Technical Field

The present invention relates to a vehicle headrest, and more particularly, to a vehicle headrest having a bluetooth speaker incorporated therein.

Background

This section provides background information related to the present disclosure that is not necessarily prior art.

Technological improvements in vehicles have generally focused on enhancements to features including efficiency, safety, and comfort. In improving these features, the problem of technical convenience is often neglected. Not only do these technical conveniences make the passenger's travel experience more enjoyable, but they also provide substantial improvements in efficiency, safety, and comfort. More specifically, a more enjoyable travel experience results in a longer driving period between stops, and may also encourage less movement of the passenger during travel, particularly by children.

One example feature of vehicles that has historically been employed only for safety and comfort is a headrest. Most vehicles include a headrest that is positioned atop the passenger's seat and positioned adjacent the head of the passenger. The headrest is typically cushioned for comfort and is most often made of the same material as the rest of the seat. To a large extent, the headrest is not shared by the passengers, and is adjustable in one or more positions for specific body sizes and comfort preferences. Because user preferences have historically been limited to adjusting the position of the headrest, it has been desirable to provide additional functionality to the headrest and provide passengers with more options to improve and personalize their travel experience.

Detailed Description

Example embodiments will now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings. In general, the present embodiments relate to a headrest assembly in which a bluetooth speaker is provided. However, the example embodiments are provided only so that this disclosure will be thorough and will fully convey the scope to those skilled in the art. Numerous specific details are set forth such as examples of specific components, devices, and methods to provide a thorough understanding of embodiments of the present disclosure. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that specific details need not be employed, that example embodiments may be embodied in many different forms and that should not be construed as limiting the scope of the disclosure. In some example implementations, well-known processes, well-known device structures, and well-known technologies are not described in detail.

Referring to the drawings, wherein like numerals indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, a headrest assembly is intended to provide an enhanced travel experience for a vehicle occupant by adapting to the occupant-specific audio preferences without interfering with the preferences of other occupants of nearby seats.

Referring initially to fig. 1, a headrest assembly is depicted. A head restraint assembly is generally indicated by the numeral 10. The headrest assembly 10 includes a housing 11 (fig. 3) that at least partially encloses several components associated with the stabilization and/or adjustment of the headrest assembly. The shell 11 may include a cushion, support fabric, an outer shell, and other components. A cover 12 is provided on the housing 11 for aesthetic purposes and additional passenger comfort. The housing 11 is operatively coupled to the vehicle seat back such that it may be one integral piece or adjustable. For example, the headrest assembly may include a base portion 14 (which may also be referred to as a "bracket") that is mountable to a vehicle seat, and more specifically, to an upper portion of a seat back of the vehicle seat. The bracket 14 may allow the housing to move vertically, horizontally, or obliquely relative to the vehicle seat back.

The embodiments of the headrest assembly 10 disclosed herein include at least one bluetooth speaker 16. Although a single bluetooth speaker is contemplated, multiple bluetooth speakers may be used. Thus, while two bluetooth speakers are shown, it is understood that more or fewer bluetooth speakers may be included in various embodiments. When two or more bluetooth speakers 16 are used, they are positioned in a symmetrical pattern to output audio equally to each ear in some embodiments. For example, fig. 1 shows two bluetooth speakers 16 positioned symmetrically with respect to a vertical centerline "a" of the headrest assembly 10. In some embodiments, the bluetooth speaker 16 is visible from the outside of the cover 12, as is the case with fig. 1. In such an embodiment, a portion of each bluetooth speaker 16 may be disposed within a respective cover aperture 18. The forward-most point or surface 20 of the bluetooth speaker 16 may protrude from the cover aperture 18 to protrude from the front surface 22 of the cover 12. Alternatively, the frontmost surface 20 of the bluetooth speaker 16 may be flush with the front surface 22 of the cover 12, or recessed within the cover aperture 18 to be recessed from the front surface 22 of the cover 12.

An alternative arrangement is shown in figure 2 in which the bluetooth speaker 16 is recessed into the back pad and covered so that it cannot be seen. The bluetooth speaker 16 may be enclosed within the cover 12 or may be covered with a speaker sheath 24, the speaker sheath 24 having a material known to allow sound to be transmitted without interference, such as a stretchable nylon material. As such, the speaker enclosure 24 may be a different material than the cover 12, for example, the cover 12 may be leather and the speaker enclosure 24 may be stretchable nylon. The speaker enclosure 24 may also include a waterproof material, such as a laminated fabric or a fabric coated with rubber, polyurethane, silicone elastomer, or the like. The speaker enclosure 24 may be integral with or separate from the cover 12. Fig. 2 illustrates one example application of the present headrest assembly 10 in a mass transit vehicle. The turning on, pairing and other additional controls of the bluetooth speaker 16 may be controlled via a user interface 15 comprising a plurality of buttons 17. For example, the buttons 17 may include an on/off button, a pairing button, and a volume button. The user interface 15 may also include an LED to indicate the status of the bluetooth speaker 16, e.g., whether it has been successfully paired.

Figure 3 shows a bluetooth speaker 16 and associated enclosure 13 embedded within the headrest. The envelope 13 surrounds and protects various components associated with the bluetooth speaker 16 (fig. 4). The envelope 13 may be constructed of a hard plastic, a semi-flexible material that allows some deformation, or a flexible material such as rubber. The envelope 13 may be directly connected to the bracket 14 and may also be waterproof. A power cable 26 may extend from the enclosure 13, through the bracket 14, to a power source 28. However, it should be understood that the power source 28 may alternatively be located within the cover 12 and/or the housing 11. In some arrangements, the power source 28 is a battery, and more specifically, a rechargeable battery that is connected to and charged by the vehicle electrical system 30. The vehicle electrical system 30 may include one or more of a vehicle alternator 32 or a power generation system 34, such as regenerative braking. To assist in the maintenance of the bluetooth speaker 16 and associated components, an inspection port 36 may be provided in the cover 12 to provide access.

Fig. 4 is a schematic diagram of the bluetooth speaker 16 and associated bluetooth component circuitry 38 contained within the enclosure 13, with various elements provided to allow for a particular implementation. Accordingly, one of ordinary skill in the electronic and circuit arts may substitute various components to achieve similar functions. The bluetooth component circuitry 38 may include a primary Printed Circuit Board (PCB) 40. The primary PCB 40 controls certain features of the bluetooth speaker 16, such as regulating voltage from the power supply 28, amplifying audio, and bluetooth communications. The PCB 40 includes a voltage regulator circuit 42 that monitors the amount of power supplied to other components. The PCB 40 also includes audio circuitry 44, including an audio amplifier 46 and an operational amplifier 48. The PCB 40 also includes bluetooth circuitry 50, which may include one or more integrated circuits, modules, and antennas for connecting, transmitting, and processing data from passengers. For example, the bluetooth circuitry 50 may be connected to a passenger's wireless mobile device 52, such as a mobile phone. A secondary circuit 54 may be located in each respective bluetooth speaker 16 for connecting the audio line input to the PCB 40. As shown, the user interface 15 may be connected directly to the bluetooth module circuitry 38 and use the same power supply 28.

Fig. 5-7 illustrate an alternative embodiment in which the wrapper 13 and/or associated bluetooth module circuitry 38 are at least partially located in a housing 56 that is separable from the housing 11. Referring first to fig. 5, the headrest assembly 10 is shown with the housing 56 in an attached position on the housing 11. Although not limited thereto, the enclosure 56 is shown with a pair of speakers 16 symmetrically connected by a narrow central portion 60 defining a recess 62, the recess 62 being sized to fit over the rear of the housing 11. Fig. 6 shows the housing 56 in a disengaged position. As shown, the central portion 60 includes a connector 64 for connecting to the rear of the housing 11. The connectors may be clips as shown, or any other suitable structural feature that couples the housing 56 to the headrest. The central portion 60 also includes a first electrical contact 66, the first electrical contact 66 drawing power from a second electrical contact 68 (fig. 7) when the housing 56 is in the attached position. The second electrical contact 68 is connected to the power source 28, as has been described above.

With continued reference to fig. 6, an important aspect of this embodiment is that the bluetooth module circuitry 38 may be configured to play audio even when the housing 56 is detached from the case 11. Thus, in addition to the power source 28, an additional battery (not shown) is also located within the housing 56. The additional battery is rechargeable and draws current from the power source 28 during connection of the electrical contacts 66, 68. Additionally, it should also be understood that the additional battery may be disposable and accessible within the housing 56. The housing 56 may also include a charging port 70 so that the bluetooth module circuitry 38 may be plugged into a wall outlet and play audio without relying on the additional battery or power supply 28. The charging port 70 may also be used to charge the additional battery. Thus, when the housing 56 is detached from the case 11, it operates as a fully functional bluetooth speaker that can be paired with other electronics such as the aforementioned mobile device 52. Clips 64 and/or other attachment mechanisms may be arranged and/or included to physically attach the mobile device 52 to the housing 56. The central portion 60 also includes a secondary user interface 72 having a plurality of buttons 74, which plurality of buttons 74 may include an on/off button, a pairing button, and a volume button. In some embodiments, the secondary user interface 72 may be accessible only when the housing 56 is detached from the housing 11. Additionally, the central portion 60 may also include a direct connection port, such as a speaker jack 76 for direct connection to the mobile device 52.

In addition to transmitting power, the electrical contacts 66, 68 may also be configured to transmit audio information from the vehicle audio system such that audio selections from the vehicle audio system are relayed by the speaker 16. For example, the electrical contacts 66, 68 may form a spring-type connection. Selection between audio inputs may be selected via various user interfaces and/or pairing devices. In this way, all or selected headrest assemblies 10 in the vehicle may play audio originating from the vehicle audio system simultaneously.

Fig. 7 shows a housing 11 having a multi-piece construction according to the embodiment shown in fig. 5 and 6. More specifically, the housing 11 includes a front portion 78 and a rear portion 80. The rear portion 80 is at least partially inserted into the front portion 78. The housing 11 also includes a bracket 82 that wraps around the rear portion 80 and attaches to a notch 84 in the front portion 78. The bracket 82 includes a receiver 86 (recess) for mating with the clip 64 of the housing 56. The bracket 82 also includes a second electrical contact 68 on an upwardly facing surface 88 of the bracket 82 and is positioned to contact the first electrical contact 66 when the housing 56 is attached. The upwardly facing surface 88 includes a retaining groove 90 for supporting a correspondingly shaped member 94 (fig. 6) of the housing 56. In this way, the upwardly facing surface 88 retains a majority of the weight of the housing 56 during attachment.

The wireless ability of bluetooth technology to exchange data to and from the mobile devices 42 over short distances facilitates convenient use by passengers when seated in seats having the headrest assembly 10 disclosed herein. As individuals become increasingly dependent on mobile devices 52, such as wearable technology, to obtain audio content (e.g., music, podcasts, audio books, etc.), connections to the headrest assembly 10 from being dependent on the mobile device or wearable technology will increase the enjoyment and personalization of the passenger experience. Although not limited thereto, the invention is particularly useful in co-riding vehicles, transportation network company vehicles, public transportation, convertible vehicles traveling with children and having difficulty listening to music during high winds.

In particular, ride sharing is an increasingly popular ride share option that involves one or more individuals sharing a vehicle to be transported. The headrest assembly 10 disclosed herein alleviates the need for ride-sharing passengers to attempt to find a suitable audio option to play on the vehicle's main audio system, as each passenger with mobile devices or wearable technology (or other electronic devices such as tablets, laptops, etc.) has the ability to quickly and easily connect to the bluetooth speaker 16 to individually select audio content. Advantageously, the headrest assembly 10 equipped with the Bluetooth speaker 16 provides personalized and individual audio control.

While the invention has been described in detail in connection with only a limited number of embodiments, it should be readily understood that the invention is not limited to such disclosed embodiments. Rather, the invention can be modified to incorporate any number of variations, alterations, substitutions or equivalent arrangements not heretofore described, but which are commensurate with the spirit and scope of the invention. Additionally, while various embodiments of the invention have been described, it is to be understood that aspects of the invention may include only some of the described embodiments. Accordingly, the invention is not to be seen as limited by the foregoing description, but is only limited by the scope of the appended claims.
