Disclosure of Invention

A first aspect of the invention is a premix gas burner comprising a metal mounting plate, a metal plate structure and a burner deck for mounting the premix gas burner in a heating appliance. The burner deck comprises and preferably consists of a woven wire mesh over the outer surface of which the premixed gas is combusted after it has flowed through the woven wire mesh. The woven wire mesh includes a circumferential edge. The circumferential edge includes a plurality of tabs. The mounting plate includes a central opening. The burner deck is inserted through the central opening. The metal mounting plate or metal plate structure includes at least one ridge. The at least one ridge includes at least one notch. Each tab is positioned in the notch. The metal mounting plate and the metal plate structure contact each other at a top of the ridge such that an open side of the at least one indentation is covered; and such that the tab is retained between the metal mounting plate and the metal plate structure, the tab having play relative to the metal mounting plate and relative to the metal plate structure.

Woven wire mesh burner platforms of surface stabilized premixed gas burners become hot when the burner is in use. Woven wire mesh combustor platforms need to be able to handle the stresses caused by thermal expansion associated with high temperatures when the combustor is in use and the stresses caused by shrinkage when the combustor is not in use. If this is not the case, early mechanical failure of the combustor platform may occur. Due to the provision of play of the at least one tab relative to the metal mounting plate and relative to the metal plate structure, a certain amount of movement of the woven wire mesh relative to the mounting metal plate and the metal plate structure is possible when the woven wire mesh expands upon heating or contracts upon cooling. It is therefore surprising that the premix gas burner of the invention is very well adapted to withstand thermal expansion and contraction, resulting in a long life of the premix gas burner.

Preferably, the tab comprises or is made from a woven wire mesh. More preferably, the tab is an integral part of the woven wire mesh.

The metal plate structure may be, for example, welded to a metal mounting plate.

Preferably, in operation of the burner, the premixed gas is fed to the burner deck through the central opening.

The preferred tab has a substantially rectangular shape. Preferred tabs have a width of between 4mm and 32 mm; more preferably between 6mm and 20 mm.

Preferred tabs have a height of between 1mm and 12 mm; more preferably between 3mm and 6 mm.

Preferred tabs have a maximum width of between 4mm and 32 mm; more preferably less than 20 mm; more preferably between 6mm and 20 mm. Preferred tabs have a maximum height of between 3mm and 6 mm.

Preferably, the woven wire mesh has a thickness between 0.6mm and 1.3 mm. As an example, a woven wire mesh of 0.9mm thickness may be advantageously used in the present invention.

In a preferred embodiment, the woven wire mesh comprises neither ribs nor protrusions.

In a preferred embodiment, the woven wire mesh comprises ribs and/or protrusions.

Preferably, the tab presents a play of at least 0.4mm with respect to the metal mounting plate and with respect to the metal plate structure. More preferably, the play is between 0.4mm and 1 mm; even more preferably, the play is between 0.5 and 0.8 mm. Play refers to the difference between the metal mounting plate and the metal plate structure, then minus the thickness of the woven wire mesh.

In a preferred premix gas burner, at least one ridge is provided in the metal mounting plate. At least one ridge is disposed at least partially around the central opening. At least one ridge extends toward the first side relative to a plane of the metal mounting plate. The burner deck extends towards the other side of the plane of the metal mounting plate than the first side. The metal plate structure covers the open side of the at least one indentation such that the tab is retained between the metal mounting plate and the metal plate structure, the tab having play relative to the metal mounting plate and relative to the metal plate structure.

In a preferred premix gas burner, at least one ridge is provided in the metal plate structure. The at least one ridge extends towards the first side relative to a plane of the metal plate structure in which the at least one ridge is arranged. The burner deck extends through the central opening to the first side relative to a plane of the metal plate structure in which the at least one ridge is provided. The metal mounting plate covers the open side of the at least one indentation such that the tab is retained between the metal mounting plate and the metal plate structure, the tab having play relative to the metal mounting plate and relative to the metal plate structure.

Preferably, the tabs are parallel to the plane of the metal mounting plate.

Preferably, the ridge surrounds the entire burner deck.

In a preferred embodiment, the burner deck is arranged in a convex shape. This means that the flame of the burner is anchored on the convex side of the burner deck when the burner is in operation. More preferably, the entire surface of the burner deck is provided in a convex shape; meaning that the entire surface of the burner deck on the side where the flame is anchored has a convex shape when the burner is in operation.

In a preferred embodiment, the periphery of the burner deck has a rectangular shape, wherein the two short sides are rounded. More preferably, the short sides of the rectangle are continuously rounded. In embodiments where the periphery of the burner deck has a rectangular shape, wherein the two short sides are (preferably continuously) rounded, the tabs are preferably provided only along the two long sides of the rectangular shape of the periphery of the burner deck. Meaning that no tab is provided along the short side, which may be continuously rounded. The burner according to this embodiment is even better suited for long life use, since the absence of tabs along the short sides allows for better thermal expansion of the woven wire in its length direction. Furthermore, such a burner can be manufactured more easily.

Preferably, the burner comprises a perforated plate section for flowing the premixed gas through perforations of the perforated plate section before flowing the premixed gas through the woven wire mesh. More preferably, the perforated plate section is an integral part of the metal plate structure. Even more preferably, the perforated plate section and the metal plate structure are one single metal plate. Perforated plate segments are provided to properly distribute the premixed gas to the woven wire mesh combustor platform.

In an embodiment, wherein the burner comprises a perforated plate section arranged for flowing the premixed gas through perforations of the perforated plate section before flowing the premixed gas through the woven wire, all areas of the perforated plate section provided with perforations are arranged at a distance from the woven wire. This means that no perforation is in contact with the woven wire, but the perforation is positioned at a distance from the woven wire.

A second aspect of the invention is a condensing boiler comprising a premix gas burner as described in any embodiment of the first aspect of the invention. Preferably, the condensing boiler comprises a cast aluminium heat exchanger.

Drawings

Fig. 1 shows a premix gas burner according to the invention.

Detailed Description

Fig. 1 shows an exploded view of an example of a premix gas burner 100 according to the invention. The premixed gas burner 100 includes: a metal mounting plate 102 for mounting the premixed gas burner in the heating apparatus; a metal plate structure 104 and a burner deck 106. The entire surface of the burner deck has a convex shape. The burner deck consists of a woven wire mesh over the outer surface of which the premixed gas is burned after it has flowed through the woven wire mesh. For example, the woven wire mesh has a thickness of 0.9 mm. The woven screen includes a peripheral edge 108. The circumferential edge includes a plurality of tabs 110. The tab is an integral part of the woven wire mesh. In the burner, the tabs are parallel to the mounting plate.

The mounting plate includes a central opening. The burner deck is inserted through the central opening. The central opening is also configured to supply premixed gas to the combustor when the combustor is operating. The metal mounting plate 102 includes a ridge 112. The ridges surround the complete burner deck. The ridge includes a plurality of notches 114.

In the burner, each tab 110 is positioned in a notch 114. In the burner, the metal mounting plate 102 and the metal plate structure 104 are in contact with each other on top of the ridge such that the open side of the at least one indentation is covered; and such that the tab is retained between the metal mounting plate and the metal plate structure with play relative to the metal mounting plate and relative to the metal plate structure. In a burner, the metal plate structure may be, for example, welded to a metal mounting plate at its contact points. In the exemplary burner, the play, which is the difference between the metal mounting plate and the metal plate structure and then the thickness of the woven wire mesh is subtracted, is 0.6 mm.

The metal plate structure 104 includes a plurality of perforations 116 configured to flow the premix gas through the perforations 116 before the premix gas flows through the woven wire mesh.

The periphery of the burner deck has a rectangular shape, the two short sides of which are continuously rounded. The tabs are only provided along the two long sides of the rectangular shape of the perimeter of the burner deck. No tabs are provided along the continuously rounded short sides.

As an alternative to providing a ridge (and a notch in the ridge) in the metal mounting plate, a ridge (and a notch in the ridge) may be provided in the metal plate structure. The remainder of the combustor may be the same as in the example of fig. 1.
