1. A vehicle (100) comprising:

a fuel tank (130) comprising:

a fuel filler pipe (133);

a fuel cap (134) removably coupled to the fuel filler tube (133), wherein the fuel cap (134) includes a gripping portion (140);

a cover (131) comprising a fuel tank access cover (152), wherein the fuel tank access cover (152) comprises a protrusion (166);

wherein when the fuel tank cap (134) is improperly positioned, the protrusion (166) is configured to interfere with the grip portion (140) and prevent the fuel tank from entering the cap portion (152) for closing.

The vehicle (100) of claim 1, characterized in that the vehicle (100) comprises a side cover assembly (132), the side cover assembly (132) having a front side cover (126), a left side cover (124), a right side cover (129), and a rear side cover (128), wherein the cover (131) represents at least one of the front side cover (126), the left side cover (124), the right side cover (129), and the rear side cover (128) of the side cover assembly (132).

The vehicle (100) of claim 2, characterized in that the cover (131) represents the rear side cover (128) disposed below a seat (108) and above a tail light (109), wherein the fuel tank (130) is disposed below the seat (108) such that the cover (131) covers the fuel filler pipe (133) of the fuel tank (130).

4. The vehicle (100) of claim 1, characterized in that the vehicle (100) comprises a leg shield (120) having an inner leg shield (122) and an outer leg shield (121), wherein the cover (131) represents the inner leg shield (122).

5. The vehicle (100) of claim 1, characterized in that the fuel tank access cover (152) is disposed directly above the fuel filler pipe (133) of the fuel tank (130).

6. The vehicle (100) of claim 1, characterized in that the fuel tank cap (134) is considered properly positioned when the grip portion (140) is aligned with a fore-aft direction of the vehicle (100).

7. The vehicle (100) of claim 1, characterized in that the fuel tank cap (134) is considered properly positioned when the grip portion (140) is aligned with a left-right direction of the vehicle (100).

8. The vehicle (100) of claims 5 and 6, characterized in that any positioning of the fuel cap (134) other than the correct positioning is considered an incorrect positioning and interferes with the protrusion (166).

9. The vehicle (100) of claim 7, characterized in that the shape of the protrusion (166) is selected to interfere with incorrect positioning of the fuel cap (134).

10. The vehicle (100) of claim 1, characterized in that the fuel tank access cover (152) is hingedly coupled to the cover (131), wherein the fuel tank access cover (152) covers the fuel tank cap (134) when in a closed position of the fuel tank access cover (152).

Technical Field

The present invention relates to a vehicle, and more particularly to a rear end structure of a vehicle.

Background

Vehicles, particularly vehicles configured for riding, such as scooters, motorcycles, tricycles, and four-wheel vehicles such as all terrain vehicles, include a fuel tank system, which typically includes a fuel tank and a fuel filler pipe through which fuel is dispensed into the fuel tank. A removable fuel cap is threadably secured to one end of the fuel filler tube to close the fuel filler tube. For example, the fuel tank system may be disposed in the rear of the vehicle. Further, the vehicle may also include a remotely operated actuator that releases a cover that allows access to a refueling compartment that encloses the fuel tank system.

When the vehicle is to be refueled, the vehicle operator actuates the remotely operated actuator to release the cover to the fueling compartment, and typically twists or rotates the removable fuel tank cover until it is removed from the fuel filler tube. Once refueling is complete, the vehicle operator manually secures the fuel tank cap to the fuel filler tube. However, in many instances, it has been observed that if the vehicle operator is distracted during a refueling operation, the vehicle operator may forget to reconnect the fuel tank lid and/or close the fuel filler hatch and open the fuel filler pipe, or the fuel filler compartment allows toxic and flammable fuel vapors to be released into the environment and also causes fuel spillage issues, which is undesirable. Further, even if the fuel cap is repositioned on the fuel filler tube, the fuel cap may not be properly threaded onto the fuel filler tube, thereby providing an inadequate seal.

SUMMARY

In one aspect of the present invention, a vehicle is provided. The vehicle includes a fuel tank including a fuel filler pipe and a fuel tank cap removably coupled to the fuel filler pipe. The fuel tank cap includes a grip portion. The vehicle also includes a cover that includes a fuel tank access cover. The fuel tank access cover portion includes a protrusion. When the fuel cap is improperly positioned, the protrusion is configured to interfere with the grip portion and prevent the fuel tank from entering the cap portion and closing.

In one embodiment, a vehicle includes a side cover assembly having a front side cover, a left side cover, a right side cover, and a rear side cover. The cover is represented by at least one of a front cover, a left cover, a right cover, and a back cover of the side cover assembly.

In one embodiment, the cover is embodied as a rear side cover disposed under the seat and above the tail light. The fuel tank is disposed below the seat such that the cover covers the fuel filler pipe of the fuel tank.

In an embodiment, a vehicle includes a leg shield having an inner leg shield and an outer leg shield. The cover represents the inner leg shield of the leg shield.

In one embodiment, the fuel tank access cover is disposed directly over the fuel filler tube of the fuel tank.

In one embodiment, the fuel lid is considered to be properly positioned when the grip portion is aligned with the fore-aft direction of the vehicle. In one embodiment, the fuel lid is considered to be properly positioned when the grip portion is aligned with the left-right direction of the vehicle.

In one embodiment, any positioning of the fuel cap other than the correct positioning is considered to be an incorrect positioning and interference protrusion.

In one embodiment, the shape of the protrusion is selected to interfere with incorrect positioning of the fuel cap.

In one embodiment, the fuel tank access cover is hingedly coupled to the cover. The fuel tank access cover portion covers the fuel tank lid when the fuel tank access cover portion is in the closed position.

The disclosed vehicle includes a fuel tank access cover having a protrusion. In the event that the fuel cap is improperly positioned, the projection does not allow the fuel tank access lid portion to close, thereby ensuring that the vehicle operator properly closes the fuel cap after each refueling operation. In the case where the fuel cap is improperly positioned, the projection abuts against the grip portion of the fuel cap, thereby preventing the fuel tank from entering the cap portion and being closed. Further, since the protrusion ensures proper closure of the fuel tank cap and fuel tank access cover, the release of toxic and flammable fuel vapors into the environment may be eliminated and/or reduced.
