1. A sealed linear encoder apparatus for providing a measurement of the relative displacement of two relatively moveable members, the sealed linear encoder apparatus comprising at least one elongate sealing lip, wherein at least a sealing portion of the elongate sealing lip is held under tension along its length.

2. The sealed linear encoder device of claim 1, wherein the elongated sealing lip has a natural curvature and the elongated sealing lip deforms away from its natural curvature to maintain at least the sealing portion under tension.

3. The sealed linear encoder device of claim 1 or claim 2, comprising a protective housing, wherein the seal root retainer portion of the protective housing retains and deforms the seal root portion of the elongate sealing lip.

4. The sealed linear encoder device of claim 3, wherein the elongated sealing lip includes a longitudinal element configured to introduce the natural curvature therein.

5. The sealed linear encoder device of claim 3 or claim 4, wherein at least one seal root portion of the elongate seal lip has a natural curvature that is greater than a curvature of the at least one seal root retainer.

6. The sealed linear encoder device of any one of claims 2 to 5, wherein the natural curvature is about an imaginary axis perpendicular to the length and width of the sealing lip.

7. The sealed linear encoder device according to any one of claims 2 to 6, wherein the elongate sealing lip is deformed into a linear configuration so as to place the at least one sealing portion under tension.

8. The sealed linear encoder device according to any one of claims 2 to 7, wherein at least a length of the sealing portion of the elongate sealing lip is longer in a deformed state than a length of the sealing portion when it assumes its natural curvature.

9. The sealed linear encoder device according to any preceding claim, comprising a pair of elongate sealing lips, and wherein the elongate sealing lips are retained for forming a seal between sealing portions of the elongate sealing lips.

10. The sealed linear encoder device of any preceding claim, wherein at least a sealing portion of the elongate sealing lip comprises an elastomer.

11. A sealed linear encoder apparatus according to any preceding claim, in which the scale signal receiver of the scale and readhead assembly is located on a first side of the at least one elongate sealing lip, and the scale signal receiver is connectable to a component on a second side of the elongate sealing lip.

12. A sealed linear encoder apparatus according to any preceding claim, wherein at least the sealing portion of the elongate sealing lip is held in an elastically stretched configuration so as to place at least the sealing portion under tension.

13. A sealed linear encoder apparatus according to any preceding claim, in which the increase in length of at least the sealing portion due to the tension is at least 0.5%.

14. A sealing lip for a sealed linear encoder device, the elongate sealing lip having a natural curvature such that at least a sealing portion of the elongate sealing lip is held under tension along its length when it is pulled into a straight configuration.

15. The sealing lip for a sealed linear encoder device according to claim 14, wherein at least the length of the sealing portion increases when pulled into a straight configuration, the increase in length due to the tension being at least 0.5%.
