The vessel control unit (204) or the remote control unit (202) is configured to determine a quality of a connection between the transceiver (12) of the vessel (1) and the transceiver (16) of the remote control center (18).)

1. A system for controlling a vessel, the system comprising:

a ship having:

a vessel control unit configured to determine situational information of the vessel; and

a transceiver connected to the vessel control unit and configured to transmit the situational information; and

a remote control center remote from the vessel, the remote control center comprising:

a transceiver configured to receive situational information for the vessel; and

a remote control unit configured to determine piloting control information for maneuvering the vessel based on the situational information and configured to transmit the piloting control information to the vessel via the transceiver of the remote control center,

wherein the vessel control unit or the remote control unit is configured to determine a quality of a connection between a transceiver of the vessel and a transceiver of the remote control center.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the vessel control unit or the remote control unit is configured to determine the quality of the connection based on a determination of a delay of the connection.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the determination of the delay comprises determining whether a latency is below a predetermined operational delay threshold.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein if the time delay is above the predetermined operational delay threshold, the vessel control unit or the remote control unit is configured to determine a priority of the situational information based on a type of the situational information sent from the vessel to the remote control center.

5. The system of claim 3 or 4, wherein the predetermined operational delay threshold is dynamic such that the predetermined operational delay threshold can be changed according to a state of the vessel.

6. The system of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the vessel control unit or the remote control unit is configured to determine the quality of the connection based on a determination of a bandwidth of the connection.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the determination of the bandwidth comprises determining whether the bandwidth is above a predetermined operational bandwidth threshold.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein if the bandwidth is below the predetermined operational bandwidth threshold, the vessel control unit or the remote control unit is configured to determine a priority of the situational information based on a type of the situational information sent from the vessel to the remote control center.

9. The system of claim 7 or 8, wherein the predetermined operational bandwidth threshold is dynamic such that it can be changed according to the state of the vessel.

10. A system according to claim 4 or 8, wherein the quality of the connection is repeatedly tested so that the type of situational information sent can vary depending on the quality of the connection.

11. The system of any preceding claim, wherein the vessel control unit or the remote control unit is configured to determine a priority of available bandwidth of a connection between a transceiver of the vessel and a transceiver of the remote control center based on the situational information.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the priority of the available bandwidth is determined based on a proximity of the vessel to a berthing location.

13. The system of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the vessel control unit or the remote control unit is configured to determine the quality of the connection based on the reliability of the connection.

14. The system of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the remote control unit is configured to determine a priority of a first connection between the transceiver of the vessel and the transceiver of the remote control center and a second connection between the transceiver of another vessel and the transceiver of the remote control center based on situational information of the respective vessels.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the remote control unit is configured to prioritize the bandwidth of the first and second connections based on a relative location of the respective vessel to the remote control center.

16. The system of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the vessel is a container vessel.

17. A remote control center for controlling a vessel, the remote control center comprising:

a transceiver configured to receive situational information for the vessel; and

a remote control unit configured to determine piloting control information for maneuvering the vessel based on the situational information and configured to transmit the piloting control information to the vessel,

wherein the remote control unit is configured to determine a quality of a connection between the vessel and a transceiver of the remote control center.

18. A marine vessel, the vessel comprising:

a vessel control unit configured to determine situational information of the vessel; and

a transceiver connected to the vessel control unit and configured to transmit the situational information to a remote control center and receive piloting control information determined based on the situational information from the remote control center;

wherein the vessel control unit is configured to determine a quality of a connection between a transceiver of the vessel and the remote control center.

19. The vessel according to claim 18, wherein the vessel control unit is configured to determine the quality of the connection based on a determination of a delay and/or bandwidth of the connection.

20. The vessel of claim 19, wherein:

the determination of the delay comprises determining whether the latency is below a predetermined operational delay threshold; and is

The determination of the bandwidth includes determining whether the bandwidth is above a predetermined operational bandwidth threshold.

21. The vessel of claim 20, wherein:

if in the determination of the delay, the latency is above the predetermined operational delay threshold; and/or

If in the determination of the bandwidth, the bandwidth is below the predetermined operational bandwidth threshold;

the vessel control unit is configured to determine a priority of the situational information based on the type of the situational information sent from the vessel to the remote control center.

22. The vessel of claim 20 or 21, wherein:

the predetermined operational delay threshold is dynamic such that the predetermined operational delay threshold can be changed according to a state of the vessel; and/or

The predetermined operational bandwidth threshold is dynamic such that the predetermined operational bandwidth threshold can be changed according to a state of the vessel.

23. The vessel according to any one of claims 18 to 22, wherein the vessel control unit is configured to determine a priority of available bandwidth of a connection between a transceiver of the vessel and the remote control center based on the situational information.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein the priority of the available bandwidth is determined based on a proximity of the vessel to a berthing location.

25. A method for controlling a vessel, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving situational information for the vessel in a control center remote from the vessel;

determining piloting control information for maneuvering the vessel based on the situational information;

sending the piloting control information to the vessel;

receiving the piloting control information in a vessel control unit of the vessel; and

determining a quality of a connection between the vessel and the remote control center.
