1. an adjustable trial femoral head for assessing anteversion of an acetabular cup relative to a pelvis of a patient, the adjustable trial femoral head comprising:

an at least partially spherical body having a bore configured to receive a free end of a femoral neck; and

a visual alignment guide mounted on the at least partially spherical body, and wherein an orientation of the visual alignment guide relative to the spherical body is adjustable.

2. The adjustable trial femoral head according to claim 1, and further comprising a lock, wherein the lock is operable to fix the orientation of the visual alignment guide relative to the at least partially spherical body.

3. The adjustable trial femoral head of claim 2, wherein the lock comprises a grub screw operable to engage a portion of the at least partially spherical body to fix the orientation of the visual alignment guide.

4. The adjustable trial femoral head according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the at least partially spherical body comprises at least a marking, the at least a marking being arranged to indicate a preselected anteversion angle of the acetabular cup relative to the pelvis.

5. The adjustable trial femoral head according to claim 4, wherein the at least partially spherical body comprises a plurality of indicia, each indicia arranged to indicate a different respective preselected anteversion angle of the acetabular cup relative to the pelvis.

6. The adjustable trial femoral head according to claim 4 or 5, wherein the or each indicium is in the form of a line and the line extends at least partially in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the bore.

7. The adjustable trial femoral head according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the visual alignment guide comprises a component made of an x-ray opaque material.

8. The adjustable trial femoral head according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the component is in the form of a ring or part of a ring.

9. The adjustable trial femoral head according to claim 7 or 8, wherein the component is made of metal.

10. The adjustable trial femoral head according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the visual alignment guide comprises a projection that projects out of an adjacent surface of the visual alignment guide and is arranged to engage with a rim of an acetabular cup or acetabular cup liner in use.

11. The adjustable trial femoral head according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the visual alignment guide is part of a cap pivotally mounted on the at least partially spherical body.

12. The adjustable trial femoral head of claim 11, wherein the visual alignment guide is an edge of the cap or an portion of an edge.

13. The adjustable trial femoral head according to any of the preceding claims, wherein when the trial femoral head is mounted on a femoral neck attached to the patient's femur, the adjustable trial femoral head is received in the acetabular cup to form a trial hip joint, and wherein the orientation of the visual alignment guide relative to the spherical body is indicative of the anteversion of the acetabular cup relative to the patient's pelvis when the patient's leg and the patient's pelvis are arranged in a preselected position.

14. The adjustable trial femoral head according to claim 13, wherein the preselected position is a Ranawat symbol position.

15. The adjustable trial femoral head according to claim 13, wherein the preselected location is an anatomical location.

16. The adjustable trial femoral head of claim 15, wherein the at least partially spherical body comprises at least a th mark, the at least a th mark arranged to indicate a 20 ° anteversion angle of the acetabular cup relative to the pelvis.

17. The adjustable trial femoral head according to claim 15 or 16, wherein the anatomical position substantially corresponds to 0 ° extension/flexion of the leg, 0 ° abduction/adduction of the femur and 0 ° rotation of the femur.

18, a kit of parts, the kit of parts comprising:

an adjustable trial femoral head according to any one of claims 1 to 17 at ;

a trial neck to which the adjustable trial femoral head is attachable;

an acetabular cup defining a cup cavity adapted to receive the adjustable trial femoral head; and

a femoral component to which the trial neck is attachable.

19. The kit of parts of claim 18, and further comprising a liner, and wherein the liner defines a liner cavity adapted to receive the adjustable trial femoral head, and an acetabular cup cavity is adapted to receive the liner.

20, a trial hip assembly of the kit of parts of claim 18 or 19.

21. A method of assessing anteversion of an acetabular cup within an acetabulum of a pelvis of a patient, comprising:

repositioning a trial hip joint including an acetabular cup within an acetabulum of a pelvis of a patient and an adjustable trial femoral head attached to a neck of a femoral component located within a femur of a leg of the patient, wherein the adjustable trial femoral head includes a visual alignment guide having an orientation that is adjustable relative to the adjustable trial femoral head; and

assessing the anteversion of the acetabular cup based on the orientation of the visual alignment guide relative to the adjustable trial femoral head.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

moving the leg of the patient to an anatomical position prior to evaluating the anteversion of the acetabular cup.

23. A method according to claim 22, wherein the anatomical locations substantially correspond to 0 ° extension/flexion of the leg, 0 ° abduction/adduction of the femur, and 0 ° rotation of the femur.

24. The method of any of claims 21-23, wherein the visual alignment guide includes an X-ray opaque component, and further comprising;

capturing an X-ray image of the trial hip joint; and

the anteversion of the cup is evaluated in a step from the X-ray image.

25. The method of any of claims 21-24, wherein the visual alignment guide is free to change its orientation relative to the adjustable trial femoral head.

26. The method of any of claims 21-24, further comprising:

adjusting the orientation of the visual alignment guide relative to the adjustable trial femoral head; and

locking the orientation of the visual alignment guide relative to the adjustable trial femoral head.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the adjustable trial femoral head includes at least markings corresponding to a preselected anteversion of the acetabular cup, and wherein the orientation of the visual alignment guide is adjusted to align the visual alignment guide with the markings.

28. The method of claim 27, wherein the adjustable trial femoral head comprises a plurality of indicia that each correspond to a respective preselected anteversion of the acetabular cup, and wherein the orientation of the visual alignment guide is adjusted to align the visual alignment guide with indicia of the plurality of indicia.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the of the plurality of markers correspond to preselected locations of the trial hip joint, and further comprising placing the trial hip joint at the preselected locations prior to assessing the anteversion of the acetabular cup.
