1. A dual pump dispensing system, comprising:

a container (1) having:

a first reservoir (1c) for storing a fluid,

a neck (1d), and

an entry port into the first reservoir through an opening (1f) of the neck of the container;

a collar (60) attached to the neck (1d) of the container (1);

a cartridge (10) comprising:

a top (10b) secured into the collar (60);

a bottom (10a) inserted through the neck (1d) of the container (1) and extending down into the first reservoir (1c) of the container;

an inner wall (10e) dividing the interior of the cartridge (10) into a passage (10f) and a second reservoir (10c), wherein:

the passage is open at both ends of the barrel, an

The second reservoir is closed at the bottom (10a) of the cartridge;

a first mechanical pump dispenser (30) located in the passageway (10f) of the cartridge (10) and having:

a dip tube (30a) extending down into the first reservoir (1c), and

an upper rod (30b) projecting through the collar (60);

a second mechanical pump dispenser (40) located in the second reservoir (10c) of the cartridge (10) and having:

a dip tube (40a) extending towards the bottom (10a) of the cartridge, and,

2. The dual pump dispensing system of claim 1, further comprising a first flowable product (90) in the first reservoir (1c), and a second flowable product (100) in the second reservoir (10 c).

3. The dual pump dispensing system of claim 2, wherein a single push of the actuator (70) causes the first and second flowable products (90, 100) to be dispensed at a rate of 5:1 to 20: a volume ratio of 1 is dispensed.

4. The dual pump dispensing system of claim 2, wherein the actuator includes two outlet orifices.

5. The dual pump dispensing system of claim 2, wherein an outer surface of the cartridge (10) is visible through the container (1) and the first flowable product (90).

6. The dual pump dispensing system of claim 5, wherein the first flowable product (90) is a clear aqueous gel product.

7. A kit (200) comprising a container assembly (300) and a cartridge assembly (400), wherein:

the container assembly includes:

a container (1) having:

a first reservoir (1c) holding a first flowable product (90),

a neck part (1d),

an entry port into the first reservoir through an opening (1f) in the neck (1d) of the container (1); and

a non-dispensing closure (110) sealing the opening (1f) in the neck (1d) of the container (1);

the cartridge assembly (400) includes:

a collar (60) attachable to the neck (1d) of the container (1);

a cartridge (10) dimensioned to pass through an opening (1f) of the neck (1d) of the container (1), comprising:

a top (10b) secured in the collar (60);

a bottom (10 a);

an inner wall (10e) dividing the interior of the cartridge (10) into a passage (10f) and a second reservoir (10c), wherein:

said passage being open at both ends of said cartridge (10),

the second reservoir is closed at the bottom (10a) of the cartridge and holds a second flowable product (100);

a first mechanical pump dispenser (30) located in the passageway (10f) of the cartridge (10) and having:

a dip tube (30a) extending downwardly through the passageway (10f), an

8. A method of using the kit (200) of claim 7, comprising the steps of:

removing the non-dispensing closure (110) from the container (1) of the container assembly (300),

inserting the bottom (10b) of the cartridge (10) of the cartridge assembly (400) into the first reservoir (1c),

screwing the collar (60) onto the threaded mouth (1e) of the neck (1d), pressing the actuator (70) until the desired amounts of the first and second flowable products (90, 100) are dispensed from the actuator, and applying both products simultaneously to the skin.

Background

Cosmetic and personal care lotion dispensers are known that dispense two different products simultaneously. These typically use two product reservoirs arranged side by side. These may be further differentiated depending on whether the system uses two separately acting pumps, one for each reservoir, or one for pumping product from both reservoirs. In the first case, the two products do not mix before being dispensed onto the application surface (e.g. skin). This type of system is preferred when the two products react with each other and should be prevented from reacting until the moment of use. In the latter case, the product is mixed in the accumulator of the pump. Since there will always be some product in the accumulator between uses, it may be preferable if the two products do not react with each other. In either case, the side-by-side arrangement of the two reservoirs adversely affects the overall appearance of the product package. For example, a clear glass or plastic reservoir allows the consumer to see two products and two pump dispensers. This may be undesirable. Furthermore, both products must have a finished appearance on the consumer market, since both products are visible. Appearance is a quality that may not be as relevant to efficacy, but achieving a finished appearance does add cost. On the other hand, the reservoir may be opaque, such that the product and multiple pump mechanisms are not visible, but design options are limited by a dual pump system in which the high end appearance of the light-transmissive package may be preferred.

Purpose(s) to

It is a primary object of the present invention to provide a dual pump dispensing system that simultaneously dispenses two different products in a prescribed volumetric ratio so that the products do not mix before exiting the dispensing system. It is another object of the present invention to provide a dual pump dispensing system that does not detract from the appearance of the product package. It is another object to provide a dual pump dispensing system that provides a new option for enhancing the appearance of the product package.

Disclosure of Invention

The dual pump dispensing system of the present invention has a reservoir within a reservoir unit. Each reservoir holds a different product and has a separate pump dispenser. The pump dispenser is housed in a cartridge so that the consumer does not see too many of these mechanisms. The pump is sized to dose each product in a specified volumetric ratio and the products can only be mixed at the exit orifice of the nozzle or on the skin.

Also described herein is a kit including a first reservoir of a first flowable product sealed with a non-dispensing closure. Separately from the first reservoir, the kit also includes a cartridge containing a second reservoir containing a second flowable product. The second reservoir is equipped with a dual pump dispensing system and is intended to be inserted into the first reservoir by a user or consumer.

Detailed Description

A dual pump dispensing system according to an embodiment of the present invention may include a container (1), a cartridge (10), a gasket (20), a first mechanical pump dispenser (30), a second mechanical pump dispenser (40), a cartridge cap (50), a collar (60), an actuator (70), and a top cap (80).

Container with a lid

Referring to fig. 1, the container (1) is part of a system that can be grasped by a user's hand. The container includes a bottom (1a), a top (1b), and a primary or first reservoir (1c) for holding a first flowable product (90). The top (1b) of the container comprises a neck (1d) with means for attaching a collar (60). For example, the neck of the container may have a threaded mouth (1 e). The entry port into the first reservoir is through an opening (1f) in the neck of the container. Typically, all or a portion of the container may be transparent, translucent, or opaque.

Cartridge

The dual pump dispensing system according to the present invention comprises a cartridge (10). As shown in fig. 2A, 2B and 2C, the cartridge is substantially cylindrical, although this is not a strict requirement. The cartridge has a bottom (10a) and a top (10 b). The bottom of the cartridge is inserted through the neck (1d) of the container (1) and extends downwardly into the product (90) located in the first reservoir (1c) of the container. The top of the barrel has a flange (10d), the flange (10d) being supported by the top of the neck (1 d). To achieve a fluid tight seal, a gasket (20) may be provided between the top of the neck of the container and the flange of the cartridge (see fig. 4).

The cartridge (10) further comprises an inner wall (10e) separating the interior of the cartridge. One of the inner partitions of the cartridge is formed as a passage (10f) opening at both ends of the cartridge. The opening at the top of the cartridge is a first top opening (10 g). An opening at the bottom of the cartridge (10h) allows the first flowable product (90) to enter the passageway (10 f). The other internal compartment of the cartridge is formed as a second reservoir (10c) which is closed at the bottom (10a) of the cartridge and the opening at the top of the cartridge is a second top opening (10 i). The second reservoir is for holding a second flowable product (100).

The outer surface of the barrel may optionally include a logo or other decorative element (10 j; see fig. 9). This feature will be particularly relevant to certain embodiments of the invention described below.

Two mechanical pump type distributor

The dual pump dispensing system according to the present invention comprises two mechanical pump dispensers (hereinafter, a first pump (30) and a second pump (40)). Referring to fig. 3 and 4, both pumps include components well known to those skilled in the art, such as dip tubes (30a, 40a), upper rods (30b, 40b), check valves (30c, 40c), accumulators (30d, 40d), and springs (30g, 40g), as well as pistons and lower rods.

The first pump (30) is inserted through the first top opening (10g) of the passageway (10f) of the cartridge (10) such that a majority of the first pump is located in the passageway. However, the upper stem (30b) of the first pump rises above the top (10b) of the cartridge and the free end of the dip tube (30a) of the first pump extends out of the bottom (10a) of the cartridge into the first reservoir (1c) of the container (1) to a position near the bottom (1a) of the container. The first pump draws product (90) from the first reservoir through a dip tube (30a) and transfers it to the upper stem (30b) in the usual manner of paint pump dispensers.

The second pump (40) is inserted through the second top opening (10i) of the second reservoir (10c) of the cartridge (10) such that a majority of the second pump is located in the second reservoir. However, the upper stem (40b) of the second pump rises above the top (10b) of the cartridge and the free end of the dip tube (40a) of the second pump extends towards the closed portion of the bottom (10a) of the cartridge. The second pump draws product (100) from the second reservoir of the cartridge through a dip tube (40a) and transfers it to the upper stem (40b) in the usual manner of paint pump dispensers.

One of the challenges to be overcome in developing a commercially acceptable embodiment of the present invention is how to keep the diameter of the cartridge (10) small while still being able to fit two functioning mechanical pump dispensers into the cartridge. The outer diameter of the cartridge must be as small as possible so that the opening (1f) in the neck (1c) of the container (1) can be accessed as is typical of products in the personal care field. For example, in various embodiments of the present invention, we reduce the outside diameter of the cartridge to about 23 mm to fit into a container opening of less than 24 mm.

Barrel cap

Optionally, the top of the cartridge (10) is fitted with a cartridge cap (50, see fig. 5A and 5B). On the bottom of the cartridge cap are first and second vertical walls (50a, 50b) whose shape matches the shape of corresponding first and second openings (10g or 10i) at the top of the cartridge. The vertical wall fits snugly in the opening at the top of the cartridge, tight enough to hold the cartridge cap in the cartridge. First and second openings (50g, 50i) pass through the cartridge cap, each opening being surrounded by one of the vertical walls (50a, 50 b). The reservoirs (30d, 40d) of the first and second pumps (30, 40) pass through two openings of the cartridge cap shaped and sized to fit snugly around the reservoirs, thereby providing stability to the two pumps. Alternatively, the reservoir of one or both of the pumps may be integrally molded with the cartridge cap. For example, in fig. 5B, the accumulator (40d) of the second pump (40) is shown as being integrally molded with the cartridge cap (50), while the accumulator (30d) of the first pump (30) is intended to be inserted through the first opening (50g) of the cartridge cap.

Lantern ring

As shown in fig. 6A and 6B, the collar (60) includes an upper circumferential wall (60a) and a lower circumferential wall (60B) separated by a base (60 c). The base has first and second openings (60g, 60i), the first and second openings (60g, 60i) corresponding to the first and second top openings (10g, 10i) of the cartridge. A flange (10d) at the top of the cartridge (10) is received into the collar (60), against the underside of the base (60c), and secured there by a friction fit, locking tabs or some other method suitable for securing the plastic components together. The first and second openings (60g, 60i) in the base, the first and second top openings (10g, 10i) of the cartridge and the first and second openings (50g, 50i) of the cartridge cap, if present, must be aligned respectively, in order to allow the upper rods (30b, 40b) of the two pumps (30, 40) to protrude through the base. When the second mechanical pump dispenser is in the second reservoir and the flange (10d) of the cartridge (10) is secured in the collar (60), then the second flowable product is effectively sealed from the environment and maintained in a fresh and stable condition.

The inner surface of the lower circumferential wall (60b) comprises a thread (60e), the thread (60e) being designed to interact with a threaded mouth (1e) of a neck (1d) of the container (1). This threaded engagement secures the cartridge with the two pumps to the container (1). When the collar is fully screwed onto the container neck, the first flowable product is effectively sealed from the environment and maintained in a fresh and stable state.

Actuator

As depicted, the two upper rods (30b, 40b) of the two pumps (30, 40) protrude through the collar (60). A single actuator (70, see fig. 7A and 7B) includes two inlet ports (70a, 70B). Each port is capable of receiving one of the upper rods. Two channels (70c, 70d) lead from the inlet port to at least one (one or two) outlet hole (70e) of the actuator. If there is only one outlet orifice, the two channels merge into one immediately before reaching the outlet orifice and the two flowable products (90, 100) begin to mix in the actuator. Alternatively, if there are two outlet orifices, each channel leads to one outlet orifice and the two flowable products do not mix until completely outside the dispensing device; for example on the skin of the user. The housing (70g) may be used as a decorative element of the actuator or to provide a tactile element.

Top cap

The outer surface of the upper circumferential wall (60a) of the collar (60) provides a surface to which the overcap (80) is secured by a friction fit. The top cap may serve to protect the actuator (70) and give the package a more finished appearance. The top cap may be transparent, translucent or opaque.

Two flowable products

A first flowable product (90) is contained in a first reservoir (1c) of the container (1). A second flowable product (100) is contained in a second reservoir (10c) of the cartridge (10). Preferred flowable products are viscous and do not include, for example, powder products. The preferred flowable products are generally paints or creams of sufficiently low viscosity that they can be pumped by the first and second mechanical pump dispensers (30, 40). With this dispensing system, a single push of the actuator (70) results in a single dose of both products (90, 100) being dispensed in a defined volume ratio. In the personal care field, there are various dosage paint pump dispensers. Such pumps typically dispense from about 25 μ L to about 500 μ L of product per dose. Thus, the volume ratio of a single dose of dispensed product may be in the range of about 1:1 to about 20:1, as desired, by appropriate design or selection of the pump dispenser, to ensure complete reaction of the dispensed product, or to ensure a particular consumer experience or benefit. Examples of useful product ratios include ratios from 1:1 to 20:1, preferably from 5:1 to 20:1, or more preferably from 5:1 to 15:1, even more preferably from 5:1 to 10: 1. Typically, the second mechanical pump dispenser (40) drawing from the second reservoir (10c) located in the cartridge (10) will be a smaller dispensing pump, as the pump draws from the smaller of the two reservoirs. Also, the first pump (30) will be a larger dosing pump, as it draws from the larger first reservoir (1 c). Alternatively, the first reservoir and the second reservoir will be filled at the same ratio as the dosing ratio of the two pumps, so that both containers are almost simultaneously depleted.

The two flowable products (90, 100) can be inert with respect to each other, but a significant advantage of the present invention is that the two products that would otherwise react with each other can be separated and not mixed until use, thereby ensuring efficacy and freshness.

Another significant advantage of the present invention is the ability to fill the first reservoir (1c) with a primary personal care product (90), the primary personal care product (90) providing general benefits to the skin or hair, and to fill the second reservoir (10c) with a secondary personal care product (100), the secondary personal care product (100) having a particular skin care activity to meet one or more particular needs. For example, a first reservoir may be filled with a popular skin moisturizer, while a second (cartridge) reservoir holds a product with one or more active ingredients for treating fine lines and wrinkles, or uneven skin tone, or uneven skin texture, or anti-irritation or fatigue products, etc. Alternatively, the first reservoir may be filled with the same popular skin moisturizer, while the second (cartridge) reservoir holds a product with one or more active ingredients for cleaning, toning, treating acne, preventing sun damage, providing post-sun treatment, and the like. Thus, the present invention provides a simple, inexpensive way for consumers to try a "hero" product in combination with many other skin benefit products to obtain additional benefits. From a commercial perspective, marketers can display a single primary product in a number of variations depending on the number of secondary products. The consumer benefits from the convenience of using the combination in only one purchase.

The first time the dual pump dispenser of the present invention is used, several presses are required to prime both mechanical pump dispensers (30, 40). Alternatively, and by design, the second mechanical pump dispenser may require more presses to prime than the first mechanical pump dispenser. This will ensure that the active ingredient in the second reservoir (10c) does not self-dispense before the humectant in the first reservoir (1 c). This may be advantageous when the second (cartridge) reservoir contains one or more ingredients in concentrated form that may irritate the skin when in undiluted form. For example, by design, the first mechanical pump dispenser (30) may require 1-6 presses to prime, while the second mechanical pump dispenser (40) will require 6-10 presses to prime.

As described above, the first reservoir (1c) and the second reservoir (10c) may be filled at the same ratio as the dosing ratio of the two mechanical pump dispensers (30, 40) such that the two reservoirs are depleted substantially simultaneously. However, it is sometimes advantageous to ensure that the second reservoir is emptied before the first reservoir. For example, when the second flowable product (100) in the second reservoir contains one or more ingredients that may be irritating to the skin when in undiluted form, in concentrated form, it is desirable to ensure that the second flowable product runs out before the first flowable product (90). This may be achieved by ensuring that the fill ratio of the first reservoir to the second reservoir exceeds the dosing ratio of the first mechanical pump dispenser to the second mechanical pump dispenser. This also ensures that the concentrated product (100) of the second reservoir is always diluted in the first product at a set ratio.

External member

The present invention may also be implemented as a kit. Some embodiments of a kit (200) according to the present disclosure include a container assembly (300) and a cartridge assembly (400). The container assembly comprises a container (1) of a first flowable product (90), wherein the container is provided with a non-dispensing closure, such as a threaded cap (110) dimensioned to cooperate with a threaded mouth (1e) of a neck (1 d). When the cooperating threads are fully engaged, the cap seals the entry port (opening 1f) of the first flowable product in the first reservoir (1 c). The first flowable product is maintained in a fresh and stable state for sale in a commercial environment.

Separately, as described above, the cartridge assembly (400) includes a collar (60), a cartridge (10) sized to fit into an opening (1f) of a container (1), two mechanical pump dispensers (30, 40) with an actuator (70). The second reservoir holds a second flowable product (100). As mentioned above, when the second mechanical pump dispenser (40) is located in the second reservoir (10c) and the flange (10d) of the cartridge is secured to the collar (60), then the second flowable product is effectively sealed from the environment and maintained in a fresh and stable condition for sale in a commercial environment. As described above, to protect the actuator (70) and the finished appearance, a top cap (80) may be fitted to the collar.

A consumer purchases a container assembly (300) of a first flowable product (90) and a cartridge assembly (400) of a second flowable product (100). The consumer may then be provided with a choice of one or more second flowable products to match the one or more first flowable products. After purchase, the consumer intends to remove the non-dispensing closure (110) from the container (1) and insert the cartridge (10) into the first reservoir, and then screw the collar (60) onto the threaded mouth (1e) of the neck (1 d).

Methods of using the kits described herein may include the steps of:

removing the non-dispensing closure (110) from the container (1) of the container assembly (300), inserting the bottom (10b) of the cartridge (10) of the cartridge assembly (400) into the first reservoir (1c), screwing the collar (60) onto the threaded mouth (1e) of the neck (1d), pressing the actuator (70) until the desired amount of the first and second flowable products (90, 100) are dispensed from the actuator, and simultaneously applying both products onto the skin of the user.

Some optional features

Referring to fig. 8 and 9, the outer surface of the barrel may be any color or colors, and may optionally include a logo or other decorative element (10 j). This is advantageous in many cases. For example, when the cartridge is sold as part of a kit, then the outer surface of the cartridge is visible, and providing the outer surface of the cartridge with a color, graphic, and/or logo will enhance the appeal of the product in the marketplace.

Further, for example, when all or a portion of the container (1) is transparent and the reservoir (1c) contains the first flowable product (91) that is light transmissive, then the exterior surface of the cartridge (10) can be seen through the container and the first flowable product. In this case, providing a color, graphic and/or logo (10j) will enhance the appeal of the product in the market. This particularly preferred form is when the container and the first flowable product have a very high transparency (see figure 9). For example, such a product may be an aqueous gel product. In the personal care market, high light transmission of packaging and products almost always conveys a high-end or high-end fashion look. The transparency of the container and the first flowable product creates an opportunity to display a range of aesthetic elements to further enhance visual interest and appeal.
