The salt product resulting from the process exhibits reduced corrosion of steel in contact with the salt relative to a salt composition not so treated. This makes such treated salts more effective coolant salts as they will require less equipment replacement over time. The process uses magnesium metal to reduce unwanted impurities in the salt and then removes the reduced impurities as a gas or precipitate from the now purified salt. Without being bound by a particular theory, it is believed that the reduction in the level of impurities in the salt results in a salt having significantly reduced corrosivity to the steel.)
