The working principle of gear hobbing is that the cutter for cutting the gear blank is a hob, the outer appearance of the hob is like a worm because the helix angle of the hob is larger, the hob is grooved in the direction vertical to the helical groove to form a plurality of cutting edges, and the normal section of the hob has a rack shape. Therefore, when the hob rotates continuously, the hob teeth can be regarded as the movement of an infinite rack, meanwhile, the hob teeth cut from top to bottom, the meshing relationship between the rack (hob) and the gear blank is maintained, and the hob can machine an involute tooth profile on the gear blank.

When a traditional gear hobbing machine is used for cutting, due to the requirement of gear machining, the height of the hobbing cutter mechanism needs to be adjusted in the working process, and the hobbing cutter mechanism is easy to shake, so that the machining precision is reduced.
