1. A fuel extraction device suitable for mounting to a fuel tank, the device having a head for fitting to a wall of a tank, an elongate body extending from the head into the tank in use, and a separator disposed in the elongate body, the separator comprising means for generating a helical flow of fuel through the device between an inlet and an outlet, wherein any denser contaminants in the fuel entering a separation chamber through the inlet move radially outwardly in the helical flow away from the outlet, the outlet being arranged such that fuel drawn from the chamber is substantially free of any denser contaminants, means being provided in the body for collecting any denser contaminants separated from the fuel.

2. The fuel extraction apparatus of claim 1, wherein the means for generating a spiral fuel flow is arranged to generate a spiral fuel flow in an axially extending separation chamber of the separator.

3. The fuel extraction device of claim 2, wherein the inlet is disposed at a distal end of the chamber.

4. The fuel extraction device of claim 2 or 3, wherein the outlet is disposed at a proximal end of the chamber.

5. The fuel extraction apparatus of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the outlet is positioned in the centre of the chamber about the axis of rotation of the spiral flow.

6. The fuel extraction apparatus of claim 5, wherein the width of the outlet is substantially less than the width of the chamber.

7. The fuel extraction apparatus of any preceding claim, wherein the means for generating a helical fuel flow in the chamber comprises at least one guide vane disposed in the chamber.

8. The fuel extraction apparatus of any preceding claim, wherein the means for generating a helical fuel flow in the chamber comprises at least one guide vane disposed in the inlet.

9. The fuel extraction apparatus of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the means for generating a spiral fuel flow in the chamber comprises an inlet oriented to direct fuel tangential to the axis of rotation of the spiral flow.

10. The fuel extraction apparatus of claim 7, wherein the vanes comprise helical guide vanes extending longitudinally along the chamber.

11. The fuel extraction apparatus of claim 10, wherein an axial distance between adjacent turns of the helical guide vanes decreases between the inlet and the outlet.

12. The fuel extraction apparatus of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the chamber comprises a tubular side wall bounding the spiral fuel flow, the side wall having apertures through which separated water can pass into a collection chamber.

13. The fuel extraction apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 11, wherein the chamber comprises an inner tubular sidewall and an outer sidewall bounding the spiral fuel flow, the outlet extending axially within the inner tubular sidewall from a proximal end thereof, the proximal end of the sidewall being open to allow the separated water to flow into a collection chamber disposed between the inner sidewall and the outer sidewall.

14. The fuel extraction apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 11, wherein the chamber comprises a tubular side wall with an abrupt increase in diameter such that any water in the spiral flow is released into a wider portion of the chamber where collection can occur.

15. A fuel extraction apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the water collection member is arranged to store water for removal from the apparatus.

16. A fuel extraction apparatus as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein a conduit extends from the head into the water collection member so that the water can be removed.

17. A fuel extraction apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the outlet opens into an outlet chamber having a larger cross-sectional area than the outlet.

18. The fuel extraction apparatus of claim 17, wherein the plurality of outlet chambers are connected in series.

19. An assembly comprising a fuel tank and a fuel extraction device fitted to the tank, the fuel extraction device being a device according to any preceding claim.

20. A method of fitting a fuel extraction device to a fuel tank, the fuel extraction device being as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 18, the method comprising inserting the elongate body of the device through an aperture in the tank such that the elongate body extends towards the bottom of the tank.

21. The method of claim 20, comprising securing the head of the device to a wall of the tank.
