: transmitting predefined pilot signals that may enable the base station and the user equipment to set their configured antenna parameters for transmitting signals in a manner that focuses radio energy or for receiving radio signals from a particular direction.
As the operating frequency increases and thus the wavelength decreases, the antenna aperture becomes smaller, and thus the reception power can be increased using a plurality of antennas. In particular, in the case of high transmission frequencies, for example 30GHz or higher, and multiple antennas with small apertures, the reception sensitivity can depend significantly on the polarization of the transmitted radio-frequency signal. However, particularly when the user equipment is a mobile device, the polarization of the antenna of the user equipment may vary with respect to the layout of the antenna of the base station.
In evolved standards (e.g. in 3GPP RAN1 Release 15), it is defined that a base station broadcasts a beamformed synchronization signal, a so-called SS burst. Different SS bursts, aimed at different directions or polarizations, are distributed in both the time and frequency domains, such that the individual beams appear in individual sub-bands over time. The user equipment may listen to the SS bursts and may use the received signal to calibrate frequency and timing. The user equipment may scan or adjust its receive beam to find the direction associated with the strongest SS burst. However, depending on the current layout of the antennas of the user equipment, the polarization of the SS burst signal may not be optimal for the user equipment. To improve receive beam adjustment for the user equipment, the base station may repeat individual SS bursts with orthogonal polarization. However, since the user equipment may also receive SS burst signals transmitted in other sectors (e.g., neighboring sectors) or SS burst signals due to reflection, it may be difficult for the user equipment to find the strongest beam and optimize the reception beam polarization.
In view of the above, there is a need in the art for methods and apparatus that address at least some of the above-described shortcomings of conventional MIMO systems. In particular, there is a need in the art to improve the operation of devices in a wireless communication system to reduce power loss of wireless communication due to polarization misalignment.
Disclosure of Invention
According to the invention, this object is achieved by the features of the independent claims. The dependent claims define embodiments of the invention.
According to the present invention, a method of operating a communication device is provided. The communication device may operate in a wireless communication system and may have an antenna arrangement configured to adjust a polarization of a radio frequency signal to be transmitted via the antenna arrangement. The communication device may comprise, for example, a base station or an access point in a wireless communication system. According to the method, configuration data is transmitted, the configuration data indicating a first polarization of a first radio frequency signal and a second polarization of a second radio frequency signal. Also, the first radio frequency signal is transmitted using a first polarization and the second radio frequency signal is transmitted using a second polarization.
The first radio frequency signal may include a first synchronization signal and the second radio frequency signal may include a second synchronization signal. In particular, the first and second radio frequency signals may comprise shaped synchronization signals (so-called SS bursts) or pilot signals for synchronizing devices operating in the communication system and for analyzing the communication channel between devices operating in the communication system, e.g. by channel sounding. The configuration data may be transmitted using a broadcast channel. Also, the first radio frequency signal and the second radio frequency signal may be transmitted using a broadcast channel. The first polarization and the second polarization may be different. In particular, the first and second polarizations may be orthogonal to each other.
Based on the configuration data indicative of the first and second polarizations, a receiving communication device (e.g. a user equipment) receiving the first and second radio frequency signals may adjust its receiver configuration to optimize the received power and antenna gain, and may additionally request a transmitting communication device (e.g. a base station) to use a particular polarization for future transmissions, in particular for transmission of payload data. By transmitting configuration data indicating a first polarization of a first radio frequency signal and a second polarization of a second radio frequency signal, information about the polarized radio frequency signal to be transmitted is shared between the transmitting communication device and the receiving communication device, so that the receiving communication device can initiate optimization of its receiver configuration based on subsequently received first and second radio frequency signals.
According to an embodiment, the configuration data comprises: a first identifier uniquely identifying the first radio frequency signal; and a second identifier uniquely identifying the second radio frequency signal. The first identifier and the second identifier may enable the receiving communication device to reliably identify the first radio frequency signal and the second radio frequency signal. In sectorized transmission, in particular, a receiving communication device may receive radio frequency signals that are not intended for the receiving communication device. Such radio frequency signals not intended for the receiving communication device may be avoided based on considering the first identifier and the second identifier.
For example, the configuration data may include an association definition that identifies the first radio frequency signal and the second radio frequency signal and/or associates the first radio frequency signal and the second radio frequency signal with each other. Further, the configuration data may indicate that the first and second radio frequency signals differ only in their respective first and second polarizations.
According to another exemplary embodiment, the configuration data indicates a first directionality of the first radio frequency signal and a second directionality of the second radio frequency signal. The first radio frequency signal is transmitted using a first polarization and a first directivity, and the second radio frequency signal is transmitted using a second polarization and a second directivity. The first directivity and the second directivity may be the same directivity. In other words, the first radio frequency signal and the second radio frequency signal may have the same angular characteristics. The configuration data may indicate the first directionality and the second directionality with respect to a beam sweep comprising a plurality of beams of a plurality of directivities, e.g., in a sectorized full-dimensional MIMO system. Based on the directivity information, the receiving communication device can reliably identify the first radio frequency signal and the second radio frequency signal, and based on the directivity being identified as a radio frequency signal that is not intended for the receiving communication device, the receiving communication device can ignore such radio frequency signals.
According to another embodiment, a request for configuration data is received, and upon receiving the request, the configuration data is sent. A request for configuration data may be received at a transmitting communication device (e.g., a base station) from a receiving communication device (e.g., a user equipment). The user equipment may send the request, for example, upon detecting movement of the user equipment that may affect reception characteristics of the user equipment, or upon degradation of communication between the user equipment and the base station.
According to another embodiment, the configuration data comprises selector information indicating the first polarization and the second polarization based on a predefined mapping between the plurality of radio frequency signals and the plurality of polarizations. A predefined mapping, for example in the form of a table or software, may be provided in a transmitting communication device (e.g. a base station) and in a receiving communication device (e.g. a user equipment). By implementing the configuration data as selector information, the configuration data may be more compact than detailed information about the first polarization of the first radio frequency signal and the second polarization of the second radio frequency signal. Thus, the amount of data to be transmitted for transmitting the configuration data can be reduced.
According to the present invention, another method of operating a communication device is provided. The communication device may operate in a wireless communication system and may for example comprise a user equipment, in particular a mobile user equipment, such as a mobile phone, a mobile computer, a tablet computer, a wearable apparatus or a mobile accessory. The wearable device or mobile accessory may include: a wearable computer (also known as a body-borne computer), or simply a wearable item, which is a miniature electronic device that can be worn by a user under, with, or over clothing. According to the method, configuration data is received, the configuration data indicating a first polarization of a first radio frequency signal and a second polarization of a second radio frequency signal. Further, at least one of the first and second radio frequency signals is received and, based on the configuration data, a combined power of the at least one of the first and second radio frequency signals is determined.
For example, the first radio frequency signal may include a first synchronization signal and the second radio frequency signal may include a second synchronization signal. In another example, the first and second radio frequency signals may each include a pilot signal for channel sounding a communication channel between another communication device (e.g., a base station or access point of a wireless communication system) and a receiving communication device (e.g., a user device). The configuration data may indicate that the first polarization is orthogonal with respect to the second polarization. The communication device may comprise an antenna arrangement which receives the configuration data, the first radio frequency signal and the second radio frequency signal. The antenna arrangement may comprise a plurality of antennas. The combined power of the first received radio frequency signal and the second received radio frequency signal may be optimized, for example by configuring received parameters of an antenna arrangement of the communication device. For example, the combined power may comprise a function of the first radio frequency signal, the second radio frequency signal, and the combination information, which may comprise, for example, phase information and weighting information used in combining the first radio frequency signal and the second radio frequency signal. The combining information may be changed in order to optimize the combined power. In other words, radio frequency signals having different polarizations are received at a communication device, and then a preferred polarization for the current reception situation of the communication device is determined. Thus, the reception parameters of the communication device can be adapted. The preferred polarization may be communicated to a transmitting communication device (e.g., a base station or access point of a wireless communication system), and the transmitting communication device may adapt its polarization setting when transmitting subsequent payload data. Therefore, the transmission power can be effectively used.
According to an embodiment, the configuration data comprises: a first identifier uniquely identifying the first radio frequency signal; and a second identifier uniquely identifying the second radio frequency signal. The first identifier and the second identifier may enable the communication device to reliably identify the first radio frequency signal and the second radio frequency signal. For example, in sectorized transmission, a communication device may receive radio frequency signals that are not intended for the communication device, e.g., due to reflections in street canyons. Based on the first identifier and the second identifier, the communication device may ignore such radio frequency signals that are not intended for the communication device, based on considerations based on the first identifier and the second identifier.
According to an embodiment, a request for configuration data is sent. A request for configuration data may be transmitted from a communication device to another communication device (e.g., a base station) in a wireless communication system. The communication device may send the request, for example, upon detecting the following movement of the communication device: the movement may affect reception characteristics of the communication device related to the polarization of the received radio frequency signal. Thus, by sending the request, a readjustment of the receiving configuration at the communication device and possibly a readjustment of the sending configuration at the other communication device may be initiated.
According to another embodiment, the configuration data comprises selector information indicating the first polarization and the second polarization based on a predefined mapping between the plurality of radio frequency signals and the plurality of polarizations. A predefined mapping, e.g., a table indicating associations between radio frequency signals and assigned polarizations, may be provided in a communication device (e.g., a user equipment) as well as in another communication device (e.g., a base station of a wireless communication system). The selector information may be more compact than the detailed information explicitly indicating the first polarization of the first radio frequency signal and the second polarization of the second radio frequency signal. Thus, the amount of data to be transmitted as configuration data can be reduced.
According to another aspect of the present invention, a communication device is provided. In a wireless communication system, the communication device may operate, for example, as a base station or an access point. The communication device includes an antenna arrangement and logic coupled to the antenna arrangement. The antenna arrangement may be configured to adjust the polarization of a radio frequency signal to be transmitted via the antenna arrangement. The logic is configured to transmit, via the antenna arrangement, configuration data indicating a first polarization of the first radio frequency signal and a second polarization of the second radio frequency signal. The logic is also configured to transmit, via the antenna apparatus, a first radio frequency signal using a first polarization and a second radio frequency signal using a second polarization. The first and second polarizations may be different, for example, the first polarization may be orthogonal to the second polarization. The communication device may be configured to perform the above-described method and embodiments thereof as a transmitting communication device (e.g. as a base station).
According to another aspect of the present invention, a communication device is provided. In a wireless communication system, the communication device may operate, for example, as a user equipment. The communication device includes an antenna arrangement and logic coupled to the antenna arrangement. The logic is configured to receive, via the antenna arrangement, configuration data indicating a first polarization of the first radio frequency signal and a second polarization of the second radio frequency signal. The logic is also configured to receive at least one of the first radio frequency signal and the second radio frequency signal via the antenna apparatus. The logic is configured to determine a combined power of the at least one of the first and second radio frequency signals based on the configuration data. The first and second polarizations may be different, for example, the first polarization may be orthogonal to the second polarization. Also, the logic may be configured to optimize the combined power by changing the combined information related to the first radio frequency signal and the second radio frequency signal. In particular, the combined power may be a function of the first and second radio frequency signals and the combined information. The power of each of the first and second radio frequency signals may be represented by a complex value. The combined power can be optimized by changing the combination information, for example, by weighting and phase-shifting power values (absolute values) of the first radio frequency signal and the second radio frequency signal so that the combined power becomes maximum. The communication device may be configured to perform the above-described method, for example, as a user equipment.
Finally, according to the present invention, there is provided a wireless communication system including the above-described communication apparatus, for example, at least one communication apparatus (e.g., a base station or an access point of the wireless communication system) serving as a transmitting communication apparatus, and at least one communication apparatus (e.g., a user equipment) serving as a receiving communication apparatus.

As can be seen from fig. 3, the respective antenna powers 401, 402 (including the optimal combined power of the horizontally polarized radio frequency signal and the vertically polarized radio frequency signal of the respective antenna) are weighted with corresponding weighting information and phase shifted with corresponding phase information. The weighting information for each antenna is separate. The weighting may be based on a weighting factor used to add the signal levels. Thus, the sum of the weighting factors across all antennas can be normalized to one. Since the powers are added to optimize the antenna gain Popt, the weighting information may include a squared weighting factor. In the case of only two antennas, the weighting factors may be γ and (1- γ), so the weighting information is γ2And (1-gamma)2As shown in fig. 3. In case of more than two antennas different weighting factors may be used, wherein the sum is also one. The optimal antenna powers 401 and 402 are weighted according to their corresponding weighting information, phase-shifted according to their corresponding phase information, and finally added to obtain the optimal received power Popt. In the above description, although the configuration data is transmitted from the base station to the user equipment, the same method may be performed in the opposite direction according to the capabilities of the involved devices. For example, a user equipment with a correspondingly configured antenna arrangement may also transmit configuration data indicating a first polarization of a first radio frequency signal and a second polarization of a second radio frequency signal, transmit the first radio frequency signal using the first polarization, and transmit the second radio frequency signal using the second polarization. Likewise, the base station may receive configuration data indicating a first polarization of the first radio frequency signal and a second polarization of the second radio frequency signal, receive at least one of the first radio frequency signal and the second radio frequency signal, and determine a combined power of the at least one of the first radio frequency signal and the second radio frequency signal based on the configuration data.
